SMA – overview and architecture


SMA, a part of the system center product family, adds automation capabilities to the Windows Azure Pack cloud. SMA enables a cloud provider to automate provisioning, monitoring, and managing all resources in a WAP cloud.

Let's take an example. In a large-scale cloud provider scenario, tenants create and delete virtual machines in real time on a large scale, that is, hundreds of operations everyday. This cloud provider provides multiple capabilities and features on VMs hosted on the cloud as a value added to it; such capabilities include the following:

  • Backup and disaster recovery

  • Real-time monitoring

  • Antivirus and anti-malware protection

  • Automatic point in time state snapshots

Each VM provisioned by tenants needs to be configured in respective tools to enable the previous capabilities. And after each deletion of VMs by tenants, their respective configuration needs to be removed from backup, monitoring, and so on. Assume achieving this in a cloud having hundreds...
