What are projects?

The meaning of the word project in the context of Final Cut Pro (X) compared to the legacy Final Cut Pro 7 can be confusing, as the legacy meaning of the word is different from the Final Cut Pro (X) interpretation. There is a similar difference in the definition of the word project between other NLEs and Final Cut Pro, too. In Final Cut Pro, a project is contained within an event, which is contained within the library. The other NLEs have bins and sequences. Think of bins as events and sequences as projects in Final Cut Pro. The word bin is a carryover from the days of film, before digital, where the reels of film were stored in a bin.

The structure of the legacy version of Final Cut Pro also had project, rather than library, at the top of the hierarchy, with a sequence being more of a project in the current version of Final Cut Pro.
