Did you think the previous chapter was finished? Nope, I just ran out of room in that chapter, so here we go again. RMAN can be used as part of a manual migration strategy, either by restoring a copy of an older database to a new server or using the transportable tablespace method of upgrading. At the end of this section, some tips on using RMAN catalog repository with multiple Oracle Database versions are also included.

Using RMAN as part of a manual upgrade process

RMAN is configured so that a higher release is able to restore a lower release (upgrade) or vice versa (downgrade). Think of the following exercise in two parts—using RMAN to restore and recover a database, and then upgrading the database manually to 11g. This method will work for a database either in a noarchivelog mode with a consistent RMAN backup, or an archivelog mode with an inconsistent RMAN backup.
