Summary

In this chapter, we learned that Displacement maps are special texture maps used to create bumpy surfaces in a 3D space. We studied how they work to produce a result and how we can generate custom Displacement maps in GIMP and Blender.

We now have two methods to generate displacement, both externally and internally in Blender. This gives us the possibility to create various types of surfaces, which can contribute significantly to the level of realism of an object or scene.

In the next chapter, we will learn how to unwrap 3D models and gain more control and freedom in the texturing process. This will give us many new possibilities to create custom textures by texture painting.
