Creating subtypes
Subtypes provide a way to create categories of data within a single feature class or standalone table. You can then assign different behavior to the data based on its subtype. This can include things such as specific default field values, domains, and topology rules per subtype. This can, in turn, increase the overall accuracy of your data and improve analysis and editing.
Subtypes are based on a field in the table that identifies the specific subtype or category that the features or records in the table belong to. The field must be either a long or short integer data type. Once a subtype has been defined in a feature class, when you add that feature class to a map as a layer, the symbology for that layer will be based on the subtypes.
