Practical – smart garden system with open source IoT

By the end of this section, you will have designed and implemented a smart plant monitoring and care system. The project will explore IoT integration, sensor data processing, and automated plant care actions.

Required tools and technologies

The following are the hardware and software that will be required for this practical exercise:

  • ESP32S NodeMCU
  • Four-port 3.3V relay module
  • One-port 3.3V relay module
  • Four-unit 12V solenoid water valve
  • Four-unit capacitive soil moisture sensor
  • 12V mini water pump with 5 mm inlet/outlet hose connector
  • SH1106 1.3” I2C OLED display
  • Silicon hose: 7 mm outer diameter, 5 mm inner diameter
  • A 12V 2A DC power supply, or you can use a 12V car/motorcycle battery
  • A 5V micro USB power supply for ESP32
  • Breadboard, jumper wires, and other necessary accessories

With that, we can now start setting up the hardware.
