Spring MVC Blueprints

Chapter 2.  Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS)

One of the most essential enterprise content management systems nowadays is the electronic content management (ECM) system. Companies resort to this kind of web ecosystem to provide solutions for managing their legal documents, hospital records, e-mails, billing invoices and other collaboration-related files. These software solutions store all those unstructured data, to promote paperless transactions that help companies minimize their costs when managing huge cabinets of documents.

The ECM solution is the integration of different sub-components including record management, document management, workflow and process management, collaboration solution, and security modules. Some of the popularly known ECM platforms that are used by many companies worldwide are: EMC Documentum, Alfresco, Apache Lenya, Liferay and OpenCMS.

The chapter will particularly focus on the implementation of uploading and downloading files that is considered...

Overview of the project

The software specimen focuses only on the uploading and downloading solutions. It gives a simple conceptual framework on how to use the Spring MVC framework in creating a document library. No database management system will be used, except if the metadata are required to be backed up for future retrieval. All documents will be saved directly into the file system.

The simple prototype has the following pages:

  • The Home Page: This is the façade of the software, containing the logo, main content and ads of the site. All general links and functionalities are found on this page. This page also contains the login functionality of the application:
    Overview of the project
  • The Upload Page: This is where the user will upload the document(s). The page asks for a file and needs to be redirected to the location of the file. It will also ask for some information related to the document, such as rendition types, the name of the uploader, and date of upload. Clicking the upload button will trigger...

Technical requirement

This project will use the same installers and tools listed in Chapter 1Creating a Personal Web Portal (PWP), but there are some additional components and libraries that are required to be part of the STS project.

The Maven dependencies that need to be added are the following:

  • commons-fileupload: This dependency consists of classes and interfaces needed to create an easy, robust, and high-performance, file upload capability in servlet-based web applications; this library parses HTTP submitted using the POST method, and with a content type of "multipart/form-data", and exposes the polished request to the caller.
  • commons-io: This dependency consists of classes and interfaces that support file reading, writing and other management transactions.
  • commons-net: This dependency consists of a set of classes and interfaces that provide a fundamental protocol access to establish handshake transactions like FTP/FTPS access.

The library's commons-fileupload and...

The project development

All the nuts and bolts involved in developing this portal will show how to implement basic Spring MVC software.

  • Configuration of the DispatcherServlet
  • Configuration of the Spring container
  • Creating controllers
  • Validation
  • Views and ViewResolvers
  • Encryption and decryption of files
  • Creating error views for generic exceptions

Configuring the DispatcherServlet

There are two ways to perform file-uploading transactions, and the easiest and most immediate way is to use the Servlet 3.1 multipart request process. In order to configure this option, we add the tag <multipart-config> inside the <servlet> tag declaration of DispatcherServlet. The next step, which involves configuring the Spring MVC container, will discuss multipart request processes.

Aside from the <multipart-config> tag, there are no additional settings that have been added to the web.xml. The deployment descriptor (web.xml) still contains the <servlet> tag for the front controller...

Challenge yourself

Create an E-book web store that has the following features:

  • Library page: This shows all the list of e-books in PDF format ready to be downloaded by any readers online.
  • Admin page: A secured page that is used by any custodian or manager in uploading e-books for the viewers to download. This page uploads PDF files only.

Description

Spring MVC is the ideal tool to build modern web applications on the server side. With the arrival of Spring Boot, developers can really focus on the code and deliver great value, leveraging the rich Spring ecosystem with minimal configuration. Spring makes it simple to create RESTful applications, interact with social services, communicate with modern databases, secure your system, and make your code modular and easy to test. It is also easy to deploy the result on different cloud providers. This book starts all the necessary topics in starting a Spring MVC-based application. Moving ahead it explains how to design model objects to handle file objects. save files into a data store and how Spring MVC behaves when an application deals with uploading and downloading files. Further it highlights form transactions and the user of Validation Framework as the tool in validating data input. It shows how to create a customer feedback system which does not require a username or password to log in. It will show you the soft side of Spring MVC where layout and presentation are given importance. Later it will discuss how to use Spring Web Flow on top of Spring MVC to create better web applications. Moving ahead, it will teach you how create an Invoice Module that receives and transport data using Web Services By the end of the book you will be able to create efficient and flexible real-time web applications using all the frameworks in Spring MVC.

Who is this book for?

This book is for competent Spring developers who wish to understand how to develop complex yet flexible applications with Spring MVC. You must have a good knowledge of JAVA programming and be familiar with the basics of Spring.

What you will learn

  • *Set up and configure the Spring 4.x MVC platform from ground level up using the basic Spring Framework 4.x APIs
  • *Study requirements and manage solutions on file uploading transactions in Spring 4.x applications *Configure, , and test Spring integration to the Hibernate, MyBatis, and JPA frameworks for database transactions
  • *Properly implement exception handlers and audit trails in Spring MVC applications
  • *Generate reports using JFreeChart, Google Charts, JasperReports, DynamicReports, FreeMarker, Velocity, and Spring's API known as ContentNegotiatingViewResolver
  • *Configure security and flexibility by adding Captcha, Spring Security, Spring Flow, Spring Portlets, JTA to improve data management performance
  • *Implement web services using Spring's RESTful implementation and other service-oriented integration plugins
  • *Design and implement a Spring 4.x application using AngularJS, ExtJs, Twitter Bootstrap, and Spring Mobile for responsive web design

I had the pleasure to participate to the book review. The quality of the draft edition was simply amazing.Spring MVC framework is a Swiss army knife and this book provides pertinent use cases with implementation details.Even if you are an experimented Java/JEE developer, this book will surprise you by some features you don't yet tried or implemented with Spring MVC.I'm sure you won't regret buying it.

Using blueprints has several benefits. One is the simple fact you save time in developing software, especially when there is a close resemblance to one of the example blueprints. Another is the standardization that comes from using the blueprints. That standardization leads to reduced costs and time to maintain the solutions based on the blueprints.

For me, this book has a same problem like "Spring MVC Cookbook" - too many topics, cases and technologies (which not so related to Spring).Or better to say, that all of cases were described not so precisely or in detail.I think, the book should be bigger, or concentrate on main subject only - in this case it's possible to learn something. Besides it's a wasting of time.
