Mitch Williams has been involved with 3D graphics programming and Web3D development since its creation in the mid 1990s. He began his career writing software for digital imaging products before moving on as Manager of Software for Vivendi Universal Games. In the late 1990s, he started 3D-Online, his own company, where he created "Dynamic-3D", a Web3D graphics engine. He has worked on various projects ranging from interactive 3D medical procedures, online 3D training for the Department of Defense, creating one of the first 3D mobile games prior to the launch of the iPhone, and graphics card shader language programming. He has been teaching Interactive 3D Media at various universities including UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UCLA Extension.

Mission briefing


Since we are talking about 3D and the Web, why not talk about Web3D sites? We will look at some original Web3D designs, the lessons learned, and the challenges ahead, such as navigating and prompting users to engage in an interactive 3D environment.

Traditional 2D web coalesced around standard designs, which were often three columns of text with interspersed images and perhaps advertisements overlaid on top. It took a quarter century from the beginning of the Internet in the 1960s to the first commercial applications using web browsers in the early 1990s. Therefore, perhaps the 3D web is just a matter of time. We will look again at X3D as we did in Project 1, Building Great Web3D, and some techniques only available in 3D to create engaging websites, and maybe, make interactive 3D the media standard of this century.

The Web has been a catalyst for a lot of great creative content and has connected society through channels such as Facebook and distribution sites...
