Navigating through Advanced Prompts

Now that we have mastered the fundamental concepts of Midjourney, successfully generated images that align with our ideas, and feel comfortable within the tool’s domain, it’s time to explore how we can better adapt it to our needs and demands. In this chapter, we will learn how to use images in our prompts, decipher the complexity and utility of multi-prompts, and discover how we can refine our creations with the help of a special feature that lets you generate multiple versions of your prompt.

In this chapter, we’re going to cover the following topics:

  • Blend mode and image prompting: In this section, we will learn how to sculpt new creations by skillfully guiding and manipulating the model with image prompts.
  • Multi-prompting: Here, we will discover and implement the layered richness of multi-prompts for creating visually intricate outputs.
  • Permutations: Here, readers will learn to use special punctuation to...

Technical requirements

To make the most of this chapter and follow along with the hands-on activities, you’ll need to ensure you’ve set up everything we covered in Chapter 2. Here’s a quick recap:

  • Midjourney account: You’ll need an active account on Midjourney. If you haven’t registered yet, refer back to Chapter 2 for a step-by-step guide.
  • Discord installation: Ensure you have Discord installed on your device, as we’ll be working with it alongside Midjourney. Again, the installation guide is available in Chapter 2.
  • Payment plans: At the moment Midjourney has no free or trial plan. A Midjourney paid plan is necessary. Please ensure you’ve selected the most suitable plan for your needs.
  • Server creation: Having your own server can significantly enhance and expedite your experience with Midjourney. If you’re yet to set up a server in Discord, Chapter 2 covers the process in detail.

Blend mode and image prompting

Blend mode and image prompting are two ways to tell Midjourney what to create using images.

Here are a few examples of what you can do with them:

  • Combine images from different genres to create new and unexpected juxtapositions
  • Use image prompting to generate variations on existing images or create images in the style of a particular artist or genre
  • Use Blend mode and image prompting together to create complex and detailed images that would be difficult or impossible to create with text prompts alone

Blend mode and image prompting can help you create amazing images with Midjourney. Let’s learn the difference between the two.

Blend mode

Blend mode allows you to combine two to five images into a single new image. It’s a user-friendly tool that can be invoked simply by typing /blend in the message box:

Figure 5.1 – Type the /blend command in the message box in the same way as you do with the /imagine command

Figure 5.1 – Type the /blend command in the message box in the same way as...

Multi-prompting

While the concept of multi-prompting might seem daunting at first, it’s a powerful technique in the Midjourney arsenal. Some AI artists have found that as they add more details to their prompts, the results can deviate from their initial expectations, and sometimes this is true. However, it’s essential to understand that multi-prompting isn’t inherently better or worse than traditional prompting—it’s just different. For simple image requests, a standard prompt similar to the ones we’ve tested and worked with might suffice. But if you are seeking more control and nuance in your creations, multi-prompting offers a level of precision that’s hard to match.

Multi-prompting is about dissecting a concept into its elemental components. By employing a double colon (::) as a separator (it’s crucial to ensure there’s no space between the double colons), you can instruct the Midjourney Bot to interpret each segment...

Permutations

Permutations in Midjourney enable us to generate multiple image variations from a single prompt. By using special punctuation, specifically curly brackets {}, we can instruct the AI to produce different combinations that we specify. This feature is akin to coding, where specific markers tell the system how to interpret and execute commands.

For instance, /imagine prompt A {woman, man} in a {forest, city} during {day, night} will yield multiple image variations, such as a woman in a forest during the day, a man in the city at night, and so forth.

The true strength of permutations lies in its flexibility. Let’s see some of the ways you can maximize the potential of permutations.

Permutations and parameters

Permutations allow for the adjustment of parameters and weights within a prompt. This means you can experiment with different aspect ratios, versions, or even chaos values, all within a single prompt. For weight variations, make sure you don’t...

Summary

In this chapter, we showcased the innovative features of Midjourney, starting with Blend mode and image prompting. These tools empower artists to seamlessly combine images, allowing for unique and creative results. We then transitioned into multi-prompting, a technique that offers a more controlled approach to blending using multiple text prompts. This method provides artists with the flexibility to dictate the style, genre, and medium of their creations. Lastly, we explored permutations, a groundbreaking feature that unlocks a multitude of creative options from a single prompt, offering artists the chance to experiment with endless variations.

In the next chapter, we’ll dive into fine-tuning prompts for optimal results. We’ll explore styles, introduce new features such as describe, and uncover techniques to further refine and perfect your artistic endeavors in Midjourney.
