AngularJS Deployment Essentials

Chapter 2. Deploying to Apache

The Apache HTTP server is without a doubt the most common destination for websites and applications being deployed into production. Because of this, most developers have some level of comfort with deploying to a remote Apache server, but will likely have limited experience in deploying an Angular application to this server environment. Take a look at the graph in the following figure to see how Apache stacks up when compared to other top servers:

In this chapter, we will cover the following points:

  • Things needed to properly host an Angular app on an Apache server
  • To deploy to a remote Apache server using both the FTP CLI and clients
  • To automate deployment with GitHub Service Hooks and SSH
  • To optimize Apache's configuration to support the use of Google's PageSpeed Service and Angular's HTML5Mode
  • To avoid some gotchas and pitfalls along the way

From local to remote

Prior to automating segments of your workflow, it is valuable to traverse the flow manually to ensure that all phases are accounted for, and to minimize variables in the process. Most developers have likely deployed source code to either local or remote Apache servers alike, and because of that I will attempt to focus my efforts on the gotchas and nuances that apply to applications written in Angular.

Up until this point, we have conducted all local development on a Node.js server, provided by running the grunt server command from within our application's root directory. To clarify any possible confusion caused by this divergence, Angular is designed to be server agnostic, and therefore can be served from almost any backend stack you like, including Apache. Because of Angular's server agnostic design, it is fully possible to develop Angular applications locally served from Apache. I encourage a local Node.js server over Apache, because the developer experience...

Automating deployment with GitHub and SSH

GitHub's features go well beyond distributed version control in the cloud, which is amazing in itself. In the settings for each repository hosted on GitHub, there is a section entitled "Service Hooks". This provides an interface to automate a reaction every time a specified action takes place. For instance, you can effectively tell GitHub whenever I push to my remote master repository (the action) to do "something" (the reaction). In our case, that "something" will be to run a specific .PHP file on your remote Apache server that initiates a git pull from the same repository. The developer and blogger, Jeffrey Way, first documented this technique in an article and video he published (which you can access at http://goo.gl/qgFyg4) on the tutorial site tutsplus.com (which was formerly nettuts.com). We will explore configuring your remote Git repository for deployment whenever you complete a push to the remote master...

Troubleshooting deployment issues

It is nearly inevitable that there will someday be an issue within your deployment workflow. These issues can range from something as simple as forgetting to include a file in your put, or as complex as overriding your environmental configuration. Whatever the issue may be, it is best to have a contingency plan for this rainy day. Tools are ever your friends, troubleshooting included. The cornerstone of any deployment issue is a bulletproof diff tool. Diff tools allow you to compare the contents of two files or folders. Take, for example, you mistakenly published an old version of your application. You could use a diff tool to compare your local development source code with your remote production source code to tell you which files are out of place. Most diff tools sport similar interfaces that allow you to select two folders or two files to compare against each other. Diff tools are like using a magnet to find a needle in a haystack; they will narrow the...

Configuring Apache for Angular

Angular applications can run well when served by Apache under its default configuration, but there is undoubtedly room for improvements, both Angular specific and otherwise. We will explore adding a third-party module to extend Apache's default global functionality, while adding some rewrite rules to support the use of the HTML5 History API within your Angular application.

Note

Note that Apache can be configured in many varying ways to support all types of infrastructures and applications. Before modifying any of Apache's configurations within a production environment, please consult with your network or server administrators. If you are a full-stack developer, then you should be good to go!

Google's PageSpeed Service for Apache

Optimizing a website or application is a science unto its own and people spend the majority of their careers striving to shave off milliseconds or clean up jank (animation stutters). There are well-documented best practices...

Summary

Deploying Angular applications to Apache can be as simple or complicated as you prefer. In its simplest form, you can use a client that augments the process for you, resulting in a drag-and-drop interface. If speed is your primary concern (putting the "hot" in hot-fix), then the FTP command-line interface will likely be your weapon of choice. And if you don't mind some level of configuration, and you fancy automation, then auto-magically deploying your code from GitHub on each push is your calling. However you've decided to move your files from A to B, Apache is undoubtedly an environment that any Angular application can be proud to call home.

Coming up next, we will explore the Node.js server environment provided by the popular platform service provider, Heroku. Prepare to dive deep into the depth of Node.js with the goal of optimizing it to best serve your Angular application, using the tools provided by Heroku.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It provides some useful information and an insight on deploying AngularJS applications, but is very strongly focused on a specific subset of tools. That said, you can abstract some of the concepts out to more general environments, which is where I think the author was heading with his examples. It is a tough problem to describe - you will never be able to satisfy everyones setup or deployment requirements. The majority of the content is around setting the tools up rather than best practises, caveats and pitfalls of deployment. I read through each chapter as a traditional book and it felt like a substantial portion of each chapter could be skimmed, if all you were interested in was deployment methodologies. My recommendation would be to cherry pick chapters of the book that are applicable to your environment or the problem you are trying to solve, rather than reading through the book chapter by chapter.
