Blocking out the head

In this section, you will learn about different starting points for sculpting a head and what their pros and cons are. Then, you will learn how to block out the head from the HeadPlanes_Female_256 model, from ZBrush’s content library.

Important note

Before you start to sculpt the head, make sure you have collected enough pictures and reference material so you do not have to rely on memory and imagination. A great reference software is PureRef. You can find more information about it in Chapter 2.

Starting points for blocking out the head

As so often is the case in ZBrush, there are many ways to start modeling something. When it comes to sculpting a head, there are three common ways – using a sphere, using a base mesh, and using Head planes. Let’s look at each of these options.
