Planning for a database creation


Although fewer in number than those needed for an installation, there are certain system prerequisites that should be considered before creating a database. These generally center on the need for adequate amounts of memory and disk.

Understanding the memory requirements of a database

System RAM is an extremely important consideration in running an Oracle database. The Oracle Database architecture is highly dependent on the use of memory caches to perform basic operations. The concept of a memory cache is one of the most fundamental principles in computer science. Basically, we make use of volatile memory such as system RAM because its I/O access speeds, for both reading and writing, are considerably higher than non-volatile memory, such as hard disk. Simply put, we might say that in Oracle, storage occurs on disk, while work occurs in RAM.
