Professor Chris Piorkowski is an award-winning composer, with a Masters in Music Technology from the University of Newcastle in Australia, an MFA majoring in Music Composition for Film, TV and Multimedia from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, a Diploma in Media Composition from Music for The Media in London, and another Diploma in Sound Engineering from the Audio Institute of America in San Francisco. He has also studied Film Scoring and Orchestration at Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as Film Music Orchestration Steven Scott Smalley and Jazz Piano with Walter Norris. In his professional life, he has worked on countless projects at the legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles scoring over 50 projects for TBN, ShowTime, PBS, and Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek).

What skills are required of a film composer?

In a constantly evolving film industry, the expectations and challenges for film composers require certain preparation and skill levels. Here are some:

  • Able to play at least one musical instrument
  • Strong music theory, harmony, and improvization skills
  • Efficiently arrange and orchestrate music
  • Write music quickly for delivery
  • Strong knowledge in using computer technology such as Logic Pro (DAW)
  • Mix your own music
  • Create orchestral mockups
  • Compose a variety of different styles and genres of music
  • Able to score to picture in Logic Pro (DAW)
  • Create music with a limited amount of time and resources
  • Good time management and organization skills
  • Good knowledge of the business of music, including the costs of orchestras, recording sessions, and budgeting

You don’t need to have all of these skills right away as you venture into film music, but you’ll want to keep working on these areas to help you reach your desired potential.
