Querying an Index

Querying a RavenDB Index is basically a GET request to a special URL. An index may be generated by the server as a result of the query.

The GET request is addressed to the indexes special RavenDB area structure. The result for this request is a JSON object which contains the array Results and many fields such as IsStale and TotalResults. IsStale is a boolean indicator of whether or not this index (and results) are up to date, and TotalResults is the count of the matching records.

When an index is first created or when new documents are added that could be part of the index, RavenDB runs a background process to update the index. If this process is running while an index query is issued, then the last known results will be returned, but clearly marked as stale with IsStale set to true.
