Hands-on JavaScript for Python Developers provides exactly what the title implies; if you’re into Python and need or want to start using JavaScript, this is your book. However, there’s lot more between the covers. The author has a sense of humor (Shakespearean insults?) and keeps a light, conversational style running while delivering a broad introduction to not only JS but django, react, flask, and other packages. He also provides references to useful external resources like electronjs ensuring coverage of all of the bases needed to get up and running.Examples of DOM and event-driven API calls are included as well, so after completing the book, a Python developer should be able to successfully design a functional website using JS.To the author’s credit, he does not attempt to favor one technology over the other; while this is obviously a JS-centric work, care was definitely taken to include and acknowledge the Python side of things. All in all, this is a worthwhile read and a solid reference for the bookshelf if you fall into the title category.

First and foremost, this is an easy to read book. The commentary by the author, not only about the examples laid out in the book, but just general commentary to connect the flow of the book is great. It is especially nice for those that normally don't enjoy "technical" instruction books (think dry text book from college). The author does a great job of not getting lost in technical terms, to make the text a dry read, but maintains credibility with their knowledge by how they frame the subject matter. It is a very conversational read, as if your simply conversing with the author about the subject matter. This is definitely a good book to learn JavaScript from. I think anyone with a programming background would benefit from this book, if they are wanting to gain functional knowledge of JavaScript. I would recommend this to anyone with coding knowledge as its not as specific to Python as the title may suggest. There are some areas that do a direct comparison, but overall I wouldn't let that deter you from buying this book to expand your JS knowledge.Lastly, there is quite a few historical background information pieces throughout the book that I really enjoyed from a general knowledge stand point. The background information was really helpful in allowing me to better understand the theory behind the usages in JavaScript compared to my existing knowledge from other languages.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to learn JavaScript. This book will especially help to create a solid foundation in understanding of JavaScript and how it functions within the world of programming languages. I also wouldn't limit this book to those who know Python. Python isn't my "main" language, I spend most of my programming time in C and C++, using Python more more hobby projects because of available libraries. Not being a Python expert had little to no impact on my enjoyment and learning from this book. I have recommended this to a couple of co-workers who have wanted to get a better JS understanding.

The book is not badly written, but the wording is a little confusing in some places. That’s not a deal breaker. But the book says it lets you leverage your python knowledge for faster learning, but very rarely does the author make comparisons to python. One example: in chapter 5, he talks about scoping and closures. Instead of comparing to python’s rules for the same, he explains those concepts from scratch. I bought this book intending to quickly get up to speed with JavaScript hacking known python for a while. If that’s you too, then this isn’t the book for you. I’ll update here if I find something better.

I am not new to programming but this book was not easy to follow. It lacks detailed explanation.
