How can someone become a good information security professional?

Nowadays, organizations are looking for good security professionals, especially with the aggressive move to cloud technologies and full dependency on technology in all work aspects.

Based on my experience, I would highly recommend anyone joining information security to have the following:

  • Solid basic knowledge: Always remember that knowledge is power. Solid basic knowledge is a must. Networking skills are essential for any information security professional. This knowledge includes TCP/IP, subnets, DNS, DHCP, routers, switches, and other networking general concepts. Completing the CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ certification and then moving to the CISCO CCNA Certification (CISCO Certified Network Associate) or equivalent knowledge is very highly recommended.
