What this book covers

Chapter 1, Introduction to 5G, introduces key aspects and methodologies of 5G New Radio, the next-generation radio access network, and the end-to-end system architecture of 5G with a focus on the concepts and drivers.

Chapter 2, End-to-End Architecture Components, Concepts, Security, and Transport, introduces the end-to-end 5G architecture. You’ll learn about new concepts introduced in 5G and then deep dive into the various 5G network functions.

Chapter 3, Building Blocks – Cloud Native Infrastructure, introduces the concept of cloud native infrastructure and service-based architecture in 5G.

Chapter 4, 5G Air Interface and Physical Layer Procedures – Part 1, introduces the general physical layer procedures, waveform, numerology, and the frame structure in NR.

Chapter 5, 5G Air Interface and Physical Layer Procedures – Part 2, covers initial access and beam management together with the physical channels and signals that are utilized.

Chapter 6, 5G Air Interface and Physical Layer Procedures – Part 3, introduces the rest of the downlink and uplink physical channels and signals and other aspects, such as the channel coding scheme and bandwidth parts, that are related to physical layer procedures.

Chapter 7, Packet Core Procedures, delves into the details of 5G packet core call flows.

Chapter 8, Voice over New Radio (VoNR), describes and analyzes VoNR on an end-to-end basis with a focus on the architecture requirements, initial procedures, call establishment, and interworking with other technologies.

Chapter 9, 5G Deployment Options, delves into the details of two main architectures, Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA), that the mobile network operators and communication service providers can choose when transitioning from 4G to 5G technology.

Chapter 10, 5G Non-Standalone Networks, explains in detail the design and implementation of a 5G non-standalone network.

Chapter 11, 5G Standalone Networks, explains in detail the design and implementation of a 5G standalone network.

Chapter 12, 5G Infrastructure Design, focuses on network function virtualization and radio access networks.

Chapter 13, 5G Network Slicing, explains the purpose and the architecture of network slicing.

Chapter 14, 5G and Autonomous Vehicles, explains how 5G technologies are used with connected and autonomous vehicles.

Chapter 15, 5G Fixed Mobile Convergence, describes how the convergence of fixed and mobile broadband services happens over 5G.

Chapter 16, 5G and Satellite Communications, focuses on how terrestrial networks such as 5G work together with non-terrestrial satellite networks.

Chapter 17, Automation, Orchestration, and Testing, describes in detail the role of automation and orchestration in 5G networks and the process of testing a network before going to production.
