JMeter Overview

Apache JMeter is a soft ware that allows you to perform load tests on various protocols and technologies.

It was developed by the Apache Software Foundation (https://apache.org/).

JMeter is an application written in Java and offers an integrated development environment (IDE) for load test development.

This IDE has multiple looks and feels (LAFs), the default one shown here is based on Darcula LAF. Later in this book, we'll use the cross-platform LAF for presentation purposes because it is white.

Types of Load Tests Supported

JMeter is a generic test tool that has great flexibility and adaptability to meet multiple scenario requirements.

Specifically, here are some examples of possible load tests:

Check the response times of a web application, according to the number of virtual users

Test differences in the behavior of the same application on two (or more) different runtime environments (for example, clustered environment versus non-clustered environment, or configuration 1 versus configuration 2)

Test the limits of an application (the number of users the application can accommodate before it crashes)

Functionally test an application automatically (with non-regression tests, functional validity tests, and so on), often coupled with a continuous integration tool

Reproduce a load-related production bug in a QA environment

Automate load testing in the continuous integration (CI) process

Test a database, a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) (or Active...

JMeter natively manages the following protocols:

Reporting

JMeter allows you to analyze the results of a test at the following times:

At the end of the test using the OOTB HTML report, which can be generated automatically

In real time, using the Backend Listener element combined with a time series database such as InfluxDB and Grafana as a dashboard creation tool

At the end of the test using the XML or CSV file created by JMeter and with the help of any visualization tool supporting this file format, such as Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, QlikView, Jupyter, Apache Zeppelin, and so on

At the end of the test within continuous integration solutions such as Jenkins using Performance Plugin

Bruno Demion (Milamber)

Bruno Demion, better known as Milamber, is a French computer scientist. Since December 2003, he has been working with JMeter to perform load tests in various missions and training courses. He contributes to the JMeter project, in particular on the translation into French of the graphical interface, corrections of anomalies as well as some behaviors (proxy HTTPS, new results tree, icon bar, and so on). He is currently a committer, PMC member and the PMC Chair of the Apache JMeter project within the Apache Software Foundation.
