Packaged Distributions

Even though it is recommended that SpamAssassin be installed from source, packaged distributions of software are more convenient for a system administrator. They are quick and easy to install. The main advantage is that the configuration is usually tested to work with the other software on the machine. The following sections describe the installation of packaged distributions of SpamAssassin.

RPM

If a version of Linux based on the RedHat Package Manager (RPM) format is used, then SpamAssassin can be installed from RPMs. SpamAssassin is packaged with many Linux distributions, and packages of new releases of SpamAssassin are often made available from other sources.

RPMs are not the recommended method of installing SpamAssassin, but are more reliable than building from source on unusual platforms. The best place to obtain an RPM of SpamAssassin is from the download page on the SpamAssassin website, http://www.spamassassin.org/. For any SpamAssassin release n.mm (for example...
