Mitch Williams has been involved with 3D graphics programming and Web3D development since its creation in the mid 1990s. He began his career writing software for digital imaging products before moving on as Manager of Software for Vivendi Universal Games. In the late 1990s, he started 3D-Online, his own company, where he created "Dynamic-3D", a Web3D graphics engine. He has worked on various projects ranging from interactive 3D medical procedures, online 3D training for the Department of Defense, creating one of the first 3D mobile games prior to the launch of the iPhone, and graphics card shader language programming. He has been teaching Interactive 3D Media at various universities including UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UCLA Extension.

Building a 3D website


When I began 3D-Online, or more specifically, www.3d-online.com, I was determined to have interactive Web3D on the home page, as shown in the following screenshot. After all, if Web3D was going to prove itself, then interactive 3D graphics had to be in front of people right on the home page. Web3D companies at that time, such as PULSE 3D, attracted a lot of attention at SIGGRAPH 2000 in New Orleans with their Web3D examples on distant pages of their website. You had to go through a few links from the home page just to see interactive Web3D. Of course, you had to download and install their plugin first. While it was a great technology and PULSE 3D's efforts were noble, this seemed a timid presentation of one's own product and industry.

To create awareness for Web3D, it had to be on the home page. This meant that plugins such as PULSE 3D could not be used. No one is going to download a plugin just to see your home page. The only reliable solution...
