DynamoDB Applied Design Patterns

Chapter 2. DynamoDB Interfaces

There are a number of interfaces available to make user interaction easy and effective. There are four interfaces that are commonly used to interact with DynamoDB:

  • The management console
  • The Eclipse plugin
  • The command-line interface
  • The REST API

As a part of our discussion in this chapter, we will learn about the first three interfaces. We will discuss the fourth interface in detail in Chapter 6, Working with the DynamoDB API.

The management console

The management console is one of the most commonly used interfaces in DynamoDB because of its simplicity of use. There is another reason that the end user will prefer the management console: it doesn't require any software to start with. Just having an Internet connection and a browser is sufficient.

Once you sign up with AWS, just click on Management Console. This will take you to the following page:

The management console

The DynamoDB option is available in the Database section of the management console. We can click on this icon to begin DynamoDB. We will divide this section into two parts. Initially we will discuss how to manage a table and then we will discuss how to manage items using the management console.

Managing the DynamoDB table

Clicking on DynamoDB in the management console for the first time will open a page that consists of three sections:

  • The first section in the top-left corner provides information such as where the tables will be created (this can be changed by clicking...

The Eclipse plugin

Eclipse, being one of the most commonly-used open source integrated development environments (IDEs), provides a plugin to work with DynamoDB. In fact it provides a plugin to work with almost the entire AWS. We will now see how to perform DynamoDB operations such as table creation, index creation, items insertion, and query and scan operations.

First we will begin with setting up the DynamoDB plugin on Eclipse. Open Eclipse and select Install New Software from the Help menu.

The Eclipse plugin

In the following page, we need to enter http://aws.amazon.com/eclipse/ and hit Enter; this will display all the available plugins for AWS. You can either install everything or only the necessary components (it's better to install everything because there will be dependency between these plugins).

The Eclipse plugin

The following page will display the components that will be installed on Eclipse. Confirm them and proceed.

The Eclipse plugin

The following page will show the invalid components (AWS SDK for Android in the following screenshot...

The command-line interface

You can't beat classics, can you? Even though the previous two interfaces provide easy usage of DynamoDB, the command-line interface provides good flexibility and it makes life simple for advanced programmers by reducing the number of clicks; instead of using the management console or the Eclipse plugin for DynamoDB interaction, we can write some commands and program it to do certain redundant jobs.

To get the AWS CLI, go to the link shown in the following screenshot:

The command-line interface

Visit https://s3.amazonaws.com/aws-cli/AWSCLI64.msi to download the AWS CLI setup. Once the installation is complete, go to the path in the command prompt (the path might differ based on the platform, in my case the path is C:\Program Files\Amazon\AWSCLI). Run the aws configure command to configure CLI with our AWS credentials.

Hitting Enter will ask for the following four options:

The command-line interface

If we feel that any of the parameters have changed at all, type in aws configure again and provide the necessary details...

Summary

In this chapter we gained an insight into accessing DynamoDB in the management console and command line. We also took a look at the Eclipse plugin.

The chapter started with the DynamoDB table and item operations using the management console and we saw how to create a table with the necessary primary key and secondary index. Then we also discussed how to work on a table item. After that we configured our Eclipse IDE with the AWS plugin, created a table with secondary indexes, and then inserted a few items into the table. We then discussed how to make use of the table's primary key attributes and secondary index key attributes while querying that DynamoDB table. We also discussed how to change the region (or location) in which DynamoDB has to perform its operation. We saw how to download the AWS command-line tool and its configuration setup in our local system. Then we executed a few commands through the command-line interface, which performed the same DynamoDB operations as performed...

Had a quick look at this book at safaribooksonline. This book is a joke! Seems an India student copied it from DynamoDB developer guide. What the hell is the content related to design patterns!

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

I am a Packt subscriber, do I get Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Yes, all Early Access content is fully available through your subscription. You will need to have a paid for or active trial subscription in order to access all titles.

How is Early Access delivered? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is currently only available as a PDF or through our online reader. As we make changes or add new chapters, the files in your Packt account will be updated so you can download them again or view them online immediately.

How do I buy Early Access content? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
