Traditional Linux/Unix server application deployment uses an init script to manage background processes. They are to start every time the system boots, and cleanly shut down when the system is halted. The name "init script" comes from the name of the first process launched in the system, whose traditional name is /etc/init. The init scripts are usually stored in /etc/init.d, and are typically simple shell scripts.
