Web Developer's Reference Guide

Chapter 2. HTML Attributes

HTML is built using elements. Each of these elements will have attributes. The attributes can change how the browser renders the element, configures it, and the behavior involving the element.

The focus of the chapter will be entirely on attributes. If you are unsure about which attributes apply to which elements, the previous chapter goes over almost all the elements and the attributes that apply to them.

Global attributes

These are attributes that are available for every HTML element. However, you should note that just because the attribute is available, it does not mean that it will actually do anything.

accesskey

The accesskey attribute creates a keyboard shortcut to activate or focus on the element:

<element accesskey></element>

Description

The accesskey attribute allows you to create a keyboard shortcut. This can be a space-delimited list of characters. Most browsers on Windows will use Alt + accesskey and most browsers on Mac use Ctrl + Option + accesskey.

Here is an example using a textbox that can be focused on with the character q:

<input type="search" name="q" accesskey="q"/>

class

The class attribute is often used to help group similar elements for CSS selectors:

<element class></element>

Description

The class attribute is one of the most used attributes. The class attribute allows CSS to target multiple elements and apply a style...

Miscellaneous

The miscellaneous grouping of attributes will have no hierarchy as they can be used on many different elements.

accept

The accept attribute gives the list of types for the server:

<element accept></element>

Elements

The elements used in the accept attribute are form and input.

Description

The accept attribute allows you to suggest the file type that this form or input should accept. You can use audio/*, video/*, image/*, a MIME type, or the extension.

Here is an example looking for PNG files:

<input type="file" accept=".png, image/png"/>

accept-charset

The accept-charset attribute gives the list of support charsets:

<element accept-charset></element>

Elements

The form element is used in the accept-charset attribute.

Description

The accept-charset attribute sets the charset that the form will accept. UTF-8 is most commonly used as it accepts many characters from many languages.

Here is an example of using the charset attribute:

<form accept...

  • Walk through three of the best and most popular web development frameworks – jQuery, Bootstrap, and AngularJS
  • References for any function you will need in your day-to-day web development

Description

This comprehensive reference guide takes you through each topic in web development and highlights the most popular and important elements of each area. You will discover more about three of the most popular frameworks today—Bootstrap, which builds on CSS, jQuery which builds on JavaScript, and AngularJS, which also builds on JavaScript. Finally, you will take a walk-through Node.js, which is a server-side framework that allows you to write programs in JavaScript.

I have been writing software since the time when ALL phones had wires. And I have been working with HTML since the birth of the Internet. This is the most thorough and complete reference I have ever seen. I learn something new simply browsing the pages! You cannot work as a developer on the web without touching Javascript. The introduction to Javascript in this book is equally valuable for an “old-salt” like me who has bad habits from days-gone-by or someone approaching it anew. Some of those quirky things about Node and the less-oft-used jewels in Bootstrap are collected here in a single reference.I highly recommend purchasing this in electronic format; “search" is an essential tool when you need to find something. The section on Angular is right up-to-date with recent changes, making it highly valuable as a resource.I am already a big fan of Packt Publishing. This is another great guide from Packt.

This book has a very good index and table of contents. It is also written like a cross between a classroom text and reference book. Most sections begin with some discussion of the language and enough background to clear up some basic terms and orient you to what the scope of the section / chapter is.I think they do a good job providing short examples that are easy to read and provide enough depth so you can actually see how a particular function works. They also provide narrative for things that are not obvious including the examples. The book is completely absent of war stories or anything rehashing the history of computing since ENIAC, thank goodness! Historical passages are short and relevant to understanding the content in my opinion. The books use of English is a little odd for me as an American but it's not a problem. If you've worked with diverse international teams, you'll be fine. If you haven't some things might take a 2nd or 3rd read. I don't think this is really any better or worse than other programming books. Developers tend to use English in strange ways anyway ...Last and not at all least, I have not stumbled into any technical errors, inaccuracies, or stylistic conventions I would consider unacceptable. What I would like to see are references or discussions about uniform conventions that almost seem like they are part of the language. For instance the use of "e" to pass and event object into a Javascript function. For beginners or folks like myself trying to transition into a different technology these 'little' things can take hours to sort out.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
