Understanding services and microservices

Because of the drawbacks of monolithic architectures, other approaches have emerged. A common idea is to split your solution into multiple services that communicate with each other. You can then split the development between different teams, each taking care of a separate service. The boundaries of each team's work are clear, unlike in the monolithic architecture style.

Service-oriented architecture

A service-oriented architecture, or SOA for short, means that the business functions are modularized and presented as separate services for the consumer applications to use. Each service should have a self-describing interface and hide any implementation details, such as the internal architecture, technologies, or the programming language used. This allows for multiple teams to develop the services however they like, meaning that under the hood, each can use what suits their needs best.
