What are functional requirements?

Functional requirements describe a specific set of capabilities that a system must provide to users to achieve their goals. These are the actions that users would like to perform so that they can achieve the desired business needs or expectations. A functional requirement states how a system must behave to meet users’ needs; it can be capabilities that users perform or capabilities that the system performs without users’ intervention. We need to understand and capture what the system does (function) and how the system does it (behavior) while documenting functional requirements. At this point, we are trying to understand all the functional aspects of the requirements. Let us focus on understanding all functional requirements. At a minimum, we need to be able to understand the business requirements...
