Comparing columns


A very common use of if/else statements is to compare two columns and determine whether there are any differences. For example, let's say that we have inventory data that comes from two different sources. One can be from a report and the other can be from the data that comes from the accounting department. The report data and the data from the accounting department do not match.

At this point, we are not sure who is correct or incorrect but all we know is that they are different. Our task is to find out what the differences are and then create a report on them. The following steps will show you how to complete this task:

  1. Fire up Excel 2013 and create a new spreadsheet. Manually enter the following information:

    On the left-hand side, we have the inventory data from a report. On the right-hand side, we have the inventory data from the accounting department.

  2. The first step is to sort both the sets of information by date. Highlight cells A1 through B11, select the DATA tab, and...
