Business Intelligence

From a business point of view, all the investments made to create a modern analytics platform is to get timely insights from the data. In many of the previous chapters of this book, we discussed topics ranging from data ingestion, data curation, data transformation and data storage. All the investment made in the analytics platform is only worth the time, effort and cost if valuable insights can be drawn from the data. Data consumption patterns dictate what an analytics platform should look like. One of the key data consumption patterns is around presenting the data to different personas in a way so that it can easily be understood. The whole point of doing data analytics is so that business decisions can be taken, to steer the organization towards rapid growth, based on the insights derived from the data. The process of deriving actionable insights from the data is termed as business intelligence (BI). To make it easy to gather insights, many organizations rely...

Amazon QuickSight

Keeping all the challenges of other BI tools in mind, Amazon QuickSight (QS) came about as a cloud based, unified and modern business intelligence tool for visualization and reporting purposes. QuickSight focuses on four key areas.

  1. Enterprise BI capabilities allows businesses to use variety of visual options to interactively analyze all the data in a governed manner
  2. Natural language processing with ML allows faster insights from data without explicitly creating rules of visualization
  3. Enterprise ready reporting makes it easy to create paginated and scheduled reports in the cloud
  4. Embedded analytics makes it easy to incorporate dashboards and visualization on to any custom web application

Let’s look at some of the features of QuickSight that makes it a very appealing BI service for many businesses building their modern data platforms.

  • Fully managed and serverless service with pay-for-usage model. Unified authoring and consumption...

Amazon QuickSight use-cases

Let’s dive straight to how Amazon QuickSight can help solve many of the business intelligence and reporting use-cases that organizations may have.

Interactive dashboards

Use-case for interactive dashboards using Amazon QuickSight

Many LOBs of GreatFin have setup a combination of data lake on Amazon S3 along with data warehouse on Amazon Redshift. The data in the data lake is standardized in the data lake and multiple personas are able to query different datasets using Amazon Athena. Similarly, the data that’s being stored in Amazon Redshift is all ready for consumption in the final base tables. Business also uses other data stores such as Amazon OpenSearch for operational analytics, Amazon Timestream for storing time series data.

One of the key consumption patterns for this data is for business leaders to get an aggregated view of how the company is doing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. The business also wants the ability...

Summary

In this chapter we looked at how organizations leverage business intelligence tools. However, many of the legacy BI tools are either not able to cope with the new use-cases or struggle to keep the costs down.

Amazon QuickSight is a serverless BI service from AWS that’s scalable, flexible, easy to use and operationalize; at the same time helps keep the costs down. QuickSight provides intuitive UI for authoring visualizations, dashboards and reports. The dashboards can also be embedded into other web portals to enable all customers to leverage the full power of a modern BI tool. QuickSight Q provides a ML powered NLQ feature that allows end users to ask questions in plain English and the service generates the necessary visualizations by interpreting the intent behind the question. QuickSight seamlessly integrates with other AWS services, especially with AWS Lake Formation to enable data governance with ease. A variety of BI use-cases can be easily solved using QS as...
