Hello, and welcome to the Salesforce Lightning Web Components Cookbook! If you are reading this book, you are likely a Salesforce professional who is looking to increase their knowledge of frontend development in Salesforce. Whether you are a seasoned architect or developer, an admineloper looking to grow their skills, or an object-oriented programming (OOP) developer who is dipping their toes into the wild world of Salesforce, this book aims to introduce patterns of development that allow for secure and scalable code while providing a cohesive user experience.

If you are reading this chapter, you are likely setting up your machine for Salesforce development, possibly for the first time! Unlike Apex, Aura, and Visualforce development, which can all be completed within the Salesforce Developer Console, Lightning Web Components require an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The most...

Technical requirements

To complete the recipes in this book in Visual Studio Code (VSCode), you must have admin access to a computer with a 1.6 GHz or faster processor and 1 GB of RAM, with 500 MB of download space available. VSCode is supported on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, as well as the latest release of MacOS (Sequoia) or the two previous versions (Sonoma or Ventura). These operating system requirements are accurate as of the writing of this book. To download VSCode, visit https://code.visualstudio.com/download.

Once you have VSCode installed, your window will look similar to the following:

Figure 1.1: A screenshot of the VSCode window on Mac, showing the locations of the File Explorer, File Viewer, Source Control icon, Extensions icon, and the terminal when open

In addition to VSCode, you will need to download and install the most recent, stable Java Development Kit (JDK), which can be downloaded directly from Oracle at https...

Forking the repository

The version control system that this cookbook utilizes is Git, which is an open-source tool that allows you to track changes in your code. GitHub is a complementary Software as a Service (SaaS) platform that hosts Git repositories and provides additional features. A fork of a Git repository grants access to a copy of an original upstream repository so that changes can be made without affecting the upstream. For the purposes of building out the projects covered in this Cookbook, we are going to fork the Cookbook repository so that we can make our own changes in a separate developer org.

How to do it

We are going to start by making a copy of the Cookbook repository that we can play with. In order to do so, we must set up a GitHub account.

  1. Navigate to https://github.com and sign up for a free account if you don't have one already. Once you have an account, or if you have an account already, sign in and...

Setting up your IDE

To enable Salesforce Lightning Web Component (LWC) development, first, we must install an IDE on our local machine. This can be a tricky task! This chapter aims to serve as a reference for a process that most developers only complete when they get a new computer. This Cookbook provides a step-by-step guide for two major operating systems, Windows and Mac, as well as Salesforce Code Builder, which is generally available in many Salesforce editions as of the Winter '23 release.

Setting up VSCode on Windows

If you are one of the nearly two-thirds of developers who utilize Windows, you'll need to start by selecting the appropriate Windows download from https://code.visualstudio.com/download. From there, it can get a little tricky, so I have done my best to compile the steps.

How to do it

  1. Download the appropriate installer to your preferred directory from https://code.visualstudio...

Retrieving and deploying metadata from Salesforce

Now that we have our IDE set up with the appropriate settings and extensions, whether we are utilizing VSCode or Code Builder, we're going to want to know how to retrieve and deploy metadata. Metadata, or data about data, is the underlying code that tells our Salesforce org what to do. The main metadata types that we will be concerned with in this cookbook are Apex Classes, LWCs, Aura Components, and Visualforce Pages.

Note

The Salesforce Extension Pack can occasionally take some time to load upon opening VSCode. This can be a source of frustration at the start of the day, as the extensions are required to authorize an org, create new metadata types, or retrieve and deploy metadata. To check to see if your extension pack is loading successfully, press CTRL + SHIFT + P (CMD + SHIFT + P on Mac) and search for Developer: Show Running Extensions. This tool will let you view which extensions are still...

Linting for Salesforce

Knowing the basics of VSCode, we are ready to start developing. If, while you are developing, you would like to check the code you are writing against a set of standards or for errors, linting may be a good option for you. Linting allows programmers to check their written code for style issues and programmatic errors utilizing static code analysis. Salesforce has its own linting tool, ESLint.

Note

If you are working on a company-issued computer, you may have different linting requirements than are listed in this chapter.

How to do it

To utilize Salesforce's linting tool, ESLint, you must have the latest stable release of Node.js, which is a JavaScript runtime environment (JRE) where a JavaScript program can be executed, installed on your local machine. Node.js can be installed utilizing the package manager and instructions at https://nodejs.org/en/download/package-manager.

Once Node...

Setting up the Salesforce Lightning Web Components Cookbook org

Now that we have forked our repository metadata and deployed it to our Developer Edition org, let's create some test data.

Imagine you are a Salesforce developer for an art broker which has been tasked with transporting artworks (Assets) between different museums (Accounts). Each artwork has a requirement to document the history of its residencies (Asset Residencies) that are created by a record-triggered flow upon insertion or update of an Asset record. Each artwork also carries documentation for the artist that primarily completed the work (Constituents) and the classification of the artwork (Tags). A general Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) for our purposes can be seen below:

Figure 1.7: An Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) showing the general relationships that will be utilized for the use case presented in this Cookbook

Your job as the developer is to...

Building your first LWC

Once we have our IDE set up and configured for development, and now that we understand how to retrieve and deploy metadata, we are ready to develop our own metadata to deploy!

How to do it

  1. Navigate to your IDE and right-click on the lwc folder in the force-app/chapter01/default path. If you have forked the repository for this book, there will be an lwc folder under each of the chapters, for example, the lwc folder for Chapter 1, Getting Ready for Lightning Web Component Development, will be under the force-app/chapter01/default path.
  2. From the dropdown menu that appears after right clicking force-app/chapter01/default/lwc, select SFDX: Create Lightning Web Component.
  3. When your Salesforce Extensions Pack loads, enter a name for your new LWC, such as yourFirstLWC. For example, I will be using evelynsFirstLWC for mine. Hit Enter, and either choose a custom directory, such as force-app/chapter01...

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
