Your First Creation

In the last chapter, we dipped our toes into the world of DALL-E 3. In this chapter, we will be taking a deep dive into the ways of using DALL-E 3. We will cover the process of creating images, making necessary modifications to images, and learning how to save and share the final product.

By the end of this chapter, not only will you be equipped with the knowledge to create with DALL-E 3, but you will also develop an understanding that will allow you to appreciate the harmonious blend of technology and art, a confluence where imagination meets reality.

We’re going to cover the following main topics:

  • Creating your first DALL-E 3 image
  • Modifying your prompt
  • Saving and sharing your image

By the end of this chapter, you will know how to craft and modify prompts effectively to create compelling images with DALL-E 3, as well as how to save and share these creations with others.

Technical requirements

As mentioned in the previous chapter, for the average DALL-E 3 user who isn’t interested in diving deep into training the model and wants to use it to generate images for varied purposes, the technical requirements are significantly reduced and more accessible. You will need the following:

  • Computer: A standard computer or laptop.
  • Internet connectivity: A stable internet connection.
  • Web browser: Modern web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari, are recommended to ensure compatibility and performance when accessing online platforms that utilize DALL-E 3.
  • API access (optional): If you want to integrate DALL-E 3’s capabilities into your software or platform, you might need API keys or access credentials. For example, Mixtiles is an emerging photo-centric start-up that utilizes innovative software and user-friendly hanging solutions to craft stunning photo walls. By leveraging the DALL-E 3 API...

Creating your first DALL-E 3 image

Creating an image with DALL-E 3 involves several steps that allow you to transform simple text prompts into vibrant and detailed visual artwork. In the following steps, we will walk through creating an account, getting familiar with the dashboard, generating your very own DALL-E 3 image, how to save your image, and where to find help:

  • Preparation: You can prepare for using DALL-E 3 by ensuring proper setup with a computer, stable internet, and conducting research for your digital art:
    • Setup: All you need is a computer and a stable internet connection.
    • Research: Before you begin creating your digital art, it is important to refine your concept so you can reverse-engineer your art into your prompts. For example, when I want to create a digital art picture, I will first think about why I am creating it and who my audience is. Then, through this process, I will start to see what prompts will generate the image I am trying to create.
  • Accessing...

Modifying your prompt

In DALL-E 3, while prompts can extend up to a generous limit of 400 words, its extensive training on a dataset encompassing approximately 650 million image and caption pairs equips it to proficiently generate visuals even from concise inputs, including brief phrases or a handful of emojis:

Prompt: 🍕🍷

In the upcoming section, we are going to modify pre-existing image prompts. Modifying your prompt effectively while using DALL-E 3 is a critical step in guiding the AI to generate the specific image you have in mind. As discussed in Chapter 1, we started with the basic concept of a Dalmatian dog; in order to refine the image to better match our vision, we enhanced the prompt by incorporating additional details, specifying a “pop art style” (Figure 1.8), and further delineating a color scheme of “pink and blue on the beach...

Saving and sharing your image

Once you have crafted the images to your satisfaction, the subsequent step is to save your favored creations for future reference.

Saving on the OpenAI platform

Saving your creation on the OpenAI platform is fairly easy:

  1. Download the image by simply pressing the down arrow in the upper left corner (see Figure 2.9).
  2. Name your file when you save it to your desktop or cloud.

The process of saving on Bing Image Creator is similar to the OpenAI platform. It only contains an additional step of adding your creation to a collection.

Saving on the Microsoft Bing Image Creator powered by DALL-E 3

These are the steps to save your creation on the Bing Image Creator:

  1. Download by simply pressing the download button on the right side of the image (see Figure 2.10).
  2. An additional step is to create a collection and save your image to the corresponding collection...

Summary

In this chapter, you took steps toward mastering the initial creation process by learning how to articulate your ideas through precise text prompts. You got an insight into the iterative process of refining these images through revisions to match your envisioned concept perfectly.

You learned to save your crafted and refined images—the pivotal step to preserving and potentially sharing your creations. Along with individual image refinement, you also delved into the organizational feature of DALL-E 3 that enables you to save your works systematically into collections—enhancing the ease of access and categorization.

In the next chapter, we will look at creating variations and fine-tuning in DALL-E 3-generated images.
