Creating a new geodatabase and feature classes

As mentioned, a geodatabase is the primary storage format for the ArcGIS platform, which includes ArcGIS Pro. This format has many advantages over other data formats, such as shapefiles, coverages, or DWG AutoCAD files.

Geodatabases can store a range of data used in a GIS including tabular, raster, and vector data in a single database. This makes it easier to manage and access all your GIS data because it is in one place. Then, they support data validation using topologies, advanced data models, domains, and subtypes. This allows you to find and correct errors in your data. Geodatabases are scalable, so they can grow as your organization does. All of this makes geodatabases extremely powerful and flexible in supporting an organization’s GIS needs.

In this recipe, you will learn the basic skills needed to create a new geodatabase and add new feature classes stored in it.
