Creating a feature dataset

You now know how to create a new file geodatabase and add feature classes to it. However, as you might imagine, it is possible for a single geodatabase to include the many feature classes required to support the operations of an organization. That might make it hard to locate and manage the feature classes that a single department, group, or individual might need to use. So, it would be helpful if you could group related feature classes together in a geodatabase, similar to how we organize computer files in the folder. You can do that using feature datasets.

Feature datasets allow you to organize related feature classes together, making them easier to locate and manage. You can basically think of them as folders within your geodatabase. All feature classes stored in a feature dataset will have common properties, such as a coordinate system, resolution, and tolerance.
