Mohamed Waly has shown an interest in IT since he was a student. The journey began in 2011 when he joined the college of Computer Science, when he started learning how to work with Windows Server 2008, and was the youngest amongst his colleagues at the college to achieve certification. In 2012 he joined one of the greatest and most well-known student programs all over the world, the Microsoft Student Partner program. During the time he spent on the program, he took many communication and presentation skills sessions that helped him to deliver too many sessions since his second year at the college and the journey continues till now. In the meantime, Waly learned some other topics such as Exchange Server System Center, VMware vSphere, and Microsoft Azure, formerly known as Windows Azure. He has worked in multiple communities, such as the Azure Community in Egypt, and the Open Source on Azure. Also, he served multiple internships during his time in the university to improve his experience. That's why, in July 2014, Microsoft recognized Mohamed Waly as the youngest MVP in the world. After finishing college, he worked for two of the biggest Microsoft Partners in Egypt—Global Knowledge and Blue Cloud Technologies—as a System Engineer and an Associate Infrastructure Consultant, respectively, serving Microsoft Customers in the EMEA region by designing and implementing virtualization and Cloud solutions.

Monitoring and Automating Azure Services Using OMS

In this chapter, you will be introduced to Operations Management Suite (OMS) and its components. Then, we will go through Azure Log Analytics and how to work with it. Also, you will be introduced to Azure Automation and how to get started with it.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Introduction to OMS
  • Introduction to Azure Log Analytics
  • Onboarding OMS agents
  • Azure Automation

Introduction to OMS

OMS is a cloud-based IT management solution that can be used to manage, monitor, protect, and automate your infrastructure either on the cloud or on-premises. It is a complementary solution for system center and, with both of them, you can have a fully integrated management solution, giving you the best hybrid experience ever.

OMS is a management as a service solution offered as one of Microsoft's cloud solutions to provide the customers with the following features:

  • Log Analytics: This is the monitoring solution that collects, corresponds with, and searches the logs and acts accordingly, giving real-time operational insights and data analytics via visualized dashboards about what is monitored and its current status.
  • Automation: Using Hybrid Runbook Worker, you can automate repetitive tasks , whether they be on-premises or cloud, either by PowerShell scripts...

Introduction to Azure Log Analytics

Monitoring has always been a cornerstone for every efficient and productive IT environment, as you will be able to get insights about what is going on in your environment and act accordingly.

Azure Log Analytics leverages the power of the cloud and gives you the best experience of running a monitoring solution on the cloud. You will not have to care about the underlying infrastructure on which the monitoring solution is running. It also provides you with a proper structure for the information it collects, where you can see visuals and meaningful insights for what you want to monitor.

Azure Log Analytics deployment models

Azure Log Analytics can be deployed in three models:

  • Directly installed...

Onboarding OMS agents

In this section, you will learn how to create an OMS workspace and how to onboard agents to the Azure Log Analytics workspace

Creating the workspace

First off, you have to create the workspace on which we will onboard the agents. To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Azure portal and search for Log Analytics:
  1. A new blade will be opened, where you can view the existing workspaces (if any). To create a workspace, click on Add:
  1. A new blade will be opened, where you can specify the following:
    • Create New or Link Existing: Select whether you want to create a new link or link to an existing one.
    • Subscription: Select the subscription that will be charged for this service.
    • Resource...

Azure Automation

Re-implementing tasks from time to time can be tedious and time wasting. With Azure Automation, you can overcome this issue by automating all the manual, repetitive, and long-running processes.

Azure Automation is a part of OMS solutions. It gives you the ability to automate tasks across Azure Cloud, on-premises, and even other cloud platforms.

Benefits of Azure Automation

Azure Automation has many benefits. Here are some of them:

  • Time saving: You will save a lot of time when using automation by moving away from routine and error-prone manual tasks.
  • Low costs: The service usage itself does not cost too much. You can save many operational costs by automating your manual tasks and even automating the cleanup...

Summary

So far, you have been introduced to OMS and two of its major components (Log Analytics and Automation). This chapter was meant to give you a brief introduction and start your journey of working with OMS.

In the next and final chapter, I'll continue covering some of OMS components (Azure Recovery Services), which are designed for business continuity and disaster recovery.

Questions

  1. Which of the following is not one of the major OMS solutions?
    • Azure backup
    • Log Analytics
    • Azure Application Gateway
    • Azure Site Recovery
  2. You can monitor SCOM agents on OMS:
    • True
    • False
  3. To be able to view the Azure Automation folder in the installation path of OMS agent, you need to:
    • Add the Automation Hybrid Worker solution to OMS Workspace
    • Create an automation account
    • Add runbooks from the gallery
