ASP.NET Core 5 and Angular

Looking Around

Now that our project has been created, it's time to take a quick look around and try to understand some of the hard work that the .NET and Angular SPA template has done to make it work.

...Hey, wait a minute! Shouldn't we skip all these setup technicalities and just jump into coding?

As a matter of fact, yes, we'll definitely be doing that in a little while. However, before doing that, it's wise to highlight a couple of aspects of the code that have been put in place already so that we'll know how to move effectively within our project in advance: where to find the server-side and client-side code, where to put new content, how to change our initialization parameters, and so on. It will also be a good chance to review our basic knowledge of the Visual Studio environment and the packages we will need.

That's precisely what we're going to do in this chapter. More precisely, the following are the main topics we're going to cover:

  • Solution overview: A high-level summary of what we'll be dealing with
  • The ASP.NET back-end: Razor Pages, controllers, configuration files, and so on
  • The Angular front-end: The workspace, the ClientApp folder, the Angular initialization cycle, and so on
  • Creating a new app with the Angular CLI: Installation, creation, and testing
  • Getting to work: Caching concepts, removing some .NET controllers and Angular components that we no longer require, and so on

IMPORTANT! The sample code we're reviewing here is the code that comes with the default Angular SPA Visual Studio template shipped by .NET 5 SDK at the time of writing—the one created with the dotnet new angular command. In the (likely) event that this sample code is updated in future releases, ensure you get the former source code from the web using this book's official GitHub repository and use it to replace the contents of your project folder.

Caution: failing to do this could result in you working with different sample code from the code featured in this book.

Technical requirements

In this chapter, all of the previous technical requirements listed in Chapter 1, Getting Ready, will apply, with no additional resources, libraries, or packages.

The code files for this chapter can be found here: https://github.com/PacktPublishing/ASP.NET-Core-5-and-Angular/tree/main/Chapter_02/

Key benefits

  • Updated with the latest features and additions in ASP.NET Core 5 and Angular 11
  • Design, build, and deploy a Single Page Application or Progressive Web App
  • Adopt a full stack approach to handle data management, Web APIs, application design, testing, SEO, security, and deployment

Description

Learning full-stack development calls for knowledge of both front-end and back-end web development. ASP.NET Core 5 and Angular, Fourth Edition will enhance your ability to create, debug, and deploy efficient web applications using ASP.NET Core and Angular. This revised edition includes coverage of the Angular routing module, expanded discussion on the Angular CLI, and detailed instructions for deploying apps on Azure, as well as both Windows and Linux. Taking care to explain and challenge design choices made throughout the text, Valerio teaches you how to build a data model with Entity Framework Core, alongside utilizing the Entity Core Fluent API and EntityTypeConfiguration class. You’ll learn how to fetch and display data and handle user input with Angular reactive forms and front-end and back-end validators for maximum effect. Later, you will perform advanced debugging and explore the unit testing features provided by xUnit.net (.NET 5) and Jasmine, as well as Karma for Angular. After adding authentication and authorization to your apps, you will explore progressive web applications (PWAs), learning about their technical requirements, testing, and converting SWAs to PWAs. By the end of this book, you will understand how to tie together the front end and back end to build and deploy secure and robust web applications.

Who is this book for?

This book is for experienced ASP.NET developers who already possess some familiarity with ASP.NET Core and Angular and are looking to learn how to use them effectively together. The fully documented code samples (also available on GitHub) and the step-by-step implementation tutorials make this book easy to follow.

What you will learn

  • Implement a web API interface with ASP.NET Core and consume it with Angular using RxJS observables
  • Set up an SQL database server using a local instance or a cloud data store
  • Perform C# and TypeScript debugging using Visual Studio 2019
  • Create TDD and BDD unit tests using xUnit, Jasmine, and Karma
  • Perform DBMS structured logging using third-party providers such as SeriLog
  • Deploy web apps to Windows and Linux web servers, or Azure App Service, using IIS, Kestrel, and nginx

Overall, I enjoyed the outline and flow of this book. The author does an excellent job explaining things and makes no assumptions that the reader "knows it." As a result, an experienced reader might skip parts of the content and still get what the author is teaching.I like how this book breaks down a "real world" application into pieces (chapters). The author starts by introducing the languages, technologies, and tools. After the introduction, you begin to build an application. The author presents how to use ASP.NET Core as the "back-end," then transitions to using Angular for the "front-end." From there on out, the application is built capability by capability. The author covers building out the database, including the server and building out the API to retrieve data from the database, and then consuming that data via the Angular client. The author then discusses editing, updating, paging, sorting, and filtering the data—Lots of capabilities that we find in everyday applications. For the following few chapters, the author makes improvements to the code base to make it more maintainable and testable. Then the author talks about authentication and authorization. The book is wrapped up by showing how to deploy your application to Windows, Linux, or Azure App Service.Overall, it is an excellent introduction to ASP.NET 5 Core and Angular. As a bonus, in every chapter, the author has a recommended reading section and reference section for more details. This book would be a terrific addition to a web developer who wants to get into ASP.NET and Angular.

Very good book. I am not very experienced with Angular and Asp.net, I just started few months ago, but the book explains a lot of things and makes the programming more fun and easy. Very handy book. Can be used as a references book as well.
