As a part of informative conversation, we have Adil — IT Manager for Home Insurance Systems, Elena — Chief Architect, Jennifer — Project Manager for Auto Insurance Systems, Mark — Project Manager for Home Insurance Systems and Service Manager for Customer Information Service, Mike — IT Manager for Insurance Products, Raj — Technical Lead and Member of SOA Center of Excellence, Ramesh — Solution Architect for Annuity Systems, Spencer — Member of Enterprise Architecture Team and finally Alexandra — Spencer's wife as the key characters. Every organization's journey to SOA adoption must begin somewhere. Some organizations may take a very top-down approach based upon direction from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) or other senior IT leader, while other organizations may begin with a grass-roots effort from within the IT organization, often times during a single project. Beginning the SOA Journey Spencer walked in through the main doors of Advasco, a leading financial conglomerate, on Monday morning knowing it was going to be a busy day. He was part of the Enterprise Architecture team at Advasco, and immediately headed for his weekly meeting with his boss, Elena, the Chief Architect. "Come on in, Spencer," she said. "As you know, we've been given a big challenge over the next few months." Late last week, the head of the sales and marketing for the insurance division announced that they needed to improve the way they interacted with their customers. Advasco began as a typical financial services company, but had recently expanded into the insurance area through acquisition. They began by acquiring a company that provided homeowner's policies in several Midwest states. Over the next few years, Advasco had acquired several other regional insurance companies. This resulted in an increase in the number of insurance products that it offered, as well as turning Advasco into a nationwide provider. Unfortunately, Advasco was struggling to increase the number of insurance products per customer. Analysis of the situation had determined that while the sales staff of the original organizations had been combined, each of the different insurance products relied on different applications for customer management. As a result, it was far more difficult for the sales agents to know what insurance products any given customer had. After discussing it with Mike, the IT manager supporting insurance products, IT was given the task of providing the sales agents and marketing staff for the insurance division with a single view of the customer. Elena then said to him, "I had a meeting with Mike to discuss their new initiative to provide a single view of the customer to the sales agents and marketing staff. While he has some great developers in his area, he asked me if Enterprise Architecture could provide some architectural guidance to their effort. Given the excellent integration work you did when Advasco acquired our first company in the insurance area, I think you'd do a great job on this effort." "It certainly sounds like an exciting project," said Spencer, "I'd love to help out. Just last week, I met with my own insurance agent and saw first hand the frustration he had in trying to see the different insurance products that I have for my family." "I'm glad to hear that," said Elena, "I'd like you to meet with Mike today and start coming up with an architecture for the effort. I know you've been reading about SOA. Perhaps this effort can serve as a good pilot for some of the techniques." Spencer agreed. He left Elena's office and went to his desk to set up a meeting with Mike. This was going to be an exciting effort. This initiative was highly visible within the organization, since Advasco's customer approval rating had been taking a beating over the past two years. In addition, Elena knew that Spencer had been researching SOA. In his reading, he felt that SOA had great potential to change the way that Advasco built applications. This effort would provide an opportunity to try out some of the technologies associated with it. Later that afternoon, Spencer met with Mike to go through the existing applications. Mike said, "Unfortunately, the situation is a mess. Right now, the application that handles our auto insurance business is completely independent from the application that handles our home insurance business. The same thing is true for the life insurance business. They each have their own databases, requiring our agents to enter all of the customer information in multiple times. It creates a nightmare for our billing department, especially when trying to compute discounts for multiple policy holders. These applications have all been built using different technologies, including COBOL, VB.NET, and Java." Spencer said, "Well, let's take a managed approach to this effort. Which are the two insurance lines where we most frequently see repeat customers?" Mike replied, "The most common case is for a customer to hold both an auto insurance policy and a homeowner's policy. It's an easy way to get a multiple policy discount." "Well, why don't we start with those two systems and see what we can do. I've been reading about SOA and I think it could provide the right approach for this effort." "I'll trust you on this one Spencer. Elena spoke very highly of you in our meeting last week. As long as you don't think adopting new approaches will impact the timelines, I'm okay with it. The insurance sales and marketing group is under a ton of pressure to get our customer approval rating back up where it should be as quickly as possible." The next day, Spencer met with the managers responsible for the auto insurance systems and the home insurance systems. Spencer kicked off the meeting, "We're here to discuss how we can make things better for our sales staff. Right now, they have to deal with two separate applications. As a result, sometimes they don't know when they're dealing with someone who is already a customer. Other times, we wind up with inconsistent records across the two systems, or have problems keeping records up-to-date when a customer moves." Tim, the manager for the auto insurance systems immediately jumped into the conversation, "If we could get the home insurance system to use our customer database, our problems would go away." Adil, the manager for the home insurance systems, responded to Tim, "We've spent the last 15 years evolving our application and database. It would be much more expensive for us to try to move all our data into your system." Spencer could sense the tension in the room. Both of these managers had invested many years in their systems, and neither one wanted to relinquish any amount of control. "I don't think consolidating the data will work with the timelines we've been given. What I'd like to do is to create a new customer information service that will provide an abstraction layer in front of both of your databases. You'll both need to modify your applications to use the service rather than going directly to the database, but the service will ensure that both systems remain in sync. In addition, you'll have access to additional information about the customers in each other's systems that you can now incorporate into your applications. Then, at a later time, we can pursue consolidating the databases into a single one. With the service in place, you won't need to make any changes to the front end of your applications when that occurs." Adil said, "How are you going to make this work? My system leverages a Java front-end talking to our mainframe, while Tim's system is based completely on Microsoft technologies?" Spencer responded, "I think this a great opportunity to leverage web services technology. It claims to provide interoperability across these platforms, let's give it a try." Tim said, "Who's going to write this service?" Spencer suggested, "Since we need to incorporate information from both of your systems, I suggest that we form a team with a developer from each of your groups to design and build the new service." Adil and Tim agreed, and told Spencer that they would let him know what developers they would contribute to the effort. Spencer went back to his desk and knew that he had a real challenge on his hands. While the managers involved had committed developers to the effort, he also sensed that there was some hesitancy about the effort. They knew that changes were needed, but it was clear that neither one wanted to give up the control they currently had over their systems. He was hoping that the right developers would get assigned. He knew that many of them had complained about the redundancy that existed across the various applications, but the scope and timeline of their projects prevented them from doing anything about it. This effort was beginning with the right scope, so as long they met timelines, there was a good chance to make it happen. Over the next few weeks, Spencer's team, including the developers from Adil and Tim's organizations, worked hard to define the new Customer service that both applications would use. The developers were very familiar with the current data models used by each application, and worked together to define the data models and schemas for the new service. While these developers had some knowledge of how the existing applications manipulated the data, they worked solely with each other in defining the functional interface of the service. In the end, the service interface contained some elements of Customer data that was specific to one of the two applications, but they felt that information could be safely ignored by the other application. The First Milestone Soon afterwards, Spencer met with Jennifer, the project manager for the auto insurance application, to discuss their schedule. Spencer said, "Hi Jennifer. I wanted to discuss our delivery schedule with you so we can ensure that you can integrate the new Customer service as part of your effort. I know you're making some additional changes to the application besides the migration to the service." Jennifer took a glance at her project plan and told Spencer, "We're currently planning on going live on October 6th. Our performance tests are planned for September 2nd, and user testing will begin on July 28th." Spencer said, "Okay, we'll plan on targeting those same dates for our service. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything else." Jennifer didn't. Just two weeks later she sent him an email that said, "Spencer, my developers want to know when they'll have a service they can test against. They've told me that they can't do anymore work until it's available." Spencer replied, "I'll have one of my developers provide you the URL for our development service right away." He had his team provide it, and didn't hear anything back from Jennifer's team, so he assumed everything was working well. That lasted for about one week when Jennifer came storming into his cubicle. "What did you do to the service? We were going to demonstrate where we were to one of our users today, and the application crashed when we tried retrieving data," she said. It was clear that it had not been a good morning for her. "We've been testing the integration with the home insurance data system, and have run into some issues, so our development environment has been up and down all day long as we try to determine what the problem is," he replied. "Well, you'd better get it fixed soon. I now have a key user who's very nervous about the stability of this new service-based approach, and my developers are simply telling me that they can't do anything about it. I'm going to report this as a serious issue in our Project Management Office (PMO) update on Thursday." "I'll get right on it, Jennifer. I apologize for this and we'll get it fixed as quickly as we can." Spencer immediately realized where his mistake was. By giving Jennifer's team the URL for the service in his development environment, he was exposing her application to all of the instability that is normally associated with any development environment. From her perspective, however, she didn't care about his development environment; she needed something that was stable so she could execute her tests and provide demonstrations. He gathered his developers and told them that they needed to create a stable version of the service that would be separate from their own development efforts that the auto insurance application could use. He suggested that they determine which of their iterations represented a key milestone from the perspective of the auto insurance application. When those iterations were successfully completed, it would be promoted to the stable environment in use by the auto insurance application. They implemented this plan and things got better, at least from Jennifer's perspective. Unfortunately, Jennifer wasn't the only project manager whose effort was dependent on Spencer's team. Mark was the project manager for the home insurance application, the other consumer of this new service. Like his initial meeting with Jennifer, Spencer met with Mark to find out what his plans were for the home insurance application. Sakai Web Services: Connecting to the Enterprise (Part 1)

Connecting to Sakai is straightforward, and simple tasks, such as automatic course creation, take only a few tens of lines of programming effort. There are significant advantages to having web services in the enterprise. If a developer writes an application that calls a number of web services, then the application does not need to know the hidden details behind the services. It just needs to agree on what data to send. This loosely couples the application to the services. Later, you can replace one web service with another. Programmers do not need to change the code on the application side. SOAP works well with most organizations' firewalls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall), as SOAP uses the same protocol as web browsers. System administrators have a tendency to protect an organization's network by closing unused ports to the outside world. This means that most of the time there is no extra network configuration effort required to enable web services. Another simplifying factor is that a programmer does not need to know the details of SOAP or REST, as there are libraries and frameworks that hide the underlying magic. For the Sakai implementation of SOAP, to add a new service is as simple as writing a small amount of Java code within a text file, which then is automatically compiled and run the first time the service is called. This is great for rapid application development and deployment, as the system administrator does not need to restart Sakai for each change. Just as importantly, the Sakai services use the well-known libraries from the Apache Axis project (http://ws.apache.org/axis/). SOAP is an XML message passing protocol that, in the case of Sakai sites, sits on top of the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). HTTP is the protocol used by web browsers to obtain web pages from a server. The client sends messages in XML format to a service, including the information that the service needs, and then the service returns a message with the results or an error message. A readable reference to this interchange is the book Pro Apache XML by Poornachandra Sarang, PhD (http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/book_review_pro_apache_xml). The full definition of HTTP is given at http://www.w3.org/TR/soap12-part1. The architects introduced SOAP-based web services first to Sakai and later RESTful services. Unlike SOAP, instead of sending XML via HTTP posts to one URL that points to a service, REST sends to a URL that includes information about the entity, such as a user, with which the client wishes to interact. For example, a REST URL for viewing an address book item could look similar to http://host/direct/addressbook_item/15. Applying URLs in this way makes understandable address spaces that are easier for a human to read. This more intuitive approach simplifies coding. Further, SOAP XML passing requires that the client and server parse the XML and at times, the parsing effort is expensive in CPU cycles and response times. The Entity Broker is an internal service that makes life easier for programmers and helps them manipulate entities. Entities in Sakai are managed pieces of data such as representations of courses, users, grade books, and so on. In the newer versions of Sakai, the Entity Broker has the power to expose entities as RESTful services. In contrast, for SOAP services, if you wanted a new service, you would need to write it yourself. Over time, the Entity Broker exposes more and more entities RESTfully, delivering more hooks free to integrate with other enterprise systems. Both SOAP and REST services sit on top of the HTTP protocol, which is explained in the next section of this article. Protocols This section explains how web browsers talk to servers in order to gather web pages. It explains how to use the telnet command and a visual tool called TCPMON (http://ws.apache.org/commons/tcpmon/tcpmontutorial.html) to gain insight into how web services and Web 2.0 technologies work. Playing with Telnet It turns out that message passing occurs via text commands between the browser and the server. Web browsers use HTTP (http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616.html) to get web pages and the embedded content from the server and to send form information to the server. HTTP talks between the client and server via text (7 bit ASCII) commands. When humans talk with each other, they have a wide vocabulary. However, HTTP uses fewer than twenty words. You can experiment directly with HTTP using a Telnet client to send your commands to a web server. For example, if your demonstration Sakai instance is running on port 8080, the following command will get you the login page: telnet localhost 8080GET /portal/login The GET command does what it sounds like and gets a web page. Forms can use the GET verb to send data at the end of the URL. For example, GET /portal/login?name=alan&age=15 is sending the variables name=alan and age=15 to the server. Installing TCPMON You can use the TCPMON tool to view requests and responses from a web browser such as Firefox. One of TCPMON's abilities is that it can act as an invisible man in the middle, recording the messages between the web browser and the server. Once set up, the requests sent from the browser go to TCPMON and TCPMON passes the request on to the server. The server passes back a response and then TCPMON, a transparent proxy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server), returns the response to the web browser. This allows us to look at all requests and responses graphically. First, you can set TCPMON up to listen on a given port number—by convention, normally, port 8888—and then you can configure your web browser to send its requests through the proxy. Then, you can type the address of a given page into the web browser, but instead of going directly to the relevant server, the browser sends the request to the proxy, which then passes it on and passes the response back. TCPMON displays both the request and responses in a window. You can download TCPMON from http://ws.apache.org/commons/tcpmon/download.cgi. After downloading and unpacking, you can, from within the build directory, run either tcpmon.bat for the Windows environment or tcpmon.sh for Unix/Linux environments. To configure a proxy, you can click the Admin tab and then set the Listen Port to 8888 and select the Proxy radio button. After that, clicking Add will create a new tab, where the requests and responses will later be displayed. Your favorite web browser now has to recognize the newly set up proxy. For Firefox 3, you can do this by selecting the menu option Edit/Preferences and then choosing the advanced tab and the network tab, as shown next. You will need to set the proxy options HTTP proxy to 127.0.0.1 and the port number to 8888. If you do this, you will need to ensure that the No proxies text input is blank. Clicking the OK button enables the new settings. To use the Proxy from within Internet Explorer 7 for a Local Area Network (LAN), you can edit the dialog box found under Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN settings. Once the proxy is working, typing http://localhost:8080/portal/login in the address bar will seamlessly return the login page of your local Sakai instance. Otherwise, you will see an error message similar to Proxy Server Refused Connection for Firefox or Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. To turn the proxy settings off, simply select the No Proxies radio box and click OK for Firefox 3, or unselect the Use the proxy server for the LAN tick box in Internet Explorer 7 and click OK. Requests and returned status codes When TCPMON is running a proxy on port 8888, it allows you to view the requests from the browser and the response in an extra tab, as shown in the following screen grab. Notice the extra information that the browser sends as part of the request. HTTP/1.1 defines the protocol and version level and the lines below the GET are header variables. The User-Agent defines which client sent the request. The Accept headers tell the server what the capabilities of the browser are, and the Cookie header defines the value stored in a cookie. HTTP is stateless, that is, in principle; each response is based only on the current request. However, to get around this, persistent information can be stored in cookies. Web browsers normally store their representation of a cookie as a little text file or in a small database on the end users' computers. Sakai uses the supporting features of a servlet container, such as Tomcat, to maintain state in cookies. A cookie stores a session ID, and when the server sees the session ID, it can look up the request's server-side state. Server-side state contains information such as whether the user is logged in or what he or she has ordered. The web browser deletes the local representation of the cookie each time the browser closes. A cookie that is deleted when a web browser closes is known as a session cookie. The server response starts with the protocol followed by a status number. HTTP/1.1 200 OK tells the web browser that the server is using HTTP version 1.1 and it was able to return the requested web page successfully. 2xx status codes imply success. 3xx status codes imply some form of redirection and tell the web browser where to try to pick up the requested resource. 4xx status codes are for client errors, such as malformed requests or lack of permission to obtain the resource. 4xx states are fertile grounds for security managers to look in log files for attempted hacking. 5xx status codes mostly have to do with a failure of the server itself and are mostly of interest to system administrators and programmers during the debugging cycle. In most cases, 5xx status numbers are about either high server load or a broken piece of code. Sakai is changing rapidly and even with the most vigorous testing, there are bound to be the occasional hiccups. You will find accurate details of the full range of status codes at: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html. Another important part of the response is the Content-Type, which tells the web browser which type of material the response is returning so the browser knows how to handle it. For example, the web browser may want to run a plug-in for video types and display text natively. The Content-Length in characters is normally also given. After the header information is finished, there is a newline followed by the content. Web browsers interpret any redirects that are returned by sending extra requests. Web browsers also interpret any HTML pages and make multiple requests for resources such as JavaScript files and images. Modern browsers do not wait until the server returns all the requests, but render the HTML page live as the server returns the parts. The GET verb is not very efficient for posting a large amount of data, as the URL has a length limit of around 2000 characters. Further, the end user can see the form data, and the browser may encode entities such as spaces to make the URL unreadable. There is also a security aspect: if you are typing in passwords in forms using GET, others may see your password or other details. This is not a good idea, especially at Internet Cafés where the next user who logs on can see the password in the browsing history. The POST verb is a better choice. Let us take as an example the Sakai demonstration login page http://localhost:8080/portal/login. The login page itself contains a form tag that points with the POST method to the relogin page. <form method="post" action="http://localhost:8080/portal/relogin" enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded"> Notice the HTML tag also defines the content type. Key features of the Post request compared to the GET are: the form values are stored as content after the header values, there is a newline between the end of the header and the data, and the request mentions data and the amount of data by the use of the Content-Length header value. The essential POST values for a login form with user admin (eid=admin) and password admin (pw=admin) will look like: POST http://localhost:8080/portal/relogin HTTP/1.1Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencodedContent-Length: 31eid=admin&pw=admin&submit=Login POSTs can contain much more information than GETs, and the request hides the values from the Address bar of the web browser. This is not secure. The header is just as visible as the URL, so POST values are also neither hidden nor secure. The only viable solution is for your web browser to encrypt your transactions using SSL/TLS (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2246.txt) for security, and this occurs every time you connect to a server using an HTTPS URL. SOAP Sakai uses the Apache Axis framework, which the developers have configured to accept SOAP calls via POST. SOAP sends messages in a specific XML format with the Content-Type, otherwise known as MIME type, application/soap+xml. A programmer does not need to know much more than that, as client libraries take care of the majority of the excruciating low-level details. An example SOAP message generated by the Perl module SOAP::Lite (http://www.soaplite.com/) for creating a login session in Sakai will look like the following Post data: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><soap:Envelope soap:encodingStyle="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" ><soap:Body><login ><c-gensym3 xsi_type="xsd:string">admin</c-gensym3><c-gensym5 xsi_type="xsd:string">admin</c-gensym5></login></soap:Body></soap:Envelope> There is an envelope with a body containing data for the service to consume. The important point to remember is that both the client and the server have to be able to parse the specific XML schema. SOAP messages can include extra security features, but Sakai does not require these. The architects expect organizations to encrypt web services using SSL/TSL. The last extra SOAP-related complexity is the Web Service Description Language (http://www.w3.org/TR/wsdl). Web services may change location or exist in multiple locations for redundancy. The service writer can define the location of the services and the data types involved with those services in another file, in XML format. JSON Also worth mentioning is JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4627), which is another popular format passed using HTTP. A significant improvement in the quality of the end user experience during web browsing occurred when web developers realized that they could force browsers to load parts of a web page in at a time. This asynchronous loading enables all kinds of whiz-bang features, such as when you type in a search term and can choose from a set of search term completions before pressing submit. Asynchronous loading delivers more responsive and richer web pages that feel more like traditional applications than a plain old web page. JSON is one of the formats of choice for passing asynchronous requests and responses. The asynchronous communication normally occurs through HTTP GET or POST, but with a specific content structure that is designed to be human readable and script language parser-friendly. JSON calls have the file extension .json as part of the URL. As mentioned in RFC 4627, an example image object communicated in JSON looks like: { "Image": { "Width": 800, "Height": 600, "Title": "View from 15th Floor", "Thumbnail": { "Url": "http://www.example.com/image/481989943", "Height": 125, "Width": "100" }, "IDs": [116, 943, 234, 38793] }} To confuse the boundaries between client and server, a lot of the presentation and business logic is locked on the client side in scripting languages such as JavaScript. The scripting language orchestrates the loading of parts of pages and the generation of widget sets. Frameworks such as jQuery (http://jquery.com/) and MyFaces (http://myfaces.apache.org/) significantly ease the client-side programming burden. REST To understand REST, you need to understand the other verbs in HTTP (http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec9.html). The full HTTP set is OPTIONS, GET, HEAD, POST, PUT, DELETE, and TRACE. The HEAD verb returns from the server only the headers of the response without the content, and is useful for clients that want to see if the content has changed since the last request. PUT requests that the content in the request be stored at the particular location mentioned in the request. DELETE is for deleting the entity. REST uses the URL of the request to route to the resource, and the HTTP verb GET is used to get a resource, PUT to update, DELETE to delete, and POST to add a new resource. In general, POST=create an item, PUT=update an item, DELETE=delete an item, and GET=return information on the item. In SOAP, you are pointing directly towards the service the client calls or indirectly via the web service description. However, in REST, part of the URL describes the resource or resources you wish to work with. For example, a hypothetical address book application that lists all email addresses in HTML format would look similar to the following: GET /email To list the addresses in XML format or JSON format: GET /email.xmlGET /email.json To get the first email address in the list: GET /email/1 To create a new email address, of course remembering to add the rest of email details to the end of the GET: POST /email And to delete address 5 in the list: DELETE /email/5 To obtain address 5 in other formats such as JSON or XML, then use file extensions at the end of the URL, for example: GET /email/5.jsonGET /email/5.xml RESTful services are more intuitively descriptive than SOAP services and they enable easy switching of the format from HTML to JSON to fuel dynamic, asynchronously-loaded web sites. Due to the direct use of HTTP verbs by REST, this methodology also fits well with the most common application type: CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) applications, such as the site or user tools within Sakai. Now that we have discussed the theory, in the next section, we shall discuss which Sakai-related SOAP services already exist. Existing web services Sakai has built in, by default, the most community-requested web services, and there are also a few more services in the contributed section of the source code repository. This section describes the currently available services and the next section explains an example use, creating a new user. Recapping terminology In general, developers write web services for other developer's code to connect to (consume). Therefore, terminology can be confusing. In Sakai, a realm is a set of roles and their associated permissions. When you create a site, a copy is made from a specific realm template for that particular site type. The permissions can then be modified for the roles in the site, and members added to the site with one or other of the specific roles. Internally, Sakai uses AuthzGroups to keep track of groups of users. An AuthzGroup is an authorization group (a group of users, each with a role and a set of permissions of functions assigned to each role). A site contains pages; when you click on the tool menu for a given tool, normally, you will see one tool displayed in a page. However, for the home page tool, you will see more tools contained within a page.

Traditionally, bookmarking was done through Internet browsing software, such as Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, or Opera. With social bookmarking, your bookmarks are not confined to one browser, but are stored online. The following two options are available for enabling social bookmarking on your website: Link to each individual social bookmarking service that you wish to use Use a social bookmarking aggregator such as Socializer or AddThis Even if you do not have links to allow visitors to bookmark your website, many services allow their users to install toolbars in their browser, which allows your website to be added anyway. Adding these links will help to spread your wiki and its new skin very fast. Individual Social Bookmarking Services There are huge numbers of social bookmarking services on the Internet, and quite a number of these have become reasonably popular. We will look at some of the more popular bookmarking services such as: Mister Wong Furl Facebook Your Wiki's Audience One thing to consider before adding social bookmarking service links to your wiki is your audience. For instance, if your wiki is technology-related, you may find it better to use Digg than Facebook, as Digg is more popular than Facebook for your wiki's intended audience. If your wiki's visitors are primarily from Germany, you may find Mister Wong more useful than Furl, because Mister Wong is more popular with the German users. There are many other social bookmarking services available, including Del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us) and StumbleUpon (http://stumbleupon.com), which you can use after asking your wiki's visitors by means of a poll, or following simple experimentation. Example of Audience durhamStudent (http://durhamStudent.co.uk) is a niche website aimed at students of Durham University in the UK: The durhamStudent website uses both the methods of social bookmarking discussed earlier, providing links for eKstreme's Socializer and a link to an individual bookmarking service, Facebook: Facebook was linked individually here because it is incredibly popular among the students at Durham University (indeed, the Durham network is only open to those with a university email address). Although Facebook's bookmarking service is accessible through Socializer, it is also linked separately as the website's target audience is more likely to use that service than any other. Mister Wong Mister Wong, http://www.mister-wong.com, is popular with German and other European users (though not so much in Great Britain), and allows the users to store their bookmarks while maintaining their privacy, with the ability to set bookmarks as "public" or "private". Generally, the social bookmarking services ask for two pieces of information when creating a link from your website to them: the URL (address) of the page or website you want to add, and the title of that page or website, as you wish it to be posted. Linking to Mister Wong To link to Mister Wong, create a link where you want your social bookmark to be shown in your MediaWiki template in the following format: http://www.mister-wong.com/index.php?action=addurl&bm_url=www.example. com &bm_description=Your+Website Spaces are automatically escaped with a "+" sign by the majority of social bookmarking services. You don't have to worry about properly escaping spaces in the title of your link when linking to bookmarking services. To use these services with MediaWiki, we will be required to use some PHP. In particular, we will need the following: The page's title, which we can get with <?php $this->text('pagetitle') ?>. The website's address, retrievable with <?php $this->urlencode('serverurl') ?>. For simplicity, we will assume that our visitors will always want to bookmark JazzMeet's homepage, http://www.jazzmeet.com. Thus, the code in our MediaWiki template would appear as follows: <a href= "http://www.mister-wong.com/index.php?action=addurl&bm_url=www.jazzmeet.com &bm_description=JazzMeet" title="Bookmark JazzMeet with Mister Wong">Bookmark JazzMeet with Mister Wong</a> What Mister Wong Users See If a visitor to your wiki decides to bookmark your wiki with Mister Wong, they will be greeted with a screen similar to the following, with fields for the address of the website (URL), title, related keywords ("tags"), and a comment about the website: They are also given the option to bookmark as either "public", allowing other Mister Wong users to see it, or "private", which restricts the bookmarked website to their account only.

MySQL Workbench is a visual database design tool recently released by MySQL AB. The tool is specifically for designing MySQL database. What you build in MySQL Workbench is called physical data model. A physical data model is a data model for a specific RDBMS product; the model in this article will have some MySQL unique specifications. We can generate (forward-engineer) the database objects from its physical model, which in addition to tables and their columns, can also include other objects such as view. MySQL Workbench has many functions and features; this article by Djoni Darmawikarta shows some of them by way of an example. We’ll build a physical data model for an order system where an order can be a sale order or a purchase order; and then, forward-engineer our model into an MySQL database. The physical model of our example in EER diagram will look like in the following MySQL Workbench screenshot. Creating ORDER Schema Let’s first create a schema where we want to store our order physical model. Click the + button (circled in red). Change the new schema’s default name to ORDER. Notice that when you’re typing in the schema name, its tab name on the Physical Schemata also changes accordingly—a nice feature. The order schema is added to the Catalog (I circled the order schema and its objects in red). Close the schema window. Confirm to rename the schema when prompted. Creating Order Tables We’ll now create three tables that model the order: ORDER table and its two subtype tables: SALES_ORDER and PURCHASE_ORDER, in the ORDER schema. First of all, make sure you select the ORDER schema tab, so that the tables we’ll create will be in this schema. We’ll create our tables as EER diagram (EER = Enhanced Entity Relationship). So, double-click the Add Diagram button. Select (click) the Table icon, and then move your mouse onto the EER Diagram canvas and click on the location you want to place the first table. Repeat for the other two tables. You can move around the tables by dragging and dropping. Next, we’ll work on table1, which we’ll do so using the Workbench’s table editor. We start the table editor by right-clicking the table1 and selecting Edit Table. Next, we’ll work on table1, which we’ll do so using the Workbench’s table editor. We start the table editor by right-clicking the table1 and selecting Edit Table. Rename the table by typing in ORDER over table1. We’ll next add its columns, so select the Columns tab. Replace idORDER column name with ORDER_NO. Select INT as the data type from the drop-down list. We’d like this ORDER_NO column to be valued incrementally by MySQL database, so we specify it as AI column (Auto Increment). AI is a specific feature of MySQL database. You can also specify other physical attributes of the table, such as its Collation; as well as other advanced options, such as its trigger and partioning (the Trigger and Partioning tabs). Notice that on the diagram our table1 has changed to ORDER, and it has its first column, ORDER_NO. In the Catalog you can also see the three tables. The black dots on the right of the tables indicate that they’ve been included in an diagram.

Defining a Service We first need to define a service. Our first service will be named learningFirstService. In the folder ${component:learning}, create a new folder called servicedef. In that folder, create a new file called services.xml and enter into it this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <services xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="http://www.ofbiz.org/dtds/services.xsd"> <description>Learning Component Services</description> <service name="learningFirstService" engine="java" location="org.ofbiz.learning.learning.LearningServices" invoke="learningFirstService"> <description>Our First Service</description> <attribute name="firstName" type="String" mode="IN" optional="true"/> <attribute name="lastName" type="String" mode="IN" optional="true"/> </service> </services> In the file ${component:learning}ofbiz-component.xml, add after the last <entity-resource> element this: <service-resource type="model" loader="main" location="service def/services.xml"/> That tells our component learning to look for service definitions in the file ${component:learning}servicedefservices.xml. It is important to note that all service definitions are loaded at startup; therefore any changes to any of the service definition files will require a restart! This map must contain at least one entry. This entry must have the key responseMessage (see org.ofbiz.service.ModelService.RESPONSE_MESSAGE), having a value of one of the following: success or ModelService.RESPOND_SUCCESS error or ModelService.RESPOND_ERROR fail or ModelService.RESPOND_FAIL By using ServiceUtil.returnSuccess() to construct the minimal return map, we do not need to bother adding the responseMessage key and value pair. Another entry that is often used is that with the key successMessage (ModelService.SUCCESS_MESSAGE). By doing ServiceUtil.returnSuccess("Some message"), we will get a return map with entry successMessage of value "Some message". Again, ServiceUtil insulates us from having to learn the convention in key names. Testing Our First Service Stop OFBiz, recompile our learning component and restart OFBiz so that the modified ofbiz-component.xml and the new services.xml can be loaded. For now don't worry about the Full Name label we are setting from the screen. Our service will eventually set that. In the file ${webapp:learning}WEB-INFcontroller.xml, insert a new request map: <request-map uri="TestFirstService"> <event type="service" invoke="learningFirstService"/> <response name="success" type="view" value="TestFirstService"/> </request-map> The control servlet currently has no way of knowing how to handle an event of type service, so in controller.xml we must add a new handler element immediately under the other <handler> elements: <handler name="service" type="request" class="org.ofbiz.webapp.event.ServiceEventHandler"/> <handler name="service-multi" type="request" class="org.ofbiz.webapp.event.ServiceMultiEventHandler"/> We will cover service-multi services later. Finally add a new view map: <view-map name="TestFirstService" type="screen" page="component://learning/widget/learning/LearningScreens.xml#TestFirstService"/> Fire to webapp learning an http OFBiz request TestFirstService, and see that we have successfully invoked our first service: Service Parameters Just like Java methods, OFBiz services can have input and output parameters and just like Java methods, the parameter types must be declared. Input Parameters (IN) Our first service is defined with two parameters: <attribute name="firstName" type="String" mode="IN" optional="true"/> <attribute name="lastName" type="String" mode="IN" optional="true"/> Any parameters sent to the service by the end-user as form parameters, but not in the services list of declared input parameters, will be dropped. Other parameters are converted to a Map by the framework and passed into our static method as the second parameter. Enter for fields First Name, Last Name, and Planet Id values Some, Name, and Earth, respectively. Submit and notice that only the first two parameters went through to the service. Parameter planetId was dropped silently as it was not declared in the service definition. Modify the service learningFirstService in the file ${component:learning}servicedefservices.xml, and add below the second parameter a third one like this: <attribute name="planetId" type="String" mode="IN" optional="true"/> Restart OFBiz and submit the same values for the three form fields, and see all three parameters go through to the service.

The next step would be to play around with Layer Modes which, I believe, is one of the most exciting aspects of graphic design. Let's leave layer “lower shine” for awhile and let's get back to layer “upper shine”, and change its layer mode to make it look more appealing and following a scheme in accordance to the color of the sphere. To do this, let's select “upper shine” layer on the Layers Window and right above the Opacity Slider is a dropdown menu containing lots of interesting layer modes, each having its own distinct advantages. You can play around and choose whichever suits your vision the best. I chose Overlay for that matter. Ever since I've started GIMPing, this layer mode has been my best friend for a couple of years already, it works like a charm most of the time.  I wonder though why on some applications, applying the overlay layer mode does different results.  As in the case of Photoshop, the closest I could get with GIMP's overlay is the Screen mode.  You've got to play around a bit and see which works best for you. Do the same thing for the “lower shine” layer, choosing Overlay as the layer mode.  Then, whenever you see fit, you can duplicate the layers to achieve a multiplied effect of the mode. I did that because it felt that something was still missing in the luminous aspect of the shine. So I selected each layer, duplicated them both and voila. To duplicate a layer, you can either right click on the layer name and choose Duplicate Layer from the choices or just press the Duplicate Button on the bottom part of the Layers Window. Duplicated Layers Next, we'll add additional highlights to better emulate specular reflections. And again, we're exploiting the Ellipse Select Tool and another new technique called Feathering. I don't know exactly the definition of feathering in CG, but as far as my experience goes, feathering is a technique from sets of tools where you soften the edges of a selection creating a subtle transition and blurred edges. Create a new layer at the top of the layer stack and call it “blurred shine”, then give it a Layer Fill Type of Transparency, just like what we did with the previous layers.  And with layer 'blurred shine” active, let's create an elliptical selection on the upper left hand part of the sphere, just where the sharp shine has been cast. Creating the Specular Selection With the selection active, right click on the Image Window and choose Select > Feather, then input a value for the feather and the unit to be used. I used 50 pixels. You might have noticed now that the selection seemed to have become smaller, and that's alright, that means you've done it right.  And with the marching ants still active, grab the Bucket Fill Tool over at the Toolbox Window or press SHIFT + B to activate it. Change your foreground color to something close to white or simply pure white, then with the Bucket Fill Tool active, click on the active selection. Tadaaaa! You just created a replica of a specular highlight, though not so close enough. What's great about feathering selections as opposed to applying a blur filter is that you only blur the selection border and not the entire selection. So, say, you have a picture of yourself and you wanted your face fade out smoothly on a vast landscape that you have photographed. Simply create a selection around your face, then apply a Feather to that selection, invert the selection and delete the outer parts, thus leaving only your face and the landscape behind (supposing you have your picture on a separate layer above the landscape layer.) Feathering the Selection Applying the Color with the Bucket Fill Whew, that was pretty quick, isn't it? I hope you agree with me on that.  If so, let's create another one, though smaller and placed just on the left of the blurred shine.  Create a new layer for this new blurred shine and name it “small blurred shine”.  Follow the same procedure for the feathering and color-filling. I used the same feather value for the smaller selection (even though it obviously is smaller), just so it almost affects the center of the selection, blurring the whole selection already, which is what I like for this part. And then, just like what we did with the upper and lower shine respectively, we'll change the Layer Modes to Overlay and duplicate the layers as we see fit.  Doing so results in this image: Blurred Shines Overlay Our sphere now looks a lot better than it had been when we first added its color. However, the shading still looks a bit flat and volumeless. To deal with that, we'll simulate the strength with which the light diffused our sphere object, creating deeper shadows on the opposite side of the light source. Duplication of layers is not only a matter of multiplying the effects of layer effects or such, but it can also be a good way to trace your changes, or better yet, as safe backups where working on the duplicate doesn't affect the original one and you can go back each time to the untouched layer anytime you want to see the differences that have been made.  But be careful though, the more layers and contents of each layer you have, the more computing memory will be consumed and will eventually cause a system slow down. Let's select the “sphere” layer and duplicate in once.  Automatically, the duplicate layer which is now named “sphere copy” becomes the active layer.  Right Click on “sphere copy” layer and choose Alpha to Selection to create a selection out of the fully opaque sphere. Next step is to shrink the selection such that we create a smaller elliptical selection inside the sphere.  To do this, right click on the Image Window and choose Select > Shrink.  Then on the pop up window that appears, type in an appropriate value for the shrinking. I chose 50 pixels. Shrinking the Selection Shrinked Selection Remember how we moved the selection last time? I believe you do. To translate/move our selection, grab the Ellipse Select Tool and activate the selection by clicking on it (clicking the middle portion of the selection makes this easier) until you see your cursor change into crossed arrows, this means you have just activated the move tool for the selection. And since the light is coming from the upper left direction, we would want to move the selection over to the location where the specular reflections are and where the lightest shading is.  Thats because later on, we'll be using this same selection to create shadows on the opposite side of the shade.  Now go ahead and drag the selection over to the upper left portion of the sphere.

Sending emails Joomla!'s core content management has a built-in feature where visitors are able to send articles to their friends through email. A similar feature can be added to the "Restaurant Reviews" component. The component can be modified to display a link to a form where the email address of a friend can be entered along with a short message. We will create a new view to handle this form. Go to the /components/com_restaurants/views folder of your Joomla! component and create a new folder named email. In this folder, create a file called view.html.php, and load it with the following code: <?phpdefined( '_JEXEC' ) or die( 'Restricted access' );jimport( 'joomla.application.component.view');JTable::addIncludePath(JPATH_COMPONENT_ADMINISTRATOR . After declaring RestaurantsViewEmail as an extension of JView, the display() function pulls in the restaurant review ID from the request. The getInstance() member function of JTable is used to get a reference to a table object for reviews. The review matching the ID is then loaded and assigned to the template using the assignRef() member function. Finally, JView's original display() member function is called. Although the code in view.html.php now loads the review that our visitors are trying to email, the form still needs to be added. The file then outputs a brief message identifying the review by name, so that the visitors are sure of what they are sending. The form then continues with fields for the visitor's name and email address, the email address of their friend, and an optional message. Just after the submit button, there is a series of hidden fields. First, JHTML::_('form.token') is called to generate a token for the request. This is the same style of token as is used in the backend to thwart CSRF attacks, only here it is used to cut down on abuse. Next, the ID of the review being emailed is placed into the form. The task variable is set to sendemail, which is a function that we will add to the controller in a moment. Finally, option is set, so that Joomla! loads the com_restaurants component. Linking the form If you now load index.php?option=com_restaurants&view=email in your browser, you will see this screen: The message at the top of the screen is incomplete as we simply loaded the view without a review id. Although we could add id as a parameter onto the end of the URL, our visitors will not be doing this. They will need a link to follow from the review itself. To add this link, we need to make some small adjustments to the single view. This view first needs to generate URLs to the email view with the ID already included. Your screen should now have an Email this to a friend link, like the following screenshot: When you click on the Email this to a friend link, you will get a screen that looks like the following: Sending email With the form and the navigation in place, we can now focus on creating the function that creates the email and sends it to the correct place. Throughout the creation of this component, we have used member functions of JRequest to filter our input. We will do the same here, but go one step further by verifying that the mail addresses entered are valid. This extra step is necessary as malicious users can otherwise add invalid newline characters to your email fi elds, taking control of the message sending process. Once a remote user has control, the message can be sent anywhere with any text. This is known as an "Email Header Injection attack". If you fail to protect your website against this type of attack, your component could be hijacked and used to send thousands of spam messages without your knowledge. With this caution in mind, we will write the sendemail() function to process the form and send the review. Although this will not prevent spammers from abusing your component, it will slow them down; they will need to load your form and extract the token for each message. Next, the path /administrator/components/com_restaurants/tables is added to the list of paths JTable will use to find table classes. This is necessary because we will be loading the review in a moment, in order to extract the summary and title. The email address of the sender, the address of the recipient, the name of the sender,any added message, and the review's ID are all extracted from the HTTP request.With the exception of the id field, all fields are filtered as strings. The id field is more stringently filtered to ensure that the value is also an integer. Joomla! has a library for handling email data, which we pull in by calling jimport( 'joomla.mail.helper' );. This is used immediately to ensure that the entered email addresses are in a valid format. Both the sender's address and the recipient's address are tested. If either one is in an invalid format or contains newlines, the raiseError() member function of JError is used to stop the script and display a message. The function continues by generating some review-specific data. The review is loaded from the database, and then a link back to the review is built using the review's ID. A subject line is built with the sender's name and the name of the restaurant. The body of the email starts with the name of the review, followed by the review itself. If the visitor added a personal message then this is added, along with their name. The link to the full review is added at the end. With all of the content generated, there is one step left before sending the message. The formats of the email addresses have already been validated, but the sender's name, subject, and body all contain user-supplied data. These must be filtered before they are sent off. The cleanAddress(), cleanSubject(), and cleanBody() member functions of JMailHelper strip out any attempts at email header injections. Finally, the sendMail() member function of JUtility is called to send the email with the sender's address, sender's name, recipient's email address, subject line, and body as the respective parameters. If this function fails for any reason, the raiseError() member function of JError is called and processing stops. Adding a success message When you perform an action that sends an email, most web applications will display an "email success" screen letting you know that the message went through. Our component will be no different. At the end of the sendemail() function, we set the view request variable to email, set the layout request variable to success, and then call the display() member function that defaults to JView::display(). Why aren't we calling $this->setRedirect()?Typically, $this->setRedirect() would be called to tell the controller to redirect the user to a specific page. This time, we have chosen to instead set the request variables and call the display() function directly. This prevents Joomla! from sending a redirect HTTP header to the browser, which ultimately saves another trip to the server. Because we want to display a message instead of going back to the review straight away, this makes sense. It may also be useful in cases where you have a client-side application that would otherwise be confused by a redirect. Instead of creating an entirely separate view to handle the success screen, we have opted instead to set the layout request variable and point back to the email view. This helps us to cut down on the number of views required, and allows us to reuse some of the view code. To add the markup for the success screen, we need to create a new file called success.php to the tmpl folder of the email view. Adding multimedia to multiple choice answers in Moodle quizzes and lessons Sometimes it can be useful to insert multimedia elements into the answers of a multiple choice question in a Moodle lesson or quiz. This can apply to situations where students are required to: Recognize audio excerpts corresponding to text, images, or videos (for example, in music or language courses students have to identify a melody from a music sheet excerpt, or the correct pronunciation of a given text) Recognize video scenes (for example, corresponding to a certain dialogue, gestural conversation, and so on) Adding multimedia to the question body is fairly easy because we can use the HTML editor and just link to a multimedia file, and the Moodle filter will do the rest. But adding questions for which the answer choices are multimedia files is a different story, as there is no HTML editor, just a simple text form. However, this is not complicated with the help of the correct HTML code. For example, in the course, Module 1 - Music Evolves—students have to post excerpts of songs from different moments of a musical genre to a forum topic as attachments. In the same module, we will create a quiz (Mini-quiz – history of music) that will use the excerpts posted by our students in its questions, as an incentive for other students to have a look at their colleagues' work. So, after creating a new quiz and adding a new multiple choice question to it (for example, "Which of the following excerpts refers to medieval music?") we can add links to the MP3 files submitted by students as choices. We can get these links by right-clicking (CTRL+click for Mac users) on the linked MP3 file in the forum post and then clicking on the Copy Link Location option, as shown in the following screenshot: Next, while editing the multiple choice question, we can paste the link location in the answer form, for example, for Choice 1. This is the easy way, as Moodle, with its multimedia filter, will do the rest: As a result, we'll get something like this: However, note that the entire link to the file shows up, which is not very aesthetically-pleasing (and can give clues to the correct answer to students in the filename). We can solve this by using a simple HREF HTML tag in the answer forms, so that we obtain something cleaner, such as this: In this case, we can use the following code: <a href="pasted link location"> link text </a> with a SPACE in the link text: The same concept applies for videos and music from online services (TeacherTube, YouTube, Imeem, and so on) as we can paste the embed code in the answer form. In this case, there is no need to use any extra HTML code. So adding the embed code in the following manner: will result in the following screenshot: When using this process, we should keep in mind a couple of things: The multimedia files that are linked in the choice options MUST be available to the students in the course. If we copy the link location from the files area but the file is not available to the students, we'll have problems. The same applies to attachments in forum posts, with separate groups. Consider the situation where the files linked to in the answer options are those of an attachment in a forum post on the course. Suppose the question is shared and the quiz is restored in another course or exported to another Moodle installation. In this case, there will be problems with the file access as the hyperlink will point to the original source in a particular course, which is not currently available. In the case of videos or audio from online services, embedding may be disabled by request, so these can later become unavailable in the course. Too many links to MP3 files on the same quiz page, and/or MP3 files of considerable size can slow down the page loading. As a possible solution to the first three issues, we can have the multimedia files in a public folder on our server. In this way, files can be accessed from different courses and domains. We could, for example, download a YouTube video and make it available on our server, if this service is blocked in our school or institution. Another option is to upload these files to the course files area (but in this case, the files must be made available to students in the course, by using the Display a directory resource, or they will not have permissions to listen to or see them). There is a trick that can be used to make content available in a course without showing it in the course topics. To do this, we can go to the course settings and add an extra topic, creating the resources and activities that we don't want to show to our students (however, everything for now should be visible, so no "eyes closed" icons!). After we're done, we should go again to the course settings and remove the extra topic. In this way, the content is there, is "visible" from a permissions point of view, but at the same doesn't show in the course. This can be a way of having the files available for quizzes and other activities. As a possible solution to the last problem, we can use page breaks, or have one question per page in the quiz, so that students can only load one question at a time. Another solution is to reduce the file sizes, either by slicing or encoding the files in other formats. In the case of a MP3, reducing the bitrate could be an option. Adding multimedia to quizzes, lessons, and assignments Remember that multimedia can be used in interesting ways in not only multiple choice answers but also in question bodies and lesson content and assignments. We can create lessons in a tutorial style, with videos followed by some questions on the video's content, leading to different lesson branches according to the answers, or assignments can be presented as quick briefing videos. And don't forget that if we want to receive multimedia assignments, we should set this activity to allow students' file uploads. Creating exercises with Hot Potatoes Hot Potatoes (http://hotpot.uvic.ca) from Half Baked Software allows us to create interactive web games and puzzles in a simple way. One of the advantages of Hot Potatoes over Moodle's quiz engine is that Hot Potatoes makes it easier to create exercises, and some of these are very different from the ones available in Moodle, for example crosswords, and finding pairs via drag and drop. The license for this software is a peculiar one, as it allows free use by individuals working for state-funded educational institutions that are non-profit making, on the condition that the material produced using the application is freely available to anyone via the Web (this means that a Moodle course without access to guests, without a key wouldn't probably qualify). Other uses require a license, so we should keep this in mind. We need to register the software at http://hotpot.uvic.ca/reg/register.htm. A key will be sent to our email inbox and we can then register it going to Help | Register and filling in the details. There are six different types of exercises that we can create with this software: JQuiz - question-based exercises JCloze - fill in the gaps exercises JMatch - matching exercises JMix - jumble exercises JCross - crosswords The Masher - linked exercises of the different types mentioned above We will only take a look at the JCross and JMix exercises, as the other formats can be achieved with the question types that Moodle provides in quizzes and lessons. However, you should try them and see for yourself how easy it can be!

Gateways provide the connectivity required to reach other systems. These systems can be other sipXecs PBX's, traditional phone lines, or Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs).Connecting the IP phone system to the outside world is one of the most difficult tasks in making the phone system work. If the network infrastructure is configured properly for quality of service, the connection to the outside world can most likely be the source of any call quality problems. Traditional analog Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines are the largest source of frustration. If you can avoid them by utilizing a digital type of service or an ITSP, by all means take that avenue. For those not so lucky, you'll learn more about them then you ever thought you needed to. Typically, volume levels, line disconnect, and echo are the most common problems. Most gateways will have some advanced settings for dealing with these issues but they are different for every manufacturer. Adding gateways There are three types of gateways that can be configured to work in sipXecs; managed, unmanaged, and SIP Trunks. A managed gateway is a hardware device that connects to a traditional phone line. sipXecs knows how to generate configuration files (plug and play) for it. An unmanaged gateway is either a hardware device for which sipXecs doesn't know how to generate configuration files, or it may be another SIP PBX. A SIP Trunk is a connection to an ITSP. Managed gateways At present, there are eight gateways for which sipXecs generates configuration information (ACME 1000 and AudioCodes Models MP114, MP118, Mediant 1000/2000/3000/BRI, and TP260). This is just a small cross section of gateways available in the market. If your gateway is not in this list, see the following Unmanaged gateways subsection. The following detailed information about managed gateways may prove to be useful in setting up an unmanaged gateway. For the following example screens, we'll utilize an AudioCodes MP114 FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) gateway. This particular gateway has four analog ports for connecting to POTS lines. Information on the gateway is available at http://www.audiocodes.com/products/mediapack-1xx. To  add the gateway, click on the Gateways menu item in the  Devices menu. As shown in the following screenshot, there are no gateways configured by default. To add the gateway, click on the Gateways menu item in the Devices menu. As shown in the following screenshot, there are no gateways configured by default. To add a managed gateway, click on the Add new gateway drop-down box and select the appropriate gateway. The gateway configuration page will be displayed as follows: The following configuration information can be configured on this page (click on the Show Advanced Settings hyperlink to display all configuration items): Name: A name given to the gateway (no spaces). Address: The IP address of the gateway or the fully qualified hostname of the gateway (see manufacturer's documentation for information on configuring IP address and other basic settings). Port: An optional setting for UDP or TCP port if a non-standard port is used. Set to 0 to ignore this field. Transport protocol : This can be manually configured to UDP or TCP to force the SIP transport protocol. If it is set to Auto, the transport is determined through a DNS query. Serial Number : This is the Ethernet MAC address of the gateway. Firmware Version : Certain gateways may have different configuration file information or formats depending on the version of firmware in the device. Select the version of firmware that is loaded in the gateway (see manufacturer's documentation). Location: It is possible to restrict the gateway by selecting a specific location for which it can be used. A location is represented by a group of users. A user group must be created for every location that needs to be distinguished (remember that users can be in more than one group). This setting allows routing of calls based on the location or the user from which the call originates (source routing). This is useful if users located in a branch office would like to have a gateway preference so that calls are routed through their local gateway, for example, to preserve WAN bandwidth or to use caller ID offered by an analog gateway based on the PSTN number assigned to it. Only if that gateway is not available, will call routing fall back to other gateways specified for the corresponding dialing rule. Shared: If this setting is checked, this gateway can be used by any user in any location, even if a specific location is selected. This setting is checked by default so that users in an identified location still use their preferred gateway, but the gateway can also be used by other users in other locations. Description : This is for documenting the system configuration. Information about the lines connected to the gateway is very useful here. With all of the configuration information entered, click on the OK button and the Gateway page will be displayed as follows with the new gateway on it. Our Target Module: What We Want Before we begin developing a module, here's a brief overview of what we want to accomplish. The module we will write in this article is the Philosophy Quotes module (philquotes will be our machine-readable name). The goal of this module will be to create a block that displays pithy philosophical quotes. We will implement the following features: Quotes should be stored along with other basic content, making it possible to add, modify, and delete this content in exactly the same way that we create other articles. Since our existing themes aren't aware of this quotes module, it must provide some default styling. We will progress through the creation of this module by first generating a new "quote" content type, and then building a theme-aware module. Creating a Custom Content Type As Drupal evolved, it incorporated an increasingly sophisticated method for defining content. Central to this system is the idea of the content type. A content type is a definition, stored in Drupal's database, of how a particular class of content should be displayed and what functionality it ought to support. Out of the box, Drupal has two defined content types: Page and Story. Pages are intended to contain content that is static, like an "About Us" or "Contact Us" page. Stories, on the other hand, are intended to contain more transient content—news items, blog postings, and so on. Creating new pages or stories is as simple as clicking on the Create Content link in the default menu. Obviously, not all content will be classified as either a page or a story, and many sites will need specialized content types to adequately represent a specific class of content. Descriptions of events, products, component descriptions, and so on might all be better accomplished with specialized content types. Our module is going to display brief quotes. These quotes shouldn't be treated like either articles or pages. For example, we wouldn't want a new quote to be displayed along with site news in the center column of our front page. Thus, our quotes module needs a custom content type. This content type will be very simple. It will have two parts: the text of the quote and the origin of the quote. For example, here's a famous quote: The life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.—Thomas Hobbes. The text of this quote is "The life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short", and the origin in this example is Thomas Hobbes. We could have been more specific and included the title of the work (Leviathan) or even the exact page reference, edition, and so on. But all this information, in our simple example, would be treated as the quote's origin. Given the simplicity of our content type, we can simply use the built-in Drupal content type tool to create the new type. To generate even more sophisticated content types, we could install the CCK (Content Creation Kit) module, and perhaps some of the CCK extension modules. CCK provides a robust set of tools for defining custom fields, data types, and features. But here our needs are simple, so we won't need any additional modules or even any custom code to create this new content type. Using the Administration Interface to Create a Content Type The process of creating our custom content type is as simple as logging into Drupal and filling out a form. The content type tool is in Administer | Content management | Content types. There are a couple of tabs at the top of the page: Clicking the Add content type tab will load the form used to create our new content type. On this form, we need to complete the Name and Type fields—the first with a human-friendly name, and the second with a computer-readable name. Description is often helpful. In addition to these fields, there are a few other form fields under the Submission form settings and Workflow settings that we need to change. In the Submission form settings section, we will change the labels to match the terminology we have been using. Instead of Title and Body, our sections will be Origin and Text. Changing labels is a superficial change. While it changes the text that is displayed to users, the underlying data model will still refer to these fields as title and body. We will see this later in the article. In the Workflow settings section, we need to make sure that only Published is checked. By default, Promoted to front page is selected. That should be disabled unless you want new quotes to show up as content in the main section of the front page. Once the form is complete, pressing the Save content type button will create the new content type. That's all there is to it. The Create content menu should now have the option of creating a new quote: As we continue, we will create a module that displays content of type quote in a block. Before moving on, we want a few pieces of content. Otherwise, our module would have no data to display. Here's the list of quotes (as displayed on Administer | Content management | Content) that will constitute our pool of quotations for our module.

Each site is represented as a community and each community is made up of a lot of pages, for example, public pages and private pages. In order to build web sites, we need to manage communities and, further, manage pages for each community. The Communities portlet provides the ability to create and manage communities and their users, as well as of the Manage Pages portlet. Extending Communities portlet The Communities portlet provides the ability to create and manage communities and their users. A community is a special group holding a number of users who share common interests. By default, a community is represented by the Group_ table with fields such as groupId, companyId, creatorUserId, name, description, type, typeSettings, friendlyURL, active, and so on. Now let's take an in-depth look at the customization of the community. As shown in the following screenshot, we may want to add one searchable field for each community, which is Keywords. For example, suppose we are creating a new community with the name Book Street, and the description a community for website www.bookpubstreet.com. Now we have a chance to add the new Keywords field with the value, for example, Book; Street; Palm Tree; Publication. Similarly, when editing the properties of a community—for example Name, Description, Type, and Active—we again have a chance to edit Keywords. In addition, we expect to have more fields in the customized communities: Created (when the community was created), ModifierUserId (who modified the community), and Modified (when the community was modified). As shown in the preceding screenshot, when listing communities, not only should the default fields (for example, Name, Type, Members, Online Now, Active, Pending Requests) and Actions icons (for example, Edit, Permissions, Manage Pages, Assign User Roles, Assign Members, Leave, and Delete) be displayed, but also the customized columns (for example, the username and Keywords) should be displayed. How do we implement these features? In this article, we're going to show how to customize the Communities portlet using the above requirements as examples. Obviously, it is open for you to customize this portlet in a number of ways according to your own requirements. In general, the processes for customization of this portlet should be the same. Building Ext Communities portlet The Communities portlet can be used to create and manage new portal communities and their users. As you can see, a community can be regarded as a separate portal instance; each community gets its own set of pages, content management system, shared calendar, and default permissions. Moreover, a user belonging to multiple communities can navigate among them within the same portal session. Generally speaking, we do not want to update the Communities portlet, but keep it as it is. Our goal is to customize and extend it. In general, this can be done by using the following two steps: Build a customized Ext Communities portlet, which has exactly the same functions, look, and feel as that of the original Communities portlet. Extend this customized portlet and let it have an additional model and service, and moreover, its own look and feel. In this part, let's build the Ext Communities portlet, having exactly same functions, look, and feel as that of the Communities portlet. Constructing the portlet Now let's define a Struts portlet with the name "Ext Communities". We first need to configure it in both portlet-ext.xml and liferay-portlet-ext.xml, and then set the title in Language-ext.properties, and then add the Ext Communities portlet to the Book category in liferay-display.xml. Locate the portlet-ext.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines between </portlet> and </portlet-app> and save the file: <portlet> <portlet-name>extCommunities</portlet-name> <display-name>Ext Communities</display-name> <portlet-class>com.liferay.portlet.StrutsPortlet</portlet-class> <init-param><name>view-action</name> <value>/ext/communities/view</value></init-param> <expiration-cache>0</expiration-cache> <supports><mime-type>text/html</mime-type></supports> <resource-bundle> com.liferay.portlet.StrutsResourceBundle </resource-bundle> <security-role-ref> <role-name>power-user</role-name> </security-role-ref> <security-role-ref> <role-name>user</role-name> </security-role-ref> </portlet> As shown in the code above, the portlet-name element contains the canonical name of the portlet (for example, extCommunities). The display-name element contains a short name that is intended to be displayed in the portal (for example, Ext Communities). The portlet-class element contains the fully qualified class name of the portlet (for example, com.liferay.portlet.StrutsPortlet). The init-param element contains a name-value pair, for example view-action-ext/communities/view, as an initialization parameter of the portlet. Further, the expiration-cache defines expiration-based caching for this portlet. The supports element contains the supported MIME-type. The resource-bundle element contains a resource bundle class, for example com.liferay.portlet. StrutsResourceBundle. Finally, the security-role-ref element contains the declaration of a security role reference in the code of the web application. Secondly, let's register the extCommunities portlet in liferay-portlet-ext.xml as follows: Locate the liferay-portlet-ext.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines immediately after <!-- Custom Portlets --> and save it: <portlet> <portlet-name>extCommunities</portlet-name> <struts-path>ext/communities</struts-path> <use-default-template>false</use-default-template> <restore-current-view>false</restore-current-view> </portlet> As shown in the code above, the Ext Communities portlet is registered in the portal. The portal will check struts-path to see whether a user has the required permissions to access the portlet or not. As you can see, struts-path has the value ext/communities. It means that all requests to the ext/communities/* path are considered a part of this portlet scope. Only those users whose request paths match ext/communities/* will be granted access. Moreover, the use-default-template element has the value false, so the portlet will not use any user's default template. The restore-current-view element has the value false so the portlet will reset the current view when toggling between maximized and normal states. Thirdly, add a title (for example, Ext Communities), for the Ext Communities portlet at Language-ext.properties as follows: Locate the Language-ext.properties file in the /ext/ext-impl/src/content folder and open it. Add the following line after javax.portlet.title.book_reports=Reports for Books and save it: javax.portlet.title.extCommunities=Ext Communities The code above provides mapping for the title of the portlet. If the mapping is not provided, the portal will show the default title javax.portlet.title.extCommunities. Finally, add the Ext Communities portlet to the Book category in liferay-display.xml as follows: Locate the liferay-display.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEBINF folder and open it. Add the following line immediately after the line <portlet id="book_reports" /> and save it: <portlet id="extCommunities" /> As shown in the code above, it adds the Ext Communities portlet to the category Book. From now on, you are able to select this portlet from the Book category directly when adding portlets to pages. Setting up actions Now, let's set up all actions required for the Ext Communities portlet. We need to prepare an action class, for example, ExtEditGroupAction. So how do we build this action? You can build the actions from scratch, but our purpose is to customize and extend the Communities portlet. In one word, we expect to reuse the out of the box portlet source code as much as possible and to write minimum code. As mentioned earlier, we have the portal project for the portal source code in the Eclipse IDE, which is referred to as the /portal prefix. We also have the ext project for customized code, which is referred to as the /ext prefix. The following is a process flow to build the ExtEditGroupAction action class of the Ext Communities portlet. Create a com.ext.portlet.communities.action package in the /ext/ext-impl/src folder. Create an ExtEditGroupAction class in this package and open it. Documentation—if there is one word that installs fear in most developers, it must be this one. No one in their right mind would argue the value of documentation, but it is the actual act of writing it that concerns developers so. The secret of creating good documentation is to make the process of doing so as painless as possible, and if we are lucky maybe even attractive, to the developers. The only practical way to achieve that is to reduce friction. The last thing we need when we are in middle of fixing a bug is to wrestle with our word processor, or even worse try to find the right document to update. What's in a name?Throughout the rest of this article, we will refer to various URLs that point to specific areas of our Trac environment, Subversion repository, or WebDAV folders. Whenever you see servername, replace it with your own server name. Making Documentation Easy One of the reasons Trac works so well for managing software development is because it is browser based. Apart from our development environment, the browser, along with our email client, are the next most likely applications we are going to have installed and running on our computer. If access to our Trac environment is only a click away, it stands to reason that we are more likely to use it. We can refer to Trac as a "wiki on steroids" because of the way the developers have integrated the typical features of a wiki throughout the whole product. However, for all the extra features and integration, at its heart Trac is basically just a wiki and this is the main reason why it so useful in helping smooth the documentation process. A wiki is a web application that allows visitors to create and modify its content. Let's expand on that slightly. As well as letting us view content—like a normal website—a wiki lets us create or edit the content as we desire. This could take the form of creating new content, or simply touching up the spelling on something that already exists. While the general idea with a wiki is that anyone can edit them, in practice this can lead to abuse, vandalism, or spam. The obvious solution to this is to involve people to authenticate the edit. Do we really need this security?Yes. Having these security requirements provides us with accountability. We will always be able to see when something is done, but by enforcing security we can see who did it. While this does cause some administrative overhead to create and maintain authentication details for anyone involved with our development projects, the benefits outweigh the costs. Accessing Trac Before we look at how to modify and create pages, let's see how our Trac environment looks to a normal (i.e. unauthenticated) user. To do this we need to open our web browser and enter the URL http://servername/projects/sandbox into the address bar and then press the Enter key. This will take us to the default page (which is actually called WikiStart). When we access our project as an unauthenticated (or anonymous in Trac parlance) user, the majority of it will look and act like a normal website and the wiki in particular seems just like the usual collection of interlinked pages. However, as soon as we authenticate ourselves to Apache (which passes that information on to Trac), it all changes. If we click the Login link in the top right of the page now, we will be presented with our browser's usual authentication dialog box as shown in the following screenshot. Input the proper username and password and click OK. If we enter them correctly we will be taken back to the same page, but this time there will be two differences. Firstly, instead of the login link we will see the text logged in as followed by the username we used and a Logout link. Secondly, if we scroll to the bottom of the page there are some buttons that allow us to modify the page in various ways. Anonymous users have permission to only view wiki pages, while authenticated users have full control. We should try that out now—click the Logout link and scroll down again, and you will see that the buttons are absent.

In this article, we will use an example from our demonstration application, Ikon Do It. The code from this article is in the packages jet.ikonmaker and jet.ikonmaker.test. The Ikon Do It 'Save as' Dialog The 'Ikon Do It' application has a Save as function that allows the icon on which we are currently working to be saved with another name. Activating the Save as button displays a very simple dialog for entering the new name. The following figure shows the 'Ikon Do It' Save as dialog. Not all values are allowed as possible new names. Certain characters (such as '*') are prohibited, as are names that are already used. In order to make testing easy, we implemented the dialog as a public class called SaveAsDialog, rather than as an inner class of the main user interface component. We might normally balk at giving such a trivial component its own class, but it is easier to test when written this way and it makes a good example. Also, once a simple version of this dialog is working and tested, it is possible to think of enhancements that would definitely make it too complex to be an inner class. For example, there could be a small status area that explains why a name is not allowed (the current implementation just disables the Ok button when an illegal name is entered, which is not very user-friendly). The API for SaveAsDialog is as follows. Names of icons are represented by IkonName instances. A SaveAsDialog is created with a list of existing IkonNames. It is shown with a show() method that blocks until either Ok or Cancel is activated. If Ok is pressed, the value entered can be retrieved using the name() method. Also note that the constructor of SaveAsDialog does not have parameters that would couple it to the rest of the system. This means a handler interface is not required in order to make this simple class testable. The text field is a sensible size. The Ok button is disabled. The Cancel button is enabled. The dialog is a sensible size. Usability: The Escape key cancels the dialog. The Enter key activates the Ok button. The mnemonics for Ok and Cancel work. Correctness. The Ok button is disabled if the entered name: Contains characters such as '*', '', '/'. Is just white-space. Is one already being used. API test: unit tests for each of the public methods. As with most unit tests, our test class has an init() method for getting an object into a known state, and a cleanup() method called at the end of each test. The instance variables are: A JFrame and a set of IkonNames from which the SaveAsDialog can be constructed A SaveAsDialog, which is the object under test. A UserStrings and a UISaveAsDialog (listed later on) for manipulating the SaveAsDialog with keystrokes. A ShowerThread, which is a Thread for showing the SaveAsDialog. This is listed later on. We'll start with the UI Wrapper class and the init() and cleanup() methods. This is necessary because the inner workings of Swing set the focus within a shown modal dialog as a separate event. That is, we can't assume that showing the dialog and setting the focus within it happen within a single atomic event. Apart from this wrinkle, all of the methods of UISaveDialog are straightforward applications of UI methods. The ShowerThread Class Since SaveAsDialog.show() blocks, we cannot call this from our main thread; instead we spawn a new thread. We want to write tests that check that this thread is blocked while the dialog is showing. Another point of interest is that we've given our new thread a name (by the call super("Shower") in the constructor). It's really useful to give each thread we create a name. Note 1: In this block of code we create a set of IkonNames with which our SaveAsDialog can be created. Note 2: It's convenient to create and show the owning frame and create the SaveAsDialog in a single Runnable. An alternative would be to create and show the frame with a UI call and use the Runnable just for creating the SaveAsDialog. Note 3: Here we start our Shower, which will call the blocking show() method of SaveAsDialog from the event thread. Note 4: Having called show() via the event dispatch thread from our Shower thread, we need to wait for the dialog to actually be showing on the screen. The way we do this is to search for a dialog that is on the screen and has the correct name. Note 5: Once the SaveAsDialog is showing, we can create our UI Wrapper for it. Dynamic Content: What and Why? What do we actually mean when we call it "dynamic"? Does it mean the content itself changes while the customer is browsing through the website? Here, we mean that the content of the whole website changes as time goes by, and more and more content is added. At this stage, it doesn't really matter who or what adds the content—whether it's the Administrator of the osCommerce website, or the website's visitors, or customers, or if the content is downloaded from another source (another website). Why is dynamic content important for osCommerce? It's not only important for osCommerce, but for any website that is supposed to generate traffic and has goals to attract more visitors. The more professional, detailed, and interesting the content of the site is, the more customers will find it potentially useful to visit the website again and read newly posted materials. If the content of the website changes quite often, it will keep constantly growing with the flow of visitors. For online stores, including osCommerce dynamic content is especially important. First of all, it attracts more visitors who are interested in reading new and updated content to the website. It attracts more target audience visitors, who are likely to become customers and existing customers who are likely to become return customers. And all this without any advertising expenses involved! Then, well prepared content increases the visitor's confidence and helps to increase the "visitor to customer" conversion rates. Finally, keyword-rich content is well indexed by search engine crawlers, and search engines are more likely to put a website that constantly updates higher in search results than a website that doesn't. So publishing dynamic content on an osCommerce site may increase the number of visitors, make the website more noticeable in search engines, and also increase the number of sales. How Can We Make Users Participate? By inviting not only readers but also writers it is possible to publish even more articles, news, reviews, etc. Such an approach may also help a lot in attracting users and converting them into customers, as they will know your osCommerce online store as a place in the Internet where they can both buy goods online and read what other customers have to say, express their thoughts, and participate in discussions, etc. Here are several ways to invite users and customers of the website to participate in creating dynamic content: First and most important, is to make customers and website users aware of apossibility to participate and post content or just comments on other posts. As with most good things, this method has been pounced upon by Internet marketers and the net is flooded with a lot of low-quality articles. However, if you produce meaningful articles, you can still get a lot of benefit by distributing your articles. By publishing articles in your own online store, you not only get better indexed by search engines, but what's more important provide useful information to your customers who may be seeking for it. What can the articles be about? Articles can be about products or series of products available forpurchase online. Articles can be about specific features of products and help customers to choose the product they want based on the detailed explanation of what this or that feature actually means. This sort of articles are called "buying guides". Also, in the articles, authors can compare features of several products and provide comprehensive information on what is the best choice forwhat needs. Articles can contain information on the best practice, tips, and tricks for using certain products advertised in the online store. Such articles help customers imagine how they would use this or that product, which increases chances for customers to buy the product online. Articles can be about some interesting facts related to the products sold online (similar to how Starbucks write in their brochures about water supplies in dry regions where their coffee grows). Articles can be about tendencies in certain industries, related to the products available in the online store. Actually blog posts would not be that different to the articles, except that an article is supposed to be more detailed and informative than a blog post. Also, in the blog posts the author often can ask the readers to comment on certain questions/topics to make the discussion live and initiate opinion exchange. When running a business blog, it makes sense to create several categories where the articles could be sorted. This way the customers will be able to find previous posts more easily, and also the blog author(s) will have certain goals, like, for example, to write to each category regularly. Online magazines would contain articles grouped by certain theme and would be issued/updated regularly. With both articles and blog posts, a facility to leave a comment is important to make the customers participate in discussion. For search engine optimization purposes and for better user (reader)-to-customer conversion, links to the related products advertised on the online store can be added to each article or blog post, or be published alongside it. Besides a facility to publish articles in other websites and online magazines, there are a number of content management solutions that can be integrated into the online store. But first, we will consider a very effective and free way to publish content on the Internet. Open encyclopedia Wikipedia.org allows for publishing content. Of course the content needs to be properly prepared and be very detailed and to the point. But if you have anything to say about the products advertised in the online store, the technology that stands behind those products, or e-commerce approach that stands behind the online store, that qualifies to become an article in the electronic encyclopedia—a post in Wikipedia would be one of the most effective ways to promote your online store, its technology, and products. Existing Content Management Solutions There are a number of open-source solutions available to an osCommerce store owner that could be used to publish content directly on the website. We will consider several of the most popular ones, and also general integration practices with osCommerce. osCommerce Information System and News Desk osCommerce Information system is a publicly available contribution that can be downloaded from the osCommerce Contributions website at http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1709. It allows managing content of pages like Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, etc. osCommerce Newsdesk contribution allows for creating multi-level categories of articles and actually posting articles into the categories. It has support for multiple languages and each article can be posted in several languages. It also has built-in support for the so called WYSIWYG HTML editor, so that the Administrator of the online store can create nice-looking HTML content directly in the Administration panel of the osCommerce online store, with no use of any additional HTML authoring tools. Posted articles can be added to the front end of the online store, either into an information box in one of the side columns, or displayed on one page, groupedby categories. Posting an article is really easy. In the Administration panel, one has to fill in the article name, abstract, content, and may also want to fill in page title and keywords for the sake of SEO. Articles can be posted in different topics (categories), and the system allows for a multi-level tree of categories to be built in the Administration panel of the site. When posting an article, one can also select author from thedrop-down list. Authors are managed separately. It becomes possible to add the Tell a Friend box on the Article page, this is configured in the options in the Administration panel. Reviews can be submitted by readers, and, once a review gets approved by the Administrator, the website displays it on the Article page, along with the Article text. Yet another very important feature includes a facility to assign certain products to articles. Once a product gets assigned to an article, a link to the product information page appears underneath the text of the article. This feature works really well for SEO, and also, it helps customers who would be interested in products that are described in the associated article to find them easily. This solution, which is available for free and can be downloaded from the osCommerce website (http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1026) can address the needs of an online shop by allowing posting articles to the website, running online magazines, creating buying guides, and so on.

Acquiring a Domain Name One of the most exciting parts of starting a website is acquiring a domain name. When selecting the perfect name there are a few things that you need to keep in mind: Keep it brief: The more letters that a user has to type in to get to your site the more difficult it is going to be for them to remember your site. The name you select will help to brand your site. If it is catchy then people will remember it more readily. Have alternative names in mind: As time goes on, great domain names are becoming fewer and fewer. Make sure you have a few alternatives to choose from. The first domain name you had in mind may already be taken so having a backup plan will help when you decide to purchase a name. Consider buying additional top-level domain names: Say you've already bought www.DanielsDoughnuts.com. You might want to purchase www.DanielsDoughnuts.net as well to protect your name. Once you have decided on the name you want for your domain, you will need to register it. There are dozens of different sites that allow you to register your domain name as well as search to see if it is available. Some of the better-known domain-registration sites are Register.com and NetworkSolutions.com. Both of these have been around a long time and have good reputations. You can also look into some of the discount registers like BulkRegister (http://www.BulkRegister.com) or Enom (http://www.enom.com). After deciding on your domain name and having it registered, you will need to find a place to physically host your portal. Most registration services will also give the ability to host your site with them but it is best to search for a provider that fits your site's needs. Finding a Hosting Provider When deciding on a provider to host your portal, you will need to consider a few things: Cost: This is of course one of the most important things to look at when looking for a provider. There are usually a few plans to select from. The basic plan usually allows you a certain amount of disk space for a very small price but has you share the server with numerous other websites. Most providers also offer dedicated (you get the server all to yourself) and semi-dedicated (you share with a few others). It is usually best to start with the basic plan and move up if the traffic on your site requires it. Windows servers: The provider you select needs to have Windows Server 200/2003 running IIS (Internet Information Services). Some hosts run alternatives to Microsoft like Linux and Apache web server. .NET framework: The provider's servers need to have the .NET framework version 1.1 installed. Most hosts have installed the framework on their servers, but not all. Make sure this is available because DotNetNuke needs this to run. Database availability: You will need database server availability to run DotNetNuke and Microsoft SQL Server is the preferred back-end. It is possible to run your site off Microsoft Access or MySQL (with a purchased provider), but I would not suggest it. Access does not hold up well in a multi-user platform and will slow down considerably when your traffic increases. Also, since most module developers target MS SQL, MySQL, while able to handle multiple users, does not have the module support. FTP access: You will need a way to post your DotNetNuke portal files to your site and the easiest way is to use FTP. Make sure that your host provides this option. E-mail server: A great deal of functionality associated with the DotNetNuke portal relies on being able to send out e-mails to users. Make sure that you will have the availability of an e-mail server. Folder rights: The ASPNET or NetworkService Account (depending on server) will need to have full permissions to the root and subfolders for your DotNetNuke application to run correctly. Make sure that your host either provides you with the ability to set this or is willing to set this up for you. We will discuss the exact steps later in this article. The good news is that you will have plenty of hosting providers to choose from and it should not break the bank. Try to find one that fits all of your needs. There are even some hosts (www.WebHost4life.com) that will install DotNetNuke for you free of charge. They host many DotNetNuke sites and are familiar with the needs of the portal. Preparing Your Local Site Once you have your domain name and a provider to host your portal, you will need to get your local site ready to be uploaded to your remote server. This is not difficult, but make sure you cover all of the following steps for a smooth transition. Modify the compilation debug setting in the web.config file: You will need to modify your web.config file to match the configuration of the server to which you will be sending your files. The first item that needs to be changed is the debug configuration. This should be set to false. You should also rebuild your application in release mode before uploading. This will remove the debug tokens, perform optimizations in the code, and help the site to run faster: <!-- set debugmode to false for running application --> <compilation debug="false" /> Modify the data-provider information in the web.config file: You will need to change the information for connecting to the database so that it will now point to the server on your host. There are three things to look out for in this section (changes shown overleaf): First, if you are using MS SQL, make sure SqlDataProvider is set up as the default provider. Second, change the connection string to reflect the database server address, the database name (if not DotNetNuke), as well as the user ID and password for the database that you received from your provider. Third, if you will be using an existing database to run the DotNetNuke portal, add an objectQualifier. This will append whatever you place in the quotations to the beginning of all of the tables and procedures that are created for your database. <data defaultProvider=" SqlDataProvider" > <providers> <clear/> <add name = "SqlDataProvider" type = "DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider, DotNetNuke.SqlDataProvider" connectionStringname = "Server=MyServerIP;Database=DotNetNuke; uid=myID;pwd=myPWD;" providerPath = "~ProvidersDataProvidersSqlDataProvider" objectQualifier = "DE" databaseOwner = "dbo" upgradeConnectionString = "" />   Modify any custom changes in the web.config file: Since you set up YetAnotherForum for use on our site, we will need to make the modifications necessary to ensure that the forums connect to the hosted database. Change the to point to the database on the server: <yafnet> <dataprovider>yaf.MsSql,yaf</dataprovider> <connstr> user id=myID;password=myPwd;data source=myServerIP;initial catalog=DotNetNuke;timeout=90 </connstr> <root>/DotNetNuke/DesktopModules/YetAnotherForumDotNet/</root> <language>english.xml</language> <theme>standard.xml</theme> <uploaddir>/DotNetNuke/DesktopModules/yetanotherforum.net /upload/</uploaddir> <!--logtomail>email=;server=;user=;pass=;</logtomail--> </yafnet> Add your new domain name to your portal alias: Since DotNetNuke has the ability to run multiple portals we need to tell it which domain name is associated with our current portal. To do this we need to sign on as host (not admin) and navigate to Admin | Site Settings on the main menu. If signed on as host, you will see a Portal Aliases section on the bottom of the page. Click on the Add New HTTP Alias link:
