Introduction


Content type is defined as a reusable collection of metadata, a workflow, and other settings for a category of items which encapsulate data requirements and enable standardization.

In SharePoint, content is stored in some type of list in the site. Content can be pictures, documents, contacts, tasks, or custom items that you store in a list. You can specify in the SharePoint list what kind of content that it can store. Out of the box, SharePoint provides templates that you can use to create lists or libraries that store specific contents like documents or pictures or contacts. This is achieved through content types. For example, a document library is intended for storing documents like word, PDF or excel documents where as a contacts list stores contacts. SharePoint makes this distinction by having different content types associated with these lists.
