Why do we use a green or blue color for chroma keying?

Green and blue are commonly used for chroma keying because they have several characteristics that make them suitable for this purpose:

  • Low likelihood of conflicts: Green and blue are colors that are less likely to be found in skin tones or objects used in video production. This reduces the risk of unintentionally keying out parts of the subject.
  • Contrast with human skin: Green and blue are quite different from the most common human skin tones, which tend to fall within the reddish spectrum. This contrast makes it easier to separate the subject from the background.
  • Luminance values: Green and blue have relatively consistent luminance values, which means they are easy to light evenly. This uniformity in lighting is crucial for achieving a clean key.
