Building the model
In this section, we will look at building the semantic model that we’ve designed and prepared data for in the previous sections. Building a semantic model involves using the queries that were prepared using Power Query, loading them into Power BI Desktop, and then performing the following tasks:
- Reviewing and enabling relationships among the tables.
- Ensuring the correct data types of the columns.
- Structuring the tables according to the requirements and standards.
- Creating and organizing measures.
- Creating and organizing hierarchies.
When you load the data that you prepared for the model by clicking on the Close & Apply option in the Power Query window, the queries will connect to the source and start applying the set of steps defined on each query, thereby extracting, transforming, and loading the data into Power BI Desktop.
