Summary

It is very common for spatial applications to try to do many of the data management tasks that can be done in the database more efficiently. In this chapter, we have discussed many common database features useful for the spatial applications. We have shown examples of when these features can be useful for spatial applications along with several code examples. The data consistency check is a common task that is traditionally done in a GIS, but these can be done at the database using triggers as shown in this chapter. We learned how to use materialized views to reduce the cost associated with the repeated query operations. We explained the database replay used to replay the workload captured on a production system on other systems. The versioning of spatial objects is another common operation that is usually managed by a GIS.
