Scoping the issue

Let’s face it, not every incident is a security-related incident, and for this reason, it is vital to scope the issue prior to starting an investigation. Sometimes, the symptoms may lead you to initially think that you are dealing with a security-related problem, but as you ask more questions and collect more data, you may realize that the problem was not really related to security.

For this reason, the initial triage of the case has an important role in whether the investigation will succeed. If you have no real evidence that you are dealing with a security issue other than the end user opening an incident saying that their computer is running slow and they think it is compromised, then you should start with basic performance troubleshooting, rather than dispatching a security responder to initiate an investigation.
