Translations and drupal.js There are four main families of tools in drupal.js: Theming functions. Translation functions. Utility functions. Support for Drupal behaviors. Even if you don't think you need the translation functions, I advise you to read this article. The tools covered here play a very important role in Drupal, even providing additional security to your code. Our focus in this article will be on the translation functions. When we talk about translation tools, what exactly are we talking about? Translation functions provide language translation facilities to JavaScript. Text that would normally be hardcoded into the JavaScript is translated through this system to the user's preferred language. As is the case with the theming system, the drupal.js translation system is designed to provide an API similar to the server-side PHP translation system. The translation functions are designed to be simple for the developer's use. In fact, the developer needn't even turn on Drupal's translation module to use the JavaScript libraries. The idea is to make it painless enough for the developer to use, and train the developer to habitually use the translation features. In order to show how things work, we will not only look at the translation functions, but also at how the larger translation system is used. Translation and languages One of the Drupal's more distinguished points is its well-integrated support for multiple languages. Drupal has been translated into dozens of languages, and installing and enabling a translation is a simple process. For these reasons, Drupal has gained an international audience. In earlier versions of Drupal, this language support was confined to server-side PHP code. JavaScript did not have access to the translation library. But with the release of Drupal 6, basic translation support was extended to JavaScript. In order to see how translations work, we are going to walk through the process of enabling the translation system on the server. We will then return to the drupal.js library to see how it uses the system. Translation functions are the portions of code that developers use to make it possible for code to perform translations when appropriate. The translation system is the part of Drupal that does the actual translation. We will start with this second part, the translation system, and then go back to the translation functions. English is the default language for Drupal. In fact, it is the only one installed by default. But since Drupal provides a complete language translation subsystem, and Drupal code is developed to support translation, enabling multi-language support is a straightforward process. We will begin by installing a new language. There are three steps that must be performed the first time you install a language: Multi-language support must be turned on. Translation files must be downloaded and installed. Drupal's translation preferences must be configured. We will briefly walk through this process. Turning on translation support By default, Drupal's translation support is disabled. It is disabled for the practical reason that if it is not needed, the performance hit incurred by the translation subsystem should be avoided. Turning it on is a matter of enabling a couple of modules. These modules are included in the Drupal core, so there's no need to download anything. All you need to do is go to Administer | Site building | Modules, and then check the boxes next to the Locale and Content translation modules. Once you've done that, click on the Save configuration button at the bottom of the screen. That should do it. Getting and installing translations Dozens of translations are available in the Translations repository on the official Drupal.org web site. To find and download a new language, go to http://drupal.org/project/Translations and download the desired language. Once you have the translation archive, you can install it by uncompressing the file in the same directory where Drupal is installed. For example, if Drupal is installed in /var/www/drupal (a common location for it on Linux servers), you will want to uncompress the translation file in /var/www/drupal. The language files will automatically be placed in the correct location. The next thing to do is to let Drupal know that you have a new language installed. Configuring languages Once we have downloaded and unpacked the desired language(s), we need to configure Drupal's language support to determine how to handle multiple languages. There are two steps to this process: Add the new language. Configure the global language settings. In the first step, we are going to let Drupal know about the new language. Adding the language We've already installed the language, but we also need to tell Drupal that we want it to go through the process of scanning the language files and compiling a translation database. This process is called adding a language. To do this, we need to go to the Administer | Site configuration | Languages page and click on the Add language tab as seen in the following screenshot: On this screen you will need to select the language from the Language name drop-down list. Unfortunately, this list is not limited to the languages you have already installed, so you will have to find the language in the list. Languages are indexed by their English name. Thus, you should look for German instead of Deutsch. Once you've found the language, click Add language and sit back while Drupal parses all of the language files. After the parsing is finished, we are ready to move on to the next step. Configuring languages We have multiple languages supported, now. But we need to tell Drupal how it should determine what language we want to see when we visit a page. To configure this, we can click on the Configure tab on the Administer | Site configuration | Languages page. There is only one set of options on this page: Language negotiation. These settings let us configure how Drupal will determine which language to display. By default, None is checked. This means only the default language will be used. Path prefix only determines which language to use based on a language identifier string present at the beginning of the URL. For example, my site is running at http://localhost:8888/drupal/. I have English set as the default language, and the Spanish translation is also installed. Using these settings if I type in the previous URL, I will see the page in English (the default language). However, if I type in the URL http://localhost:8888/drupal/es/, the site will be displayed in Spanish. The es identifier is a prefix to the Drupal portion of the URL. So if I want to view a node using the Spanish translation, the URL would look like this: http://localhost:8888/drupal/es/node/1. Path translation and language prefixesThe URLs mentioned make use of Drupal's clean URLs. By using Apache's mod_rewrite module, data that would normally appear in a query string can be embedded in the URL. If you do not have clean URLs turned on, then the previous URL would look something like this: http://localhost:8888/drupal?q=es/node/1. With the query string clearly isolated, it's a little easier to see how es is treated as a prefix. The Path prefix with language fallback option is similar to the previous option, except that it adds one more step. If the path provides a language prefix, then that language is used (assuming the language has been installed and added). But if no prefix is found, Drupal then checks the language preferences that the web browser sends in its HTTP headers. These look something like this: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070206 Firefox/3.0.1Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8Accept-Language: es,en-us;q=0.7,en;q=0.3Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflateAccept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7Keep-Alive: 300Connection: keep-aliveCache-Control: max-age=0 This is a subset of the HTTP headers my browser sent when requesting a page from Drupal (and I viewed the headers using Firebug). The highlighted line shows the language preferences. Spanish (es) is the first language, with US English (en-us) and generic English (en) set as my second and third choices. With Path prefix with language fallback enabled, when I type in http://localhost:8888/drupal/, I will get the page in Spanish because Drupal will inspect the Accept-language header and determine that it is the best language to use. If the Accept-language header isn't available, or there is no language match, then Drupal will fall back to the site's default language. Finally, the last language negotiation type is Domain name only. In this case, the domain name portion of the URL is used to determine language. For example, http://es.example.com would resolve to the Spanish language, while http://en.example.com would resolve to English. For multi-language development work, I find the Path prefix only choice to be the easiest to work with. The translation feature is used to translate the strings that appear in Drupal code. This is done manually by a dedicated team of translators. Consequently, enabling translation will not affect the content you create. For example, if you write content in English, it will not be translated to Spanish for you. Only the interface (built-in menus, module descriptions, and so on) will be translated. We now have multi-language support enabled, and you should be able to configure your Drupal installation to use more than one language. It's time to take the developer's perspective again. First, we will look at the main JavaScript translation functions. Then, we will look at a developer's tool to create translations.

We can use the BackgroundWorker component and then the Thread class to create new threads independent of the main application thread. The applications can respond to UI events, while the processing continues, and take full advantage of multiple cores, and can thus run faster. However, we are used to debugging applications that run in just one thread (the main thread), and there are many changes in the debugging process that generate great confusion when following the classic procedures running many concurrent threads. How can we successfully debug applications that are running many concurrent threads? Time for action – Understanding the difficulty in debugging concurrent threads Your cellular phone rings! The FBI agents have detected a problem with an encryption engine. When the application receives the same messages many times during a certain period, the encryption process generates exactly the same results, as shown in the following image: Thus, hackers could easily break the code once they discover this important bug. They ask for your help. Of course, you want to cooperate because you do not want the FBI agents to get angry with you. However, you need to debug the multithreaded encryption engine, and you have never done that! Let's create a solution for this problem! First, we are going to try to debug the multithreaded application the same way we do with a single-threaded application to understand the new problems we might face: Open the project, SMSEncryption. Define a breakpoint in the line int liThreadNumber = (int)poThreadParameter; in the ThreadEncryptProcedure procedure code. Press F5 or select Debug | Start Debugging in the main menu. Enter or copy and paste a long text (with more than 5,000 lines) in the Textbox labeled Original SMS Messages and click on the Run in a thread button. The line with the breakpoint defined is shown highlighted as the next statement that will be executed. Press F10 or select, Debug | Step Over in the main menu two or three times (depending on the number of cores you have in the computer). As you can see, the next statement that gets executed is the same even when you try to go on with the next one. It seems that the statement is not being executed. However, inspecting the value of poThreadParameter (the parameter passed to the ThreadEncryptProcedure procedure) shows that it changes each time you step over the statement, as shown in the following image: Stop the application and repeat the steps 1 to 5 to make sure you are not crazy because of parallelism, multithreading, and the FBI agents! What just happened? You are getting nervous about the debugging process! Do not worry. We will learn how to debug your encryption engine while the FBI agents kindly prepare a cup of fresh cappuccino for you. The debugger executed each new Thread class instance call to the Start method, with this line: prloThreadList[liThreadNumber].Start(liThreadNumber); Then, it entered in the ThreadEncryptProcedure method (we have used the same method for every created encryption thread) with different values for the poThreadParameter parameter. Therefore, you stayed in the same statement as many times as the threads were created (equivalent to the number of cores available in the computer) in the following line: int liThreadNumber = (int)poThreadParameter; As we can see, debugging this way is very confusing, because the IDE switches from one thread to another, and you loose control over the statements that are going to be executed next. In a debugging process, you need to know in which part of the application you are. As we tested our first attempt to debug a multithreaded application, we tried the same technique as with single-threaded applications. There are new subjects to learn and new techniques to use. Debugging concurrent threads When we need to inspect values, execute a procedure step-by-step, and find solutions to problems related to some specific code, the best way to achieve that with a multithreaded application is to work with it as a single-threaded application. But, how can we do that? It is very simple. We must run one thread at a time and freeze the other concurrent threads while we are debugging the thread in which we are interested and on which we are focusing. When we debug single-threaded applications, we are aware of the method in which we are positioned and its context. In multithreaded applications, we must also be aware of the thread in which we are positioned. If we do not know in which thread we are executing statements, we will be completely confused in just a few seconds, as happened in our previous activity. We must tailor our multithreaded applications to simplify the debugging process. If we do not do this, the debugging process will be a nightmare. Indeed, we do not want that to happen! Time for action – Finding the threads You wonder where the threads are. How can you guess in which thread you are working while executing the application step-by-step? You are an excellent C# programmer, but multithreaded debugging is very confusing. You do not want the FBI agents to realize that you are in trouble. However, you must hurry up, because they have a great training in detecting nervous people in the course of their usual interrogations. Now, we are going to use the IDE features to help us find the threads in a multithreaded application: Using the same project that we used in the previous example, with the same breakpoint defined, press F5 or select Debug | Start Debugging in the main menu. Enter or copy and paste a long text (with more than 5,000 lines) in the Textbox labeled Original SMS Messages and click on the Run in a thread button. The line with the breakpoint defined is shown highlighted as the next statement that will be executed. Select Debug | Windows | Threads in the main menu or press Ctrl + Alt + H. The Threads window will be shown, displaying all the threads created by the application process, as shown in the following image: The yellow arrow in the left of the thread list points out the current thread—the thread for which the IDE is showing the current statement. Press F10 or select Debug | Step Over in the main menu. As you can see, the next statement is the same again, but the current thread pointed out in the thread list changes, as shown in the following image: Go on running the application step-by-step and watch how the current thread changes. Observe the Threads window throughout your debugging process. What just happened? You found the threads in the debugging process. Now, you believe you will be able to make the necessary changes to the application if you learn a few debugging techniques quickly. The Threads window displays the list of threads created by the application process. Many of them are created automatically by the C# runtime. The others are created by the Thread class instances and the BackgroundWorker component we have in the application. Using the Threads window, we can easily determine in which thread we are executing when debugging a multithreaded application. It is indeed very helpful. Remember that each thread has its own stack.

How SNMP Behaves in the CUPS Web Interface In the CUPS web interface under the Administration tab, the option Find New Printers is used to discover printers that support SNMPv1. This will search and list the available network printers. The discovery of printers is based on the directive configuration done in the /etc/cups/snmp.conf file. On the basis of the search list, you can add a printer using the Add This Printer option. The process is very similar to the Add Printer wizard. Overview of Basic Debugging in CUPS-SNMP In the snmp.conf, we started discussion about various debugging levels in CUPS support. If the directive DebugLevel is set to anything other than 0, you will get the output accordingly. The debugging mode can be made active using the following command. As the SNMP backend supports debugging mode, the command for setting up debugging mode changes depending on the shell prompt. The SNMP backend is located at /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp when using the Bourne, Bash, Z, or Korn shells. The following command will output verbose debugging information into the cupssnmp.log file when using those shells: $CUPS_DEBUG_LEVEL=1 /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp 2>&1 | tee cupssnmp.log On Mac OS X, the SNMP backend is located /usr/libexec/cups. The following command will be used: $CUPS_DEBUG_LEVEL=1 /usr/libexec/cups/backend/snmp 2>&1 | tee cupssnmp.log If you are using the C or Tcsh shells, you can use the following command. $(setenv CUPS_DEBUG_LEVEL 1; /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp) |& tee cupssnmp.log An example of the output might look like this: DEBUG: Scanning for devices in "public" via "@LOCAL"... DEBUG: 0.000 Sending 46 bytes to 192.168.0.255... DEBUG: 0.001 Received 50 bytes from 192.168.0.250... DEBUG: community="public" DEBUG: request-id=1213875587 DEBUG: error-status=0 DEBUG: 1.001 Scan complete! The above output shows that doesn't find any printer at the specified DeviceURI. The above shows the output at the basic debugging level; more information can be found if we use level 2 or 3. Overview of mailto.conf The CUPS provides the facility to send notifications through email. It can be done by integrating the local mail server with CUPS. The configuration file is /etc/cups/mailto.conf, and contains several directives and the characteristics and behavior of the local mail server and email notification for CUPS. We normally use each of the following directives in our daily communication done through mail. The Cc Directive The directive Cc (carbon copy) is used to specify an additional recipient for all email notifications. By default, the value directive is not set and the email is sent only to the administrator. The following examples shows that how email IDs can be specified with this directive. Cc kajol@cupsgrp.com Cc Kajol Shah <ks@cupsgrp.com> The From Directive This directive is used to specify the sender's name in the email notifications. By default, the ServerAdmin address specified in the cupsd.conf file is used. The following are some examples that show how the sender's email is specified with this directive: From cupsadmin@cupsgrp.com From Your CUPS Printer <cupsadmin@cupsgrp.com> The Sendmail Directive The directive Sendmail specifies the command to run and deliver an email locally. If there is an SMTPServer directive, then this directive cannot be used. If both directives appear in the mailto.conf file, then only the last directive is used. The following example shows how this directive can be specified. The default value for this directive is /usr/sbin/sendmail. Sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail Sendmail /usr/lib/sendmail -bm -i The SMTPServer Directive This directive is used to specify an IP address or hostname of an SMTP mail server. As we have seen previously, this directive cannot be used with the Sendmail directive, and if both Sendmail and SMTPServer directives don't appear in the mailto.conf file, then the default Sendmail will be considered. The following are examples of the SMTP server: SMTPServer mail.mailforcups.com SMTPServer 192.168.0.17 The Subject Directive The Subject directive is used if you want to prefix some text to the subject line in each email that CUPS sends out. The following examples show how a prefix can be specified with this directive. By default, no prefix string is added: Subject [CUPS_ALERTS] Subject URGENT CUPS NOTICE Monitoring SNMP Printers As discussed, CUPS supports SNMPv1 for discovering SNMP enabled printers. This Simple Network Management Protocol-SNMP is used for managing networking printers. We can use any network monitoring tools that supports SNMP for monitoring these SNMP-enabled printers. You can check various open-source network monitoring tools at: http://www.openxtra.co.uk/network-management/monitor/open-source/ I would recommend you to use Cacti, which is a frontend to an RRDTool (Round Robin Database Tool) that collects and stores data in a MySQL database. The frontend is completely written in PHP. The advantage of Cacti over other network monitoring tool is that it has built-in SNMP capabilities and like other monitoring tools such as Nagios, it has its internal mechanism to check certain aspects of the infrastructure. It also provides a frontend for maintaining customized scripts, which an administrator normally creates. But the most important factor is that it is much easier to configure than Nagios. RRDTool is a system that stores high performance logging data and displays related time-series graphs. You can get more information about RRDTool from: http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/ Downloading and Installing Cacti The pre-requisites of Cacti include MySQL database, PHP, RRDTool, net-snmp, and PHP supported web servers such as Apache or IIS. You can get detailed information about the pre-requisites for Cacti installation at: http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/requirements.html The current stable release of Cacti is 0.8.7b. You can download various versions of Cacti for different platforms from: http://www.cacti.net/download_cacti.php You can get installation information for Cacti and its pre-requisites on the UNIX/Linux platform from: http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/install_unix.html The following URL will help you install Cacti on the Windows platform: http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/install_windows.html You can proceed further by clicking on Next. The next screen shows two options for a new install or an upgrade. If you want to do fresh installation, use the option New Install and click on Next. The screen also displays some useful information such as database user, database hostname, database name, and OS that was specified while configuring Cacti. If you want to upgrade the Cacti, follow the instructions mentioned here: http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/upgrade.html And then select the upgrade from cacti-current-version option and click on Next to proceed further. The following screen appears, which shows the recommended path of the binary files such as RRDTool, PHP, snmpwalk, snmpgetV, snmpbulkwalk, snmpgetnext, and information related to the Cacti log file and versions for net-snmp and RRDTool. If you found any change in the path with your installation, it should be modified first. Otherwise, Cacti may not work properly. Click on Finish to complete the installation procedure. Once the installation is finished and the next screen will ask for authentication. You need to use the username and the password mentioned in your database configuration to log into a Cacti application: You can use default login information to log in for the first time. Once you click on Login, the next screen will force you to change your password. Once the password is changed, you can see the main page of Cacti that contains two major tabs: console and graphs apart from other generalized options. The console tab contains various options related to the template and graphs management, whereas the graphs tab contains related graphs.

Fast Short-Running BPEL Let's begin with a discussion on compiled BPEL. Uses of Short-Running Processes Having developed an approach to keep SOA processes running for an arbitrarily long time, we now turn our attention to short-running processes and ask: howcan we make them run as fast as possible? The two most common uses of a short-running process are: To implement a synchronous web service operation. The process begins with an input message, runs through a quick burst of logic to process it, sends back the output message, and completes. The client application blocks for the duration, as diagram (a) in the next figure shows. If the process moves too slowly, the client will complain about the response time. To perform complex routing for the ESB. As David Chapelle discusses in his book Enterprise Service Bus (O'Reilly, 2004), a good ESB can natively perform basic content-based- and itinerary-based-routing, but it needs orchestration processes to handle more complex routing patterns. In diagram (b) in the figure, when the ESB receives a message, it passes it to an orchestration process that proceeds to perform in eight steps a series of transformation and invocation maneuvers that could never be achieved with the basic branching capabilities of the ESB. Again, speed is critical. The ESB prefers to get rid of messages as soon as it gets them. When it delegates work to an orchestration process, it expects that process to move quickly and lightly. Architecture for Short-Running Processes In considering a design to optimize the performance of these two cases, we assume that our stack has both an ESB and a process integration layer. All messages in and out of the stack go through the ESB. The ESB, when it receives an inbound message, routes it to the process integration engine for processing. The process integration engine, in turn, routes all outbound messages through the ESB. Further, we assume that the ESB uses message queues to converse with the process integration layer. Client applications, on the other hand, typically use web services to converse with the ESB. The following figure shows how we might enhance this architecture for faster short-running processes. (The implementation we consider is a Java-based BPEL process engine.) When a client application or partner process calls through the ESB, the ESB routes the event, based on the event's type, either to the general process integration engine or to an engine optimized for short-running processes. To route to the general engine, the ESB places the message on the Normal PI In Queue. That engine is drawn as a cloud; we are not concerned in this discussion with its inner workings. To route to the optimized engine, the ESB either queues the message on SR In Queue or, to reduce latency, directly calls the short-running engine's main class, ProcessManager. (Direct calls are suitable for the orchestration routing case described in the previous figure; there, processes run as an extension of the ESB, so it makes sense for the ESB to invoke them straightaway.) A set of execution threads pulls messages from SR In Queue and invokes ProcessManager to inject these inbound events to the processes themselves. The role of ProcessManager is to keep the state of, and to execute, short-running processes. Each process is represented in compiled form as a Java class (for example, ProcessA or ProcessB) that inherits from a base class called CompiledProcess. Compiled classes are generated by a tool called BPELCompiler, which creates Java code that represents the flow of control specified in the BPEL XML representation of the process. ProcessManager runs processes by creating and calling the methods of instances of CompiledProcess-derived classes. It also uses TimeManager to manage timed events. Processes, whether running on the general engine or on the optimized engine, send messages to partners by placing messages on the outbound queue Out Queue, which the ESB picks up and routes to the relevant partner. A general process engine is built to handle processes of all durations, long and short alike, and, with a mandate this extensive, does not handle the special case of time-critical short-running processes very effectively. There are three optimizations we require, and we build these into the short-running engine: Process state is held in memory. Process state is never persisted, even for processes with intermediate events. Completed process instances are cleaned out of memory immediately, so as to reduce the memory required. Processes are compiled, not interpreted. That is, the process definition is coded in Java class form, rather than as an XML document. Compilation speeds the execution time of a burst. The process may define timed events of a very short duration, to the order of milliseconds. Furthermore, the engine generates a fault when the process exceeds its SLA. The process may catch the fault or let it bubble up to the calling application. The architecture we sketched in this section, as we discover presently, is designed to meet these requirements. Example of a Very Fast Process The next figure shows a short-running process with multiple bursts that benefits from these optimizations. When the process starts, it initializes its variables (InitVars) and asynchronously invokes a partner process called the Producer (Call Producer Asynx). It then enters into a loop (FetchLoop) that, on each iteration, waits for one of the two events from the Producer: result or noMore. If it gets the result event, it, in parallel, invokes two handler services (Call Handler A and Call Handler B), and loops back. If it gets the noMore event, the process sets the loop's continuation flag to false (Set Loop Stop). The loop exits, and the process completes. While it waits for the producer events, the process also sets a timed event (too long) that fires if neither event arrives in sufficient time. If the timer expires, the process sends an exception message to the producer (Send Exception Msg Producer Async), and loops back. The timing characteristics are shown in parentheses. The producer, on average, sends a result or noMore event in 80 milliseconds. The handlers that the process invokes to handle a result event average 50 milliseconds and 70 milliseconds, but because they run in parallel, their elapsed time is the greater of these two times, or 70 milliseconds. Thus, an iteration of the loop with a result event averages roughly 150 milliseconds. Iteration with a noMore event averages just 80 milliseconds, because the activity Set Loop Stop runs nearly instantaneously. The cycle time of an instance with one result iteration and one noMore iteration is just 220 milliseconds. The too long timed event has a duration of 200 milliseconds, which in itself is rather a small interval, but is a huge chunk of time compared to the normal cycle time. The cycle time of an instance whose three intermediate events are result, too long, and noMore is 420 milliseconds on average. Times this fast cannot be achieved on a general-purpose engine. Running the Very Fast Process on the Optimized Engine The sequence diagram in the following figure illustrates how this process runs on the short-running engine: The process starts when client application sends a message intended to trigger the process' start event. The ProcessManager receives this event (either as a direct call or indirectly via an execution thread that monitors the short-running inbound queue) in its routeMessageEvent() method. It then checks with the process class—shown as Process in the figure, a subclass of the CompiledProcess class we discuss presently—whether it supports the given start event type (hasStartEvent()), and if so, injects the event into the process (onStartEvent()). The process, as part of its logic, performs the activities InitVars and CallProducerAsync and enters the first iteration of the while loop, in which it records in its data structures that it is now waiting for three pending events (Set Pending Events). Because one of these events is a timed event, it also registers that event with the TimeManager (addEvent()).The first burst is complete. In the second burst, the producer process responds with a result event (result: routeMessageEvent()). The ProcessManager checks whether the process instance is waiting for that event (hasPendingEvent()) and injects it (onIntermediateEvent()). The process invokes the two handlers (that is, it invokes CallHandler on HandlerA and HandlerB), completing the first iteration of the loop. It now loops back, resets the pending events (Set Pending Events), and registers a new timed event (addEvent()). The second burst is complete. Assuming the producer does not respond in sufficient time, the timer expires, and the TimeManager which checks for expired events on its own thread notifies the Process Manager (routeTimedEvent()). ProcessManager gives the event to the process (calling hasPendingEvent() to confirm that the process is waiting for it and onIntermediateEvent() to inject it), and the process in turn performs the SendExceptionMsg activity, completing the second iteration of the loop. The next iteration starts, and the process resets its pending events. The third burst is complete, and we leave it there.

Real world information architecture tips Based on what your users need and/or want to see, you need to structure your content within topics, or high-level containers that are typically content-specific sections. As an example, we will take a look at http://plone.org. When visitors enter a Plone site, no matter how deep they go, the navigation tends to stay the same. The following screenshot shows that a visitor is in the Documentation section of the site, with the opportunity to drill down within this section for additional documentation topics: By default, Plone has a portlet that shows the navigation aids on the left-hand side of the browser, which helps the visitors navigate within the subject matter. In this example, there are several subsections below Development. Structuring your content When planning your site, you must first decide how you want to structure your content. The structuring can be worked out through brainstorming sessions with other people involved with your site, in order to come up with a structure suits your business objectives. Investigating other sites that share your organization's model could be a good starting point towards developing your final solution. To really understand how Plone can be an effective solution for your content delivery needs, we will take a look at how to implement Plone for a High School web site. In this type of structure, you will see how some content is targeted at all users, while other content is tailored to specific users. We will use the following high-level topics for demonstration purposes: Home News Events Academics Sports Clubs PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) Alumni In order to create these sections, we will first create folders for the above sections, into which you will add content. Each of the above sections will be visible in your top-level navigation. Within each top-level folder, we will also create subfolders to help you to structure your content. To create a folder, go to your homepage, select Add new... and choose the Folder option from the drop-down list, as shown in the following screenshot: Specify the Title and the optional Description. In this case, we will create a folder for the Academics section: We're going to just keep the defaults here; we will cover the Settings tab shortly. Click on Save, and then make sure that your folder has been published: Now take a look at the overall navigation structure: There is now a new tab in your navigation bar, which represents a container for holding all of the content that will be part of the academics section of the site. You will follow the same process to create the rest of the top-level tabs. First, we will need to make a change to the default tab behavior in Plone. Specifically, we want to remove Users as a top-level navigation item. Removing it from the tab navigation does not mean that it no longer exists; we're just making sure that items that are more important to this specific site are shown to the visitors and users. To remove Users from the navigation bar, click on the Users tab, and then select Edit. Once you are in Edit mode, there is the section where you can select Settings. You can then select the Exclude from navigation checkbox. After saving your changes, you can see that the tab Users is no longer part of your navigation: Using the same process for adding new folders, we'll add Sports, Clubs and PTO. We end up with the following: Now that we have the top-level structure in place, we can focus on what will need to go within each topic. The process is similar, with the difference being that you need to be within the given topic before creating the next level of folders. When you create folders in the Home section, you have the ability to create top-level tabs. Creating folders within the other top-level folders you create allows you to be more specific for the given topic. We will use the example of the Sports top-level tab for creating an additional folder/site structure. We will need to create the following sub-folders: Football Basketball Soccer Track and Field Lacrosse Baseball Softball To do so, we must drill down into the Sports folder and add new folders within it. Once you have added these folders under the Sports section, the Navigation to the new folders is available in the leftmost side of your browser window: Note that the navigation shows only the contents of the current folder. This can be adjusted via the Manage portlets link, which is available on the home page, below the left and right columns. This link is also accessible via http://www.mysite.com/@@manage-portlets, where www.mysite.com is the name of your Plone site. Simply set the Start Level to 0 and save your changes. Now that the structure for the Sports folder is in place, let's take a look at how you can change the order of display of the folders. If the football season is over, it may make sense to move this category to the bottom of the navigation. To change the order of the Football folder, go to the Contents view under Sports, then click in the Order column for the Football row. The row will turn yellow, and the cursor will change to a four-headed arrow, which indicates that the content object can be moved. Drag the row up or down in the list, to the desired location. Now, when you click on the top level of Sports, the navigation listing appears in the new location that you have just defined: Now, let's take the new folder structure created under the Sports section, and create some more folders that are specific to each sub topic. Select a folder, and then go to the Contents tabbed page. In this example, we will create the following folders under the Soccer folder, which is under the Sports folder: Varsity Boys Girls Junior Varsity Boys Girls Boosters As identified in the preceding screenshot, the breadcrumbs navigation shows the progression through the site. You can also see how the navigation within the Sports section can grow to fit specific content. By understanding these concepts that apply creating folders for your navigation structure, you will be well on your way to having consistent navigation throughout your site.

JDeveloper built-in schema validation Oracle JDeveloper 11g has built-in support for XML schema validation. If an XML document includes a reference to an XML schema, the XML document may be validated with the XML schema using the built-in feature. An XML schema may be specified in an XML document using the xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute or the xsi:namespaceSchemaLocation attribute. Before we discuss when to use which attribute, we need to define the target namespace. A schema is a collection of type definitions and element declarations whose names belong to a particular namespace called a target namespace. Thus, a target namespace distinguishes between type definitions and element declarations from different collections. An XML schema doesn't need to have a target namespace. If the XML schema has a target namespace, specify the schema's location in an XML document using the xsi:namespaceSchemaLocation attribute. If the XML schema does not have a target namespace, specify the schema location using the xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute. The xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation and xsi:namespaceSchemaLocation attributes are a hint to the processor about the location of an XML schema document. The example XML document does not include any namespace elements. Therefore, the schema is specified with the xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute in the root element catalog. The XML schema may be specified with a relative URL, or a file, or an HTTP URL. The xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute we added specifies the relative path to the XML schema document catalog.xsd. To validate the XML document with the XML schema, right-click on the XML document and select Validate XML . The XML document gets validated with the XML schema and the output indicates that the XML document does not have any validation errors. To demonstrate validation errors, add a non-valid element to the XML document. As an example, add the following element to the catalog element after the first journal element: <article></article> To validate the modified XML document, right-click on the XML document and select Validate XML. The output indicates validation errors. All the elements after the non-valid element become non-valid. For example, the journal element is valid as a subelement of the catalog element, but because the second journal element is after the non-valid article element, the journal element also becomes non-valid as indicated in the validation output. XDK 11g also provides a schema validation-specific API known as XSDValidator to validate an XML document with an XML schema. The choice of validation method depends on the additional functionality required in the validation application. XSDValidator is suitable for validation if all that is required is schema validation. Setting the environment Create an application (SchemaValidation, for example) and a project (SchemaValidation, for example) in JDeveloper. To create an application and a project select File | New. In the New Gallery window, select Categories | General and Items | Generic Application. Click on OK. In the Create Generic Application window, specify an Application Name and click on Next. In the Name your Generic project window, specify a Project Name and click on Finish. An application and a project get created. Next, add some XDK 11g JAR files to the project classpath. Select the project node in Application Navigator, and select Tools | Project Properties. In the Project Properties window, select Libraries and Classpath. Click on the Add Library button to add a library. In the Add Library window, select the Oracle XML Parser v2 library and click on the OK button. The Oracle XML Parser v2 library gets added to the project Libraries. Select the Add JAR/Directory button to add JAR file xml.jar from the C:OracleMiddlewarejdevelopermodulesoracle.xdk_11.1.1 directory. First, create an XML document and an XML schema in JDeveloper. To create an XML document, select File | New. In the New Gallery window select Categories | General | XML. In the Items listed select XML Document, and click on the OK button. In the Create XML File wizard, specify the XML file name, catalog.xml, and click on the OK button. An XML document gets added to the SchemaValidation project in Application Navigator. To add an XML schema, select File | New, and General | XML in the New Gallery window. Select XML schema in the Items listed. Click on the OK button. An XML schema document gets added to SchemaValidation project. The example XML document, catalog.xml, consists of a journal catalog. Copy the XML document to the catalog.xml file in the JDeveloper project. The example XML document does not specify the location of the XML schema document to which the XML document must conform to, because we will be setting the XML schema document in the schema validation application. If the XML schema document is specified in the XML document and the schema validation application, the schema document set in the schema validation application is used. Next, copy the example XML schema document, catalog.xsd to catalog.xsd in the JDeveloper project Schema Validation. Each XML schema is required to be in the XML schema namespace http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema. The XML schema namespace is specified with a namespace declaration in the root element, schema, of the XML schema. A namespace declaration is of the format > Next, we will create Java classes for schema validation. Select File | New and subsequently Categories | General and Items | Java Class in the New Gallery window to create a Java class for schema validation. Click on the OK button. In the Create Java Class window specify a Class Name, XMLSchemaValidator, and a package name, schemavalidation, and click on the OK button. A Java class gets added to the SchemaValidation project. Similarly, add Java classes, DOMValidator and SAXValidator. The schema validation applications are shown in the Application Navigator.

Everything in this article uses utilities from the BIRT Runtime installation package, available from the BIRT homepage at http://www.eclipse.org/birt. BIRT Viewer The BIRT Viewer is a J2EE application that is designed to demonstrate how to implement the Report Engine API to execute reports in an online web application. For most basic uses—such as for small to medium size Intranet applications—this is an appropriate approach. The point to keep in mind about the BIRT Web Viewer is that it is an example application. It can be used as a baseline for more sophisticated web applications that will implement the BIRT Report Engine API. Installation of the BIRT Viewer is documented at a number of places. The Eclipse BIRT website has some great tutorials at: http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/deploy/viewerSetup.php http://wiki.eclipse.org/BIRT/FAQ/Deployment This is also documented on my website in a series of articles introducing people to BIRT: http://digiassn.blogspot.com/2005/10/birt-report-server-pt-2.html I won't go into the details about installing Apache Tomcat as this is covered in depth in other locations, but I will cover how to install the Viewer in a Tomcat environment. For the most part these instructions can be used in other J2EE containers, such as WebSphere. In some cases a WAR package is used instead. I prefer Tomcat because it is a widely used open-source J2EE environment. Under the BIRT Runtime package is a folder containing an example Web Viewer application. The Web Viewer is a useful application as you require basic report viewing capabilities, such as parameter passing, pagination, and export capabilities to formats such as Word, Excel, RTF, and CSV. For this example, I have Apache Tomcat 5.5 installed into a folder at C:apache-tomcat-5.5.25. To install the Web Viewer, I simply need to copy the WebViewerExample folder from the BIRT Runtime to the web application folder at C:apache-tomcat-5.5.25webapps. Accessing the BIRT Web Viewer is as simple as calling the WebViewerExample Context. When copying the WebViewerExample folder, you can rename this folder to anything you want. Obviously WebViewerExample is not a good name for an online web application. So in the following screenshot, I renamed the WebViewerExample folder to birtViewer, and am accessing the BIRT Web Viewer test report. Installing Reports into the Web Viewer Once the BIRT Viewer is set up, Deploying reports is as simple as copying the report design files, Libraries, or report documents into the application's Context, and calling it with the appropriate URL parameters. For example, we will install the reports from the Classic Cars – With Library folder into the BIRT Web Viewer at birtViewer. In order for these reports to work, all dependent Libraries need to be installed with the reports. In the case of the example application, we currently have the report folder set to the Root of the web application folder. Accessing Reports in the Web Viewer Accessing reports is as simple as passing the correct parameters to the Web Viewer. In the BIRT Web Viewer, there are seven servlets that you can call to run reports, which are as follows: frameset run preview download parameter document output Out of these, you will only need frameset and run as the other servlets are for Engine-related purposes, such as the preview for the Eclipse designer, the parameter Dialog, and the download of report documents. Out of the these two servlets, frameset is the one that is typically used for user interaction with reports, as it provides the pagination options, parameter Dialogs, table of contents viewing, and export and print Dialogs. The run servlet only provides report output. There are a few URL parameters for the BIRT Web Viewer, such as: __format : which is the output format, either HTML or PDF. __isnull: which sets a Report Parameter to null, parameter name as a value. __locale: which is the reports locale. __report: which is the report design file to run. __document: which is the report document file to open. Any remaining URL parameter will be treated as a Report Parameter. In the following image, I am running the Employee_Sales_Percentage.rptdesign file with the startDate and endDate parameters set.

Basic Dojo layout facts The Layout widgets in Dojo are varied in nature, but their most common use is as 'windows' or areas which organize and present other widgets or information. Several use the same kind of child elements the ContentPane. The ContentPane is a widget which can contain other widgets and plain HTML, reload content using Ajax and so on. The ContentPane can also be used stand-alone in a page, but is more usable inside a layout container of some sort. And what is a layout container? Well, it's a widget which contains ContentPanes, of course. A layout container can often contain other widgets as well, but most containers work very well with a different configuration of ContentPanes, which properly insulates the further contents. Take the TabContainer, for example. It is used to organize two or more ContentPanes, where each gets its own tab. When a user clicks on one of the tabs, the ContentPane inside it is shown and all others are hidden. Using BorderManager can bring the necessary CSS styling down to a minimum, while giving a simple interface for managing dynamic changes of child widgets and elements. ContentPane A ContentPane can look like anything of course, so it doesn't really help putting a screen-dump of one on the page. However, the interface is very good to know. The following arguments are detected by ContentPane and can be used when creating one either programmatically or by markup: // href: String //The href of the content that displays now. //Set this at construction if you want to load data externally //when the pane is shown.(Set preload=true to load it immediately.) //Changing href after creation doesn't have any effect; //see setHref(); href: "", //extractContent: Boolean //Extract visible content from inside of <body> .... </body> extractContent: false, //parseOnLoad: Boolean //parse content and create the widgets, if any parseOnLoad:true, //preventCache: Boolean //Cache content retreived externally preventCache:false, //preload: Boolean //Force load of data even if pane is hidden. preload: false, //refreshOnShow: Boolean //Refresh (re-download) content when pane goes from hidden to shown refreshOnShow: false, //loadingMessage: String //Message that shows while downloading loadingMessage: "<span class='dijitContentPaneLoading'>$ {loadingState}</span>", //errorMessage: String //Message that shows if an error occurs errorMessage: "<span class='dijitContentPaneError'>${errorState}</span>", You don't need any of those, of course. A simple way to create a ContentPane would be: var pane = new dojo.layout.ContentPane({}); And a more common example would be the following: var panediv = dojo.byId('panediv');var pane = new dojo.layout.ContentPane({ href: "/foo/content.html", preload: true}, panediv); where we would have an element already in the page with the id 'panediv'. As you see, there are also a couple of properties that manage caching and parsing of contents. At times, you want your ContentPane to parse and render any content inside it (if it contains other widgets), whereas other times you might not (if it contains a source code listing, for instance). You will see additional properties being passed in the creation of a ContentPane which are not part of the ContentPane itself, but are properties that give information specific to the surrounding Container. For example, the TabContainer wants to know which tab this is, and so on. Container functions All container widgets arrange other widgets, and so have a lot of common functionality defined in the dijit._Container class. The following functions are provided for all Container widgets: addChild: Adds a child widget to the container. removeChild: Removes a child widget from the container. destroyDescendants: Iterates over all children, calling destroy on each. getChildren: Returns an array containing references to all children. hasChildren: Returns a boolean. LayoutContainer The LayoutContainer is a widget which lays out children widgets according to one of five alignments: right, left, top, bottom, or client. Client means "whatever is left", basically. The widgets being organized need not be ContentPanes, but this is normally the case. Each widget then gets to set a layoutAlign property, like this: layoutAlign = "left". The normal way to use LayoutContainer is to define it using markup in the page, and then define the widgets to be laid out inside it. LayoutContainer has been superceeded by BorderContainer, and will be removed in Dojo version 2.0. SplitContainer The SplitContainer creates a horizontal or vertical split bar between two or more child widgets. A markup declaration of a SplitContainer can look like this: <div dojoType="dijit.layout.SplitContainer" orientation="vertical" sizerWidth="7" activeSizing="false" style="border: 1px solid #bfbfbf; float: left; margin-right: 30px; width: 400px; height: 300px;"> The SplitContainer must have a defined height and width. The orientation property is self-explanatory, as is sizerWidth. The property activeSizing means, if set to true, that the child widgets will be continually resized when the user changes the position of the sizer. This can be bad if the child widgets are complex or access remote information to render themselves, in which case the setting can be set to false, as in the above example. Then the resize event will only be sent to the child widgets when the user stops. Each child widget needs to define the sizeMin and sizeShare attributes. The sizeMin attribute defines the minimum size for the widget in pixels, but the sizeShare attribute is a relative value for the share of space this widget takes in relation to the other widget's sizeShare values. If we have three widgets inside the SplitPane with sizeShare values of 10, 40 and 50, they will have the same ratios in size as if the values had been 1:4:5. StackContainer The StackContainer hides all children widgets but only one at any given time, and is one of the base classes for both the Accordion and TabContainers. StackContainer exists as a separate widget to allow you to define how and when the child widgets are shown. Maybe you would like to define a special kind of control for changing between child widget views, or maybe you want other events in your application to make the Container show specific widgets. Either way, the StackContainer is one of the most versatile Containers, along with the BorderContainer. The following functions are provided for interacting with the StackContainer: back - Selects and shows the previous child widget. forward - Selects and shows the next child widget. getNextSibling - Returns a reference to the next child widget. getPreviousSibling - Returns a reference to the previous child widget. selectChild - Takes a reference to the child widget to select and show.   Here is the slightly abbreviated markup for the test shown above (test_StackContainer.html): <div id="myStackContainer" dojoType="dijit.layout.StackContainer" style="width: 90%; border: 1px solid #9b9b9b; height: 20em; margin: 0.5em 0 0.5em 0; padding: 0.5em;"> <p id="page1" dojoType="dijit.layout.ContentPane" title= "page 1">IT WAS the best of times, ....</p> <p id="page2" dojoType="dijit.layout.ContentPane" title= "page 2">There were a king with a large jaw ...</p> <p id="page3" dojoType="dijit.layout.ContentPane" title= "page 3">It was the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy- five. .../p></div> The StackContainer also publishes topics on certain events which can be caught using the messaging system. The topics are: [widgetId]-addChild [widgetId]-removeChild [widgetId]-selectChild [widgetId]-containerKeyPress Where [widgetId] is the id of this widget. So if you had a StackContainer defined in the following manner: <div id="myStackContainer" dojoType="dijit.layout.StackContainer">...</div> You can use the following code to listen to events from your StackContainer: dojo.subscribe("myStackContainer-addChild", this, function(arg){ var child = arg[0]; var index = arg[1];}); Compare with the following code from the StackContainer class itself: addChild: function(/*Widget*/ child, /*Integer?*/ insertIndex) { // summary: Adds a widget to the stack this.inherited(arguments); if(this._started) { // in case the tab titles have overflowed from one line // to two lines this.layout(); dojo.publish(this.id+"-addChild", [child, insertIndex]); // if this is the first child, then select it if(!this.selectedChildWidget) { this.selectChild(child); } } }, Also declared in the class file for the StackContainer is the dijit.layout.StackController. This is a sample implementation of a separate widget which presents user controls for stepping forward, backward, and so on in the widget stack. What differentiates this widget from the Tabs in the TabContainer, for example, is that the widget is completely separate and uses the message bus to listen to events from the StackContainer. You can use it as-is, or subclass it as a base for you own controllers. But naturally, you can build whatever you want and connect the events to the forward() and back() function on the StackContainer. It's interesting to note that at the end of the files that define StackContainer, the _Widget base class for all widgets is extended in the following way: //These arguments can be specified for the children of a//StackContainer.//Since any widget can be specified as a StackContainer child,//mix them into the base widget class. (This is a hack, but it's//effective.)dojo.extend(dijit._Widget, {//title: String//Title of this widget.Used by TabContainer to the name the tab, etc.title: "",//selected: Boolean//Is this child currently selected?selected: false,//closable: Boolean//True if user can close (destroy) this child, such as//(for example) clicking the X on the tab.closable: false, //true if user can close this tab paneonClose: function(){//summary: Callback if someone tries to close the child, child//will be closed if func returns true return true; }}); This means that all child widgets inside a StackContainer (or Tab or AccordionContainer) can define the above properties, which will be respected and used accordingly. However, since the properties are applied to the _Widget superclass they are of course now generic to all widgets, even those not used inside any containers at all. The most commonly used property is the closable property, which adds a close icon to the widget and title, which defines a title for the tab. A lot of Dijits respond to keypress events, according to WAI rules. In this case, the former. If DOWN, RIGHT, or TAB is pressed, forward will be set to true, which will declare the next child widget to be activated and shown. If DELETE or w is pressed and the current child widget is closable, it will be destroyed. TabContainer The TabContainer, which derives from StackContainer, organizes all its children into tabs, which are shown one at a time. As you can see in the picture below, the TabContainer can also manage hierarchical versions of itself. The TabContainer takes an argument property called tabPosition, which controls where the tab icons are displayed for each tab. Possible values are "top", "bottom", "left-h", "right-h", with "top" as default. There are no special functions provided for TabContainer, which adds very little logic to that provided from the StackContainer superclass. AccordionContainer The AccorionContainer shows a horizontal bar for each added child widget, which represents its collapsed state. The bar acts as a tab and also holds the title defined for the child widget. When the bar is clicked, an animation hides the current widget, and also animates in the widget whose bar was clicked. However, the AccordionPane has ContentPane as superclass, and defines itself slightly differently due to the special looks of an accordion. Also, the AccordionPane does not currently support nested Layout widgets, even though single-level widgets are supported. BorderContainer The BorderContainer has replaced the functionality of both LayoutContainer and SplitContainer. Note that the outermost BorderContainer widget does not carry any layout information. This is instead delegated to each individual widget. As each child gets added to the BorderContainer, the layout is recalculated. Using the BorderContainer is a very good alternative to using CSS-based "tableless tables". For using the BorderContainer, you don't need any other rules, and the Container recalculates positioning automatically, without the need for additional CSS rules (except for the height/width case below) each time you add an element or widget to the area. Since BorderContainer widget replaces both SplitContainer and LayoutContainer, it both lets its child widgets declare where they are in relation to each other. Optionally, add resizing splitter between children. Also, instead of optionally declaring one child as "client", one child must now always be declared as "center". For some reason, the child widget now use region, instead of layoutAlign, so a child widget which would have been defined like this in LayoutContainer: <div dojoType="dijit.layout.ContentPane" layoutAlign="top">...</div> is now defined like this instead: <div dojoType="dijit.layout.ContentPane" region="top">...</div> All "side" widgets must define a width, in style, by CSS class or otherwise, and the same applies for top/bottom widgets, but with height. Center widgets must not declare either height or width, since they use whatever is left over from the other widgets. You can also use leading and trailing instead of right and left. The only difference is that when you change locale to a region that has text going from right to left (like Arabic and many others), this will arrange the widgets appropriate to the locale. The BorderContainer also takes an optional design property, which defines if the BorderContainer is a headline or sidebar. The headline is the default and looks like the picture below. headline means that the top and bottom widgets extend the full length of the container, whereas sidebar means the the right and left (or leading and trailing) widgets extend top to bottom. The sizeShare attribute for the ContentPanes used in the SplitContainer is deprecated in BorderContainer. All ContentPanes sizes are defined using regular techniques (direct stylin, classes, and so on). Depending on what kind of application you are building, the BorderContainer might be a good starting point. Since you already know that you can change and reload the contents of individual ContentPanes, you are left with a layout in which each element can function as a lightweight Iframe with none of the negative side effects. DragPane The DragPane is a very simple idea. You have a very large area of elements to display, and want to let the user 'drag' the underlying pane around using the mouse. The DragPane can be used in instances where you have a lot of pictures to present. It can also be used to present text or other widgets that are too numerous to fit in your current designated area of screen real estate. The only property of DragPane is invert, which if set to true, inverts the axis of the drag of the mouse. Input Formats and Filters It is necessary to stipulate the type of content we will be posting, in any given post. This is done through the use of the Input format setting that is displayed when posting content to the site—assuming the user in question has sufficient permissions to post different types of content. In order to control what is and is not allowed, head on over to the Input formats link under Site configuration. This will bring up a list of the currently defined input formats, like this: At the moment, you might be wondering why we need to go to all this trouble to decide whether people can add certain HTML tags to their content. The answer to this is that because both HTML and PHP are so powerful, it is not hard to subvert even fairly simple abilities for malicious purposes. For example, you might decide to allow users the ability to link to their homepages from their blogs. Using the ability to add a hyperlink to their postings, a malicious user could create a Trojan, virus or some other harmful content, and link to it from an innocuous and friendly looking piece of HTML like this: <p>Hi Friends! My <a href="link_to_trojan.exe">homepage</a> is a great place to meet and learn about my interests and hobbies. </p> This snippet writes out a short paragraph with a link, supposedly to the author's homepage. In reality, the hyperlink reference attribute points to a trojan, link_to_trojan.exe. That's just HTML! PHP can do a lot more damage—to the extent that if you don't have proper security or disaster-recovery policies in place, then it is possible that your site can be rendered useless or destroyed entirely. Security is the main reason why, as you may have noticed from the previous screenshot, anything other than Filtered HTML is unavailable for use by anyone except the administrator. By default, PHP is not even present, let alone disabled. When thinking about what permissions to allow, it is important to re-iterate the tenet: Never allow users more permissions than they require to complete their intended tasks! As they stand, you might not find the input formats to your liking, and so Drupal provides some functionality to modify them. Click on the configure link adjacent to the Filtered HTML option, and this will bring up the following page: The Edit tab provides the option to alter the Name property of the input format; the Roles section in this case cannot be changed, but as you will see when we come around to creating our own input format, roles can be assigned however you wish to allow certain users to make use of an input format, or not. The final section provides a checklist of the types of Filters to apply when using this input format. In this previous screenshot, all have been selected, and this causes the input format to apply the: HTML corrector – corrects any broken HTML within postings to prevent undesirable results in the rest of your page. HTML filter – determines whether or not to strip or remove unwanted HTML. Line break converter – Turns standard typed line breaks (i.e. whenever a poster clicks Enter) into standard HTML. URL filter – allows recognized links and email addresses to be clickable without having to write the HTML tags, manually. The line break converter is particularly useful for users because it means that they do not have to explicitly enter <br> or <p> HTML tags in order to display new lines or paragraph breaks—this can get tedious by the time you are writing your 400th blog entry. If this is disabled, unless the user has the ability to add the relevant HTML tags, the content may end up looking like this: Click on the Configure tab, at the top of the page, in order to begin working with the HTML filter. You should be presented with something like this: The URL filter option is really there to help protect the formatting and layout of your site. It is possible to have quite long URLs these days, and because URLs do not contain spaces, there is nowhere to naturally split them up. As a result, a browser might do some strange things to cater for the long string and whatever it is; this will make your site look odd. Decide how many characters the longest string should be and enter that number in the space provided. Remember that some content may appear in the sidebars, so you can't let it get too long if they is supposed to be a fixed width. The HTML filter section lets you specify whether to Strip disallowed tags, or escape them (Escape all tags causes any tags that are present in the post to be displayed as written). Remember that if all the tags are stripped from the content, you should enable the Line break converter so that users can at least paragraph their content properly. Which tags are to be stripped is decided in the Allowed HTML tags section, where a list of all the tags that are to be allowed can be entered—anything else gets handled appropriately. Selecting Display HTML help forces Drupal to provide HTML help for users posting content—try enabling and disabling this option and browsing to this relative URL in each case to see the difference: filter/tips. There is quite a bit of helpful information on HTML in the long filter tips; so take a moment to read over those. The filter tips can be reached whenever a user expands the Input format section of the content post and clicks on More information about formatting options at the bottom of that section. Finally, the Spam link deterrent is a useful tool if the site is being used to bombard members with links to unsanctioned (and often unsavory) products. Spammers will use anonymous accounts to post junk (assuming anonymous users are allowed to post content) and enabling this for anonymous posts is an effective way of breaking them. This is not the end of the story, because we also need to be able to create input formats in the event we require something that the default options can't cater for. For our example, there are several ways in which this can be done, but there are three main criteria that need to be satisfied before we can consider creating the page. We need to be able to: Upload image files and attach them to the post. Insert and display the image files within the body of the post. Use PHP in order to dynamically generate some of the content (this option is really only necessary to demonstrate how to embed PHP in a posting for future reference). There are several methods for displaying image files within posts. The one we will discuss here, does not require us to download and install any contribution modules, such as Img_assist. Instead, we will use HTML directly to achieve this, specifically, we use the <img> tag. Take a look at the previous screenshot that shows the configure page of the Filtered HTML input format. Notice that the <img> tag is not available for use. Let's create our own input format to cater for this, instead of modifying this default format. Before we do, first enable the PHP Filter module under Modules in Site building so that it can easily be used when the time comes. With that change saved, you will find that there is now an extra option to the Filters section of each input format configuration page: It's not a good idea to enable the PHP evaluator for either of the default options, but adding it to one of our own input formats will be ok to play with. Head on back to the main input formats page under Site configuration (notice that there is an additional input format available, called PHP code) and click on Add input format. This will bring up the same configuration type page we looked at earlier. It is easy to implement whatever new settings you want, based on how the input format is to be used. For our example, we need the ability to post images and make use of PHP scripts, so make the new input format as follows: As we will need to make use of some PHP code a bit later on, we have enabled the PHP evaluator option, as well as prevented the use of this format for anyone but ourselves—normally, you would create a format for a group of users who require the modified posting abilities, but in this case, we are simply demonstrating how to create a new input format; so this is fine for now. PHP should not be enabled for anyone other than yourself, or a highly trusted administrator who needs it to complete his or her work. Click Save configuration to add this new format to the list, and then click on the Configure tab to work on the HTML filter. The only change required between this input format and the default Filtered HTML, in terms of HTML, is the addition of the <img> and <div> tags, separated by a space in the Allowed HTML tags list, as follows: As things stand at the moment, you may run into problems with adding PHP code to any content postings. This is because some filters affect the function of others, and to be on the safe side, click on the Rearrange tab and set the PHP evaluator to execute first: Since the PHP evaluator's weight is the lowest, it is treated first, with all the others following suit. It's a safe bet that if you are getting unexpected results when using a certain type of filter, you need to come to this page and change the settings. We'll see a bit more about this, in a moment. Now, the PHP evaluator gets dibs on the content and can properly process any PHP. For the purposes of adding images and PHP to posts (as the primary user), this is all that is needed for now. Once satisfied with the settings save the changes. Before building the new page, it is probably most useful to have a short discourse on HTML, because it is a requirement if you are to attempt more complex postings.

Accordion animation You may have noticed the default slide animation built into the accordion. Apart from this, there are two other built-in animations that we can easily make use of. We can also switch off animations entirely by supplying false as the value of the animated property, although this doesn't look too good! The other values we can supply are bounceslide and easeslide. However, these aren't actually unique animations as such. These are different easing styles which don't change the animation itself but instead, alter the way it runs. You should note at this stage that additional jQuery plugins are required for these easing methods. For example, the bounceslide easing method causes the opening drawer to appear to bounce up and down slightly as it reaches the end of the animation. On the other hand, easeslide makes the animation begin slowly and then builds up to its normal speed. Let's take a moment to look at these different easing methods now. We've used a couple of new script files in the source code. The jquery.easing.1.3.js file is the latest version of the easing plugin, and the jquery.easing.compatibility.js plugin which enables the latest version of the easing file to work without any further modifications. The easing type names were renamed in version 1.2 of the easing plugin. Both of these files can be found on the jQuery site. The built-in easing effects, based on a series of equations created by Robert Penner in 2006, are very easy to use and create a great effect which can help build individuality into accordion implementations Plugins There are many jQuery plugins available. These are often developed by the open-source community instead of the library's authors and can be used with jQuery and jQuery UI. A good place to find plugins is on the jQuery site itself at http://plugins.jquery.com/. Some of these plugins, such as the easing plugin, work with the library components, while other plugins, such as the compatibility plugin, assist other plugins. Accordion events The accordion defines the custom change event which is fired after a drawer on the accordion opens or closes. To react to this event, we can use the change configuration property to specify a function to be executed every time the event occurs. This function will automatically receive two objects as arguments. The first object is the event object which contains information about the event. The second object is an object containing useful information about the accordion widget, such as the content drawer that just opened or closed. In the mark-up for the accordion, we have given each of the content drawer <div> elements an id attribute which can be used in the alert generated by the change callback. We can use the ui.newContent and ui.oldContent properties to obtain the relevant content drawer and display its id in the alert. The accordion widget also defines the accordion change event which is fired after a drawer on the accordion opens or closes. To react to this event, we can use the standard jQuery bind() method to specify a callback function, just like with the tabs widget.

Creating our first container In VWD (Visual Web Developer), from the Solution Explorer window, find the following location and create a new folder called FirstSkin: ~/Portals/_default/Containers/ Add a new item by right-clicking on this new folder. Add a new HTML file and call it Container.htm. Similarly, add a CSS and an XML file, Container.css and Container.xml respectively. Clear out all the code in the newly created files that VWD initializes it with. DNN tokens for containers These tokens, however, have applied mostly to creating skins, not containers. Containers have their own set of tokens to use here. The following is a listing of them. We'll be working with them throughout the rest of this article. Actions: This is the menu that will appear when you hover over the triangle. It is traditionally placed to the left of the icon and title of the module. Title: As you can imagine, this is the title of the module displayed in the container. This is usually placed at the top. Icon: Most of the modules don't have an icon, but many of the administrative pages in DotNetNuke have icons assigned to them. You can always assign icons to your modules, but none of them are set by default. Visibility: This skin object is traditionally displayed as a plus or a minus sign inside a small square. It acts as a toggle to show or hide/collapse or expand the content of the module. Content Pane: Similar to when we created our skin, this is where the content goes. The difference here is that we have only one content pane. It is required in order to make the container work. LINKACTIONS: This isn't used very often in containers. It is a listing of links that gives you access to the same things contained in the ACTIONS skin object. PRINTMODULE: This is the small printer icon you see in the preceding screenshot. When you click on it, it allows you to print the contents of the module. ACTIONBUTTON: This skin object allows you to display items as links or image links to commonly used items found in the actions menu. The last item on that list, the ActionButton, is different from the others in that we can have several uses of it in different ways. When used as a token, you would place them in your container HTM file as [ACTIONBUTTON:1], [ACTIONBUTTON:2], [ACTIONBUTTON:3], and so on. As you can imagine, we would define what each of these action buttons refer to. We do this in the XML file with an attribute called CommandName. SyndicateModule.Action: This is an XML feed button, if it is supported by the module. PrintModule.Action: This is the printer icon allowing the users to print the content of the module. Yes, this is the second way of adding it as we already have the PRINTMODULE token. ModuleSettings.Action: This is a button/link which takes you to the settings of the module. ModuleHelp.Action—This is a help question mark icon/link that we've seen in the preceding screenshots. Adding to the container Now that we know what can be added, let's add them to our new container. We'll start off with the HTM file and then move on to the CSS file. In our HTM file, add the following code. Go ahead, parse the skin package and apply our FirstSkin container. Go to the Home page. It may not be pretty, but pretty is not what we were looking for. This container, as it sits, gives us a better illustration of how each token is displayed with a convenient label beside each. There are a few things to point out here, besides we'll be taking out our handy labels and putting in some structure. Our module has no icon, so we won't see one here. If you go to the administrative pages, you will see the icon. The LINKACTIONS is a skin object that you'll use if you don't want to use the action menu ([ACTIONS]). Table Structure The structure of our container will be quite similar to how we laid out our skin. Let's start off with a basic table layout. We'll have a table with three rows. The first row will be for the header area which will contain things like the action menu, the title, icon, and so forth. The second row will be for the content. The third row will be for the footer items, like the printer and edit icon/links. Both the header and footer rows will have nested tables inside to have independent positioning within the cells. The DisplayIcon attribute is a Boolean (true/false or yes/no) value indicating whether or not the icon is displayed; the DisplayLink is similar and used for setting if the text is used as a link. A good example of both is the EditText ([ACTIONBUTTON:1]) in our Text/HTML module on the Home page. Notice that it has both the icon and the text as links to add/edit the content of the module.

Tracking user activity The name of this module is slightly misleading. It allows you to view the recent contributions of a user to the site. One particular use for it, is that if one user found a particular user's posts interesting (perhaps, they both owned troublesome T-Rexes!), they could view the user's track page, and look for other contributions from that user which they might be interested in. This is only one way of interaction though, as opposed to two users interacting with each other. Settings and rules Within User management, we have three areas that we are yet to cover. They are: Access rules Gravatar User settings Let's look at these now. Access rules With the access rules, we can explicitly permit or prohibit certain usernames, email addresses, or hosts (computers) from accessing or joining our social networking site. There are quite a few different reasons why we may wish to do this. Let's take a look at a few specific examples: Disposable email addresses Perhaps all accounts originating from a free email provider should be blocked, except for one or two individual exceptions We may wish to prohibit swear words from our users' usernames Blocking email domains To block an entire email domain such as pookmail.com or hotmail.com, we would create two rules, both with Deny as the access type and E-Mail as the Rule type, and then %@ followed by their respective domain names. The % character tells the rule to match anything that comes before the @ symbol With an exception If we want to block all hotmail.com e-mail addresses except our friend's, our.friend@hotmail.com, then we would create an allow rule for this account. Preventing swear words in our user's usernames Creating rules with Username as the Rule type and the swear word (with a % on either side) will prevent such usernames from being registered. Checking rules The Check rules link at the top of the access rules page, allows us to check these rules by entering a username, email address, or hostname to see if that would be permitted or prohibited on our site. Be careful! If you add certain "bad words" with the wildcard (%) character on both sides, you can prevent some genuine signups; so this should be used only for extreme words. User settings From here, we can configure the registration requirements of our users, email templates used for new accounts and so on, and users' picture settings. User registration settings We can determine what security precautions should be taken when a new account is registered. New accounts: Can only be created by an administrator Can be created by a visitor, but require administrator approval Can be created by a visitor without administrator approval and in addition to the previous two, require user email verification Requiring email verification is a good idea. It is the very first and most basic method to help prevent spam and abusive user accounts. The User registration guidelines box can be used to provide some help for our users, and perhaps a link to some legal terms and conditions to help protect ourselves from liability. User email settings Users will often receive an email from our site automatically when: We create a new account for them They create an account They create an account which is pending our approval They request a new password They need to verify their email addresses Their accounts have been blocked Their accounts have been deleted The User e-mail settings area allows us to change the contents of these emails. Click on Administer | User management | User settings | User e-mail settings further down the page. Selecting an email allows us to change the template. Within these templates, there are tokens that are replaced with specific information when they are sent, for example, the user's username or a specific link. So it is important to ensure that these are still in the template. These variables are clearly defined when editing the template. They are all listed under the template name, each of them starting with an explanation mark, for example. !username for the username, !login_uri for the link to the log in page.

Working with Chat Portlet For the purpose of this article, we will use an intranet website called book.com  which is created  for a fictions company named "Palm Tree Publications". In order to let employees enjoy chatting and instant messaging with others, we should use the Liferay Chat portlet. Let's experience how to enjoy chatting and instant messaging first. As an administrator of "Palm Tree Publications", you need to create a Page called "Instant Messaging" under the Page, "Community", at the Book Lovers Community and also add the Chat portlet in the Page, "Instant Messaging". Adding a Participant First of all, log in as "Palm Tree" and do the following: Add a Page called "Instant Messaging" under the Page, "Community" at the Book Lovers Community Public Pages, if the Page is not already present. Add the Chat portlet in the Page, "Instant Messaging" of the Book Lovers Community where you want to set up chatting and an instant messaging environment, if Chat portlet is not already present. After adding the Chat portlet, you can view it as shown in the following figure. Then, we need to add a participant in the Chat portlet. As an editor at the Editorial department, "Lotti Stein" wants to ping the manager, "David Berger", online and further share some comments about Liferay books. Let's do it as follows: Login as "Lotti Stein" first. Go to the Page, "Instant Messaging", " under the Page, "Community", at the Book Lovers Community Public Pages. Click on the Add icon. Input a participant's email address, such as "david@book.com". Press the Enter key. You will see the participant's full name appear, such as "David Berger". After adding more participants, such as "John Stuckia" and "Rolf Hess", you can view all participants as shown in the following figure. Managing Participants All the Users you've invited will appear as a list of participants. If the User "David Berger" is online ,then the icon to the left of the User name becomes light blue. Otherwise, it remains light gray; for example, User "John Stuckia". As shown in the following figure, only two Users ("David Berger" and "Lotti Stein") are online in the server. For details about OpenFire, refer to the forthcoming section. The participants are removable. For example, "Lotti Stein" wants to remove a participant "Rolf Hess", from the list of participants. Let's do it as follows: Locate the participant, such as "Rolf Hess". Click on the icon to the left of the User name, such as "Rolf Hess". You will see that the participant "Rolf Hess" is highlighted. Click the Remove icon. This participant will be removed from the list of participants. In short, to remove a User from the list of participants, simply locate the User you want to remove by clicking on the icon to the left of the User name. Then, click the Remove icon. The selected User name will be removed from the list of participants. Starting Chatting Irrespective of whether the participants are online or not, you can begin to Chat with them. For example, as an editor of editorial department, "Lotti Stein" wants to start chatting with the manager, "David Berger". Let's do it as follows: Locate the participant, "David Berger". Click the User name, "David Berger". A Chat box will appear. Input the message, "David, how are you?" Press the Enter key. Your messages will appear starting with the keyword, Me, in the message box (as shown in the following figure). As a manager of the editorial department, "David Berger" will have to do the following, to receive the messages from "Lotti Stein": Login as "David Berger" in new browser. Go to the Page, "Instant Messaging" under the Page, "Community" at the Book Lovers Community Public Pages. Locate the participant, "Lotti Stein". Click the User name, "Lotti Stein". A chat box will appear with the messages from "Lotti Stein". Input the message, "I am fine, and you?" Press the Enter key. Your messages will appear starting with the keyword "Me:" in the message box and the messages sent by the other User, "Lotti Stein" here, will appear starting with the User's name as shown in the following figure: Generally, to start chat, locate the User you want to chat with, by the User name first. Click on the User name link. A Chat box will appear. You can chat with many Users at the same time. To do this, just click on the Users' name link. Each Chat box is only for one unique User. The Chat box contains the User's name on the upper left. You can close the current Chat box by clicking on the mark X to the upper right. Note that the Chat box is hidden in your current Page initiatively. Whenever a new message comes from the User, you are chatting with, the Chat box will pop up with the new message and possible previous messages. To send messages, simply input your messages in the message input box first, and then press the Enter key. Your messages will appear starting with the keyword, Me, in the message box, and the messages sent by the other Users will appear starting with their User names.

Documenting web applications Documenting an entire web application can be surprisingly tricky because of the many different layers involved. Some web application frameworks support automatic documentation generation better than others. It's preferable to have fewer disparate parts. For example, Lisp, Smalltalk, and some Ruby frameworks are little more than internal DSLs that can be trivially redefined to produce documentation from the actual application code. In general, Java frameworks are more difficult to limit to a single layer. Instead, we are confronted with HTML, JSP, JavaScript, Java, the framework itself, its configuration methodologies (XML, annotations, scripting languages, etc.), the service layers, business logic, persistence layers, and so on? Complete documentation generally means aggregating information from many disparate sources and presenting them in a way that is meaningful to the intended audience. High-level overviews The site map is obviously a reasonable overview of a web application. A site map may look like a simple hierarchy chart, showing a simple view of a site's pages without showing all of the possible links between pages, how a page is implemented, and so on. This diagram was created by hand and shows only the basic outline of the application flow. It represents minor maintenance overhead since it would need to be updated when there are any changes to the application. Documenting JSPs There doesn't seem to be any general-purpose JSP documentation methodology. It's relatively trivial to create comments inside a JSP page using JSP comments or a regular Javadoc comment inside a scriptlet. Pulling these comments out is then a matter of some simple parsing. This may be done by using one of our favorite tools, regular expressions, or using more HTML-specific parsing and subsequent massaging. Where it gets tricky is when we want to start generating documentation that includes elements such as JSP pages, which may be included using many different mechanisms—static includes, <jsp:include.../> tags, Tiles, SiteMesh, inserted via Ajax, and so on. Similarly, generating connections between pages is fraught with custom cases. We might use general-purpose HTML links, Struts 2 link tags, attach a link to a page element with JavaScript, ad infinitum/nauseum. When we throw in the (perhaps perverse) ability to generate HTML using Java, we have a situation where creating a perfectly general-purpose tool is a major undertaking. However, we can fairly easily create a reasonable set of documentation that is specific to our framework by parsing configuration files (or scanning a classpath for annotations), understanding how we're linking the server-side to our presentation views, and performing (at least limited) HTML/JSP parsing to pull out presentation-side dependencies, links, and anything that we want documented. Documenting JavaScript If only there was a tool such as Javadoc for JavaScript. The JsDoc Toolkit provides Javadoc-like functionality for JavaScript, with additional features to help handle the dynamic nature of JavaScript code. Because of the dynamic nature, we (as developers) must remain diligent in both in how we write our JavaScript and how we document it. Fortunately, the JsDoc Toolkit is good at recognizing current JavaScript programming paradigms (within reason), and when it can't, provides Javadoc-like tags we can use to give it hints. For example, consider our JavaScript Recipe module where we create several private functions intended for use only by the module, and return a map of functions for use on the webpage. The returned map itself contains a map of validation functions. Ideally, we'd like to be able to document all of the different components. Because of the dynamic nature of JavaScript, it's more difficult for tools to figure out the context things should belong to. Java is much simpler in this regard (which is both a blessing and a curse), so we need to give JsDoc hints to help it understand our code's layout and purpose. A high-level flyby of the Recipe module shows a layout similar to the following: var Recipe = function () { var ingredientLabel; var ingredientCount; // ... function trim(s) { return s.replace(/^s+|s+$/g, ""); } function msgParams(msg, params) { // ... } return { loadMessages: function (msgMap) { // ... }, prepare: function (label, count) { // ... }, pageValidators: { validateIngredientNameRequired: function (form) { // ... }, // ... } }; }(); We see several documentable elements: the Recipe module itself, private variables, private functions, and the return map which contains both functions and a map of validation functions. JsDoc accepts a number of Javadoc-like document annotations that allow us to control how it decides to document the JavaScript elements. The JavaScript module pattern, exemplified by an immediately-executed function, is understood by JsDoc through the use of the @namespace annotation. /** * @namespace * Recipe module. */ var Recipe = function () { // ... }(); We can mark private functions with the @private annotation as shown next: /** * @private * Trims leading/trailing space. */ function trim(s) { return s.replace(/^s+|s+$/g, ""); } It gets interesting when we look at the map returned by the Recipe module: return /** @lends Recipe */ { /** * Loads message map. * * <p> * This is generally used to pass in text resources * retrieved via <s:text.../> or <s:property * value="getText(...)"/> tags on a JSP page in lieu * of a normalized way for JS to get Java I18N resources * </p> */ loadMessages: function (msgMap) { _msgMap = msgMap; }, // ... The @lends annotation indicates that the functions returned by the Recipe module belong to the Recipe module. Without the @lends annotation, JsDoc doesn't know how to interpret the JavaScript in the way we probably intend the JavaScript to be used, so we provide a little prodding. The loadMessages() function itself is documented as we would document a Java method, including the use of embedded HTML. The other interesting bit is the map of validation functions. Once again, we apply the @namespace annotation, creating a separate set of documentation for the validation functions, as they're used by our validation template hack and not directly by our page code. /** * @namespace * Client-side page validators used by our template hack. * ... */ pageValidators: { /** * Insures each ingredient with a quantity * also has a name. * * @param {Form object} form * @type boolean */ validateIngredientNameRequired: function (form) { // ... Note also that we can annotate the type of our JavaScript parameters inside curly brackets. Obviously, JavaScript doesn't have typed parameters. We need to tell it what the function is expecting. The @type annotation is used to document what the function is expected to return. It gets a little trickier if the function returns different types based on arbitrary criteria. However, we never do that because it's hard to maintain. JsDoc has the typical plethora of command-line options, and requires the specification of the application itself (written in JavaScript, and run using Rhino) and the templates defining the output format. An alias to run JsDoc might look like the following, assuming the JsDoc installation is being pointed at by the ${JSDOC} shell variable: alias jsdoc='java -jar ${JSDOC}/jsrun.jar ${JSDOC}/app/run.js -t=${JSDOC}/templates/jsdoc' The command line to document our Recipe module (including private functions using the -p options) and to write the output to the jsdoc-out folder, will now look like the following: jsdoc -p -d=jsdoc-out recipe.js The homepage looks similar to a typical JavaDoc page, but more JavaScript-like: A portion of the Recipe module's validators, marked by a @namespace annotation inside the @lends annotation of the return map, looks like the one shown in the next image (the left-side navigation has been removed): We can get a pretty decent and accurate JavaScript documentation using JsDoc, with only a minimal amount of prodding to help with the dynamic aspects of JavaScript, which is difficult to figure out automatically. Documenting interaction Documenting interaction can be surprisingly complicated, particularly in today's highly-interactive Web 2.0 applications. There are many different levels of interactivity taking place, and the implementation may live in several different layers, from the JavaScript browser to HTML generated deep within a server-side framework. UML sequence diagrams may be able to capture much of that interactivity, but fall somewhat short when there are activities happening in parallel. AJAX, in particular, ends up being a largely concurrent activity. We might send the AJAX request, and then do various things on the browser in anticipation of the result. More UML and the power of scribbling The UML activity diagram is able to capture this kind of interactivity reasonably well, as it allows a single process to be split into multiple streams and then joined up again later. As we look at a simple activity diagram, we'll also take a quick look at scribbling, paper, whiteboards, and the humble digital camera. Don't spend so much time making pretty pictures! One of the hallmarks of lightweight, agile development is that we don't spend all of our time creating the World's Most Perfect Diagram™. Instead, we create just enough documentation to get our points across. One result of this is that we might not use a $1,000 diagramming package to create all of our diagrams. Believe it or not, sometimes just taking a picture of a sketched diagram from paper or a whiteboard is more than adequate to convey our intent, and is usually much quicker than creating a perfectly-rendered software-driven diagram. Yes, the image above is a digital camera picture of a piece of notebook paper with a rough activity diagram. The black bars here are used to indicate a small section of parallel functionality, a server-side search and some activity on the browser. The browser programming is informally indicated by the black triangles. In this case, it might not even be worth sketching out. However, for moderately more complicated usage cases, particularly when there is a lot of both server- and client-side activity, a high-level overview is often worth the minimal effort. The same digital camera technique is also very helpful in meetings where various documentation might be captured on a whiteboard. The resulting images can be posted to a company wiki, used in informal specifications, and so on.

Comments are an important part of most of the blogs. While you are the only person who can write blog posts, the visitors to your blog can add comments to your posts. This can fuel a sense of community within a blog, allow people to give you feedback on your writing, and give your visitors a way to help or talk to other visitors. The only downside of commenting is that unscrupulous people will try to misuse your blog's ability to accept comments, and will try to post spam or advertisements in your blog instead of relevant comments. Luckily, the WordPress community is always developing more ways of fighting spam. Adding a comment If you look at the front page of your blog, you'll see that every post has a link that says No Comments » at the bottom. Clicking on that link will take you to the bottom of the post page, which is where comments can be added: If you're logged into the WP Admin, you'll see your name and a space where to write your comment. If you're not logged in, you'll see a comment form that any other visitor will see. This form includes fields to fill in for name, email, and website, along  with the commenting text area. Once you type in the required information and click on the Submit Comment button, the comment will get entered into the WordPress database along with all of your other blog information. How soon it shows up on the site depends on your discussion settings. Discussion settings In the screenshot above, notice that Name and Mail are both marked as (required). As the owner of this blog, you can change the requirements for post comments. First, log in to the WP Admin and navigate to Settings | Discussion. The first box is the Default article settings in which we have options for allowing the comment box and trackback and pingbacks box. If you want either or both of these boxes to be unchecked by default, you can uncheck either or both of the boxes labeled Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) and Allow people to post comments on the article. Submission, notification, and moderation settings Let's take a look at the next three boxes: The boxes you check in these sections will determine how much moderation and checking a comment has to go through before it gets posted on the blog. In the screenshot we just saw, the settings shown are the default settings, which are pretty strict. The only way to make a more strictly controlled discussion on your blog is to check An administrator must always approve the comment. This option means that no matter what, all comments go into the moderation queue and do not show up on the site till you manually approve them. Let's look at the settings having to do with submission. These two options, which are in the Other comment settings box, control what the user has to do before he or she is even able to type in a comment: Comment author must fill out name and e-mail As you noticed in the screenshot in the Adding a comment section, Name and Mail are marked (required). If you leave this checked, then anyone posting a comment will encounter an error if they try to leave either of the fields blank. This doesn't add a huge amount of security because robots know how to fill out a name and an email, and because anyone can put fake information in there. However, it does help your blog readers to keep a track of who is who if a long discussion develops, and it can slightly discourage the utterly impulsive commenting. Users must be registered and logged in to comment Most bloggers do not check this box because it means that only visitors who register for the blog can comment. Most bloggers don't want random people registering, and most visitors don't want to be compelled to register for your blog. If you check this box, there's a good chance you'll get no comments (which may be what you want). Or, if you're setting up a blog for a closed community of people, this setting might be useful. Now let's look at the settings that have to do with moderation. These two options, which have to do with the circumstances that allow comments to appear on the site, are in the Before a comment appears box: An administrator must always approve the comment As I mentioned before, if this box is checked, every comment has to be manually approved by you before it appears on the site. Comment author must have a previously approved comment If you uncheck the box above this, but check this one, then you've relaxed your settings a little bit. This means that if the person commenting has commented before and had his or her comment approved, then the person's future comments don't have to be verified by you; they'll just appear on the website immediately. The person just has to enter the same name and email as the previously approved comment. Now let's look at the settings that have to do with notification. These two options are in the Email me whenever box. These options are related to the circumstances of receiving an email notification about the comment activity. Anyone posts a comment This is generally a good setting to keep. You'll get an email whenever anyone posts a comment—whether or not it needs to be moderated. This will make it easier for you to follow the discussion on your blog, and to be quickly aware of a comment that is not moderated and requires deletion. A comment is held for moderation If you're not particularly interested in following every comment on your blog, you can uncheck the Anyone posts a comment checkbox and only leave this one checked. You won't get an email about legitimate-looking comments that don't appear to need moderation, but only those that need your approval. The remaining settings, which are all in the Other comment settings box, have to do with comment display and are pretty self-explanatory. You won't be able to see many of these settings in action until you have lots of comments. When to moderate or blacklist a comment If you scroll down the page a bit, you'll see the Comment Moderation box: This is an extension of the moderation settings from the top of the page. Note that if you've checked the An administrator must approve the comment checkbox, you can safely ignore this Comment Moderation box. Otherwise, you can use this box to help WordPress figure out which comments are probably OK and which might be spam or inappropriate for your blog. You can tell WordPress to suspect a comment if it has more than a certain number of links, as spam comments often are just a list of URLs. The larger box is for you to enter suspect words and IP addresses: Here you can type words that are commonly found in spam (you can figure this out by looking in your junk mail in your email!), or just uncouth words in general. The IP addresses you will enter into this box would be those of any comments you've gotten in the past from someone who comments inappropriately or adds actual spam. Whenever WordPress receives a comment on your blog, it captures the IP address for you so that you'll have them handy. Scroll down a bit more and you'll see the Comment Blacklist box: Unlike the Comment Moderation box we just saw, which tells WordPress how to identify the comments to suspect, the Comment Blacklist box tells WordPress how to identify comments that are almost definitely bad. These comments won't be added to the moderation queue and you won't get an email about them; they'll be marked right away as spam. Avatar display settings The final box on this page is the Avatars box: An avatar is an image that is a person's personal icon. Visitors who are very active on the Internet and comment frequently may have set up an avatar that they like to use. If so, it will show up on your blog if you leave the Show Avatars radio button checked. The second box, Maximum Rating, will tell WordPress if it should not show avatars that have been rated too highly. The third box, Default Avatar, tells WordPress what avatar to use for visitors who do not come with their own avatar. When you installed WordPress, it created a comment for you on the first post, and also created a default avatar for you. You can see the default avatar, Mystery Man, at use on the Hello World! post: Moderating comments Now that we've thoroughly explored the settings for which comments need to be moderated, let's discuss what you actually need to do to moderate comments. Moderating means that you look over a comment that is in limbo and decide whether it's good or bad. If it's good, it gets to appear on the website; and if it is bad, it's either marked as spam or is deleted and is never seen by anyone but you and the poster who wrote it. To view comments waiting for moderation, log in to your WP Admin and navigate to Comments in the main menu. If you have any comments waiting for moderation, there will be a little orange number in the main menu telling you how many comments await moderation. This Edit Comments page is fully featured, just like the Edit Posts page. For each comment, you see the following information from left to right: Comment text, along with links to Approve it so that it shows up on the site, mark it as Spam, Delete it, Edit it, Quick Edit it, or Reply to it Commenter name, avatar, email address, and IP Comment submission time and date The title of the post on which the comment was made (which is also a link to edit that post), a number in parentheses indicating how many approved comments are already there on that post (which is also a link that will filter the comments list so that it shows only comments on this page), and a link to the post itself (indicated with a hash #) Comments that are awaiting moderation have a yellow background. You can click on the Quick Edit link for any post to open form fields right within this list. This will allow you to edit the text of the post and the commenter's name, email, and URL. You can use the links at the top—All, Pending, Approved, and Spam—to filter the list based on those statuses. You can also filter either only pings or comments with the Show all comment types pull-down filter menu. You can check one or more comments to apply any of the bulk actions available in the Bulk Actions menus at the top and bottom of the list. Another quick way to get to this page, or to apply an action to a comment, is to use the links in the email WordPress sends you when a comment is held for moderation. How to eliminate comment spam Comment spam are comments that get posted on your blog that have spam content, just like spam email. If you've set up your moderation settings to be relatively secure, then these comments won't appear on your blog. However, you may get dozens of email a day from WordPress asking you to moderate comments that it knows need moderation, but doesn't know are spam. The best tool available for eliminating comment spam from your blog is the Akismet plugin. This plugin, which comes (though inactive) with your WordPress installation, utilizes the Akismet spam-fighting service. Now, we'll review how to get Akismet working on your blog. Getting a WordPress.com API key The Akismet plugin requires that you have a WordPress.com API key. To get one, you have to create an account at WordPress.com, even if you don't have a blog there. Once your account is active, log in to WordPress.com and use the menu at the very top to go to your profile: When you are on the Your Profile page, you'll see your WordPress.com API key right at the top: Select and copy that text. You may want to paste it into a text file to be sure you have it. Activating Akismet  Now go back to your WordPress installation and navigate to Plugins in the main menu: You'll see Akismet listed as the first plugin. Click on the Activate link. A yellow message bar will appear at the top of the page that says Akismet is almost ready. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work. Click on that link and you'll be taken to a page where you can enter your API key you have copied from WordPress.com: Paste your API key into the box. I suggest you also check the box below it about automatically discarding spam comments. Akismet is very good at identifying which comments are actually spam, and checking this box will make them disappear. However, if you're concerned about Akismet misidentifying comments, leave this unchecked. Now click on Update options>> and your blog is protected from comment spam!
