Your Distributed Technology Operating Model in Action

In the previous chapter, we learned how to create our best-fit distributed cloud and edge operating model. We followed six main steps to determine our operating model dimensions for each operating model stream and, subsequently, our complete technology operating model. We placed our stakeholders into stream teams and grouped dimensions under each stream, which the stream teams own, and subsequently built out an operating model. We discussed how to create stakeholder mappings and how to use them to run workshops to build the operating model. We then elaborated on each dimension. In this chapter, we will put the operating model concept to use. By the end of this chapter, we will have learned how to do the following:

  • Build a distributed cloud and edge technology operating model while following the process defined in Chapter 5, for an insurance organization based on a simulated case study

Simulated case study

A fictitious automobile insurance company expands globally, acquires a home insurance company, adopts modern cloud and edge application development and delivery practices, and attempts to transform into a digital business.

Case study overview

Bison Insurance is a well-established automobile insurance company in North America with a long history of providing high-quality products and services to its customers. Bison Insurance started as an automobile insurance company in 1934 in Chicago, covering Illinois and Milwaukee. By 1948, they were firmly established as the number one automobile insurance company in these two states. They had over 300 physical stores and built a strong freelancer network to take their services to the rural markets. By 1950, they enjoyed remarkable customer loyalty with a 97.8% renewal rate while continuing to acquire new customers at a rapid rate. As the economy grew from strength to strength post-war, Bison Insurance grew faster and...

Summary

In this chapter, we introduced a fictitious case study of an insurance company called Bison and looked at its growth, acquisitions, competitive threats, global expansion plans, and digital transformation initiative. We showed how Bison Insurance created a new program called Resurgence program and built a core team to lead this initiative.

We also showed how Bison Insurance built their distributed cloud and edge operating model while following the template and open principles that were explained in Chapter 5, Building Your Distributed Technology Operating Model.

The Bison Insurance operating model documentation is available in this book’s GitHub repository for reference: https://github.com/PacktPublishing/Technology-Operating-Models-for-Cloud-and-Edge.

In the next chapter, we will learn how enterprise-grade open source technologies were leveraged to build the Resurgence platform, a distributed cloud and edge platform based on their distributed cloud and edge...
