Fabio Staiano is an experienced interface designer and Figma Community Advocate from Italy. After having been part of the creative agency Geko for several years, he later became a partner, creating digital products for well-known brands and running local events for the creative community. He then began his career in education in 2016, at The Guru Lab, teaching students about user interface and web design. In 2019, he decided to face new challenges by deepening his development skills at the Apple Developer Academy, where he specializes in frontend development and publishes various apps and boilerplate. Currently, he works as a consultant for IT projects and teaches at private design schools.

Starting a new design project

In this chapter, you will temporarily step away from analysis and research work in FigJam files and instead discover Figma's essential tools and functions. You will find a lot of material to learn, and it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed by all this new information. But the good thing about this chapter is that you can refer to it from time to time when you're unsure of any of the basics of Figma. So don't worry about memorizing all the concepts of each function; you will see how everything works later on in the book, and each tool and feature will be explained in a more practical way.

Design files

You already know that Figma has two types of files – FigJam and design. You've learned about FigJam files in detail in the previous chapter. This time you will go back to the file selection and make another choice, namely to create a new design file.
