Testing a Save As Dialog in Java using Swing

In this article, we will use an example from our demonstration application, Ikon Do It. The code from this article is in the packages jet.ikonmaker and jet.ikonmaker.test. Click here to download the code. The Ikon Do It 'Save as' Dialog The 'Ikon Do It' application has a Save as function that allows the icon on which we are currently working to be saved with another name. Activating the Save as button displays a very simple dialog for entering the new name. The following figure shows the 'Ikon Do It' Save as dialog. Not all values are allowed as possible new names. Certain characters (such as '*') are prohibited, as are names that are already used. In order to make testing easy, we implemented the dialog as a public class called SaveAsDialog, rather than as an inner class of the main user interface component. We might normally balk at giving such a trivial component its own class, but it is easier to test when written this way and it makes a good example. Also, once a simple version of this dialog is working and tested, it is possible to think of enhancements that would definitely make it too complex to be an inner class. For example, there could be a small status area that explains why a name is not allowed (the current implementation just disables the Ok button when an illegal name is entered, which is not very user-friendly). The API for SaveAsDialog is as follows. Names of icons are represented by IkonName instances. A SaveAsDialog is created with a list of existing IkonNames. It is shown with a show() method that blocks until either Ok or Cancel is activated. If Ok is pressed, the value entered can be retrieved using the name() method. Here then are the public methods: public class SaveAsDialog { public SaveAsDialog( JFrame owningFrame, SortedSet<IkonName> existingNames ) { ... } /** * Show the dialog, blocking until ok or cancel is activated. */ public void show() { ... } /** * The most recently entered name. */ public IkonName name() { ... } /** * Returns true if the dialog was cancelled. */ public boolean wasCancelled() { ... }} Note that SaveAsDialog does not extend JDialog or JFrame, but will use delegation. Also note that the constructor of SaveAsDialog does not have parameters that would couple it to the rest of the system. This means a handler interface is not required in order to make this simple class testable. The text field is a sensible size. The Ok button is disabled. The Cancel button is enabled. The dialog is a sensible size. Usability: The Escape key cancels the dialog. The Enter key activates the Ok button. The mnemonics for Ok and Cancel work. Correctness. The Ok button is disabled if the entered name: Contains characters such as '*', '', '/'. Is just white-space. Is one already being used. API test: unit tests for each of the public methods. As with most unit tests, our test class has an init() method for getting an object into a known state, and a cleanup() method called at the end of each test. The instance variables are: A JFrame and a set of IkonNames from which the SaveAsDialog can be constructed A SaveAsDialog, which is the object under test. A UserStrings and a UISaveAsDialog (listed later on) for manipulating the SaveAsDialog with keystrokes. A ShowerThread, which is a Thread for showing the SaveAsDialog. This is listed later on. Some of these are isEnabled(), runInEventThread(), and findNamedComponent(). The new methods are listed now, according to their function. We'll start with the UI Wrapper class and the init() and cleanup() methods. The UISaveAsDialog Class UISaveAsDialog has methods for entering a name and for accessing the dialog, buttons, and text field. This is necessary because the inner workings of Swing set the focus within a shown modal dialog as a separate event. That is, we can't assume that showing the dialog and setting the focus within it happen within a single atomic event. Apart from this wrinkle, all of the methods of UISaveDialog are straightforward applications of UI methods. The ShowerThread Class Since SaveAsDialog.show() blocks, we cannot call this from our main thread; instead we spawn a new thread. This thread could just be an anonymous inner class in the init() method: private void init() { //Not really what we do... //setup...then launch a thread to show the dialog. //Start a thread to show the dialog (it is modal). new Thread( "SaveAsDialogShower" ) { public void run() { sad = new SaveAsDialog( frame, names ); sad.show(); } }.start(); //Now wait for the dialog to show...} The problem with this approach is that it does not allow us to investigate the state of the Thread that called the show() method. We want to write tests that check that this thread is blocked while the dialog is showing. Another point of interest is that we've given our new thread a name (by the call super("Shower") in the constructor). It's really useful to give each thread we create a name. Note 1: In this block of code we create a set of IkonNames with which our SaveAsDialog can be created. Note 2: It's convenient to create and show the owning frame and create the SaveAsDialog in a single Runnable. An alternative would be to create and show the frame with a UI call and use the Runnable just for creating the SaveAsDialog. Note 3: Here we start our Shower, which will call the blocking show() method of SaveAsDialog from the event thread. Note 4: Having called show() via the event dispatch thread from our Shower thread, we need to wait for the dialog to actually be showing on the screen. The way we do this is to search for a dialog that is on the screen and has the correct name. Note 5: Once the SaveAsDialog is showing, we can create our UI Wrapper for it. The cleanup() Method The cleanup() method closes all frames in a thread-safe manner: private void cleanup() { UI.disposeOfAllFrames();}

Dynamic Content: What and Why? What do we actually mean when we call it "dynamic"? Does it mean the content itself changes while the customer is browsing through the website? Here, we mean that the content of the whole website changes as time goes by, and more and more content is added. At this stage, it doesn't really matter who or what adds the content—whether it's the Administrator of the osCommerce website, or the website's visitors, or customers, or if the content is downloaded from another source (another website). Why is dynamic content important for osCommerce? It's not only important for osCommerce, but for any website that is supposed to generate traffic and has goals to attract more visitors. The more professional, detailed, and interesting the content of the site is, the more customers will find it potentially useful to visit the website again and read newly posted materials. If the content of the website changes quite often, it will keep constantly growing with the flow of visitors. For online stores, including osCommerce dynamic content is especially important. First of all, it attracts more visitors who are interested in reading new and updated content to the website. It attracts more target audience visitors, who are likely to become customers and existing customers who are likely to become return customers. And all this without any advertising expenses involved! Then, well prepared content increases the visitor's confidence and helps to increase the "visitor to customer" conversion rates. Finally, keyword-rich content is well indexed by search engine crawlers, and search engines are more likely to put a website that constantly updates higher in search results than a website that doesn't. So publishing dynamic content on an osCommerce site may increase the number of visitors, make the website more noticeable in search engines, and also increase the number of sales. How Can We Make Users Participate? By inviting not only readers but also writers it is possible to publish even more articles, news, reviews, etc. Such an approach may also help a lot in attracting users and converting them into customers, as they will know your osCommerce online store as a place in the Internet where they can both buy goods online and read what other customers have to say, express their thoughts, and participate in discussions, etc. Here are several ways to invite users and customers of the website to participate in creating dynamic content: First and most important, is to make customers and website users aware of apossibility to participate and post content or just comments on other posts. Give them technical means to participate. Ask them to describe their own experience or opinion on a productor service. Ask them how you could improve your services and product range. Even though it's extremely important to get feedback and content from users and customers of an online store, the Administrator of such a site should be ready to fight SPAM, fraudulent posts and content, copyright violations, and content that harasses, abuses, or threatens other users or customers. Different Types of Dynamic Content in osCommerce There can be multiple types of dynamic content present in osCommerce. There are osCommerce contributions and website authoring and building techniques and methods that allow for dynamic content to be added to an osCommerce online store. In this article, we will specifically focus on articles, and how they can used for marketing on various blogs and online magazines. CMS, Blogs, and Online Magazines Article marketing means that you will write articles about your field of interest and distribute them for publication on other websites, blogs, and ezines with a link back to your site. Each time your article is published on a website you get a one-way link to your site. As with most good things, this method has been pounced upon by Internet marketers and the net is flooded with a lot of low-quality articles. However, if you produce meaningful articles, you can still get a lot of benefit by distributing your articles. By publishing articles in your own online store, you not only get better indexed by search engines, but what's more important provide useful information to your customers who may be seeking for it. What can the articles be about? Articles can be about products or series of products available forpurchase online. Articles can be about specific features of products and help customers to choose the product they want based on the detailed explanation of what this or that feature actually means. This sort of articles are called "buying guides". Also, in the articles, authors can compare features of several products and provide comprehensive information on what is the best choice forwhat needs. Articles can contain information on the best practice, tips, and tricks for using certain products advertised in the online store. Such articles help customers imagine how they would use this or that product, which increases chances for customers to buy the product online. Articles can be about some interesting facts related to the products sold online (similar to how Starbucks write in their brochures about water supplies in dry regions where their coffee grows). Articles can be about tendencies in certain industries, related to the products available in the online store. Actually blog posts would not be that different to the articles, except that an article is supposed to be more detailed and informative than a blog post. Also, in the blog posts the author often can ask the readers to comment on certain questions/topics to make the discussion live and initiate opinion exchange. When running a business blog, it makes sense to create several categories where the articles could be sorted. This way the customers will be able to find previous posts more easily, and also the blog author(s) will have certain goals, like, for example, to write to each category regularly. Online magazines would contain articles grouped by certain theme and would be issued/updated regularly. With both articles and blog posts, a facility to leave a comment is important to make the customers participate in discussion. For search engine optimization purposes and for better user (reader)-to-customer conversion, links to the related products advertised on the online store can be added to each article or blog post, or be published alongside it. Besides a facility to publish articles in other websites and online magazines, there are a number of content management solutions that can be integrated into the online store. But first, we will consider a very effective and free way to publish content on the Internet. Open encyclopedia Wikipedia.org allows for publishing content. Of course the content needs to be properly prepared and be very detailed and to the point. But if you have anything to say about the products advertised in the online store, the technology that stands behind those products, or e-commerce approach that stands behind the online store, that qualifies to become an article in the electronic encyclopedia—a post in Wikipedia would be one of the most effective ways to promote your online store, its technology, and products. Existing Content Management Solutions There are a number of open-source solutions available to an osCommerce store owner that could be used to publish content directly on the website. We will consider several of the most popular ones, and also general integration practices with osCommerce. osCommerce Information System and News Desk osCommerce Information system is a publicly available contribution that can be downloaded from the osCommerce Contributions website at http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1709. It allows managing content of pages like Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, etc. osCommerce Newsdesk contribution allows for creating multi-level categories of articles and actually posting articles into the categories. It has support for multiple languages and each article can be posted in several languages. It also has built-in support for the so called WYSIWYG HTML editor, so that the Administrator of the online store can create nice-looking HTML content directly in the Administration panel of the osCommerce online store, with no use of any additional HTML authoring tools. Posted articles can be added to the front end of the online store, either into an information box in one of the side columns, or displayed on one page, groupedby categories. Posting an article is really easy. In the Administration panel, one has to fill in the article name, abstract, content, and may also want to fill in page title and keywords for the sake of SEO. Articles can be posted in different topics (categories), and the system allows for a multi-level tree of categories to be built in the Administration panel of the site. When posting an article, one can also select author from thedrop-down list. Authors are managed separately. It becomes possible to add the Tell a Friend box on the Article page, this is configured in the options in the Administration panel. Reviews can be submitted by readers, and, once a review gets approved by the Administrator, the website displays it on the Article page, along with the Article text. Yet another very important feature includes a facility to assign certain products to articles. Once a product gets assigned to an article, a link to the product information page appears underneath the text of the article. This feature works really well for SEO, and also, it helps customers who would be interested in products that are described in the associated article to find them easily. This solution, which is available for free and can be downloaded from the osCommerce website (http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1026) can address the needs of an online shop by allowing posting articles to the website, running online magazines, creating buying guides, and so on.

SAC at a Glance Point your Browser to the URL of your Scalix server, following this syntax: http:///sac. A pop-up window with the Administration Console Login is opened. If you are using Firefox or another browser with pop-up suppression, perhaps the configuration will need some corrections. Allow the Scalix server to open popups. In Firefox, you can easily configure this by clicking in the yellow bar on top of the displayed page. Other browsers may require editing the preferences. Otherwise, Scalix will provide a web page for you with a link, which opens the Admin Console in the same browser window. Logging In On Scalix 11, the Scalix Administration Login looks like this: Enter the Administrator's name in the field Login ID, exactly as configured during installation. Activate the reminder that you are connected via http and not through https by clicking on option field Not using a secure https connection. Once we have configured https for Scalix, the login dialog will not provide this option anymore. However, enabling https is not that easy, and therefore not standard in Scalix, except for the installations on Red Hat Enterprise. Click on the button Login to start the Administration console. A First Look Around The Scalix Administration Console is a Web application provided by a Tomcat application server. The only requirement for it is a modern browser supporting JavaScript. Firefox and Internet Explorer do fine, Konqueror may work soon. The Admin Console window is split in three parts: A menu with icons called Toolbar A list view on the lower left named Contents Pane and The main window on the right, called Display Pane The icons in the menu bar let you choose the administration task you want to accomplish, the content pane lists the possible entries that can be edited, and the options and parameters of a selected entry are presented in the display pane. By clicking on one of the icons on the Toolbar, you can access the different sections of the Scalix Administration Console. The first three sections are about users, groups, and resources, and will be used in daily administration for adding, deleting or modifying these objects. The section Plugins offers a management GUI for your own or third-party Scalix plug-ins. The Server Info icon leads to a concise list of running services, where the administrator can set the log level of these services and browse through the services' log files. The Settings Icon allows you to set preferences for the server and new users. A concise online help is available, and the icons Refresh and Logout complete the menu bar's icons. Navigating in the Admin Console A nice gadget in SAC is the little icon on the top left of the main window. Surrounded by four arrows, this icon displays the icon of the current section and enables the administrator to navigate in a quick and easy manner through the administration console. Clicking the up or down arrows will select and activate the next entry upwards or downwards in the list view to the left, and the left/right arrows navigate you back and forth in a browser-like fashion. Users, Groups, Resources... Now click on the Users icon in order to switch to the user management dialog. Click on the entry of the only user present at this time, sxadmin. For every user, there are six tabs where the user information is stored. The tab General holds the most important information: Username, Display Name, and Email address. This information is all that is necessary to add an user and use the new account. The other tabs contain contact information, group memberships, and administrative delegations. The mailbox quota, that is the amount of storage that the user's account may sum up to, is configured in the Mail dialog. On the Advanced tab, the administrator can add a role to the user, decide whether this user is a Standard or a Premium User, and give him a different authentication ID. Changing Passwords There are other features in the Admin Console that you will be using frequently once you are master of some Scalix users. One of them is probably the button Change Password on the lower right corner leading directly to the password dialog. This button is present in every user's configuration dialog.

Our Target Module: What We Want Before we begin developing a module, here's a brief overview of what we want to accomplish. The module we will write in this article is the Philosophy Quotes module (philquotes will be our machine-readable name). The goal of this module will be to create a block that displays pithy philosophical quotes. We will implement the following features: Quotes should be stored along with other basic content, making it possible to add, modify, and delete this content in exactly the same way that we create other articles. Since our existing themes aren't aware of this quotes module, it must provide some default styling. We will progress through the creation of this module by first generating a new "quote" content type, and then building a theme-aware module. Creating a Custom Content Type As Drupal evolved, it incorporated an increasingly sophisticated method for defining content. Central to this system is the idea of the content type. A content type is a definition, stored in Drupal's database, of how a particular class of content should be displayed and what functionality it ought to support. Out of the box, Drupal has two defined content types: Page and Story. Pages are intended to contain content that is static, like an "About Us" or "Contact Us" page. Stories, on the other hand, are intended to contain more transient content—news items, blog postings, and so on. Creating new pages or stories is as simple as clicking on the Create Content link in the default menu. Obviously, not all content will be classified as either a page or a story, and many sites will need specialized content types to adequately represent a specific class of content. Descriptions of events, products, component descriptions, and so on might all be better accomplished with specialized content types. Our module is going to display brief quotes. These quotes shouldn't be treated like either articles or pages. For example, we wouldn't want a new quote to be displayed along with site news in the center column of our front page. Thus, our quotes module needs a custom content type. This content type will be very simple. It will have two parts: the text of the quote and the origin of the quote. For example, here's a famous quote: The life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.—Thomas Hobbes. The text of this quote is "The life of man [is] solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short", and the origin in this example is Thomas Hobbes. We could have been more specific and included the title of the work (Leviathan) or even the exact page reference, edition, and so on. But all this information, in our simple example, would be treated as the quote's origin. Given the simplicity of our content type, we can simply use the built-in Drupal content type tool to create the new type. To generate even more sophisticated content types, we could install the CCK (Content Creation Kit) module, and perhaps some of the CCK extension modules. CCK provides a robust set of tools for defining custom fields, data types, and features. But here our needs are simple, so we won't need any additional modules or even any custom code to create this new content type. Using the Administration Interface to Create a Content Type The process of creating our custom content type is as simple as logging into Drupal and filling out a form. The content type tool is in Administer | Content management | Content types. There are a couple of tabs at the top of the page: Clicking the Add content type tab will load the form used to create our new content type. On this form, we need to complete the Name and Type fields—the first with a human-friendly name, and the second with a computer-readable name. Description is often helpful. In addition to these fields, there are a few other form fields under the Submission form settings and Workflow settings that we need to change. In the Submission form settings section, we will change the labels to match the terminology we have been using. Instead of Title and Body, our sections will be Origin and Text. Changing labels is a superficial change. While it changes the text that is displayed to users, the underlying data model will still refer to these fields as title and body. We will see this later in the article. In the Workflow settings section, we need to make sure that only Published is checked. By default, Promoted to front page is selected. That should be disabled unless you want new quotes to show up as content in the main section of the front page. Once the form is complete, pressing the Save content type button will create the new content type. That's all there is to it. The Create content menu should now have the option of creating a new quote: As we continue, we will create a module that displays content of type quote in a block. Before moving on, we want a few pieces of content. Otherwise, our module would have no data to display. Here's the list of quotes (as displayed on Administer | Content management | Content) that will constitute our pool of quotations for our module.

Step 2: Plan out our changes Just like with our module, we are going to be systematic about our customization. This keeps us organized and reduces the chances for mistakes. Really, these changes are so simple we could probably just dive in and do them, but we want to build good habits for when we want to customize more complex extensions. Step 2.1: Decide on our changes Our plugin is going to be essentially the same, hiding or showing parts of our content depending on a particular condition. Only we want to change it so the condition we use is user's subscription and not their user group. We will need to put in some code to search the database for the visitor's subscription information. We also want to clean out any code we don't need, such as the description HTML page and images. We will go a little bit further and rename our extension and functions. One day we may want to distribute this plugin to get some traffic to our site, and help other developers like ourselves. Also, seeing as we are going to rebuild most of this plugin, let's put a short description in to remind us what it is for, or in case we hire another developer to help with our site later, they can see what it does. Step 2.2: Mark out our changes Remember that before we actually make our changes, we want to go through the code and mark them with comments first. This way we are forced to think the whole process through from start to finish before we write any code, and we can see any potential problems before they happen. This beats finding them after we have spent a few hours writing code, and wasting that time going back to repair them. en-GB.plg_content_njaccess.ini First, we are going to edit our language file, en-GB.plg_content_njaccess.ini. If we were making a complex component, we would usually keep the language file open the entire time, and add new entries to it every time we wanted to put some text onto the screen. But our plugin is pretty much a 'behind the scenes' plugin so we don't need much text. So what text do we need? Well, as we discussed above, when we hide some content from a user, we probably want to display a message that tells them that it has been hidden, and that they should get a subscription to read it. We also want to remove the current rich description and replace it with simpler, normal text. So let's add a note to our current code, NINJACONTENT=<IFRAME SRC="../plugins/content/njaccess/njaccess_desc.html" WIDTH=600 HEIGHT=600 FRAMEBORDER=0 SCROLLING=yes></IFRAME> that tells us to delete it completely. Essentially, AJAX is an acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, and it is the technique of using JavaScript and XML to send and receive data between a web browser and a web server. The biggest advantage this technique has is that you can dynamically update a piece of content on your web page or web form with data from the server (preferably formatted in XML), without forcing the entire page to reload. The implementation of this technique has made it obvious to many web developers that they can start making advanced web applications (sometimes called RIAs—Rich Interface Applications) that work and feel more like software applications, instead of like web pages. Keep in mind that the word AJAX is starting to have its own meaning (as you'll also note its occasional use here as well as all over the web as a proper noun, rather than an all-cap acronym). For example, a Microsoft web developer may use VBScript instead of JavaScript to serve up Access Database data that is transformed into JSON (not XML) using a .NET server-side script. Today, that guy's site would still be considered an AJAX site, rather than an AVAJ site (yep, AJAX just sounds cooler). In fact, it's getting to the point where just about anything on a website (that isn't in Flash) that slides, moves, fades, or pops up without rendering a new browser window is considered an 'Ajaxy' site. In truth, a large portion of these sites don't truly qualify as using AJAX, they're just using straight-up JavaScripting. Generally, if you use cool JavaScripts in your WordPress site, it will probably be considered 'Ajaxy', despite not being asynchronous or using any XML. Want more info on this AJAX business? The w3schools site has an excellent introduction to AJAX, explaining it in straight-forward, simple terms. They even have a couple of great tutorials that are fun and easy to accomplish, even if you only have a little HTML, JavaScript, and server-side script (PHP or ASP) experience (no XML experience required) (http://w3schools.com/ajax/). You Still Want AJAX on Your Site? OK! You're here and reading this article because you want AJAX in your WordPress site. I only ask you take the just discussed into consideration and do one or more of the following to prepare. Help your client assess their site's target users first. If everyone is web 2.0 aware, using newer browsers, and are fully mouse-able, then you'll have no problems, AJAX away. But if any of your users are inexperienced with RIA (Rich Interface Application) sites or have accessibility requirements, take some extra care. Again, it's not that you can't or shouldn't use AJAX techniques, just be sure to make allowances for these users. You can easily adjust your site's user expectations upfront, by explaining how to expect the interface to act. Again, you can also offer alternative solutions and themes for people with disabilities or browsers that can't accommodate the AJAX techniques. Remember to check in with Don't Make Me Think, that Steve Krug book I for help with any interface usability questions you may run into. Also, if you're really interested in taking on some AJAX programming yourself, I highly recommend AJAX and PHP by Cristian Darie, Bogdan Brinzarea, Filip Chereches-Tosa, and Mihai Bucica. In it, you'll learn the ins and outs of AJAX development, including handling security issues. You'll also do some very cool stuff like make your own Google-style auto-suggest form and a drag-and-drop sortable list (and that's just two of the many fun things to learn in the book). So, that said, you're now all equally warned and armed with the knowledgeable resources I can think to throw at you. Let's get to it; how exactly do you go about getting something 'Ajaxy' into your WordPress site? Plug-ins and Widgets In these next few sections we're going to cover plug-ins and widgets. Plug-ins and widgets are not a part of your theme. They are additional files with WordPress compatible PHP code that are installed separately into their own directories in your WordPress installation (again, not in your theme directory). Once installed, they are available to be used with any theme that is also installed in your WordPress installation. Even though plug-ins and widgets are not the part of your theme, you might have to prepare your theme to be compatible with them. Let's review a bit about plug-ins and widgets first. Plug-ins WordPress has been built to be a lean, no frills publishing platform. Its simplicity means that with a little coding and PHP know-how, you can easily expand WordPress's capabilities to tailor to your site's specific needs. Plug-ins were developed so that even without a little coding and PHP know-how, users could add extra features and functionality to their WordPress site painlessly, via the Administration Panel. These extra features can be just about anything—from enhancing the experience of your content and forms with AJAX, to adding self-updating 'listening/watching now' lists, Flickr feeds, Google Map info and Events Calendars; you name it, someone has probably written a WordPress plug-in for it. Take a look at the WordPress Plug-in page to see what's available: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ Widgets Widgets are basically just another plug-in! The widget plug-in was developed by AUTOMATTIC (http://automattic.com/code/widgets/), and it allows you to add many more kinds of self-updating content bits and other useful 'do-dads' to your WordPress site. Widgets are intended to be smaller and a little more contained than a full, stand-alone plug-in, and they usually display within the side bar of your theme (or wherever you want; don't panic if you're designing a theme without a sidebar). If you're using WordPress version 2.2 and up, the widget plug-in has become a part of WordPress itself, so you no longer need to install it before installing widgets. Just look through the widget library on WordPress's widget blog and see what you'd like! (http://widgets.wordpress.com/) Trying to download Widgets but the links keep taking you to Plug-in download pages? You'll find that many WordPress Widgets 'piggyback' on WordPress Plug-ins, meaning you'll need the full plug-in installed in order for the widget to work or the widget is an additional feature of the plug-in. So don't be confused when searching for widgets and all of a sudden you're directed to a plug-in page. WordPress Widgets are intended to perform much the same way Mac OS's Dashboard Widgets and Windows Vista Gadgets work. They're there to offer you a quick overview of content or data and maybe let you access a small piece of often used functionality from within a full application or website, without having to take the time to launch the application or navigate to the website directly. In a nutshell, widgets can be very powerful, while at the same time, just don't expect too much. Getting Your Theme Ready for Plug-ins and Widgets In this article, we'll take a look at what needs to be done to prepare your theme for plugins and widgets. Plug-in Preparations Most WordPress Plug-ins can be installed and will work just fine with your theme, with no extra effort on your part. You'll generally upload the plug-in into your wp_content/plugins directory and activate it in your Administration Panel. Here are a few quick tips for getting a plug-in displaying well in your theme: When getting ready to work with a plug-in, read all the documentation provided with the plug-in before installing it and follow the developer's instructions for installing it (don't assume just because you've installed one plug-in, they all get installed the same way). Occasionally, a developer may mention the plug-in was made to work best with a specific theme, and/or the plug-in may generate content with XHTML markup containing a specific CSS id or class rule. In order to have maximum control over the plug-in's display, you might want to make sure your theme's stylesheet accommodates any id or class rules the plug-in outputs. If the developer mentions the plug-in works with say, the Kubrick theme, then, when you install the plug-in, view it using the Kubrick theme (or any other theme they say it works with), so you can see how the plug-in author intended the plug-in to display and work within the theme. You'll then be able to duplicate the appropriate appearance in your theme.

Each site is represented as a community and each community is made up of a lot of pages, for example, public pages and private pages. In order to build web sites, we need to manage communities and, further, manage pages for each community. The Communities portlet provides the ability to create and manage communities and their users, as well as of the Manage Pages portlet. Extending Communities portlet The Communities portlet provides the ability to create and manage communities and their users. A community is a special group holding a number of users who share common interests. By default, a community is represented by the Group_ table with fields such as groupId, companyId, creatorUserId, name, description, type, typeSettings, friendlyURL, active, and so on. Now let's take an in-depth look at the customization of the community. As shown in the following screenshot, we may want to add one searchable field for each community, which is Keywords. For example, suppose we are creating a new community with the name Book Street, and the description a community for website www.bookpubstreet.com. Now we have a chance to add the new Keywords field with the value, for example, Book; Street; Palm Tree; Publication. Similarly, when editing the properties of a community—for example Name, Description, Type, and Active—we again have a chance to edit Keywords. In addition, we expect to have more fields in the customized communities: Created (when the community was created), ModifierUserId (who modified the community), and Modified (when the community was modified). As shown in the preceding screenshot, when listing communities, not only should the default fields (for example, Name, Type, Members, Online Now, Active, Pending Requests) and Actions icons (for example, Edit, Permissions, Manage Pages, Assign User Roles, Assign Members, Leave, and Delete) be displayed, but also the customized columns (for example, the username and Keywords) should be displayed. How do we implement these features? In this article, we're going to show how to customize the Communities portlet using the above requirements as examples. Obviously, it is open for you to customize this portlet in a number of ways according to your own requirements. In general, the processes for customization of this portlet should be the same. Building Ext Communities portlet The Communities portlet can be used to create and manage new portal communities and their users. As you can see, a community can be regarded as a separate portal instance; each community gets its own set of pages, content management system, shared calendar, and default permissions. Moreover, a user belonging to multiple communities can navigate among them within the same portal session. Generally speaking, we do not want to update the Communities portlet, but keep it as it is. Our goal is to customize and extend it. In general, this can be done by using the following two steps: Build a customized Ext Communities portlet, which has exactly the same functions, look, and feel as that of the original Communities portlet. Extend this customized portlet and let it have an additional model and service, and moreover, its own look and feel. In this part, let's build the Ext Communities portlet, having exactly same functions, look, and feel as that of the Communities portlet. Constructing the portlet Now let's define a Struts portlet with the name "Ext Communities". We first need to configure it in both portlet-ext.xml and liferay-portlet-ext.xml, and then set the title in Language-ext.properties, and then add the Ext Communities portlet to the Book category in liferay-display.xml. Locate the portlet-ext.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines between </portlet> and </portlet-app> and save the file: <portlet> <portlet-name>extCommunities</portlet-name> <display-name>Ext Communities</display-name> <portlet-class>com.liferay.portlet.StrutsPortlet</portlet-class> <init-param><name>view-action</name> <value>/ext/communities/view</value></init-param> <expiration-cache>0</expiration-cache> <supports><mime-type>text/html</mime-type></supports> <resource-bundle> com.liferay.portlet.StrutsResourceBundle </resource-bundle> <security-role-ref> <role-name>power-user</role-name> </security-role-ref> <security-role-ref> <role-name>user</role-name> </security-role-ref> </portlet> As shown in the code above, the portlet-name element contains the canonical name of the portlet (for example, extCommunities). The display-name element contains a short name that is intended to be displayed in the portal (for example, Ext Communities). The portlet-class element contains the fully qualified class name of the portlet (for example, com.liferay.portlet.StrutsPortlet). The init-param element contains a name-value pair, for example view-action-ext/communities/view, as an initialization parameter of the portlet. Further, the expiration-cache defines expiration-based caching for this portlet. The supports element contains the supported MIME-type. The resource-bundle element contains a resource bundle class, for example com.liferay.portlet. StrutsResourceBundle. Finally, the security-role-ref element contains the declaration of a security role reference in the code of the web application. Secondly, let's register the extCommunities portlet in liferay-portlet-ext.xml as follows: Locate the liferay-portlet-ext.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines immediately after <!-- Custom Portlets --> and save it: <portlet> <portlet-name>extCommunities</portlet-name> <struts-path>ext/communities</struts-path> <use-default-template>false</use-default-template> <restore-current-view>false</restore-current-view> </portlet> As shown in the code above, the Ext Communities portlet is registered in the portal. The portal will check struts-path to see whether a user has the required permissions to access the portlet or not. As you can see, struts-path has the value ext/communities. It means that all requests to the ext/communities/* path are considered a part of this portlet scope. Only those users whose request paths match ext/communities/* will be granted access. Moreover, the use-default-template element has the value false, so the portlet will not use any user's default template. The restore-current-view element has the value false so the portlet will reset the current view when toggling between maximized and normal states. Thirdly, add a title (for example, Ext Communities), for the Ext Communities portlet at Language-ext.properties as follows: Locate the Language-ext.properties file in the /ext/ext-impl/src/content folder and open it. Add the following line after javax.portlet.title.book_reports=Reports for Books and save it: javax.portlet.title.extCommunities=Ext Communities The code above provides mapping for the title of the portlet. If the mapping is not provided, the portal will show the default title javax.portlet.title.extCommunities. Finally, add the Ext Communities portlet to the Book category in liferay-display.xml as follows: Locate the liferay-display.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEBINF folder and open it. Add the following line immediately after the line <portlet id="book_reports" /> and save it: <portlet id="extCommunities" /> As shown in the code above, it adds the Ext Communities portlet to the category Book. From now on, you are able to select this portlet from the Book category directly when adding portlets to pages. Setting up actions Now, let's set up all actions required for the Ext Communities portlet. We need to prepare an action class, for example, ExtEditGroupAction. So how do we build this action? You can build the actions from scratch, but our purpose is to customize and extend the Communities portlet. In one word, we expect to reuse the out of the box portlet source code as much as possible and to write minimum code. As mentioned earlier, we have the portal project for the portal source code in the Eclipse IDE, which is referred to as the /portal prefix. We also have the ext project for customized code, which is referred to as the /ext prefix. The following is a process flow to build the ExtEditGroupAction action class of the Ext Communities portlet. Create a com.ext.portlet.communities.action package in the /ext/ext-impl/src folder. Create an ExtEditGroupAction class in this package and open it. It overrides two methods (render and processAction) of EditGroupAction. Setting up page flow and page layout We have set up the action. We have also updated the forward path as the portlet.ext.communities.* value. In order to get the page flow working, we need to set up an action path and a page flow. First, let's set up the action path and page flow in struts-config.xml as follows: Locate the struts-config.xml file in the /ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines after <struts-config> <action-mappings> and save it: <!-- Ext Communities --> <action path="/ext/communities/edit_community" type="com.ext.portlet.communities.action. For example, the action path /ext/communities/edit_community is associated with the com.ext.portlet.communities.action.ExtEditGroupAction action and the forward path names portlet.ext.communities.edit_community and portlet.ext.communities.error. Then based on the page flow and JSP files, let's define the page layout in tiles-defs.xml: Locate the tiles-defs.xml file in the ext/ext-web/docroot/WEB-INF folder and open it. Add the following lines after <struts-config> <action-mappings> and save it: <!-- Ext Communities --> <action path="/ext/communities/edit_community" type="com.ext.portlet.communities.action. Task Scheduling with Quartz Both people-oriented and system-oriented BPM systems need a mechanism to execute tasks within an event or temporal constraint, for example, every time a state change occurs or every two weeks. BPM suites address these requirements with a job-scheduling component responsible for executing tasks at a given time. OSWorkflow, the core of our open-source BPM solution, doesn't include these temporal capabilities by default. Thus, we can enhance OSWorkflow by adding the features present in the Quartz open-source project. What is Quartz? Quartz is a Java job-scheduling system capable of scheduling and executing jobs in a very flexible manner. The latest stable Quartz version is 1.6. You can download Quartz from http://www.opensymphony.com/quartz/download.action. Installing The only file you need in order to use Quartz out of the box is quartz.jar. It contains everything you need for basic usage. Quartz configuration is in the quartz. properties file, which you must put in your application's classpath. Basic Concepts The Quartz API is very simple and easy to use. The first concept that you need to be familiar with is the scheduler. The scheduler is the most important part of Quartz, managing as the word implies the scheduling and unscheduling of jobs and the firing of triggers. Task Scheduling with Quartz A job is a Java class containing the task to be executed and the trigger is the temporal specification of when to execute the job. A job is associated with one or more triggers and when a trigger fires, it executes all its related jobs. That's all you need to know to execute our Hello World job. Integration with OSWorkflow By complementing the features of OSWorkflow with the temporal capabilities of Quartz, our open-source BPM solution greatly enhances its usefulness. The Quartz-OSWorkflow integration can be done in two ways—Quartz calling OSWorkflow workflow instances and OSWorkflow scheduling and unscheduling Quartz jobs. We will cover the former first, by using trigger-functions, and the latter with the ScheduleJob function provider. Creating a Custom Job Job's are built by implementing the org.quartz.Job interface as follows: public void execute(JobExecutionContext context) throws JobExecutionException; The interface is very simple and concise, with just one method to be implemented. The Scheduler will invoke the execute method when the trigger associated with the job fires. The JobExecutionContext object passed as an argument has all the context and environment data for the job, such as the JobDataMap. The JobDataMap is very similar to a Java map but provides strongly typed put and get methods. This JobDataMap is set in the JobDetail file before scheduling the job and can be retrieved later during the execution of the job via the JobExecutionContext's getJobDetail().getJobDataMap() method. Trigger Functions trigger-functions are a special type of OSWorkflow function designed specifically for job scheduling and external triggering. These functions are executed when the Quartz trigger fires, thus the name. trigger-functions are not associated with an action and they have a unique ID. You shouldn't execute a trigger-function in your code. To define a trigger-function in the definition, put the trigger-functions declaration before the initial-actions element. ... <trigger-functions> <trigger-function id="10"> <function type="beanshell"> <arg name="script"> propertySet.setString("triggered", "true"); </arg> </function> </trigger-function> </trigger-functions> <initial-actions> ... This XML definition fragment declares a trigger-function (having an ID of 10), which executes a beanshell script. This script will put a named property inside the PropertySet of the instance but you can define a trigger-function just like any other Java- or BeanShell-based function. To invoke this trigger-function, you will need an OSWorkflow built-in function provider to execute trigger-functions and to schedule a custom job—the ScheduleJob FunctionProvider. More about Triggers Quartz's triggers are of two types—the SimpleTrigger and the CronTrigger. The former, as its name implies, serves for very simple purposes while the latter is more complex and powerful; it allows for unlimited flexibility for specifying time periods. SimpleTrigger SimpleTrigger is more suited for job firing at specific points in time, such as Saturday 1st at 3.00 PM, or at an exact point in time repeating the triggering at fixed intervals. The properties for this trigger are the shown in the following table: s. The properties for this trigger are the shown in the following table: Property Description Start time The fire time of the trigger. End time The end time of the trigger. If it is specified, then it overrides the repeat count. Repeat interval The interval time between repetitions. It can be 0 or a positive integer. If it is 0, then the repeat count will happen in parallel. Repeat count How many times the trigger will fire. It can be 0, a positive integer, or SimpleTrigger.REPEAT_INDEFINITELY.     CronTrigger The CronTrigger is based on the concept of the UN*X Cron utility. It lets you specify complex schedules, like every Wednesday at 5.00 AM, or every twenty minutes, or every 5 seconds on Monday. Like the SimpleTrigger, the CronTrigger has a start time property and an optional end time. A CronExpression is made of seven parts, each representing a time component: Each number represents a time part: 1 represents seconds 2 represents minutes 3 represents hours 4 represents the day-of-month 5 represents month 6 represents the day-of-week 7 represents year (optional field) Here are a couple of examples of cron expression: 0 0 6 ? * MON: This CronExpression means "Every Monday at 6 AM". 0 0 6 * *: This CronExpression mans "Every day at 6 am". Scheduling a Job We will get a first taste of Quartz, by executing a very simple job. It is a very simple class that implements the job interface and just prints a message to the console. package packtpub.osw; import org.quartz.Job; import org.quartz.JobExecutionContext; import org.quartz.JobExecutionException; /** * Hello world job. */ public class HelloJob implements Job { public void execute(JobExecutionContext ctx) throws JobExecutionException { System.out.println("Hello Quartz world."); } }   The first three lines of the following code create a SchedulerFactory, an object that creates Schedulers, and then proceed to create and start a new Scheduler. SchedulerFactory schedFact = new org.quartz.impl.StdSchedulerFactory(); Scheduler sched = schedFact.getScheduler(); sched.start(); This Scheduler will fire the trigger and subsequently the jobs associated with the trigger. After creating the Scheduler, we must create a JobDetail object that contains information about the job to be executed, the job group to which it belongs, and other administrative data. JobDetail jobDetail = new JobDetail("myJob", null, HelloJob.class); This JobDetail tells the Scheduler to instantiate a HelloJob object when appropriate, has a null JobGroup, and has a Job name of "myJob". After defining the JobDetail, we must create and define the Trigger, that is, when the Job will be executed and how many times, etc. Trigger trigger = TriggerUtils.makeHourlyTrigger(); // fire every hour trigger.setStartTime(TriggerUtils.getEvenHourDate(new Date())); // start on the next even hour trigger.setName("myTrigger"); The TriggerUtils is a helper object used to simplify the trigger code. With the help of the TriggerUtils, we will create a trigger that will fire every hour. This trigger will start firing the next even hour after the trigger is registered with the Scheduler. The last line of code puts a name to the trigger for housekeeping purposes. Finally, the last line of code associates the trigger with the job and puts them under the control of the Scheduler. sched.scheduleJob(jobDetail, trigger); When the next even hour arrives after this line of code is executed, the Scheduler will fire the trigger and it will execute the job by reading the JobDetail and instantiating the HelloJob.class. This requires that the class implementing the job interface must have a no-arguments constructor. An alternative method is to use an XML file for declaring the jobs and triggers. This will not be covered in the book, but you can find more information about it in the Quartz documentation. Scheduling from a Workflow Definition The ScheduleJob FunctionProvider has two modes of operation, depending on whether you specify the jobClass parameter or not. The ScheduleJob like any FunctionProvider can be declared as a pre or a post function. On the other hand, if you don't declare the jobClass, ScheduleJob will use the WorkflowJob.class as the class implementing the job interface. Customizing the home page in Grails With tagging in place, we can enhance the application to allow users to create their own home page. The aim is to allow users to specify the tags they are interested in, so any content with these tags will be displayed on their home page. This will allow us to break the home page up into two sections: A Most Recent section, containing the last five file uploads and messages A Your Data section, containing all the files and messages that are tagged according to the user's preferences Introducing templates Taking this approach means that files and messages will be displayed in many different places on the site, instead of just the home page. By the end of this article, messages and files will be rendered in the context of: A Most Recent section A Your Data section In the future, we will probably render messages and files in the following contexts as well: Show all files and messages Show files and messages by tags Show files and messages by search results Ideally we want to encapsulate the rendering of a file and a message so they look the same all over the site, and we don't need to duplicate our presentation logic. Grails provides a mechanism to handle this, through GSP, called templates. A template is a GSP file, just the same as our view GSP files, but is differentiated from a view by prefixing the file name with an underscore. We are going to create two templates—one template for messages, which will be called _message.gsp and the other for files, which will be called _file.gsp. The templates will be responsible for rendering a single message and a single file. Templates can be created anywhere under the views folder. The location that they are created in affects the way they are executed. To execute a template we use the grails render tag. Assume that we create our message template under the views/message folder. To render this template from a view in the same folder, we would call the following: <g:render template="message" /> However, if we need to render a message from another controller view, say the home page, which exists under views/home, we would need to call it like so: <g:render template="/message/message" /> Passing data to a template The two examples of executing a template above would only be capable of rendering static information. We have not supplied any data to the template to render. There are three ways of passing data into a template: Send a map of the data into the template to be rendered Provide an object for the template to render Provide a collection of objects for the template to render Render a map This mechanism is the same as when a controller provides a model for a view to render. The keys of the map will be the variable names that the values of the map are bound to within the template. Calling the render tag given below: <g:render template="message" model="[message: myMessage]" /> would bind the myMessage object into a message variable in the template scope and the template could perform the following: <div class="messagetitle"> <g:message code="${message.title}" encodeAs="HTML"/></div> Render an object A single object can be rendered by using the bean attribute: <g:render template="message" bean="${message}" /> The bean is bound into the template scope with the default variable named it: <div class="messagetitle"> <g:message code="${it.title}" encodeAs="HTML"/></div> Render a collection A collection of objects can be rendered by using the collection and var attributes: <g:render template="message" var="message" collection="${messages}" /> When using a collection, the render tag will iterate over the items in the collection and execute the template for each item, binding the current item into the variable name supplied by the var attribute. <div class="messagetitle"> <g:message code="${message.title}" encodeAs="HTML"/></div> Be careful to pass in the actual collection by using ${}. If just the name of the variable is passed through, then the characters in the collection variable name provided will be iterated over, rather than the items in the collection. For example, if we use the following code, the messages collection will be iterated over: <g:render template="message" var="message" collection="${messages}" /> However, if we forget to reference the messages object and just pass through the name of the object, we will end up iterating over the string "messages": <g:render template="message" var="message" collection="messages" /> Template namespace Grails 1.1 has introduced a template namespace to make rendering of templates even easier. This option only works if the GSP file that renders the template is in the same folder as the template itself. Consider the first example we saw when rendering a template and passing a Map of parameters to be rendered: <g:render template="message" model="[message: myMessage]" /> Using the template namespace, this code would be simplified as follows: <tmpl:message message="${myMessage}"/> As we can see, this is a much simpler syntax. Do remember though that this option is only available when the GSP is in the same folder as the template. Create the message and file templates Now, we must extract the presentation logic on the home page, views/home/index.gsp, to a message and file template. This will make the home page much simpler and allow us to easily create other views that can render messages and files. Create two new template files: /views/message/_message.gsp /views/file/_file.gsp Taking the code from the index page, we can fill in _message.gsp as follows: <div class="amessage"> <div class="messagetitle"> <g:message code="message.title" args="${[message.title]}" encodeAs="HTML"/> </div> <div class="tagcontainer"> <g:message code="tags.display" args="${[message.tagsAsString]}" /> </div> <div class="messagetitlesupplimentary"> <g:message code="message.user" args="${[message.user.firstName, message.user. lastName]}"/> </div> <div class="messagebody"> <g:message code="message.detail" args="${[message.detail]}" encodeAs="HTML"/> </div></div> Likewise, the <div> that contains a file panel should be moved over to the new _file.gsp. This means the main content of our home page (views/home/index.gsp) becomes much simpler: <div class="panel"> <h2>Messages</h2> <g:render template="/message/message" collection="${messages}" var="message"/></div><div class="panel"> <h2>Files</h2> <g:render template="/file/file" collection="${files}" var="file"/></div> User tags The next step is to allow users to register their interest in tags. Once we have captured this information then we can start to personalize the home page. This is going to be surprisingly simple, although it sounds like a lot! We just need to: Create a relationship between Users and Tags Create a controller to handle user profiles Create a form that will allow users to specify the tags in which they are interested User to tag relationship Creating a relationship between users and tags is very simple. Users will select a number of tags that they want to watch, but users themselves are not 'tagged', so the User class cannot extend the Taggable class. Otherwise users would be returned when performing a polymorphic query on Taggable for all objects with a certain tag. Besides allowing a user to have a number of tags, it is also necessary to be able to add tags to a user by specifying a space delimited string. We must also be able to return the list of tags as a space delimited string. Create a new controller class called ProfileController.groovy under the grails-app/controller/app folder, and add the following code to it: package appclass ProfileController { def userService def myTags = { return ['user': userService.getAuthenticatedUser() ] } def saveTags = { User.get(params.id)?.overrideTags( params.tags ) redirect( controller:'home' ) }} The myTags action uses userService to retrieve the details of the user making the request and returns this to the myTags view. Remember, if no view is specified, Grails will default to the view with the same name of the action. The saveTags action overrides the existing user tags with the newly submitted tags The myTags form The last step is to create the form view that will allow users to specify the tags they would like to watch. We will create a GSP view to match the myTags action in ProfileController. The form submits the tags to the saveTags action on the ProfileController. The user id is put in a hidden field so we know which user to add the tags to when the form is submitted, and any existing tags for the user are rendered in the text field via the tagsAsString property. Building a CRUD Application with the ZK Framework

An Online Media Library There are some traditional applications that could be used to introduce a framework. One condition for the selection is that the application should be a CRUD (Create —Read—Update—Delete) application. Therefore, an 'Online Media Library', which has all four operations, would be appropriate. We start with the description of requirements, which is the beginning of most IT projects. The application will have the following features: Add new media Update existing media Delete media Search for the media (and show the results) User roles (administrator for maintaining the media and user accounts for browsing the media) In the first implementation round the application should only have some basic functionality that will be extended step by step. A media item should have the following attributes: A title A type (Song or Movie) An ID which could be defined by the user A description An image The most important thing at the start of a project is to name it. We will call our project ZK-Medialib. Setting up Eclipse to Develop with ZK We use version 3.3 of Eclipse, which is also known as Europa release. You can download the IDE from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/. We recommend using the version "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers". First we have to make a file association for the .zul files. For that open the Preferences dialog with Window | Preferences. After that do the following steps: Type Content Types into the search dialog. Select Content Types in the tree. Select XML in the tree. Click Add and type *.zul. See the result. The steps are illustrated in the picture below: With these steps, we have syntax highlighting of our files. However, to have content assist, we have to take care about the creation of new files. The easiest way is to set up Eclipse to work with zul.xsd. For that open the Preferences dialog with Window | Preferences. After that do the following steps: Type XML Catalog into the search dialog. Select XML Catalog in the tree. Press Add and fill out the dialog (see the second dialog below). See the result. Now we can easily create new ZUL files with the following steps: File | New | Other, and select XML: Type in the name of the file (for example hello.zul). Press Next. Choose Create XML file from an XML schema file: Press Next. Select Select XML Catalog entry. Now select zul.xsd: Now select the Root Element of the page (e.g. window). Select Finish. Now you have a new ZUL file with content assist. Go into the generated attribute element and press Alt+Space. Setting up a New Project The first thing we will need for the project is the framework itself. You can download the ZK framework from http://www.zkoss.org. At the time of writing, the latest version of ZK is 2.3.0. After downloading and unzipping the ZK framework we should define a project structure. A good structure for the project is the directory layout from the Maven project (http://maven.apache.org/). The structure is shown in the figure below. The directory lib contains the libraries of the ZK framework. For the first time it's wise to copy all JAR files from the ZK framework distribution. If you unzip the distribution of the version 2.3.0 the structure should look like the figure below. The structure below shows the structure of the ZK distribution. Here you can get the files you need for your own application. For our example, you should copy all JAR files from lib, ext, and zkforge to the WEB-INF/lib directory of your application. It's important that the libraries from ext and zkforge are copied direct to WEB-INF/lib. Additionally copy the directories tld and xsd to the WEB-INF directory of your application. Now after the copy process, we have to create the deployment descriptor (web.xml) for the web application. Here you can use web.xml from the demo application, which is provided from the ZK framework. For our first steps, we need no zk.xml (that configuration file is optional in a ZK application). The application itself must be run inside a JEE (Java Enterprise Edition) Webcontainer. For our example, we used the Tomcat container from the Apache project (http://tomcat.apache.org). However, you can run the application in each JEE container that follows the Java Servlet Specification 2.4 (or higher) and runs under a Java Virtual Machine 1.4 (or higher). Sending emails Joomla!'s core content management has a built-in feature where visitors are able to send articles to their friends through email. A similar feature can be added to the "Restaurant Reviews" component. The component can be modified to display a link to a form where the email address of a friend can be entered along with a short message. We will create a new view to handle this form. Go to the /components/com_restaurants/views folder of your Joomla! component and create a new folder named email. After declaring RestaurantsViewEmail as an extension of JView, the display() function pulls in the restaurant review ID from the request. The getInstance() member function of JTable is used to get a reference to a table object for reviews. The review matching the ID is then loaded and assigned to the template using the assignRef() member function. Finally, JView's original display() member function is called. Although the code in view.html.php now loads the review that our visitors are trying to email, the form still needs to be added. The file then outputs a brief message identifying the review by name, so that the visitors are sure of what they are sending. The form then continues with fields for the visitor's name and email address, the email address of their friend, and an optional message. Just after the submit button, there is a series of hidden fields. First, JHTML::_('form.token') is called to generate a token for the request. This is the same style of token as is used in the backend to thwart CSRF attacks, only here it is used to cut down on abuse. Next, the ID of the review being emailed is placed into the form. The task variable is set to sendemail, which is a function that we will add to the controller in a moment. Finally, option is set, so that Joomla! loads the com_restaurants component. Linking the form If you now load index.php?option=com_restaurants&view=email in your browser, you will see this screen: The message at the top of the screen is incomplete as we simply loaded the view without a review id. Although we could add id as a parameter onto the end of the URL, our visitors will not be doing this. They will need a link to follow from the review itself. To add this link, we need to make some small adjustments to the single view. This view first needs to generate URLs to the email view with the ID already included. Your screen should now have an Email this to a friend link, like the following screenshot: When you click on the Email this to a friend link, you will get a screen that looks like the following: Sending email With the form and the navigation in place, we can now focus on creating the function that creates the email and sends it to the correct place. Throughout the creation of this component, we have used member functions of JRequest to filter our input. We will do the same here, but go one step further by verifying that the mail addresses entered are valid. This extra step is necessary as malicious users can otherwise add invalid newline characters to your email fi elds, taking control of the message sending process. Once a remote user has control, the message can be sent anywhere with any text. This is known as an "Email Header Injection attack". If you fail to protect your website against this type of attack, your component could be hijacked and used to send thousands of spam messages without your knowledge. With this caution in mind, we will write the sendemail() function to process the form and send the review. Although this will not prevent spammers from abusing your component, it will slow them down; they will need to load your form and extract the token for each message. Next, the path /administrator/components/com_restaurants/tables is added to the list of paths JTable will use to find table classes. This is necessary because we will be loading the review in a moment, in order to extract the summary and title. The email address of the sender, the address of the recipient, the name of the sender,any added message, and the review's ID are all extracted from the HTTP request.With the exception of the id field, all fields are filtered as strings. The id field is more stringently filtered to ensure that the value is also an integer. Joomla! has a library for handling email data, which we pull in by calling jimport( 'joomla.mail.helper' );. This is used immediately to ensure that the entered email addresses are in a valid format. Both the sender's address and the recipient's address are tested. If either one is in an invalid format or contains newlines, the raiseError() member function of JError is used to stop the script and display a message. The function continues by generating some review-specific data. The review is loaded from the database, and then a link back to the review is built using the review's ID. A subject line is built with the sender's name and the name of the restaurant. The body of the email starts with the name of the review, followed by the review itself. If the visitor added a personal message then this is added, along with their name. The link to the full review is added at the end. With all of the content generated, there is one step left before sending the message. The formats of the email addresses have already been validated, but the sender's name, subject, and body all contain user-supplied data. These must be filtered before they are sent off. The cleanAddress(), cleanSubject(), and cleanBody() member functions of JMailHelper strip out any attempts at email header injections. Finally, the sendMail() member function of JUtility is called to send the email with the sender's address, sender's name, recipient's email address, subject line, and body as the respective parameters. If this function fails for any reason, the raiseError() member function of JError is called and processing stops. Adding a success message When you perform an action that sends an email, most web applications will display an "email success" screen letting you know that the message went through. Our component will be no different. At the end of the sendemail() function, we set the view request variable to email, set the layout request variable to success, and then call the display() member function that defaults to JView::display(). Why aren't we calling $this->setRedirect()?Typically, $this->setRedirect() would be called to tell the controller to redirect the user to a specific page. This time, we have chosen to instead set the request variables and call the display() function directly. This prevents Joomla! from sending a redirect HTTP header to the browser, which ultimately saves another trip to the server. Because we want to display a message instead of going back to the review straight away, this makes sense. It may also be useful in cases where you have a client-side application that would otherwise be confused by a redirect. Instead of creating an entirely separate view to handle the success screen, we have opted instead to set the layout request variable and point back to the email view. This helps us to cut down on the number of views required, and allows us to reuse some of the view code. To add the markup for the success screen, we need to create a new file called success.php to the tmpl folder of the email view. Introduction Unlike Eclipse IDE, which requires a plug-in, JDeveloper has a built-in provision to establish a JDBC connection with a database. JDeveloper is the only Java IDE with an embedded application server, the Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J). This database-based web application may run in JDeveloper without requiring a third-party application server. However, JDeveloper also supports third-party application servers. Starting with JDeveloper 11, application developers may point the IDE to an application server instance (or OC4J instance), including third-party application servers that they want to use for testing during development. JDeveloper provides connection pooling for the efficient use of database connections. A database connection may be used in an ADF BC application, or in a JavaEE application. A database connection in JDeveloper may be configured in the Connections Navigator. A Connections Navigator connection is available as a DataSource registered with a JNDI naming service. The database connection in JDeveloper is a reusable named connection that developers configure once and then use in as many of their projects as they want. Depending on the nature of the project and the database connection, the connection is configured in the bc4j.xcfg file or a JavaEE data source. Here, it is necessary to distinguish between data source and DataSource. A data source is a source of data; for example an RDBMS database is a data source. A DataSource is an interface that represents a factory for JDBC Connection objects. JDeveloper uses the term Data Source or data source to refer to a factory for connections. We will also use the term Data Source or data source to refer to a factory for connections, which in the javax.sql package is represented by the DataSource interface. A DataSource object may be created from a data source registered with the JNDI (Java Naming and Directory) naming service using JNDI lookup. A JDBC Connection object may be obtained from a DataSource object using the getConnection method. As an alternative to configuring a connection in the Connections Navigator a data source may also be specified directly in the data source configuration file data-sources.xml. In this article we will discuss the procedure to configure a JDBC connection and a JDBC data source in JDeveloper 10g IDE. We will use the MySQL 5.0 database server and MySQL Connector/J 5.1 JDBC driver, which support the JDBC 4.0 specification. In this article you will learn the following: Creating a database connection in JDeveloper Connections Navigator. Configuring the Data Source and Connection Pool associated with the connection configured in the Connections Navigator. The common JDBC Connection Errors. Before we create a JDBC connection and a data source we will discuss connection pooling and DataSource. Connection Pooling and DataSource The javax.sql package provides the API for server-side database access. The main interfaces in the javax.sql package are DataSource, ConnectionPoolDataSource, and PooledConnection. The DataSource interface represents a factory for connections to a database. DataSource is a preferred method of obtaining a JDBC connection. An object that implements the DataSource interface is typically registered with a Java Naming and Directory API-based naming service. DataSource interface implementation is driver-vendor specific. The DataSource interface has three types of implementations: Basic implementation: In basic implementation there is 1:1 correspondence between a client's Connection object and the connection with the database. This implies that for every Connection object, there is a connection with the database. With the basic implementation, the overhead of opening, initiating, and closing a connection is incurred for each client session. Connection pooling implementation: A pool of Connection objects is available, from which connections are assigned to the different client sessions. A connection pooling manager implements the connection pooling. When a client session does not require a connection, the connection is returned to the connection pool and becomes available to other clients. Thus, the overheads of opening, initiating, and closing connections are reduced. Distributed transaction implementation: Distributed transaction implementation produces a Connection object that is mostly used for distributed transactions and is always connection pooled. A transaction manager implements the distributed transactions. An advantage of using a data source is that code accessing a data source does not have to be modified when an application is migrated to a different application server. Only the data source properties need to be modified. A JDBC driver that is accessed with a DataSource does not register itself with a DriverManager. A DataSource object is created using a JNDI lookup and subsequently a Connection object is created from the DataSource object. For example, if a data source JNDI name is jdbc/OracleDS a DataSource object may be created using JNDI lookup. First, create an InitialContext object and subsequently create a DataSource object using the InitialContext lookup method. From the DataSource object create a Connection object using the getConnection() method: InitialContext ctx=new InitialContext(); DataSource ds=ctx.lookup("jdbc/OracleDS"); Connection conn=ds.getConnection(); The JNDI naming service, which we used to create a DataSource object is provided by J2EE application servers such as the Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE (OC4J) embedded in the JDeveloper IDE. A connection in a pool of connections is represented by the PooledConnection interface, not the Connection interface. The connection pool manager, typically the application server, maintains a pool of PooledConnection objects. When an application requests a connection using the DataSource.getConnection() method, as we did using the jdbc/OracleDS data source example, the connection pool manager returns a Connection object, which is actually a handle to an object that implements the PooledConnection interface. A ConnectionPoolDataSource object, which is typically registered with a JNDI naming service, represents a collection of PooledConnection objects. The JDBC driver provides an implementation of the ConnectionPoolDataSource, which is used by the application server to build and manage a connection pool. When an application requests a connection, if a suitable PooledConnection object is available in the connection pool, the connection pool manager returns a handle to the PooledConnection object as a Connection object. If a suitable PooledConnection object is not available, the connection pool manager invokes the getPooledConnection() method of the ConnectionPoolDataSource to create a new PooledConnection object. For example, if connectionPoolDataSource is a ConnectionPoolDataSource object a new PooledConnection gets created as follows: PooledConnection pooledConnection=connectionPoolDataSource.getPooledConnection(); The application does not have to invoke the getPooledConnection() method though; the connection pool manager invokes the getPooledConnection() method and the JDBC driver implementing the ConnectionPoolDataSource creates a new PooledConnection, and returns a handle to it. The connection pool manager returns a Connection object, which is a handle to a PooledConnection object, to the application requesting a connection. When an application closes a Connection object using the close() method, as follows, the connection does not actually get closed. conn.close(); The connection handle gets deactivated when an application closes a Connection object with the close() method. The connection pool manager does the deactivation. When an application closes a Connection object with the close() method any client info properties that were set using the setClientInfo method are cleared. The connection pool manager is registered with a PooledConnection object using the addConnectionEventListener() method. When a connection is closed, the connection pool manager is notified and the connection pool manager deactivates the handle to the PooledConnection object, and returns the PooledConnection object to the connection pool to be used by another application. The connection pool manager is also notified if a connection has an error. A PooledConnection object is not closed until the connection pool is being reinitialized, the server is shutdown, or a connection becomes unusable. In addition to connections being pooled, PreparedStatement objects are also pooled by default if the database supports statement pooling. It can be discovered if a database supports statement pooling using the supportsStatementPooling() method of the DatabaseMetaData interface. The PeparedStatement pooling is also managed by the connection pool manager. To be notified of PreparedStatement events such as a PreparedStatement getting closed or a PreparedStatement becoming unusable, a connection pool manager is registered with a PooledConnection manager using the addStatementEventListener() method. A connection pool manager deregisters a PooledConnection object using the removeStatementEventListener() method. Methods addStatementEventListener and removeStatementEventListener are new methods in the PooledConnection interface in JDBC 4.0. Pooling of Statement objects is another new feature in JDBC 4.0. The Statement interface has two new methods in JDBC 4.0 for Statement pooling: isPoolable() and setPoolable(). The isPoolable method checks if a Statement object is poolable and the setPoolable method sets the Statement object to poolable. When an application closes a PreparedStatement object using the close() method the PreparedStatement object is not actually closed. The PreparedStatement object is returned to the pool of PreparedStatements. When the connection pool manager closes a PooledConnection object by invoking the close() method of PooledConnection all the associated statements also get closed. Pooling of PreparedStatements provides significant optimization, but if a large number of statements are left open, it may not be an optimal use of resources. Thus, the following procedure is followed to obtain a connection in an application server using a data source: Create a data source with a JNDI name binding to the JNDI naming service. Create an InitialContext object and look up the JNDI name of the data source using the lookup method to create a DataSource object. If the JDBC driver implements the DataSource as a connection pool, a connection pool becomes available. Request a connection from the connection pool. The connection pool manager checks if a suitable PooledConnection object is available. If a suitable PooledConnection object is available, the connection pool manager returns a handle to the PooledConnection object as a Connection object to the application requesting a connection. If a PooledConnection object is not available the connection pool manager invokes the getPooledConnection() method of the ConnectionPoolDataSource, which is implemented by the JDBC driver. The JDBC driver implementing the ConnectionPoolDataSource creates a PooledConnection object and returns a handle to it. The connection pool manager returns a handle to the PooledConnection object as a Connection object to the application requesting a connection. When an application closes a connection, the connection pool manager deactivates the handle to the PooledConnection object and returns the PooledConnection object to the connection pool. ConnectionPoolDataSource provides some configuration properties to configure a connection pool. The configuration pool properties are not set by the JDBC client, but are implemented or augmented by the connection pool. The properties can be set in a data source configuration. Therefore, it is not for the application itself to change the settings, but for the administrator of the pool, who also happens to be the developer sometimes, to do so. Connection pool properties supported by ConnectionPoolDataSource are discussed in following table: Connection Pool Property Type Description maxStatements int Maximum number of statements the pool should keep open. 0 (zero) indicates that statement caching is not enabled. initialPoolSize int The initial number of connections the pool should have at the time of creation. minPoolSize int The minimum number of connections in the pool. 0 (zero) indicates that connections are created as required. maxPoolSize int The maximum number of connections in the connection pool. 0 indicates that there is no maximum limit. maxIdleTime int Maximum duration (in seconds) a connection can be kept open without being used before the connection is closed. 0 (zero) indicates that there is no limit. propertyCycle int The interval in seconds the pool should wait before implementing the current policy defined by the connection pool properties. maxStatements int The maximum number of statements the pool can keep open. 0 (zero) indicates that statement caching is not enabled.     Setting the Environment Before getting started, we have to install the JDeveloper 10.1.3 IDE and the MySQL 5.0 database. Download JDeveloper from: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/jdev/index.html. Download the MySQL Connector/J 5.1, the MySQL JDBC driver that supports JDBC 4.0 specification. To install JDeveloper extract the JDeveloper ZIP file to a directory. Log in to the MySQL database and set the database to test. Create a database table, Catalog, which we will use in a web application. Having installed the JDeveloper IDE, next we will configure a JDBC connection in the Connections Navigator. Select the Connections tab and right-click on the Database node to select New Database Connection. Click on Next in Create Database Connection Wizard. In the Create Database Connection Type window, specify a Connection Name—MySQLConnection for example—and set Connection Type to Third Party JDBC Driver, because we will be using MySQL database, which is a third-party database for Oracle JDeveloper and click on Next. If a connection is to be configured with Oracle database select Oracle (JDBC) as the Connection Type and click on Next. In the Authentication window specify Username as root (Password is not required to be specified for a root user by default), and click on Next. In the Connection window, we will specify the connection parameters, such as the driver name and connection URL; click on New to specify a Driver Class. In the Register JDBC Driver window, specify Driver Class as com.mysql.jdbc.Driver and click on Browse to select a Library for the Driver Class. In the Select Library window, click on New to create a new library for the MySQL Connector/J 5.1 JAR file. In the Create Library window, specify Library Name as MySQL and click on Add Entry to add a JAR file entry for the MySQL library. In the Select Path Entry window select mysql-connector-java-5.1.3-rcmysql-connector-java-5.1.3-rc-bin.jar and click on Select. In the Create Library window, after a Class Path entry gets added to the MySQL library, click on OK. In the Select Library window, select the MySQL library and click on OK. In the Register JDBC Driver window, the MySQL library gets specified in the Library field and the mysql-connector-java-5.1.3-rcmysql-connector-java-5.1.3-rc-bin.jar gets specified in the Classpath field. Now, click on OK. The Driver Class, Library, and Classpath fields get specified in the Connection window. Specify URL as jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test, and click on Next. In the Test window click on Test Connection to test the connection that we have configured. A connection is established and a success message gets output in the Status text area. Click on Finish in the Test window. A connection configuration, MySQLConnection, gets added to the Connections navigator. The connection parameters are displayed in the structure view. To modify any of the connection settings, double-click on the Connection node. The Edit Database Connection window gets displayed. The connection Username, Password, Driver Class, and URL may be modified in the Edit window. A database connection configured in the Connections navigator has a JNDI name binding in the JNDI naming service provided by OC4J. Using the JNDI name binding, a DataSource object may be created in a J2EE application. To view, or modify the configuration settings of the JDBC connection select Tools | Embedded OC4J Server Preferences in JDeveloper. In the window displayed, select Global | Data Sources node, and to update the data-sources.xml file with the connection defined in the Connections navigator, click on the Refresh Now button. Checkboxes may be selected to Create data-source elements where not defined, and to Update existing data-source elements. The connection pool and data source associated with the connection configured in the Connections navigator get listed. Select the jdev-connection-pool-MySQLConnection node to list the connection pool properties as Property Set A and Property Set B. The tuning properties of the JDBC connection pool may be set in the Connection Pool window. The different tuning attributes are listed in following table:

The Problem We need to design and implement a role-based access control (RBAC) system, demonstrate its use, and ensure that the system can provide: a simple data structure a flexible code to provide a usable RBAC interface efficiency so that RBAC avoids heavy overheads Discussion and Considerations Computer systems have long needed controls on access. Early software commonly fell into the category that became known as access control lists (ACL). But these were typically applied at a fairly low level in systems, and referred to basic computer operations. Further development brought software designed to tackle more general issues, such as control of confidential documents. Much work was done on discretionary access control (DAC), and mandatory access control (MAC). A good deal of academic research has been devoted to the whole question of access controls. The culmination of this work is that the model most widely favored is the role-based access control system, such a mouthful that the acronym RBAC is used hereafter. Now although the academic analysis can be abstruse, we need a practical solution to the problem of managing access to services on a website. Fortunately, rather like the relational database, the concepts of RBAC are simple enough. RBAC involves some basic entities. Unfortunately, terminologies are not always consistent, so let us keep close to the mainstream, and define some that will be used to implement our solution: Subject: A subject is something that is controlled. It could be a whole web page, but might well be something much more specific such as a folder in a file repository system. This example points to the fact that a subject can often be split into two elements, a type, and an identifier. So the folders of a file repository count as a type of subject, and each individual folder has some kind of identifier. Action: An action arises because we typically need to do more than simply allow or deny access to RBAC subjects. In our example, we may place different restrictions on uploading files to a folder and downloading files from the folder. So our actions might therefore include 'upload', and 'download'. Accessor: The simplest example of an accessor is a user. The accessor is someone or something who wants to perform an action. It is unduly restrictive to assume that accessors are always users. We might want to consider other computer systems as accessors, or an accessor might be a particular piece of software. Accessors are like subjects in splitting into two parts. The first part is the kind of accessor, with website users being the most common kind. The second part is an identifier for the specific accessor, which might be a user identifying number. Permission: The combination of a subject and an action is a permission. So, for example, being able to download files from a particular folder in a file repository would be a permission. Assignment: In RBAC there is never a direct link between an accessor and permission to perform an action on a subject. Instead, accessors are allocated one or more roles. The linking of an accessor and role is an assignment. Role: A role is the bearer of permissions and is similar to the notion of a group. It is roles that are granted one or more permissions. It is easy to see that we can control what can be done by allocating roles to users, and then checking to see if any of a user's roles has a particular permission. Moreover, we can generalize this beyond users to other types of accessor as the need arises. The model built so far is known in the academic literature as RBAC0. Adding Hierarchy As RBAC can operate at a much more general level than ACL, it will often happen that one role embraces another. Suppose we think of the example of a hospital, the role of consultant might include the role of doctor. Not everyone who has the role of doctor would have the role of consultant. But all consultants are doctors. At present, Aliro implements hierarchy purely for backwards compatibility with the Mambo, and Joomla! schemes, where there is a strict hierarchy of roles for ACL. The ability to extend hierarchy more generally is feasible, given the Aliro implementation, and may be added at some point. The model with the addition of role hierarchies is known as RBAC1. Adding Constraints In general data processing, situations arise where RBAC is expected to implement constraints on the allocation of roles. A typical example would be that the same person is not permitted to have both purchasing and account manager roles. Restrictions of this kind derive from fairly obvious principles to limit scope for fraud. While constraints can be powerful additions to RBAC, they do not often arise in web applications, so Aliro does not presently provide any capability for constraints. The option is not precluded, since constraints are typically grafted on top of an RBAC system that does not have them. Adding constraints to the basic RBAC0 model creates an RBAC2 model, and if both hierarchy and constraints are provided, the model is called RBAC3. Avoiding Unnecessary Restrictions When it comes to design an implementation, it would be a pity to create obstacles that will be troublesome later. To achieve maximum flexibility, few restrictions are placed on the information that is stored by the RBAC system. Subjects and accessors have both types, and identifiers. The types can be strings, and there is no need for the RBAC system to limit what can be used in this respect. A moderate limitation on length is not unduly restrictive. It is up to the wider CMS to decide, for example, what kinds of subjects are needed. Our example for this article is the file repository, and the subjects it needs are known to the designer of the repository. All requests to the RBAC system from the file repository will take account of this knowledge. Identifiers will often be simple numbers, probably derived from an auto-increment primary key in the database. But it would be unduly restrictive to insist that identifiers must be numbers. It may be that control is needed over subjects that cannot be identified by a number. Maybe the subject can only be identified by a non-numeric key such as a URI, or maybe it needs more than one field to pick it out. For these reasons, it is better to implement the RBAC system with the identifiers as strings, possibly with quite generous length constraints. That way, the designers of software that makes use of the RBAC system have the maximum opportunity to construct identifiers that work in a particular context. Any number of schemes can be imagined that will combine multiple fields into a string; after all, the only thing we will do with the identifier in the RBAC system is to test for equality. Provided identifiers are unique, their precise structure does not matter. The only point to watch is making sure that whatever the original identifier may be, it is consistently converted into a string. Actions can be simple strings, since they are merely arbitrary labels. Again, their meaning is important only within the area that is applying RBAC, so the actual RBAC system does not need to impose any restrictions. Length need not be especially large. Roles are similar, although systems sometimes include a table of roles because extra information is held, such as a description of the role. But since this is not really a requirement of RBAC, the system built here will not demand descriptions for roles, and will permit a role to be any arbitrary string. While descriptions can be useful, it is easy to provide them as an optional extra. Avoiding making them a requirement keeps the system as flexible as possible, and makes it much easier to create roles on the fly, something that will often be needed. Some Special Roles Handling access controls can be made easier and more efficient by inventing some roles that have their own special properties. Aliro uses three of these: visitor, registered, and nobody. Everyone who comes to the site is counted as a visitor, and is therefore implicitly given the role visitor. If a right is granted to this role, it is assumed that it is granted to everybody. After all, it is illogical to give a right to a visitor, and deny it to a user who has logged in, since the user could gain the access right just by logging out. For the sake of efficient implementation of the visitor role, two things are done. One is that nothing is stored to associate particular users with the role, since everyone has it automatically. Second, since most sites offer quite a lot of access to visitors prior to login, the visitor role is given access to anything that has not been connected with some more specific role. This means, again, that nothing needs to be stored in relation to the visitor role. Almost as extensive is the role registered, which is automatically applied to anyone who has logged in, but excludes visitors who have not logged in. Again, nothing is stored to associate users with the role, since it applies to anyone who identifies themselves as a registered user. But in this case, rights can be granted to the registered role. Rather like the visitor role, logic dictates that if access is granted to all registered users, any more specific rights are redundant, and can be ignored. Finally, the role of "nobody" is useful because of the principle that where no specific access has been granted, a resource is available to everyone. Where all access is to be blocked, then access can be granted to "nobody" and no user is permitted to be "nobody". In fact, we can now see that no user can be allocated to any of the special roles since they are always linked to them automatically or not at all. Implementation Efficiency Clearly an RBAC system may have to handle a lot of data. More significantly, it may need to deal with a lot of requests in a short time. A page of output will often consist of multiple elements, any or all of which may involve decisions on access. A two pronged approach can be taken to this problem, using two different kinds of cache. Some RBAC data is general in nature, an obvious example being the role hierarchy. This applies equally to everyone, and is a relatively small amount of data. Information of this kind can be cached in the file system so as to be available to every request. Much RBAC information is linked to the particular user. If all such data were to be stored in the standard cache, it is likely that the cache would grow very large, with much of the data irrelevant to any particular request. A better approach is to store RBAC data that is specific to the user as session data. That way, it will be available for every request by the same user, but will not be cluttered up with data for other users. Since Aliro ensures that there is a live session for every user, including visitors who have not yet logged in, and also preserves the session data at login, this is a feasible approach. Where are the Real Difficulties? Maybe you think we already have enough problems to solve without looking for others? The sad fact is that we have not yet even considered the most difficult one! In my experience, the real difficulties arise in trying to design a user interface to deal with actual control requirements. The example used in this article is relatively simple. Controlling what users can do in a file repository extension does not immediately introduce much complexity. But this apparently simple situation is easily made more complex by the kind of requests that are often made for a more advanced repository. In the simple case, all we have to worry about is that we have control over areas of the repository, indicating who can upload, who can download, and who can edit the files. Those are the requirements that are covered by the examples below. Going beyond that, though, consider a situation that is often discussed as a possible requirement. The repository is extended so that some users have their own area, and can do what they like within it. A simple consequence of this is that we need to be able to grant those users the ability to create new folders in the file repository, as well as to upload and edit files in the existing folders. So far so good! But this scenario also introduces the idea that we may want the user who owns an area of the repository to be able to have control over certain areas, which other users may have access to. Now we need the additional ability to control which users have the right to give access to certain parts of the repository. If we want to go even further, we can raise the issue of whether a user in this position would be able to delegate the granting of access in their area to other users, so as to achieve a complete hierarchy of control. Handling the technical requirements here is not too difficult. What is difficult is designing user interfaces to deal with all the possibilities without creating an explosion of complexity. For an individual case it is feasible to find a solution. An attempt to create a general solution would probably result in a problem that would be extremely hard to solve. Summary In this part of the article we had a look at the highly flexible role-based access control system. We established the principles using standard notions of RBAC. We discussed about the specific details, such as the way accessors and subjects are identified are adapted to the particular situation of a CMS framework. In part 2 of the article, we will look at the database implementation and the code for administering RBAC. We will also consider in outline how questions about access can be answered.

A Quick Overview of Lucene Included with OpenCms is a distribution of the Lucene search engine. Lucene is an open source, high-performance text search engine that is both easy to use and full-featured. Lucene is not a product. It is a Java library providing data indexing, and search and retrieval support. OpenCms integrates with Lucene to provide these features for its VFS content. Though Lucene is simple to use, it is highly flexible and has many options. We will not go into the full details of all the options here, but will provide a basic overview, which will help us in developing our search code. A full understanding of Lucene is not required for completing this article, but interested readers can find more information at the Lucene website: http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene. There are also several excellent books available, which can easily be found with a web search. Search Indexes For any data to be searched, it must first be indexed. Lucene supports both disk and memory based indexes, but OpenCms uses the more suitable disk based indexes. There are three basic concepts to understand regarding Lucene search indexes: Documents, Analyzers, and Fields. Document: A document is a collection of Lucene fields. A search index is made up of documents. Although each document is built from some actual source content, there is no need for the document to exactly resemble it. The fields stored in the document are indexed and stored and used to locate the document. Analyzer: An analyzer is responsible for breaking down source content into words (or terms) for indexing. An analyzer may take a very simple approach of only parsing content at whitespace breaks or a more complex approach by removing common words, identifying email and web addresses, and understanding abbreviations or other languages. Though Lucene provides many optional analyzers, the default one used by OpenCms is usually the best choice. For more advanced search applications, the other analyzers should be looked at in more depth. Field: A field consists of data that can be stored, indexed, or queried. Field values are searched when a query is made to the index. There are two characteristics of a field that determine how it gets treated when indexed: Field Storage: The storage characteristic of a field determines whether or not the field data value gets stored into the index. It is not necessary to store field data if the value is unimportant and is used only to help locate a document. On the other hand, field data should be stored if the value needs to be returned with the search result. Field Indexing: This characteristic determines whether a field will get indexed, and if so, how. There is no need to index fields that will not be used as search terms, and the value should not be indexed. This is useful if we need to return a field value but will never search for the document using that field in a search term. However, for fields that are searchable, the field may be indexed in either a tokenized or an un-tokenized fashion. If a field is tokenized, then it will first be run through an analyzer. Each term generated by the analyzer will be indexed for the field. If it is un-tokenized, then the field's value is indexed, verbatim. In this case, the term must be searched for using an exact match of its value, including the case. The two field types may be combined to form four combinations. While choosing a field type, consideration should thus be given to how the item will need to be located, as well as what data will need to be returned from the index. Lucene also provides the ability to define a boost value for a field. This affects the relevance of the field when it is used in a search. A value other than the default value of 1.0 may be used to raise or lower the relevance. These are the important concepts to be understood while creating a Lucene search index. After an index has been created, documents may be searched through queries. Search Queries Querying Lucene search indexes is supported through a Java API and a search querying language. Search queries are made up of terms and operators. A term can be a simple word such as "hello" or a phrase such as "hello world". Operators are used to form logical expressions with terms, such as AND or NOT. With the Java API, terms can be built and aggregated together along with operators to form a query. When using the query language, a Java class is provided to parse the query and convert it into a format suitable for passing to the engine. In addition to these search features, there are more advanced operations that may be performed such as fuzzy searches, range searches, and proximity searches. All these options and flexibility allow Lucene to be used in an application in many ways. OpenCms does a good job of using these options to provide search capabilities for a wide range of content types. Next, we will look at how OpenCms interfaces with Lucene to provide this support. Configuring OpenCms Search OpenCms maintains search settings in the opencms-search.xml configuration file located in the WEB-INF/config directory. Prior to OpenCms 7, most of the settings in this configuration file needed to be made by hand. With OpenCms 7, the Search Management tool in the Administration View has been improved to cover most of the settings. We will first go over the settings that are controlled through the Search Management view, and will then visit the settings that must still be changed by hand. The first thing we'll do is define our own search index for the blog content. Creating a new search index is simple with the Administration tool. We access it by clicking on the Search Management icon of the Administrative View, and then clicking on the New Index icon: The Name field contains the name of the index file. This name can also be passed to a Java API. If the content differs between the online and offline areas, we can create an index for each one. For now, we will start with the offline index. We'll name it: Blogs – Offline. The other fields are: Rebuild mode: This determines if the index is to be built manually or automatically as content changes. We want automatic updating and will hence choose auto. Locale: We must select a locale for the content. OpenCms will extract the content for the given locale when it builds our index. If we were supporting more than one locale, then it would be a good idea to include the locale in the index name. Project: This selects content from either the Online or Offline project. Field configuration: This selects a field configuration to be used for the index. We do not have our own field configuration yet; so for now press OK to save the index. Next, we will define a field configuration for the blog content.

Integrating Zimbra Collaboration Suite with Microsoft Outlook

Introduction Let's face it, in today's business environment, there is only one email client that truly matters. I am not saying it is the best client, or that it offers more features, and I certainly am not saying it is the most secure. What I am saying is that you would be hard pressed to walk into an organization, of let's say more than 10 desktops, and not see users checking their email with Microsoft Outlook. Zimbra Collaboration Suite offers uncanny support for Outlook including: Native Sync with MAPI Support for both Online and Offline Modes Cached mode operation Support for multiple calendars Here, we will discuss these features and focus on configuring Outlook to work with the Zimbra server. As you will see with a Zimbra back end and an Outlook client, it is transparent to your users whether you are using Microsoft Exchange or Zimbra Collaboration Suite as your back end product. This transparency to users makes the migration from Exchange to Zimbra that much easier in the eyes of your users, especially when it comes to user training. The ability to seamlessly integrate Zimbra and Outlook is one of Zimbra's strongest assets and one of its strongest arguments for making the transition from Exchange to Zimbra. However, if you want to use the full power of Zimbra (not only the fancy look but great features such as the searches), you should use the Web Client. We will take a detailed look at Zimbra integration with Outlook, including: The Zimbra Connector for Outlook (ZCO) A look at Zimbra integration Sharing Outlook folders Outlook uses the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) to allow programs to communicate with messaging systems and stores. MAPI is proprietary to Microsoft and is key to Zimbra being able to synchronize and work with Outlook. Zimbra uses a connector to facilitate this communication—called the Zimbra Connector—for Outlook. The PST Import Wizard One of the beauties of Outlook's integration in Zimbra is that you won't start from scratch: Zimbra gives you tools that are able to import your data (emails, calendars, contacts, etc) either from a concurrent solution's server (Exchange or Domino) or directly from a PST file (the file used by Outlook to store all its data).   We'll have a look at the PST Import Wizard. To download it: Log in to the Administration Console at https://zimbra.emailcs.com:7071/. Click on the Downloads tab on the left of the navigation pane. 3. In the Content Pane, click on the PST Import Wizard to download the executable file. 4. Save the file to the local computer, or a network accessible shared folder. 5. Double click the .exe file to launch the wizard (there's no installation process). 6. Click on Next on the presentation page. 7. In the Hostname field enter: zimbra.emailcs.com. 8. In the Port field you can leave the default (80) and let the Use Secure Connection box unchecked. 9. In the Username field, enter your Zimbra's user (worker@emailcs.com) and in the Password field your Zimbra's password. Click on the Next button. You will now have to select the PST file that you want to import into the Zimbra server. The Zimbra Import Wizard helps you as it opens the default Outlook PST's directory when you click on the Browse button. Once you have selected the PST you want to import and clicked on the Open button, you can now click on the Next button of the initial window. Now, you can choose how your data will be imported: Import Junk-Mail Folder: If you leave this box checked, all your spam will be imported to the server and marked as spam on the server. Import Deleted Items Folder: With this, the deleted mails will be imported on the server. Ignore previously imported items: This option is used when you're importing your data in several attempts. If you leave it checked, the already imported mails won't be imported again. Import items received after: Checking this box and choosing a date in the calendar next to it, allows us to do a partial import based on date. Import messages with some headers but no message body: You should leave this one checked as it imports some badly formatted mails. Convert meeting, organized by me, from my old address to my new address: You need to check this box (and enter your previous email address) if you're getting a new email address on the Zimbra server. If you don't, the meetings will be imported but you won't be the owner. Migrate private appointments: This one is your own choice as Zimbra does not handle (yet) the private items; all the imported appointments will be viewable by anyone you share your calendar with.   Once your choices are made, you can click on the Next button. 14. Click OK in the confirmation window. 15. Next window will show you the import evolution (number of items and percentage). You can stop the import at anytime and start again later. Once the import is finished, a window pops up with a summary of the import session. 16. You can click on the OK button of the summary window then Finish in the last window. The Zimbra Connector for Outlook The Zimbra Connector for Outlook (ZCO) is a downloadable .msi installable file that must be installed on the desktop in order for Outlook and Zimbra to communicate. To download the ZCO to the client: Log in to the Administration Console at https://zimbra.emailcs.com:7071. Click on the Downloads tab on the left of the navigation pane. 3. In the Content Pane, click on the Zimbra Connector for Outlook to download the .msi installable file. Save the file to the local computer, or a network accessible shared folder. Double click the .msi file to start the installation process. The installation wizard will begin and go ahead and accept the License Agreement and accept all of the defaults. Once complete click FINISH. The ZCO creates a brand new profile within Outlook, called Zimbra. If you had previous profile(s) created on your computer, be sure to choose the "Zimbra" one. The ZCO is now installed, and the first time we run Outlook on this client, the connector will prompt us for configuration information. Zimbra currently supports Outlook 2003 only. In the Server Name field, enter: zimbra.emailcs.com. For port leave the default of 80. Email address will be the email address for this user. In our case, we will use the Worker Bee with an email address of worker@emailcs.com. For the password, enter the same password Worker would use to log in to the AJAX web client. Once completed, click OK and Outlook will open Worker's email box. The ZCO will now sync the Global Access List and will get all the emails from the server locally. It means that if you imported lots of item previously, you might need some time to get them back into Outlook from the server. Luckily, then the sync process happens in the background. As you can see in the following screenshot, the folders we created in the Web Client are now configured in Outlook. The first time Outlook is opened, it automatically performs a send/receive with the Zimbra server. After this initial synchronization, there is nothing a user needs to do from then on to initiate synchronization with the server. There is also nothing the user needs to set-up to let Outlook know whether or not the user is Online—connected to the server, or Offline—disconnected from the server. Outlook automatically checks the status and acts accordingly. Therefore, a user need not be connected to the server to work with email that has already been received, check the address book, or work with the Calendar. All changes that the user makes in Offline mode, will synchronize with the server the next time the server is connected and Outlook is online. At this time, we should take a quick look around Outlook and see how integrated Zimbra really is with Outlook. A Look at Zimbra Integration The integration of Zimbra is more than just the ability to send and receive email. Outlook is now acting as the front end to create contacts, appointments, and tasks that will be stored on the server. Let's take a moment to look at each one individually. Contacts The easiest way to see the integration of contacts between Outlook and Zimbra is to compose a new mail message, and instead of typing in an email address, click on the TO: button and select Global Address List from the Address Book drop-down menu. As you can see, this feature looks exactly the same whether you are using Exchange or Zimbra as your back end collaboration server. Users are familiar with this look and feel, and the ability to select users that are within the organization's Global Address List. This list comes directly from the Zimbra server and is maintained there as well. The user also has the option to select the own personal contact list. This list could be created and maintained either via the web client, through Outlook directly, or both as they will synchronize together. Appointments In most work organizations, the ability to create appointments, invite people to attend, and check invitees schedule is a key function of Exchange and Outlook. Luckily for us, the same functionality could be used with Zimbra and Outlook. As seen in the following figure, the process for creating an appointment is exactly the same. In the Calendar application, click New --> Appointment. Click on the Invite Attendees button. Click the To button and select the Global Address List from the drop-down menu. Select the CEO from the address list and click OK. Click on the Scheduling tab.   The Calendar is synced with the Zimbra server and is able to check the availability of the users within the organization, a key feature of any collaboration suite. Once you have found a schedule when all the attendees are free, go back to the Appointment tab, type in a Subject for your appointment then click on the Send button. The last feature we will look at is Sharing Outlook folders. Sharing Outlook Folders Users have the option to share any Outlook folder with users in the Global Address List. Essentially, this is the same ability we covered in an earlier chapter with the Web Client for the Contacts or Calendar. However, here the process is different. Users could be delegated different levels of access to Outlook folders. These levels include: Read View items in folder only Edit Edit any contents in the folder Create Create/add items to the folder Delete Delete/modify items in the folder Act on workflow Respond to meeting and task requests Administer Folder Modify the permissions on the folder There are also predefined roles that users could assign to other users in the Global Address List including: Administrator Has all rights to the folder listed above Delegate Has access to all rights except for Administer folder Editor Access to Read, Edit, Create and Delete Author Access to Read and Create Reviewer Read only To assign roles and rights to the folder: 1. Right click the folder and click Properties. 2. Click on the Sharing tab. 3. Click Add and select CEO from the Global Address List. 4. With CEO highlighted, select Administrator from the Permission Level drop-down-box. 5. With Administrator selected, you should be able to see all of the Permissions selected. 6. Change the Permission Level to Reviewer and you will see that only Read items, is selected. 7. Go ahead and play with the various levels so you can get a feel for the different permissions associated with the various levels. 8. Once complete, click OK. An email will be sent to the CEO informing him that he now has Administrator access to the Inbox of the Worker Bee. In order for the CEO to work with the new Shared Folder (the Worker's Inbox in this case), the CEO would simply: 1. Click on File --> Open --> Other User's Mailbox in the Outlook Menu bar. 2. Select Worker from the Global Address List. 3. Once the folder is added to Outlook, click on the Send/Receive button to synchronize the folder. Summary The goal of this article was to take a brief look at using the Microsoft Outlook client as a front end to the Zimbra Collaboration Suite. In my experience, users do not like change and they tend to be comfortable with applications they are familiar with. One of the most common objections to changing email systems is that users rely so heavily on their email and contacts that they do not want to have to learn a whole new system to access them. Hopefully, if I have done my job, you could now see how users need not be afraid of moving to a Zimbra system, because in the end, their everyday life and functionality is not going to change much. They could still use the tool that they are most familiar with, but still have the added benefit of using the AJAX Web Client when they are on the road or away from their desks.
