Tableau Server is where you can create, store, and share data sources, views, dashboards, and metrics for your company. You will begin by learning how to access this content by connecting to your Tableau Server environment in a web browser. Then, you will learn how to sign in to the server from Tableau Desktop and publish content directly to the server to be shared with others.

Learning these skills will establish the foundation for many concepts learned throughout the remainder of this book. This chapter will also quickly get you started with the basic knowledge of how to get your newly created content out there for end users to see and interact with.

How to connect and publish to Tableau Public?

To begin, what is Tableau Public? Tableau Public is a free online version of Tableau's visualization software. It's a cloud service that allows users to publicly share and explore data visualizations. Tableau Public provides you with many of the same functionalities of Tableau Desktop without the cost. If you or your organization are new to Tableau or considering implementing the software, the Tableau Public platform is a great place to start. The Tableau Public home page is shown in Figure 2.17:

This free version of Tableau allows you to begin exploring the platform, find inspiration, connect with community members, utilize learning resources, build your own personal portfolio, and so much more.
