Summary

This concludes the chapter on data mesh cost management. We broke down the costs into multiple large buckets of direct, shared, service, and people costs. We looked at how these costs are measured and ways of capturing these costs. Some of these costs can be captured accurately, such as direct costs, but some need to be estimated, such as shared costs. We also looked at sample queries and code snippets to find out costs from log files. Finally, we looked at ways of bringing all these costs together and distributing them to individual landing zones and projects.

As you must have observed, cost management is a complex topic with many variables. Planning and organizing from the beginning will be key to ensuring that the complexity does not overwhelm you later. Start early and start simple. Initially, it may be a simple dashboard or just a report. As the mesh grows, you can make it more sophisticated with custom alerts and dashboards.
