Downloading and importing Mixamo mocap files

Mixamo is a large online library full of free mocap files that can be previewed in a web browser. In addition to housing this extensive library of mocap files, Mixamo also has many pre-made 3D characters.

Before we go any further, though, I need you to have a big picture of what we are trying to achieve in this chapter. Things can get a bit confusing, especially if you are doing it for the first time, so let’s break it down into simple steps:

  1. Download a character and a mocap file from Adobe Mixamo.
  2. Import the character and the mocap file into UE.
  3. Retarget the Mixamo character to the UE5 Mannequin character.
  4. Retarget the UE5 Mannequin character to our MetaHumans.
  5. Test the animation in Sequencer.

At the time of writing this book, the process of retargeting mocap files from Mixamo to MetaHumans involves setting up an IK Rig for the downloaded Mixamo character to match the bones of the standard UE5 Mannequin...
