Common Issues to Avoid in the Development Phase

In the previous two chapters, you covered the activities in the development phase of your Salesforce project: detailing the scope of your release, creating the solution design, establishing your team’s development process, completing the build and testing of your release, and creating your data migration plan.

In this chapter, we will discuss common issues often faced in the development phase of a Salesforce project. We will also cover strategies to prevent or mitigate such issues from arising altogether.

In Chapter 5, Common Issues to Avoid in the Pre-Development Phase, you were introduced to root cause analysis (RCA), and we’ll continue using that method to dissect the common issues faced in the development phase. At the end of this chapter, you will be presented with a set of checklists to evaluate the state of your Salesforce project as you wrap up the development phase.

This chapter will cover the following...

Common issues in the development phase and their root causes

Let’s get started by looking at some of the issues most commonly faced in the development phase—illustrated with a fishbone diagram:

Next, we’ll discuss the possible root causes and strategies for the mitigation and prevention of each of the common issues.

Not being able to follow your tentative development plan

In Table 8.1, you’ll find possible root causes for why you may not be able to follow the tentative development plan for your Salesforce project, along with strategies for mitigation if you are already facing that issue:

Evaluating the state of your Salesforce project

We have covered a lot of topics and activities in the development phase of a Salesforce project. If your project gets stuck, or you are not pleased with the progress, the following subsection will support you in evaluating the state of your Salesforce project. For each item you cannot check, go back to the corresponding chapters and complete the activities to proceed with your Salesforce project.

Checklist for your Salesforce project in the development phase

In the development phase, you should have gone through the following actions. When detailing the scope of your release, you should:

  • Make sure the required internal resources are allocated to your Salesforce project
  • Involve end users in the co-creation of business processes to be supported by your Salesforce solution
  • Make sure the PO for your Salesforce project is suitably qualified and empowered to detail user stories and provide acceptance criteria on behalf...

Summary

In this chapter, you have become familiar with the common issues often faced in the development phase and learned how to mitigate or prevent them from arising. You have also assessed the state of your Salesforce project in the development phase by going through checklists.

With your Salesforce project in great shape, you are ready to move on to the next step in your Salesforce journey, the roll-out phase, starting with Chapter 9, Deploying Your Release and Migrating Data to Production.
