[Read the first part of this article here] Now you can click on the Preview Data… hyperlink which opens up the Preview Data window as shown in Figure 19. The Select an object to preview field gets populated automatically to run the getData () method. When you click on the Preview button, the grey area is populated by a table showing the retrieved rows of data from the Customers table as shown in Figure 19. Figure 19 Click on the Close button in the above window. In the various tasks of the DataGridView many options are chosen by default. You may also check reordering of the column by placing a check mark in the Edit Column Reordering in Figure 18 which opens Edit Columns window as shown in Figure 20, another useful control to manipulate the columns so that the columns you want to see are the first few columns. Figure 20 You may want to edit the columns and change some of the items such as reordering of the columns, column name, column width, etc. All this can be done from this screen. For this tutorial only the columns width was changed. A label was added and its text was changed to, "Demo 10 Database Customers" as shown in Figure 21. Now when the program is run by clicking the Debug --> Start without debugging, or by pressing Ctrl+F5, the program runs and Form1 is displayed as shown in Figure 22. Making a Change For the next few months, the Center of Excellence paid off. Projects were identifying services early in the lifecycle. Those same projects were successfully identifying other potential consumers of these new services. Implementation technologies were being chosen correctly and interface design was being properly done. Most importantly, everyone felt the SOA effort was on track. By this time, it had been almost two years since Spencer's team developed the Customer Information Service for the auto insurance and home insurance divisions. While these two groups were very happy with the results, no additional teams had leveraged it. Outside of the annuity project, this wasn't a case of projects going in another direction; it was more due to lack of opportunities. That was about to change. Spencer was eating lunch in the cafeteria when Ramesh walked up. "Mind if I join you, Spencer?" "Hey Ramesh, it's been quite some time. Go ahead and pull up a chair." "Do you remember two years ago you tried to convince Ryan to use your Customer Information Service?" "I sure do. I didn't want to show my face in the annuity area for about a month after that. He really wasn't very receptive to the idea." "Well, I have some good news and some better news for you. The good news is that about six months later, Ryan decided to leave Advasco. The better news is that we've now got a major initiative to revamp a number of our systems in the annuity department. I'd like to take advantage of the Customer Information Service as part of that effort." "That's good news Ramesh. I didn't harbor any resentment towards Ryan, but I'm certainly happy about having another potential consumer for the Customer Information Service. I'll put you in touch with the service manager for it." "Thanks Spencer. That would be great. We're just getting started on our architecture, so the timing is perfect." "Let me know if you run into any problems. I'm still part of the SOA Center of Excellence, so it's still my job to make sure it goes well!" Spencer put Ramesh in contact with the service manager for the Customer Information Service, Maria. Maria had recently transferred over after her work on the account maintenance effort, and now had responsibilities for the Customer Information Service. In the meeting with Ramesh, she brought her technical lead, Craig, with her "Spencer told me that you're interested in utilizing the Customer Information Service in some of the new systems you're building in the annuity department, Ramesh." "That's right. We're rewriting a number of our systems, and based on what I remembered from Spencer two years ago, I thought we might be able to leverage the service." "Great, I'd be happy to help you out. This is Craig, the technical lead who covers the Customer Information Service. He's here if you've got any technical questions. Have you had a chance to review the information available in the service repository?" "I have. I reviewed the service interface, and while it certainly looks like there's enough there to warrant using the service rather than building our own, there's also a number of additional things that we'll need." Craig responded, "What kind of changes are you looking for? Are there new operations that you need that are specific to the annuity area?" Ramesh said, "There are two or three operations that we'd like to see, but most of the changes are actually in the message schemas for the existing operations. There are some additional attributes that we need, and some of the relationships between the attributes are different in our representation." For the rest of the meeting, Ramesh and Craig went through the changes that Ramesh wanted to be made to accommodate his needs. In the end, it was clear that some changes to the existing schemas would have to be made. Maria asked, "We're going to need to go back and look over these changes, along with the integration approach for your existing database. What does the schedule for your efforts currently look like?" Ramesh replied, "We're still in the initial stages of planning, which is why I wanted to make sure I talked to you now. Right now, the project sponsors would like to have something within six months, but they also know that nine months is far more likely. Since I have some flexibility in my schedule, why don't you take a week to look into the effort required for the changes, and let's work out the schedule then. Does that work for you?" "That works for me. We'll get back to you next week with what we think it will take to implement the changes." On the way back to their desks, Craig commented to Maria, "You know, while I don't have any concerns about getting the work done for Ramesh, I do have some concerns on how these changes are going to impact our existing consumers. Some of these changes are going to break the existing interfaces." Maria said, "That is a concern. I know that there aren't any resources available to do any work on the home insurance side of things. Any suggestions on how we should handle this?" Craig said, "Well, we definitely should make the existing consumers aware that a change is going to be made and at least get a clear idea of what the impact will be. If you can take care of that, I can take this to Spencer and the SOA Center of Excellence, and see what suggestions they have." "That sounds like a good plan to me," replied Maria Over the next week, the Customer Information Service team did the analysis required to estimate how long the changes would take to implement. Maria used the communication features of the service registry/repository to push out a message to the existing consumers about the pending change, and as she suspected, the biggest problem was going to be the home insurance system. Due to other priorities, the earliest they could even begin to make changes to their consumer would be nine months from now, potentially three months after the service needed to go live. Craig met with Spencer and explained the problem to him. Spencer agreed to facilitate a decision-making session to explore the different options. Representatives from all of the existing consumers were there, along with Ramesh, Craig, and Maria Spencer started the meeting, "I'm sure all of you saw the notification from Maria last week that some changes are necessary to the Customer Information Service in order to support its usage by the annuity department. The problem that we face is that these changes will break the existing consumers of the service, and not all of you can make the changes to your systems in the currently proposed timeframe. Let's start out by listing all possible options, regardless of whether we all presently agree or disagree on their viability." Craig started out, "Well, if we're listing all possible options, the first one is toupdate the service, and then get whatever push we need from management to get resources allocated to the consuming systems so they can make the changes in the time required." Maria replied, "Come on Craig, you know that we can't just pull resources off projects that easily." Jason, from the auto insurance department, added, "Aren't all of these changes a result of the annuity department? Why can't they just include modifying our applications within their project scope? They already have resources allocated to their project." Paul, from the home insurance department, replied, "Do you really want some developers that have never seen your application before mucking around in your code? I know I don't." Spencer said, "Let's remember, we're listing all options, regardless of whether we all know that the option won't fly. We want to make sure we've explored all of the options. I'm going to just leave this as one option, since we still wind up with the same result, regardless of where the resources come from. I'll capture the concerns about the option." Paul, from the home insurance group, added, "Okay, here's another option. Why don't we leave the existing service in place, and simply have the annuity project write a new service that just they use. Then, none of us using the existing service would be impacted." Craig replied, "That's true, but isn't that going against everything we're trying to do with SOA? I thought we were trying to avoid redundant implementations of the same capability." Spencer replied, "Duly noted, Craig. Just as with the last option, let's keep it on the board, and I'll make sure that your concerns are captured. Paul, that option actually triggered another one in my mind. In addition to having Maria's team write the new service for the annuity system, why couldn't they also keep the existing version of the service available in production for the rest of you? You can then migrate as your schedules allow." Paul and Jason both replied in tandem, "That would work for us!" Maria jumped into the conversation, "While I'm sure it would, that sets a very dangerous precedent for my team. How many versions of the service are we going to have to maintain? While it's a little bit better when all the implementations are owned by one team, we still have multiple implementations." Jason then asked, "Isn't there a way to make the new service backwards compatible with the messages associated with the old service? That way, Maria's teamwould only have one implementation, but we could each continue to use our existing interface." Spencer replied, "That's a very good question Jason. While we all agree that the service interface needs to change to support the annuity department's requirements, I don't know that any of us have thought about whether we can easily transform messages associated with the previous version to messages that will work with the new version, and vice versa. Craig, you're the one most familiar with the new proposed schemas. Do you think we could leverage XSLT to apply transformations for backward compatibility?" "Yes, I think it's possible. The only concern I have is what impact this will have on the service implementation. Working with XSLT within Java code isn't the easiest thing to do, and as we make future modifications, that's just going to get uglier and uglier." Spencer said, "There's another option for that. A year ago, we put some XML appliances in place for security purposes. I know they have XSLT capabilities and they're already in the request path." Craig replied, "Of all the options, I think that one would work out the best. I really don't like the idea of maintaining multiple versions of the service, and having to maintain all of that XSLT code within the service is only slightly better. Allowing the annuity group to write their own goes against everything we're trying to do with SOA." Spencer said, "Well, we know where Craig stands. Are there any other options that we should look into? No? Well, what does everyone think?" Paul was first, "We know that we're not going to find resources to make the changes in all of the consumers at the same time, so that option is out. Likewise, it doesn't make sense for Ramesh's team to write their own service given our SOA goals, so that one is out, too. As for whether Maria's team maintains two versions of the service or utilizes some transformations somewhere, it really doesn't matter to me. From my perspective, both options give me the freedom to migrate at the time that works best for me." Jason immediately added, "I agree with everything Paul just said." Ramesh then offered his opinion, "Well, I certainly know that I don't want to give up any of my developers to work on Jason's and Paul's systems. We need every developer we can get right now. As for writing our own service, we've already been down that path two years ago, and now we're obviously changing the system again. If we had migrated to the service earlier, it would be one less thing that we had to touch as part of these changes. As long as Maria's team delivers my service on time for my projects, it doesn't matter to me what Maria's team chooses to do on their side." Spencer replied, "Well Maria, it looks like everyone else thinks that we need a solution that will allow all of the consumers to continue to use their existing interfaces or the new one, but the details of how that happens is completely up to you and Craig." Maria said, "Let's not jump to conclusions yet. If I'm going to maintain multiple versions, I need some kind of guarantee that the existing consumers will eventually migrate to the new version. If my team allows continuous use of the old interface for 12 months from the time the new interface goes live, would that be an adequate time to complete whatever modifications are necessary?" Jason and Paul thought about it and decided that this was reasonable. For the past three years, they'd averaged an update every nine months. Maria said, "I'll make sure to remind you, early and often, that the old version and its associated interfaces are going to be decommissioned. In the meantime, I'd like to first get the new version built. I'm going to need to keep both versions around initially just to compare messages. Ramesh's team can begin using the new service, and…" As she was talking, she stopped mid-sentence. Spencer said, "Is there a problem, Maria?" She replied, "Well, I was just thinking, how are we going to avoid having two URL's out there? The existing consumers are using a URL that points to the XML appliances, right? We want to apply transformations to that path. What URL will Ramesh's team use? We don't want to try to apply transformations to their requests." Spencer said, "Fortunately, I don't think we'll need to do that. We'll need to talk to the team that operates the appliances to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that the appliances can apply processing based upon incoming attributes on the message. As long as we can determine which requests came from which consumer based on the message content, we should be able to control when transformations happen, while having all the existing consumers using a single URL. We'll obviously need multiple URLs behind the intermediary, but that will be hidden from the consumers." Maria replied, "Okay, that eases some of my fears. Just make sure you find out quickly whether the appliances can handle it or not. Until we find out, can we set up a simple routing rule so that requests from the annuity group go to the new service, while the old ones stay where they are? That way, Ramesh can use the new service as soon as it is available, and Craig and his team can start working on the transformations for backward compatibility. I'd like to wait and see how that work goes before deciding whether to leave both versions out there for 12 months or to leverage the intermediary. We've never used that functionality before, and I don't want to take a chance on impacting Ramesh's schedule in case we run into difficulty. By keeping both services available in production at first, we can eliminate any dependency between the decommissioning of the old service and Ramesh's schedule." Craig added, "From my point of view, that shouldn't be a problem. I can treat the new version as if it were a completely new service, as long as the intermediary shields the consumers from that change. I will need to check how we can manage both versions at the source code level, though." Maria responded, "Good points, Craig. Taking all of this into account, I think this approach poses the least risk overall." Spencer said, "Then we're all in agreement, right? Maria's team will build a new version of the service according to the new interface, and the old interface will be available for 12 months from the time the new service is deployed. Initially, both versions will be available in production, but Maria can decommission the old service before 12 months are up, so long as the new version can be made backwards compatible via XSLT transformations. Maria will notify all consumers prior to decommissioning the old service, since regression testing will be required to ensure that backward compatibility has been maintained. She will also notify all consumers as we get closer to the 12 month cutoff when the older interface will no longer be supported." Everyone in the meeting agreed with this approach, and the teams went off and made it happen. Craig's team investigated the best way to apply the transformations, testing them using the latest Java libraries, as well as the XML appliances that Advasco had recently installed. They found that the XML appliances performed very well, and kept the programming model of the service very clean. While the Java libraries performed satisfactorily, the resulting programming model was not as clean as the team desired. With the use of the routing rules in the appliance, they were able to remove the older version of the service from production, while still supporting the older messages for the full 12 months as promised.

Why Do We Need Specialist Security Distros?

I talk with Ryan Berens, from Guardian Digital makers of EnGarde Linux, to understand their role in the Linux distribution space. EnGarde is distributed in two flavors -- one of which can be had for gratis. EnGarde is what you'd call a minimalist distribution that you'd install on your server to run critical services. It's also popular for its one-stop WebTool remote administration tool. Mayank Sharma: Why do we need a specialist security distro? Why is this better than the 'adding security apps to an existing distro on the server' approach? Guardian Digital: These platforms exist to fulfill a significant need in the market. Many users want a hardened platform because locking down a system can be both difficult and time-consuming. The challenge of creating a secure foundation requires a holistic view over all of system resources, not only at default settings, but as configurations need to change. Hardened platforms, designed and built with security from the ground up, create a much more streamlined, integrated system that ensures a system can stay secure. Bloated distro's can be very insecure by default and overcoming that initial state won't be as effective as building security in from the ground up to ensure that tools all work together to minimize access to and control over resources. Simply adding a couple applications doesn't mean they necessarily 'play' well with other apps or the OS in order to perform as securely as needed. MS: What is involved in packaging a secure distro? Is there more to it than just packaging firewall and network monitoring apps? GD: So much more. As I said in the previous answer, a strong focus is on integration and default security. There are processes that could be left open to abuse, that would otherwise get overlooked. One simple example is that EnGarde sets the ls command to have the least privilege, and doesn't allow write access to /bin/ls. Ubuntu, for example, allows write access to the command ls by default. If a user isn't aware of this, it could be a hole in their system that can be compromised. The point is that adding apps that provide some kind of security process doesn't by any means address the internal security of the platform and how it interacts with other processes and applications. Sure they help, but using them, and using them securely are two different things. How does the system treat passwords? What tools does it use for ordinary, "non-security" apps? How does it integrate them? Does it use best-practices for secure remote access? So on and so on... MS: What are the main differences between the free Community and the commercial Enterprise releases? GD: Our free community platform is really more of a "bleeding edge" platform. It is a great way for users to set up a secure server and incorporate new and secure functionality, but it isn't always in the kind of stable development that is demanded for a corporate environment. Also, EnGarde Professional comes with our portfolio of secure, business-critical applications - SMS (Secure Mail Suite) for routing and securing email from Spam/Virus's for tens of thousands of users - SurfSecure, our web enforcement filter for corporate networks, and so on. These applications aren't available for the community (and most of the time, they wouldn't need to be, not at that level of scalability). And lastly is the service and support for all users. All implementations of EnGarde Professional are fully supported by our dedicated staff of security specialists, with service options for Installation, Remote Monitoring, custom development and much more. MS: Who would be the Community Edition's primary users? Can I use it as a secure desktop OS? GD: The primary users for our Community Edition are really administrators interested in providing a secure server foundation. EnGarde Community (as well as EnGarde Professional) is solely engineered for server operations. This is not a desktop OS for running spreadsheets or playing music - this is about secure, usable functionality for your servers. Even though the corporate version is recommended, there have been numerous examples where EnGarde Community was implemented in a small office environment. MS: What Package management does EnGarde have? Do you maintain your own repository of software? GD: We utilize RPM and yes we do maintain our own repository. The platform is engineered from the ground up, and this means that we choose secure packages, and then integrate and develop them expressly with security in mind. Creating and Managing User Groups in Joomla! and VirtueMart

User manager In Joomla!, there is one User Manager component from where you can manage the users of that site. However, for the VirtueMart component, there is another  user manager which should be used for the VirtueMart shop. To be clear about  the differences of these two user managers, let us look into both. Joomla! user manager Let us first try Joomla!'s user manager. Go to the Joomla! control panel and click on the User Manager icon or click on Site | User Manager. This brings the User Manager screen of Joomla!: We see that the users registered to the Joomla! site are listed in this screen. This screen shows the username, full name, enabled status, group that the user is assigned to, email of the user, date and time when they last visited, and user ID. From this screen, you may guess that any user can be enabled or disabled by clicking on the icon in the Enabled column. Enabled user accounts show a green tick mark in the Enabled column. For viewing the details of any user, click on that user's name in the Name column. That brings up the User:[Edit] screen: As you see, the User Details section shows some important information about the user including Name, Username, E-mail, Group, and so on. You can edit and change these settings including the password. In the Group selection box, you must select one level. The deepest level gets the highest permission in the system. From this section, you can also block a user and decide whether they will receive system  emails or not. In the Parameters section, you can choose the Front-end Language and Time Zone for that user. If you have created contact items using Joomla!'s Contacts component, you may assign one contact to this user in the Contact Information section. VirtueMart user manager Let us now look into VirtueMart's user manager. From the Joomla! control panel, select Components | VirtueMart to reach the VirtueMart Administration Panel. To view the list of the user's registered to the VirtueMart store, click on Admin | Users. This brings the User List screen: As you can see, the User List screen shows the list of users registered to the shop. The screen shows their username, full name, group the user is assigned to, and their shopper group. In the Group column, note that there are two groups mentioned. One group is without brackets and another is inside brackets. The group name mentioned inside brackets is Joomla!'s standard user groups, whereas the one without brackets is VirtueMart's user group. We are going to learn about these user groups in the  next section. For viewing the details of a user, click on the user's name in Username column. That brings the Add/Update User Information screen: The screen has three tabs: General User Information, Shopper Information, and Order List. The General User Information tab contains the same information which was shown in Joomla!'s user manager's User: [Edit] screen. The Shopper Information tab contains shop related information for the user: The Shopper Information section contains: a vendor to which the user is registered the user group the user belongs to a customer number/ID the shopper group Other sections in this tab are: Shipping Addresses, Bill To Information, Bank Account, and any other section you have added to the user registration or account maintenance form. These sections contain fields which are either available on the registration or account maintenance form. If the user has placed some orders, the Order List tab will list the orders placed by that user. If no order has been placed,  the Order List tab will not be visible. Which user manager should we use? As we can see, there is a difference between Joomla!'s user manager and VirtueMart's user manager. VirtueMart's user manager shows some additional information fields, which are necessary for the operation of the shop. Therefore, whenever you are managing users for your shop, use the user manager in the VirtueMart component, not Joomla!'s user manager. Otherwise, all customer information will not be added or updated. This may create some problems in operating the VirtueMart store. User Groups Do you want to decide who can do what in your shop? There is a very good way for doing that in Joomla! and VirtueMart. Both Joomla! and VirtueMart have some predefined user groups. In both cases, you can create additional groups and assign permission levels to these groups. When users register to your site, you assign them to one of the user groups. Joomla! user groups Let us first look into Joomla! user groups. Predefined groups in Joomla! are  described below: User Group Permissions Public Frontend Registered Users in this group can login to the Joomla! site and view the contents, sections, categories, and the items which are marked only for registered users. This group has no access to content management. Author Users in this group get all the permissions the Registered group has. In addition to that, users in this group can submit articles for publishing, and can edit their own articles. Editor Users of this group have all the above permissions, and also can edit articles submitted by other users. However, they cannot publish the contents. Publisher Users in this group can login to the system and submit, edit, and publish their own content as well as contents submitted by other users. Public Backend Manager Users in this group can login to the administration panel and manage content items including articles, sections, categories, links, and so on. They cannot manage users, install modules or components, manage templates and languages, and access global configurations. Users in this group can access some of the components for which the administrator has given permission. Administrator In addition to content management, users in this group can add a user to Super Administrator group, edit a user, access the global configuration settings, access the mail function, and manage/install templates and language files. Super Administrator Users in this group can access all administration functions. For every site, at least one should be in this group to perform global configurations. You cannot delete a user in this group or move him/her to another group. As you can see, most of the users registering to your site should be assigned to the Registered group. By default, Joomla! assigns all newly registered users to the Registered group. You need to add some users to the Editor or Publisher group if they need to add or publish content to the site. The persons who are managing the shop should be assigned to other Public Backend groups such as Manager, Administrator or Super Administrator. VirtueMart user groups Let us now look into the user groups in VirtueMart. To see the user groups, go to VirtueMart's administration panel and click on Admin | User Groups. This shows the User Group List screen: By default, you will see four user groups: admin, storeadmin, shopper, and demo. These groups are used for assigning permissions to users. Also, note the values in the User Group Level column. The higher the value in this field, the lower the permissions assumed for the group. The admin group has a level value of 0, which means it has all of the permissions, and of course, more than the next group storeadmin. Similarly, storeadmin group has more permissions than the shopper group. These predefined groups are key groups in VirtueMart, and you cannot modify or delete these groups. These groups have the following permissions: Group Permissions admin This group has permissions to use all of the modules except checkout and shop. The admin group does not need these because admin users usually do not shop in their store. storeadmin This group has fewer permissions than admin group. Users in this group can access all the modules except the admin, vendor, shop, and checkout modules. They cannot set the global configurations for the store, but can add and edit payment methods, products, categories, and so on. shopper This group has the least permission among the three key groups. By default, users registered to the shop are assigned to this group. Users in this group can fully access the account module, and can use some functions of the shop, coupon, and checkout modules. demo This is a demo group created by default so that administrators can test and play with it. For most of the shops, these four predefined groups will be enough to implement appropriate permissions. However, in some cases you may need to create a new user group and assign separate permissions to that group. For example, you may want to employ some people as store managers who will add products to the catalog and manage the orders. They cannot add or edit payment methods, shipping methods, or other settings, except product and orders. If you add these people to the storeadmin group then they get more permissions than required. In such situations, a good solution is to create a new group, add selected user accounts to that group, and assign permissions to that group. Creating a new user group For creating a new user group, click on the New button in the toolbar on the User Group List screen. The Repeater control in ASP.NET is a data-bound container control that can be used to automate the display of a collection of repeated list items. These items can be bound to either of the following data sources: Database Table XML File In a Repeater control, the data is rendered as DataItems that are defined using one or more templates. You can even use HTML tags such as <li>, <ul>, or <div> if required. Similar to the DataGrid, DataList, or GridView controls, the Repeater control has a DataSource property that is used to set the DataSource of this control to any ICollection, IEnumerable, or IListSource instance. Once this is set, the data from one of these types of data sources can be easily bound to the Repeater control using itsDataBind() method. However, the Repeater control by itself does not support paging or editing of data. The Repeater control is light weight and does not contain so many features as the DataGrid contains. However, it enables you to place HTML code in its templates. It is great in situations where you need to display the data quickly and format the data to be displayed easily. Using the Repeater Control The Repeater control is a data-bound control that uses templates to display data. It does not have any built-in support for paging, editing, or sorting of the data that is rendered through one or more of its templates. The Repeater control works by looping through the records in your data source and then repeating the rendering of one of its templates called the ItemTemplate, one that contains the records that the control needs to render. To use this control, drag and drop the control in the design view of the web form onto a web form from the toolbox. Refer to the following screenshot: You can also drag and drop the Repeater control from the toolbox onto the source view directly. This is shown in the following screenshot: For customizing the behavior of this control, you have to use the built-in templates that this control comes with. These templates are actually blocks of HTML code. The Repeater control contains the following five templates: HeaderTemplate ItemTemplate AlternatingItemTemplate SeparatorTemplate FooterTemplate The following screenshot shows how a Repeater control looks when populated with data. Note that the templates (Header, Item, Footer, Alternate and Separator) have all been used. The following code snippet is an example of the order in which the templates of the Repeater control are used. <asp:Repeater id="repEmployee" runat="server"><HeaderTemplate>...</HeaderTemplate><ItemTemplate></ItemTemplate><FooterTemplate>...</FooterTemplate></asp:Repeater> When the Repeater control is bound to a data source, the data from the data source is displayed using the ItemTemplate element and any other optional elements, if used. Note that the contents of the HeaderTemplate and the FooterTemplate are rendered once for each Repeater control. The contents of the ItemTemplate are rendered for each record in the control. You can also use the additional AlternatingItemTemplate element after the ItemTemplate element for specifying the appearance of each alternate record. You can also use the SeparatorTemplate element between each record for specifying the separators for the records. Displaying Data Using the Repeater Control This section discusses how we can display data using the Repeater control. As discussed earlier, the Repeater control uses templates for formatting the data that it displays. The following code snippet displays the code in an .aspx file that contains a Repeater control. Note that we would be making use of templates and that the data would be bound to the control from the code-behind file using the DataManager class. The Repeater control is populated with data in the Page_Load event by reusing the DataManager(). Note how the SeparatorTemplate and the AlternatingItemTemplate have been used in the previous code example. Further, the DataBinder.Eval() method has been used to display the values of the corresponding fields from the data container, (in our case, the DataSet instance) in the Repeater control. The FooterTemplate uses the Total Records variable and substitutes its value to display the total number of records displayed by the control. The following is the output on execution. The Header and the Footer templates of the Repeater control are still rendered even if the data source does not contain any data. If you want to suppress their display, you can use the Visible property of the Repeater control and use it to suppress the display of these templates with a simple logic. Here is how you specify the Visible property of this control in your .aspx file to achieve this_Visible="<%# Repeater1.Items.Count > 0 %>"When you specify the Visible property as shown here, the Repeater is made visible only if there are records in your data source.   Displaying Checkboxes in a Repeater Control Let us now understand how we can display checkboxes in a Repeater Control and retrieve the number of checked items. We will use a Button control and a Label control in our page. When you click on the Button control, the number of checked items in the Repeater Control will be displayed in the Label control. The output on execution is similar to what is shown in the following screenshot: Here is the code that we will use in the .aspx file to display checkboxes in a Repeater control. The data is bound to the Repeater control in the Page_Load event as follows: Note that we have used the Page.IsPostBack to check whether the page has posted back in the Page_Load method. If you don't bind data by checking whether the page has posted back, the Repeater control will be rebound to data once again after a postback and all the checkboxes in your web page will be reset to the unchecked state. The source code for the click event of the Button control that we have used is as follows: When you execute the application, the Repeater control is displayed with records from the employee table. Now you check one or more of the checkboxes and then click on the Button control just beneath the Repeater control as follows: Note that the number of checked records is displayed in the Label Control. Summary This article discussed the Repeater control and how we can use it in ourASP.NET applications. Though this control does not support all the functionalities of other data controls, like DataGrid and GridView, it is still a good choice if you want faster rendering of data as it is light weight, and is very flexible.

The Core Database Much of the data we see in Joomla! is stored in the database. A base installation has over thirty tables. Some of these are related to core extensions and others to the inner workings of Joomla!. There is an official database schema, which describes the tables created during the installation. For more information, please refer to: http://dev.joomla.org/ component/option,com_jd-wiki/Itemid,31/id,guidelines:database/. A tabular description is available at: http://dev.joomla.org/downloads/Joomla15_DB-Schema.htm. We access the Joomla! database using the global JDatabase object. The JDatabase class is an abstract class, which is extended by different database drivers. There are currently only two database drivers included in the Joomla! core, MySQL and MySQLi. We access the global JDatabase object using JFactory: $db =& JFactory::getDBO(); Extending the Database When we create extensions, we generally want to store data in some form. If we are using the database, it is important to extend it in the correct way. Table Prefix All database tables have a prefix, normally jos_, which helps in using a single database for multiple Joomla! installations. When we write SQL queries, to accommodate the variable table prefix, we use a symbolic prefix that is substituted with the actual prefix at run time. Normally the symbolic prefix is #__, but we can specify an alternative prefix if we want to. Schema Conventions When we create tables for our extensions, we must follow some standard conventions. The most important of these is the name of the table. All tables must use the table prefix and should start with name of the extension. If the table is storing a specific entity, add the plural of the entity name to the end of the table name separated by an underscore. For example, an items table for the extension 'My Extension' would be called #__myExtension_items. Table field names should all be lowercase and use underscore word separators; you should avoid using underscores if they are not necessary. For example, you can name an email address field as email. If you had a primary and a secondary email field, you could call them email and email_secondary; there is no reason to name the primary email address email_primary. If you are using a primary key record ID, you should call the field id, make it of type integer auto_increment, and disallow null. Doing this will allow you to use the Joomla! framework more effectively. Common Fields We may use some common fields in our tables. Using these fields will enable us to take advantage of the Joomla! framework. Publishing We use publishing to determine whether to display data. Joomla! uses a special field called published, of type tinyint(1); 0 = not published, 1 = published. Hits If we want to keep track of the number of times a record has been viewed, we canuse the special field hits, of type integer and with the default value 0. Checking Out To prevent more than one user trying to edit one record at a time we can check out records (a form of software record locking). We use two fields to do this, checked_out and checked_out_time. checked_out, of type integer, holds the ID of the user that has checked out the record. checked_out_time, of type datetime, holds the date and time when the record was checked out. A null date and a user ID of 0 is recorded if the record is not checked out. Ordering We often want to allow administrators the ability to choose the order in which items appear. The ordering field, of type integer, can be used to number records sequentially to determine the order in which they are displayed. This field does not need to be unique and can be used in conjunction with WHERE clauses to form ordering groups. Parameter Fields We use a parameter field, a TEXT field normally named params, to store additional information about records; this is often used to store data that determines how a record will be displayed. The data held in these fields is encoded as INI strings (which we handle using the JParameter class). Before using a parameter field, we should carefully consider the data we intend to store in the field. Data should only be stored in a parameter field if all of the following criteria are true: Not used for sorting records Not used in searches Only exists for some records Not part of a database relationship Schema Example Imagine we have an extension called 'My Extension' and an entity called foobar. The name of the table is #__myextension_foobars. When we come to define our own tables we must ensure that we use thecorrect data types and NOT NULL, AUTO INC, UNSIGNED and DEFAULT values. The SQL displayed below will create the table described in the above schema: CREATE TABLE `#__myextension_foobars` ( `id` INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `content` TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT '', `checked_out` INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `checked_out_time` DATETIME NOT NULL DEFAULT '0000-00-00 00:00:00', `params` TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT '', `ordering` INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `hits` INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `published` INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, PRIMARY KEY(`id`)) CHARACTER SET `utf8` COLLATE `utf8_general_ci`; Date Fields We regularly use datetime fields to record the date and time at which an action has taken place. When we use these fields, it is important that we are aware of the effect of time zones. All dates and times should be recorded in UTC+0 (GMT / Z). When we come to display dates and times we can use the JDate class. The JDate class allows us to easily parse dates, output them in different formats, and apply UTC time-zone offsets. For more information about time zones, please refer to http://www.timeanddate.com. We often use parsers before we display data to make the data safe or to apply formatting to the data. We need to be careful how we store data that is going to be parsed. If the data is ever going to be edited, we must store the data in its RAW state. If the data is going to be edited extremely rarely and if the parsing is reversible, we may want to consider building a 'reverse-parser'. This way we can store the data in its parsed format, eradicating the need for parsing when we view the data and reducing the load on the server. Another option available tous is to store the data in both formats. This way we only have to parse data when we save it. Dealing with Multilingual Requirements Unlike ASCII and ANSII, Unicode is a multi-byte character set; it uses more than eight bits (one byte) per character. When we use UTF-8 encoding, character byte lengths vary. Unfortunately, MySQL versions prior to 4.1.2 assume that characters are always eight bits (one byte), which poses some problems. To combat the issue when installing extensions we have the ability to define different SQL files for servers, that do and do not support UTF-8. In MySQL servers that do not support UTF-8, when we create fields, which define a character length, we are actually defining the length in bytes. Therefore, if we try to store UTF-8 characters that are longer than one byte, we may exceed the size of the field. To combat this, we increase the length of fields to try to accommodate UTF-8strings. For example, a varchar(20) field becomes a varchar(60) field. We triple the size of fields because, although UTF-8 characters can be more than three bytes, the majority of common characters are a maximum of three bytes. This poses another issue, if we use a varchar(100) field, scaling it up for a MySQL server, which does not support UTF-8, we would have to define it as a varchar(300) field. We cannot do this because varchar fields have a maximum size of 255. The next step is slightly more drastic. We must redefine the field type so as it will accommodate at least three hundred bytes. Therefore, a varchar(100) field becomes a text field. As an example, the core #__content table includes a field named title. For MySQL severs that support UTF-8, the field is defined as: `title` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '' For MySQL severs that do not support UTF-8, the field is defined as: `title` text NOT NULL default '' We should also be aware that using a version of MySQL that does not support UTF-8 would affect the MySQL string handling functions. For example ordering by a string field may yield unexpected results. While we can overcome this using postprocessing in our scripts using the JString class, the recommended resolution is to upgrade to the latest version of MySQL.

Why is Planning Important? Most open source developers see planning as a boring task. Why plan if one can just go and code? The answer is as simple as the question: The "Go and code" approach does not let us create truly optimal code. Portions of code have to be changed while other portions are written. They often lead to redundant code or uninitialized variables, partially covered conditions, and wrong return results. Code gets a "do not touch" reputation because changing anything renders the whole project unstable. Often the code works, but the project is more a failure than a success because it cannot be extended or re-used. Another reason for planning is the ease of bug fixing and the costs associated with it. Open source developers often do not think about it until they start selling their services or work to commercial companies. As shown by recent studies, the cost of problem fixing grows rapidly toward the end of the project. The cost is minimal when development has not started yet, and the person in charge just collects requirements. When requirements are collected and a programmer (or a team of programmers) starts to think how to implement these requirements, a change of requirements, or fixing a problem in the requirements still does not cost much. But it may already be difficult for developers if they came to a certain implementation approach after reviewing requirements. Things become worse at the development stage. Imagine that the selected approach was wrong and it was uncovered close to the end of development. Lots of time is lost, and work may have to start from the beginning. Now imagine what happens if the project is released to the customer and the customer says that the outcome of the project does not work as expected (something was implemented differently (as compared to expectations), or something was not implemented at all). The cost of fixing is likely to be high and overshoot the budget. Next, imagine what would happen if problems occurred when a project went live. After reading the previous paragraph, some developers may ask how the situation applies to non-commercial development, as there is a false perception that there are no costs associated with it (at least, no direct costs). But, the costs exist! And often they are much more sensitive than financial costs. The cost in non-commercial development is reputation. If a developer's product does not work well or does not work at all or it has obvious flaws, the general opinion about the developer may become bad ("cannot trust his code"). Developers will also have troubles improving because often they do not understand what has gone wrong. But the answer is near. Do not rush! Plan it well! You may even think of something about the future code, and then start coding only when the picture is clear. Planning is an important part of software development. While freelancers can usually divide their time freely between planning and implementation, many corporate developers often do not have such freedom. And even worse, many managers still do not see planning as a necessary step in software development. This situation is well explained in The parable of the two programmers, which readers of this book are encouraged to read in full. When it comes to TYPO3, planning is more important than an average application. TYPO3 is very complex, and its implementation is also complex. Without planning, programmers will most likely have to change their already written code to fix unforeseen problems therefore, good planning for TYPO3 extensions is extremely important. But let us move on and see how to plan an extension. How to Plan There are several stages in planning. Typically, each stage answers one or more important questions about development. TYPO3 developers should think about at least three stages: Gathering requirements Implementation planning Documentation planning Of course, each project is unique and has other stages. But these three stages generally exist in every project. Gathering Requirements The first thing that a developer needs to know is what his/her extension will do. While it sounds pretty obvious, not many extension authors know exactly what functionality the extension has in the end. It evolves over time, and often the initial idea is completely different from the final implementation. Predictably, neither the original nor the final is done well. In the other case, when extension features are collected, though planned and implemented according to plan, they usually fit well together. So, the very first thing to do when creating an extension is to find out what that extension should do. This is called gathering requirements. For non-commercial extensions, gathering requirements simply means writing down what each extension should do. For example, for a news extension, it may be: Show list of news sorted by date Show list of latest news Show news archive Show only a small amount of text in news list view As we have seen, gathering requirements looks easier than it actually is. The process, however, may become more complex when an extension is developed for an external customer. Alan Cooper, in his famous About Face book, shows how users, architects, and developers see the same product. From the user's perspective, it looks like a perfect circle. An architect sees something closer to an octagon. A developer creates something that looks like a polygon with many segments connected at different degrees. These differences always exist and each participating party is interested in minimizing them. A developer must not be afraid of asking questions. The cleaner picture he/she has, the better he/she will understand the customer's requirements. Implementation Planning When the requirements are gathered, it is necessary to think which blocks an extension will have. It may be blocks responsible for data fetching, presentation, conversion, and so on. In the case of TYPO3 extension implementation, planning should result in a list of Frontend (FE) plugins, Backend (BE) modules, and standalone classes. The purpose of each plug-in, module, and/or class must be clear. When thinking of FE plugins, caching issues must be taken into account. While most of the output can be cached to improve TYPO3 performance, forms processing should not be cached. Some extensions completely prevent caching of the page when processing forms. But there is a better approach, a separate FE plug-in from the non-cached output. BE modules must take into account the ease of use. Standard BE navigation is not very flexible, and this must be taken into account when planning BE modules. Certain functionalities can be moved to separate classes. This includes common functions and any public APIs that an extension provides to the other extensions. Hooks or "user functions" are usually placed in separate classes depending on the functional zone or hooked class. Documentation Planning A good extension always comes with documentation. Documentation should also be planned. Typically, manuals for extensions are created using standard templates, which have standard sections defined. While this simplifies documentation writing for extension developers, they still have to plan what they will put into these sections. TYPO3-Specific Planning There are several planning issues specific to TYPO3. Developers must take care of them before the actual development. Extension Keys Each extension must have a unique key. Extension keys can be alphanumeric and contain underscore characters. It may not start with a digit, the letter u, or the test_ prefix. However, not every combination of these symbols makes a good extension key. An extension key must be descriptive but not too long. Having personal or company prefixes is not forbidden but is not recommended. Underscores should be avoided. Abbreviations should be avoided as well, because they often do not make sense for other users. Examples of good extension keys are: news comments usertracker loginbox Examples of bad extension keys are: news_extension mycorp_ustr myverygoodextensionthatdoesalotofthings mvgetdalot john_ext div2007 Database Structure Most TYPO3 extensions use a database to load and/or store their own data. Changing the data structure during application development may seriously slow down development, or may even cause damage to data if some data is already entered into the system. Therefore, it is extremely important to think about an extension's data structure well in advance. Such thinking requires knowledge about how TYPO3 database tables are organized. Tables in TYPO3 database must have certain structures to be properly managed by TYPO3. If a table does not fulfill TYPO3 requirements, users may see error messages in the BE (especially in the Web | List module), and data may become corrupted. Every record in every TYPO3 table belongs to a certain page inside TYPO3. TYPO3 has a way to identify which page the record belongs to.

Writing a Package Its intents are: To shorten the time needed to set up everything before starting the real work, in other words the boiler-plate code To provide a standardized way to write packages To ease the use of a test-driven development approach To facilitate the releasing process It is organized in the following four parts: A common pattern for all packages that describes the similarities between all Python packages, and how distutils and setuptools play a central role How generative programming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_programming) can help this through the template-based approach The package template creation, where everything needed to work is set Setting up a development cycle A Common Pattern for All Packages The easiest way to organize the code of an application is to split it into several packages using eggs. This makes the code simpler, and easier to understand, maintain, and change. It also maximizes the reusability of each package. They act like components. Applications for a given company can have a set of eggs glued together with a master egg. Therefore, all packages can be built using egg structures. This section presents how a namespaced package is organized, released, and distributed to the world through distutils and setuptools. Writing an egg is done by layering the code in a nested folder that provides a common prefix namespace. For instance, for the Acme company, the common namespace can be acme. The result is a namespaced package. For example, a package whose code relates to SQL can be called acme.sql. The best way to work with such a package is to create an acme.sql folder that contains the acme and then the sql folder: setup.py, the Script That Controls Everything The root folder contains a setup.py script, which defines all metadata as described in the distutils module, combined as arguments in a call to the standard setup function. This function was extended by the third-party library setuptools that provides most of the egg infrastructure. The boundary between distutils and setuptools is getting fuzzy, and they might merge one day. Therefore, the minimum content for this file is: from setuptools import setupsetup(name='acme.sql') name gives the full name of the egg. From there, the script provides several commands that can be listed with the -help-commands option. $ python setup.py --help-commands Standard commands:  build             build everything needed to install  ...  install           install everything from build directory  sdist         create a source distribution  register      register the distribution  bdist         create a built (binary) distributionExtra commands:  develop       install package in 'development mode'  ...  test          run unit tests after in-place build alias         define a shortcut  bdist_egg     create an "egg" distribution The most important commands are the ones left in the preceding listing. Standard commands are the built-in commands provided by distutils, whereas Extra commands are the ones created by third-party packages such as setuptools or any other package that defines and registers a new command. sdist The sdist command is the simplest command available. It creates a release tree where everything needed to run the package is copied. This tree is then archived in one or many archived files (often, it just creates one tar ball). The archive is basically a copy of the source tree. This command is the easiest way to distribute a package from the target system independently. It creates a dist folder with the archives in it that can be distributed. To be able to use it, an extra argument has to be passed to setup to provide a version number. If you don't give it a version value, it will use version = 0.0.0: from setuptools import setupsetup(name='acme.sql', version='0.1.1' This number is useful to upgrade an installation. Every time a package is released, the number is raised so that the target system knows it has changed. Let's run the sdist command with this extra argument: $ python setup.py sdistrunning sdist...creating disttar -cf dist/acme.sql-0.1.1.tar acme.sql-0.1.1gzip -f9 dist/acme.sql-0.1.1.tarremoving 'acme.sql-0.1.1' (and everything under it)$ ls dist/acme.sql-0.1.1.tar.gz Under Windows, the archive will be a ZIP file. The version is used to mark the name of the archive, which can be distributed and installed on any system having Python. In the sdist distribution, if the package contains C libraries or extensions, the target system is responsible for compiling them. This is very common for Linux-based systems or Mac OS because they commonly provide a compiler. But it is less usual to have it under Windows. That's why a package should always be distributed with a pre-built distribution as well, when it is intended to run under several platforms. The MANIFEST.in File When building a distribution with sdist, distutils browse the package directory looking for files to include in the archive. distutils will include: All Python source files implied by the py_modules, packages, and scripts option All C source files listed in the ext_modules option Files that match the glob pattern test/test*.py README, README.txt, setup.py, and setup.cfg files Besides, if your package is under Subversion or CVS, sdist will browse folders such as .svn to look for files to include .sdist builds a MANIFEST file that lists all files and includes them into the archive. Let's say you are not using these version control systems, and need to include more files. Now, you can define a template called MANIFEST.in in the same directory as that of setup.py for the MANIFEST file, where you indicate to sdist which files to include. This template defines one inclusion or exclusion rule per line, for example: include HISTORY.txtinclude README.txtinclude CHANGES.txtinclude CONTRIBUTORS.txtinclude LICENSErecursive-include *.txt *.py The full list of commands is available at http://docs.python.org/dist/sdist-cmd.html#sdist-cmd. build and bdist To be able to distribute a pre-built distribution, distutils provide the build command, which compiles the package in four steps: build_py: Builds pure Python modules by byte-compiling them and copying them into the build folder. build_clib: Builds C libraries, when the package contains any, using Python compiler and creating a static library in the build folder. build_ext: Builds C extensions and puts the result in the build folder like build_clib. build_scripts: Builds the modules that are marked as scripts. It also changes the interpreter path when the first line was set (!#) and fixes the file mode so that it is executable. Each of these steps is a command that can be called independently. The result of the compilation process is a build folder that contains everything needed for the package to be installed. There's no cross-compiler option yet in the distutils package. This means that the result of the command is always specific to the system it was build on. Some people have recently proposed patches in the Python tracker to make distutils able to cross-compile the C parts. So this feature might be available in the future. When some C extensions have to be created, the build process uses the system compiler and the Python header file (Python.h). This include file is available from the time Python was built from the sources. For a packaged distribution, an extra package called python-dev often contains it, and has to be installed as well. The C compiler used is the system compiler. For Linux-based system or Mac OS X, this would be gcc. For Windows, Microsoft Visual C++ can be used (there's a free command-line version available) and the open-source project MinGW as well. This can be configured in distutils. The build command is used by the bdist command to build a binary distribution. It calls build and all dependent commands, and then creates an archive in the same was as sdist does. The same command called under Windows will create a specific distribution archive: C:acme.sql> python.exe setup.py bdist...C:acme.sql> dir dist25/02/2008  08:18     <DIR>          .25/02/2008  08:18     <DIR>          ..25/02/2008  08:24             16 055 acme.sql-0.1.win32.zip               1 File(s)          16 055 bytes               2 Dir(s)   22 239 752 192 bytes free If a package contains C code, apart from a source distribution, it's important to release as many different binary distributions as possible. At the very least, a Windows binary distribution is important for those who don't have a C compiler installed. A binary release contains a tree that can be copied directly into the Python tree. It mainly contains a folder that is copied into Python's site-packages folder. bdist_egg The bdist_egg command is an extra command provided by setuptools. It basically creates a binary distribution like bdist, but with a tree comparable to the one found in the source distribution. In other words, the archive can be downloaded, uncompressed, and used as it is by adding the folder to the Python search path (sys.path). These days, this distribution mode should be used instead of the bdist-generated one. install The install command installs the package into Python. It will try to build the package if no previous build was made and then inject the result into the Python tree. When a source distribution is provided, it can be uncompressed in a temporary folder and then installed with this command. The install command will also install dependencies that are defined in the install_requires metadata. This is done by looking at the packages in the Python Package Index (PyPI). For instance, to install pysqlite and SQLAlchemy together with acme.sql, the setup call can be changed to: from setuptools import setupsetup(name='acme.sql', version='0.1.1',      install_requires=['pysqlite', 'SQLAlchemy']) When we run the command, both dependencies will be installed. How to Uninstall a Package The command to uninstall a previously installed package is missing in setup.py. This feature was proposed earlier too. This is not trivial at all because an installer might change files that are used by other elements of the system. The best way would be to create a snapshot of all elements that are being changed, and a record of all files and directories created. A record option exists in install to record all files that have been created in a text file: $ python setup.py install --record installation.txtrunning install...writing list of installed files to 'installation.txt' This will not create any backup on any existing file, so removing the file mentioned might break the system. There are platform-specific solutions to deal with this. For example, distutils allow you to distribute the package as an RPM package. But there's no universal way to handle it as yet. The simplest way to remove a package at this time is to erase the files created, and then remove any reference in the easy-install.pth file that is located in the sitepackages folder. develop setuptools added a useful command to work with the package. The develop command builds and installs the package in place, and then adds a simple link into the Python site-packages folder. This allows the user to work with a local copy of the code, even though it's available within Python's site-packages folder. All packages that are being created are linked with the develop command to the interpreter. When a package is installed this way, it can be removed specifically with the -u option, unlike the regular install: $ sudo python setup.py developrunning develop...Adding iw.recipe.fss 0.1.3dev-r7606 to easy-install.pth fileInstalled /Users/repos/ingeniweb.sourceforge.net/iw.recipe.fss/trunkProcessing dependencies ...$ sudo python setup.py develop -urunning developRemoving...Removing iw.recipe.fss 0.1.3dev-r7606 from easy-install.pth file Notice that a package installed with develop will always prevail over other versions of the same package installed. test Another useful command is test. It provides a way to run all tests contained in the package. It scans the folder and aggregates the test suites it finds. The test runner tries to collect tests in the package but is quite limited. A good practice is to hook an extended test runner such as zope.testing or Nose that provides more options. To hook Nose transparently to the test command, the test_suite metadata can be set to 'nose.collector' and Nose added in the test_requires list: setup(...test_suite='nose.collector',test_requires=['Nose'],...) register and upload To distribute a package to the world, two commands are available: register: This will upload all metadata to a server. upload: This will upload to the server all archives previously built in the dist folder. The main PyPI server, previously named the Cheeseshop, is located at http://pypi.python.org/pypi and contains over 3000 packages from the community. It is a default server used by the distutils package, and an initial call to the register command will generate a .pypirc file in your home directory. Since the PyPI server authenticates people, when changes are made to a package, you will be asked to create a user over there. This can also be done at the prompt: $ python setup.py registerrunning register...We need to know who you are, so please choose either: 1. use your existing login, 2. register as a new user, 3. have the server generate a new password for you (and email it toyou), or 4. quitYour selection [default 1]: Now, a .pypirc file will appear in your home directory containing the user and password you have entered. These will be used every time register or upload is called: [server-index]username: tarekpassword: secret There is a bug on Windows with Python 2.4 and 2.5. The home directory is not found by distutils unless a HOME environment variable is added. But, this has been fixed in 2.6. To add it, use the technique where we modify the PATH variable. Then add a HOME variable for your user that points to the directory returned by os.path.expanduser('~'). When the download_url metadata or the url is specified, and is a valid URL, the PyPI server will make it available to the users on the project web page as well. Using the upload command will make the archive directly available at PyPI, so the download_url can be omitted: Distutils defines a Trove categorization (see PEP 301: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0301/#distutils-trove-classification) to classify the packages, such as the one defined at Sourceforge. The trove is a static list that can be found at http://pypi.python.org/pypi?%3Aaction=list_classifiers, and that is augmented from time to time with a new entry. Each line is composed of levels separated by "::": ...Topic :: TerminalsTopic :: Terminals :: SerialTopic :: Terminals :: TelnetTopic :: Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X TerminalsTopic :: Text Editors Topic :: Text Editors :: DocumentationTopic :: Text Editors :: Emacs... A package can be classified in several categories, which can be listed in the classifiers meta-data. A GPL package that deals with low-level Python code (for instance) can use: Programming Language :: PythonTopic :: Software Development :: Libraries :: Python ModulesLicense :: OSI Approved :: GNU General Public License (GPL) Python 2.6 .pypirc Format The .pypirc file has evolved under Python 2.6, so several users and their passwords can be managed along with several PyPI-like servers. A Python 2.6 configuration file will look somewhat like this: [distutils]index-servers =    pypi    alternative-server    alternative-account-on-pypi[pypi]username:tarekpassword:secret[alternative-server]username:tarekpassword:secretrepository:http://example.com/pypi The register and upload commands can pick a server with the help of the -r option, using the repository full URL or the section name: # upload to http://example.com/pypi$ python setup.py sdist upload -r   alternative-server#  registers with default account (tarek at pypi)$ python setup.py register#  registers to http://example.com$ python setup.py register -r http://example.com/pypi This feature allows interaction with servers other than PyPI. When dealing with a lot of packages that are not to be published at PyPI, a good practice is to run your own PyPI-like server. The Plone Software Center (see http://plone.org/products/plonesoftwarecenter) can be used, for example, to deploy a web server that can interact with distutils upload and register commands. Creating a New Command distutils allows you to create new commands, as described in http://docs.python.org/dist/node84.html. A new command can be registered with an entry point, which was introduced by setuptools as a simple way to define packages as plug-ins. An entry point is a named link to a class or a function that is made available through some APIs in setuptools. Any application can scan for all registered packages and use the linked code as a plug-in. To link the new command, the entry_points metadata can be used in the setup call: setup(name="my.command",          entry_points="""             [distutils.commands]             my_command = my.command.module.Class          """) All named links are gathered in named sections. When distutils is loaded, it scans for links that were registered under distutils.commands. This mechanism is used by numerous Python applications that provide extensibility. setup.py Usage Summary There are three main actions to take with setup.py: Build a package. Install it, possibly in develop mode. Register and upload it to PyPI. Since all the commands can be combined in the same call, some typical usage patterns are: # register the package with PyPI, creates a source and# an egg distribution, then upload them$ python setup.py register sdist bdist_egg upload# installs it in-place, for development purpose$ python setup.py develop# installs it$ python setup.py install The alias Command To make the command line work easily, a new command has been introduced by setuptools called alias. In a file called setup.cfg, it creates an alias for a given combination of commands. For instance, a release command can be created to perform all actions needed to upload a source and a binary distribution to PyPI: $ python setup.py alias release register sdist bdist_egg uploadrunning aliasWriting setup.cfg$ python setup.py release... In this article, we recommend that you use the JBoss AS (version 4.2), which is a free J2EE Application Server that can be downloaded from http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/downloads/ (complete documentation can be downloaded from http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/docs/). JBoss AS plug-in and the Eclipse WTP JBoss AS plug-in can be treated as an elegant method of connecting a J2EE Application Server to the Eclipse IDE. It's important to know that JBoss AS plug-in does this by using the WTP support, which is a project included by default in the Eclipse IDE. WTP is a major project that extends the Eclipse platform with a strong support for Web and J2EE applications. In this case, WTP will sustain important operations, like starting the server in run/debug mode, stopping the server, and delegating WTP projects to their runtimes. For now, keep in mind that Eclipse supports a set of WTP servers and for every WTP server you may have one WTP runtime. Now, we will see how to install and configure the JBoss 4.2.2 runtime and server. Adding a WTP runtime in Eclipse In case of JBoss Tools, the main scope of Server Runtimes is to point to a server installation somewhere on your machine. By runtimes, we can use different configurations of the same server installed in different physical locations. Now, we will create a JBoss AS Runtime (you can extrapolate the steps shown below for any supported server): From the Window menu, select Preferences. In the Preferences window, expand the Server node and select the Runtime Environments child-node. On the right side of the window, you can see a list of currently installed runtimes, as shown in the following screenshot, where you can see that an Apache Tomcat runtime is reported (this is just an example, the Apache Tomcat runtime is not a default one). Now, if you want to install a new runtime, you should click the Add button from the top-right corner. This will bring in front the New Server Runtime Environment window as you can see in the following screenshot. Because we want to add a JBoss 4.2.2 runtime, we will select the JBoss 4.2 Runtime option (for other adapters proceed accordingly). After that, click Next for setting the runtime parameters. In the runtimes list, we have runtimes provided by WTP and runtimes provided by JBoss Tools (see the section marked in red on the previous screenshot). Because this article is about JBoss Tools, we will further discuss only the runtimes from this category. Here, we have five types of runtimes with the mention that the JBoss Deploy-Only Runtime type is for developers who start/stop/debug applications outside Eclipse. In this step, you will configure the JBoss runtime by indicating the runtime's name (in the Name field), the runtime's home directory (in the Home Directory field), the Java Runtime Environment associated with this runtime (in the JRE field), and the configuration type (in the Configuration field).In the following screenshot, we have done all these settings for our JBoss 4.2 Runtime. The official documentation of JBoss AS 4.2.2 recommends using JDK version 5. If you don't have this version in the JRE list, you can add it like this: Display the Preferences window by clicking the JRE button. In this window, click the Add button to display the Add JRE window. Continue by selecting the Standard VM option and click on the Next button. On the next page, use the Browse button to navigate to the JRE 5 home directory. Click on the Finish button and you should see a new entry in the Installed JREs field of the Preferences window (as shown in the following screenshot). Just check the checkbox of this new entry and click OK. Now, JRE 5 should be available in the JRE list of the New Server Runtime Environment window. After this, just click on the Finish button and the new runtime will be added, as shown in the following screenshot: From this window, you can also edit or remove a runtime by using the Edit and Remove buttons. These are automatically activated when you select a runtime from the list. As a final step, it is recommended to restart the Eclipse IDE.

MySQL Query Browser, one of the open source MySQL GUI tools from MySQL AB, is used for building MySQL database queries visually. In MySQL Query Browser, you build database queries using just your mouse—click, drag and drop! MySQL Query Browser has plenty of visual query building functions and features. This article shows two examples, building Join and Master-detail queries. These examples will demonstrate some of these functions and features. Join Query A pop-up query toolbar will appear when you drag a table or column from the Object Browser’s Schemata tab to the Query Area. You drop the table or column on the pop-up query toolbar’s button to build your query. The following example demonstrates the use of the pop-up query toolbar to build a join query that involves three tables and two types of join (equi and left outer). Drag and drop the product table from the Schemata to Add Table(s) button. A SELECT query on the product table is written in the Query Area. Drag and drop the item table from Schemata to the JOIN Table(s) button on the Pop-up Query Toolbar. The two tables are joined on the foreign-key, product_code. If no foreign-key relationship exists, the drag and drop won’t have any effect. Drag and drop the order table from Schemata to the LEFT OUTER JOIN button on the Pop-up Query Toolbar. Maximize query area by pressing F11. You get a larger query area, and your lines are sequentially numbered (for easier identification). Move the FROM clause to its next line, by putting your cursor just before the FROM word and press Enter. Similarly, move the ON clause to its next line. Now, you can see all lines completely, and that the item table is left join to the order table on their foreign-key relationship column, the order_number column. As of now our query is SELECT *, i.e. selecting all columns from all tables. Let’s now select the columns we’d like to show at the query’s output. For example, drag and drop the order_number from the item table, product_name from the product table, and then quantity from the item table. (If necessary, expand the table folders to see their columns). The sequence of the selecting the columns is reflected in the SELECT clause (from left to right). Note that you can’t select column from the left join of the order table (if you try, nothing will happen) Next, add an additional condition. Drag and drop the amount column on the WHERE button in the Pop-up Query Toolbar. The column is added, with an AND, in the WHERE clause of the query. Type in its condition value, for example, > 1000. To finalize our query, drag and drop product_name on the ORDER button, and then, order_number (from item table, not order table) on the GROUP button. You’ll see that the GROUP BY and ORDER clauses are ordered correctly, i.e. the GROUP BY clause first before the ORDER BY, regardless of your drag & drop sequence. To test your query, click the Execute button. Your query should run without any error, and display its output in the query area (below the query).

Here, we will see: Steps involved in the authentication and authorization process Learning file authentication and authorization Implementing active directory authentication and authorization Details of policy template Steps Involved in the Authentication and Authorization Process Oracle Web Services Manager can authenticate the web services request by validating the credentials against a data store. The credentials (e.g. username and password, SAML token, certificate, etc.) that are attached to the web services will be validated against the data store, such as the file system, databases, active directory and any LDAP compliant directory. Once authentication is successful, the next step is to perform authorization by validating the username against a set of pre-defined groups which have access to the web service. The following figure shows the process where the user accesses an application which acts as a client for the web service. The client application then attaches the username and password to make the web service request. The username and password are then validated against file system or LDAP directory by Oracle WSM, either using the gateway or the agent. The authentication and authorization against different directory stores can be configured using Oracle WSM policy steps. Oracle Web Services Manager has predefined policy steps for: File Authenticate and Authorize Active Directory Authenticate and Authorize LDAP Authenticate and Authorize In the previous figure, the Oracle WSM Gateway is used to protect the web services and externalize the security. In order to authenticate and authorize requests to web services, the web services can be registered within the gateway and the request pipeline of gateway will validate the credentials and authorize the access before it forwards the request to the actual web service provider. The gateway steps for authentication and authorization can be summarized as: Log incoming request (optional) Extract credentials get the credentials from the SOAP message or HTTP header) Authenticate (file authenticate, active directory authenticate, etc.) Authorize (file authorize, active directory authorize, etc.) Request is forwarded to the web service provider The response from the web service also follows through a similar response pipeline where you can implement the log, encryption of response, or signing, or response, etc. While it is not required to implement any steps in the response pipeline, there should be a response pipeline even if it's doing nothing. Oracle WSM: File Authenticate and Authorize Oracle Web Services MManager can authenticate the web services requests against a file that has the list of usernames and passwords. In this example, the username and password information are part of the SOAP message, however one can also send a username and password as HTTP header, or it can be any XMML data that is a part of the web services message. While file-based authentication can easily be compromised, it is often used as a jump start or testing process to validate the authentication and authorization process. Authentication and authorization of web service requests against a file requires three main steps, and these are described below. There is a default log step which will log all the request and response messages, and you can also include that log step at any point to log messages: Extract Credentials File Authenticate File Authorize The first step to authenticate a web service request against a password file (file authenticate) is to extract the username and password credentials from the SOAP message. The client application attaches the username and password to the SOAP message, as per the UserName token profile. In the policy to authenticate the web service against the file, add the step in the request process to extract credentials. Since this is a web service request, as opposed to HTTP post, configure the Credentials location to WS-BASIC (refer to the following screenshot). Note: WS-BASIC means that it is WS-security compliant. WS-security is the oasis specification that specifies how security tokens are inserted as a part of the SOAP message. In other words, WS-BASIC means that the username and password can be found in the SOAP message, as per the username token profile of the WS-security specification. Once the credentials are extracted, the next step is to validate them against the file. The default implementation of the Oracle WSM File Authenticate requires the username and password to be in a comma separated format and the password should be the hash value using a MMD5 or SHA1 algorithm. In order to authenticate the credentials against the data store, the next step is to configure the File Authenticate step in Oracle WSMM. In this step, the options are straightforward. We have to configure the location of the password file and the hash algorithm format as either md5 or SHA1 (see the next screenshot). The sample file with username and password is: bob:{MD5}jK2x5HPF1b3NIjcmjdlDNA== You can use the wsmadmin tool provided as part of Oracle WSMM standalone or SOA suite). Type: wsmadmin md5encode bob password c;.htpasswd     Now that the authentication steps are configured, the next step is to configure the authorization policy step to ensure that only valid users can access the web service. For the file authorization method, it is no different than the file authenticate method i.e. even the user-to-role mappings are kept in the file. The following figure shows the File Authorize policy step. In this step, we have to define the location of the XML file that contains the users to roles mapping, and also the list of roles that should be allowed to access the service. The roles XML file should look like: <?xml version=‘1.0' encoding=‘utf-8'?> <UserRoles> <user username="joe" roles="guest"/> <user username="Bob" roles="Admin,guest"/> </UserRoles> In the previous XML file, the list of roles the user belongs to are defined as a value of roles element and is comma separated. Now that we have completed the steps to extract credentials, authenticate the request and also authorize the request, the next step is to save the policy steps and commit the policy changes. Once the policy is committed, any request to that web service would require a username and password, and that user should have necessary privileges to access the service. Oracle WSM: Active Directory Authenticate and Authorize In the previous section, we discussed authenticating and authorizing web service requests against a file. Though it's an easy start, security based on a file system can be easily compromised and will be tough to maintain. Authentication and authorization of web services are better handled when integrated with a native LDAP directory, such as active directory, so that the AD administrator can manage users and group membership. In this section, we will discuss how to authenticate and authorize web service requests against an active directory. Implementing a Calendar Control in the Yahoo User Interface (YUI)

The Basic Calendar Class The most basic type of calendar is the single-panel Calendar which is created with the YAHOO.widget.Calendar class. To display a calendar, an HTML element is required to act as a container for the calendar. The screenshot shows a basic Calendar control: The constructor can then be called specifying, at the very least the id of the container element as an argument. You can also specify the id of the Calendar object as an argument, as well as an optional third argument that can accept a literal object containing various configuration properties. The configuration object is defined within curly braces within the class constructor. It contains a range of configuration properties and keys that can be used to control different Calendar attributes such as its title, a comma-delimited range of pre-selected dates, or a close button shown on the calendar. There are a large number of methods defined in the basic Calendar class; some of these are private methods that are used internally by the Calendar object to do certain things and which you normally wouldn't need to use yourself. Some of the more useful public methods include: Initialization methods including init, initEvents, and initStyles which initialize either the calendar itself or the built-in custom events and style constants of the calendar. A method for determining whether a date is outside of the current month: isDateOOM. Navigation methods such as nextMonth, nextYear, previousMonth, and previousYear that can be used to programmatically change the month or year displayed in the current panel. Operational methods such as addMonths, addYears, subtractMonths, and subtractYears which are used to change the month and year shown in the current panel by the specified number of months or years. The render method is used to draw the calendar on the page and is called in for every implementation of a calendar, after it has been configured. Without this method, no Calendar appears on the page. Two reset methods: reset which resets the Calendar to the month and year originally selected, and resetRenderers which resets the render stack of the calendar. Selection methods that select or deselect dates such as deselect, deselectAll, desellectCell, select, and selectCell. As you can see, there are many methods that you can call to take advantage of the advanced features of the calendar control. The CalendarGroup Class In addition to the basic calendar, you can also create a grouped calendar that displays two or more month panels at once using the YAHOO.widget.CalendarGroup class. The control automatically adjusts the Calendar's UI so that the navigation arrows are only displayed on the first and last calendar panels, and so that each panel has its own heading indicating which month it refers to. The CalendarGroup class contains additional built-in functionality for updating the calendar panels on display, automatically. If you have a two-panel calendar displaying, for example, January and February, clicking the right navigation arrow will move February to the left of the panel so that March will display as the right-hand panel. All of this is automatic and nothing needs to be configured by you. There are fewer methods in this class; some of those found in the basic Calendar class can also be found here, such as the navigation methods, selection methods, and some of the render methods. Native methods found only in the CalendarGroup class include: The subscribing methods sub and unsub, which subscribe or unsubscribe to custom events of each child calendar. Child functions such as the callChildFunction and setChildFunction methods which set and call functions within all child calendars in the calendar group. Implementing a Calendar To complete this example, the only tool other than the Yahoo User Interface (YUI) that you'll need is a basic text editor. Native support for the YUI is provided by some web authoring software packages, most notably Aptana, an open-source application that has been dubbed 'Dreamweaver Killer'. However, I always find that writing code manually while learning something is much more beneficial. It is very quick and easy to add the calendar, as the basic default implementations require very little configuration. It can be especially useful in forms where the visitor must enter a date. Checking that a date has been entered correctly and in the correct format takes valuable processing time, but using the YUI calendar means that dates are always exactly as you expect them to be. So far we've spent most of this article looking at a lot of the theoretical issues surrounding the library; I don't know about you, but I think it's definitely time to get on with some actual coding! The Initial HTML Page Our first example page contains a simple text field and an image, which once clicked will display the Calendar control on the page, thereby allowing for a date to be selected and added to the input. For validity, we can also add the lang attribute to the opening <html> tag and for good measure, enforce the utf-8 character set. Nothing so far is YUI-specific, but coding in this way every time is a good habit. We link to the stylesheet used to control the appearance of the calendar control, which is handled in this example by the sam skin within the <link> tag. Accordingly, we also need to add the appropriate class name to the <body> tag. Following this, we link to the required library files with <script> tags; the calendar control is relatively simple and requires just the YAHOO, Document Object Model (DOM), and Event components (using the aggregated yahoo-dom-event.js file for efficiency), as well as the underlying source file calendar-min.js. A brief <style> tag finishes the <head> section of the page with some CSS relevant to this particular example, and the <body> of the page at this stage contains just two <div> elements: the first holds a <label>, text field, and a calendar icon (which can be used to launch the control), while the second holds the calendar control. When viewed in a browser, the page at this point should appear like this: The calendar icon used in this example was taken, with gratitude from Mark Carson at http://markcarson.com. Beginning the Scripting We want the calendar to appear when the icon next to the text field is clicked, rather than it being displayed on the page-load, so the first thing we need to do is to set a listener for the click event on the image. We first use the .namespace() method of the YAHOO utility to set up the namespace object used for this example. Next we define the anonymous launchCal function, which will hold all of the code that generates the calendar control. Then we use the .onDOMReady() method of the Event utility to execute the launchCal function when the DOM is in an usable state. We'll be looking at the DOM utility in much greater detail later in the book. Now we can add the extremely brief code that's required to actually produce the Calendar. Once we have a Calendar object, we can call the .render() method on it to create the calendar and display it on the page. No arguments are required for this method. Since we want the calendar to be displayed when its icon is clicked, we hide the calendar from view straight away. To display the calendar when the icon for it is clicked, we'll need one more anonymous function. If you view it in your browser now and click the Calendar icon, you should see this: The calendar is automatically configured to display the current date, although this is something that can be changed using the configuration object mentioned earlier. If you use a DOM explorer to view the current DOM of a page with an open calendar on it, you'll see that a basic Calendar control is rendered as a table with eight rows and seven columns. The first row contains the images used to navigate between previous or forthcoming months and the title of the current month and year. The next row holds the two-letter representations of each of the different days of the week, and the rest of the rows hold the squares representing the individual days of the current month. The screenshot on the next page show some of the DOM representation of the Calendar control used in our example page: Now that we can call up the Calendar control by clicking on our Calendar icon, we need to customize it slightly. Unless the person completing the form is very young, they will need to navigate through a large number of calendar pages in order to find their date of birth. This is where the Calendar Navigator interface comes into play. We can easily enable this feature using a configuration object passed into the Calendar constructor. Formation of XML Let us look at the structure of a common XML document in case you are totally new to XML. If you are already familiar with XML, which we greatly recommend for this article, then it is not a section for you. Let's look at the following example, which represents a set of emails: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?><emails> <email> <from>nowhere@notadomain.tld</from> <to>unknown@unknown.tld</to> <subject>there is no subject</subject> <body>is it a body? oh ya</body> </email></emails> So you see that XML documents do have a small declaration at the top which details the character set of the document. This is useful if you are storing Unicode texts. In XML, you must close the tags as you start it. (XML is more strict than HTML, you must follow the conventions.) Let's look at another example where there are some special symbols in the data: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?><emails> <email> <from>nowhere@notadomain.tld</from> <to>unknown@unknown.tld</to> <subject>there is no subject</subject> <body><![CDATA[is it a body? oh ya, with some texts & symbols]]></body> </email></emails> This means you have to enclose all the strings containing special characters with CDATA. Again, each entity may have some attributes with it. For example consider the following XML where we describe the properties of a student: <student age= "17" class= "11" title= "Mr.">Ozniak</student> In the above example, there are three attributes to this student tag—age, class, and title. Using PHP we can easily manipulate them too. In the coming sections we will learn how to parse XML documents, or how to create XML documents on the fly. Introduction to SimpleXML In PHP4 there were two ways to parse XML documents, and these are also available in PHP5. One is parsing documents via SAX (which is a standard) and another one is DOM. But it takes quite a long time to parse XML documents using SAX and it also needs quite a long time for you to write the code. In PHP5 a new API has been introduced to easily parse XML documents. This was named SimpleXML API. Using SimpleXML API you can turn your XML documents into an array. Each node will be converted to an accessible form for easy parsing. Parsing Documents In this section we will learn how to parse basic XML documents using SimpleXML. You can access each of them like an object. For example, $sxml->email[0] returns the first email object. To access the from element under this email, you can use the following code like: echo $sxml->email[0]->from So, each object, unless available more than once, can be accessed just by its name. Otherwise you have to access them like a collection. For example, if you have multiple elements, you can access each of them using a foreach loop: foreach ($sxml->email as $email)echo $email->from; Accessing Attributes As we saw in the previous example, XML nodes may have attributes. Remember the example document with class, age, and title? Now you can easily access these attributes using SimpleXML API. So if you look carefully, you will understand that each node is accessible like properties of an object, and all attributes are accessed like keys of an array. SimpleXML makes XML parsing really fun. Parsing Flickr Feeds using SimpleXML How about adding some milk and sugar to your coffee? So far we have learned what SimpleXML API is and how to make use of it. It would be much better if we could see a practical example. In this example we will parse the Flickr feeds and display the pictures. Sounds cool? Let's do it. If you are interested what the Flickr public photo feed looks like, here is the content. Many of you as (Java) programmers generate business purpose code, like "confirming an order" or "find available products". At times, you may also want to connect to external systems and services, since your application in isolation alone will not provide you the required functionality. When the number of such connections increases, you would be generating more and more of "integration code", mixed along with your business code. For single or simple systems and services this is fine, but what if your "Enterprise" has got many (say 100? or even more...) such systems and services to be integrated together? Here, integration becomes a prime concern, which is separate from fulfilling your business concerns. In the SOA context, we will have services fulfilling your business use cases. Existing Java tools help us to define services. But are they enough to support Service Oriented Integration (SOI)? Perhaps not, and this is where JSR-208 (Java Specification Request) introduces the Java Business Integration (JBI) specification. And in the world of integration, we have multiple Architectures to follow including the Point-to-Point, Hub-and-Spoke, Message-Bus and the Service-Bus. Various links that enable table operations have been put together on one sub-page of the Table view: Operations. Here is an overview of this sub-page: Table Maintenance During the lifetime of a table, it repeatedly gets modified, and so grows and shrinks. Outages may occur on the server, leaving some tables in a damaged state. Using the Operations sub-page, we can perform various operations, but not every operation is available for every table type: Check table: Scans all rows to verify that deleted links are correct. Also, a checksum is calculated to verify the integrity of the keys; we should get an 'OK' message if everything is all right. Analyze table: Analyzes and stores the key distribution; this will be used on subsequent JOIN operations to determine the order in which the tables should be joined. Repair table: Repairs any corrupted data for tables in the MyISAM and ARCHIVE engines. Note that the table might be so corrupted that we cannot even go into Table view for it! In such a case, refer to the Multi-Table Operations section for the procedure to repair it. Optimize table: This is useful when the table contains overheads. After massive deletions of rows or length changes for VARCHAR fields, lost bytes remain in the table. PhpMyAdmin warns us in various places (for example, in the Structure view) if it feels the table should be optimized. This operation is a kind of defragmentation for the table. In MySQL 4.x, this operation works only on tables in the MyISAM, Berkeley (BDB), and InnoDB engines. In MySQL 5.x, it works only on tables in the MyISAM, InnoDB, andARCHIVE engines. Flush table: This must be done when there have been lots of connection errors and the MySQL server blocks further connections. Flushing will clear some internal caches and allow normal operations to resume. Defragment table: Random insertions or deletions in an InnoDB table fragment its index. The table should be periodically defragmented for faster data retrieval. The operations are based on the underlying MySQL queries available—phpMyAdmin is only calling those queries. Changing Table Attributes Table attributes are the various properties of a table. This section discusses the settings for some of them. Table Type The first attribute we can change is called Table storage engine: This controls the whole behavior of the table: its location (on-disk or in-memory), the index structure, and whether it supports transactions and foreign keys. The drop-down list may vary depending on the table types supported by our MySQL server. Changing the table type may be a long operation if the number of rows is large. Table Comments This allows us to enter comments for the table. These comments will be shown at appropriate places (for example, in the left panel, next to the table name in the Table view and in the export file). Here is what the left panel looks like when the $cfg['ShowTooltip'] parameter is set to its default value of TRUE: The default value of $cfg['ShowTooltipAliasDB'] and $cfg['ShowTooltipAliasTB'] (FALSE) produces the behavior we have seen earlier: the true database and table names are displayed in the left panel and in the Database view for the Structure sub-page. Comments appear when the mouse pointer is moved over a table name. If one of these parameters is set toTRUE, the corresponding item (database names for DB and table names for TB) will be shown as the tooltip instead of the names. This time, the mouse-over shows the true name for the item. This is convenient when the real table names are not meaningful. There is another possibility for $cfg['ShowTooltipAliasTB']: the 'nested' value. Here is what happens if we use this feature: The true table name is displayed in the left panel. The table comment (for example project__) is interpreted as the project name and is displayed as such. Table Order When we Browse a table or execute a statement such as SELECT * from book, without specifying a sort order, MySQL uses the order in which the rows are physically stored. This table order can be changed with the Alter table order by dialog. We can choose any field, and the table will be reordered once on this field. We choose author_id in the example, and after we click Go, the table gets sorted on this field. Reordering is convenient if we know that we will be retrieving rows in this order most of the time. Moreover, if later we use an ORDER BY clause and the table is already physically sorted on this field, the performance should be higher. This default ordering will last as long as there are no changes in the table (no insertions, deletions, or updates). This is why phpMyAdmin shows the (singly) warning. After the sort has been done on author_id, books for author 1 will be displayed first, followed by the books for author 2, and so on. (We are talking about a default browsing of the table without explicit sorting.) We can also specify the sort order: Ascending or Descending. If we insert another row, describing a new book from author 1, and then click Browse, the book will not be displayed along with the other books for this author because the sort was done before the insertion. Table Options Other attributes that influence the table's behavior may be specified using the Table options dialog: The options are: pack_keys:Setting this attribute results in a smaller index; this can be read faster but takes more time to update. Available for the MyISAM storage engine. checksum: This makes MySQL compute a checksum for each row. This results in slower updates, but easier finding of corrupted tables. Available for MyISAM only. delay_key_write: This instructs MySQL not to write the index updates immediately but to queue them for later, which improves performance. Available for MyISAM only. auto-increment: This changes the auto-increment value. It is shown only if the table's primary key has the auto-increment attribute. Renaming, Moving, and Copying Tables The Rename operation is the easiest to understand: the table simply changes its name and stays in the same database. The Move operation (shown in the following screen) can manipulate a table in two ways: change its name and also the database in which it is stored Moving a table is not directly supported by MySQL, so phpMyAdmin has to create the table in the target database, copy the data, and then finally drop the source table. The Copy operation leaves the original table intact and copies its structure or data (or both) to another table, possibly in another database. Here, the book-copy table will be an exact copy of the book source table. After the copy, we will stay in the Table view for the book table unless we selected Switch to copied table. The Structure only copy is done to create a test table with the same structure. Appending Data to a Table The Copy dialog may also be used to append (add) data from one table to another. Both tables must have the same structure. This operation is achieved by entering the table to which we want to copy the data of the current table and choosing Data only. For example, we would want to append data when book data comes from various sources (various publishers), is stored in more than one table, and we want to aggregate all the data to one place. For MyISAM, a similar result can be obtained by using the MERGE storage engine (which is a collection of identical MyISAM tables), but if the table is InnoDB, we need to rely on phpMyAdmin's Copy feature. Multi-Table Operations In the Database view, there is a checkbox next to each table name and a drop-down menu under the table list. This enables us to quickly choose some tables and perform an operation on all those tables at once. Here we select the book-copy and the book tables, and choose the Check operation for these tables. We could also quickly select or deselect all the checkboxes with Check All/Uncheck All. Repairing an "in use" Table The multi-table mode is the only method (unless we know the exact SQL query to type) for repairing a corrupted table. Such tables may be shown with the in use flag in the database list. Users seeking help in the support forums for phpMyAdmin often receive this tip from experienced phpMyAdmin users. Database Operations The Operations tab in the Database view gives access to a panel that enables us to perform operations on a database taken as a whole. Renaming a Database Starting with phpMyAdmin 2.6.0, a Rename database dialog is available. Although this operation is not directly supported by MySQL, phpMyAdmin does it indirectly by creating a new database, renaming each table (thus sending it to the new database), and dropping the original database. Copying a Database Since phpMyAdmin 2.6.1, it is possible to do a complete copy of a database, even if MySQL itself does not support this operation natively.
