Sumit Sharma has rich experience in Unmanned systems with specialization in Drones architecture development and testing for different applications. He is experienced in Drone Mechanics, Avionics, Design and manufacturing. In his early career, he was involved in the development and testing of the first approved agriculture drone and later getting it approved by the DGCA. Along with this, he has contributed to the development of a Survey drone for Aerial Surveys. He was also involved in the development of high speed and long range surveillance drones for defence tenders. Sumit has been involved in early agriculture spraying pilot projects and was a part of Aerial Spraying on the Locust which hit Rajasthan in 2020.

Introduction to thrust, weight, lift, drag, and cruise

Any system that is planned to be in the air is characterized by the physical forces that act upon it in a 3D space, that is, the X-, Y-, and Z-axes. On Earth, the force that pulls an object down is the force of gravity, which has to be overcome first when seeking flight. The force of gravity acts the same towards all objects on Earth, pulling them at an acceleration of 9.8 m/sec2. When taking this into consideration, all objects have their weight associated with this process, which is acted upon by the force of gravity.

When taking Newton’s third law into account, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The drone experiences a force that is equal and opposite to the force of gravity acting on the body. Let’s see the various terminologies associated with this and how we can cater to it.

Thrust

Thrust is the reaction force produced by the rotation of motors and propellers in the drone. This force acts...
