Customizing the Product Page

We’ve set up our theme. Now, it’s time to add more information to our product page in order to make it enticing and pave the way for users to buy our products.

We’re going to add social proof and a few different types of media to the product page. Social proof shows users that other people are actively using and purchasing products on this site, which makes our site feel less risky, and adding extra media such as videos or 360-degree images will give the user more context to help them determine whether this is the right product for them.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Adding social proof
  • Adding a video tab to the product page
  • Adding 360-degree images

By the end of this chapter, you should know how to make your product page a lot more informative and visually interesting.

Adding social proof (FOMO)

Human beings are social creatures. If we see another person doing something, then we assume that it’s safe and maybe even beneficial for us to do that same thing. That’s why, when we see a whole group of people gathering, we want to see what they’re gathering around. We call this behavior social proof. And it’s something that we can also add to our website.

There are lots of types of social proof, including the following:

  • Product reviews
  • Followers on social media

But in this section, we’re going to talk about seeing other people doing the thing that you want them to do. If you visit the Fomo website (https://fomo.com), you’ll see the activity at the bottom of the site. You can see this in the following screenshot:

We can see that a real user was active on the site. That makes it much more likely for me to do that same...

Adding a video tab

People like to consume information in a variety of ways. Some people like reading text and images, others like word of mouth and talking about a product, and others still prefer a video that’s fully engaging for a few minutes and describes the product in detail. Most of us like some combination of these at different times for different products.

In this section, we’re going to add a video tab to our product page so that there’s a designated place for it – out of the way but easy to navigate.

We’re going to start by installing the video tab and then move on to customizing it.

Installing a video tab

There are a number of plugins that let you add videos to your WooCommerce page, many of which are free. In a previous chapter, we installed Custom Product Tabs for WooCommerce. You are free to reuse that plugin.

Displaying 360-degree images

Humans are very visual. We like to see images alongside written descriptions, and one image isn’t enough. Customers want to see multiple angles. Several well-known online stores (https://cxl.com/blog/how-images-can-boost-your-conversion-rate/) have tested this, and they’ve seen conversions improve by 10-30%. That’s why we’re going to look into displaying images that cover 360 degrees of a product.

We’re going to use WooCommerce 360° Image (https://woocommerce.com/products/woocommerce-360-image/) to show off multiple angles of our products. We’re going to start by installing the plugin, followed by adding product photos. When we’re done, users will be able to see every aspect of our product and will be much more likely to add the item to their cart and check out.

Summary

A default WooCommerce product page is fine. It does the job, but it doesn’t stand out. The technologies that we covered in this chapter make your product page stand out and make it more likely that someone will purchase from you.

By now, you should be able to integrate your store with FOMO and display social proof to new users. You can add a video tab to your product pages and display multiple videos. And you can use a 360-degree image to show multiple angles of a product.

All of these things will make your store more appealing, and they require almost no maintenance or ongoing work.
